The mature workforce is expected to make up a quarter of employed U.S. adults by 2026*, yet 76% of older workers see age discrimination as a hurdle to finding a new job**.
When applying for jobs, you may unfortunately experience prejudice and discrimination if you are older than other candidates. This may be unconscious bias, like assumptions that you are overqualified or too expensive to hire, or it could be more blatant, like job postings that state a role is best for new graduates.
In this virtual workshop, you’ll learn steps you can take to help overcome ageism you may face when looking for work.
    Key Takeaways:
    - Signs of potential ageism in the hiring process
    - Resume tips for mature candidates
    - How to avoid potential age bias in your interview

Easy to spot ageism in job ads. Phrases like "Energetic", "High Energy", "Entry Level", " Recent College Graduate" , " Super Fun Work Environment", "Digital Native"...etc. Agesim is everywhere in the job market.

Some great points there. Only things I would add from experience are....many managers what to be the one that finds the young dead ringer, that moves up in the company and wants credit for that. This is not found in an older employee. Also, many managers do not want to hire someone that has a lot more knowledge than them, due to fear of inferiority or their job security.

Age discrimination is ridiculous. I have filled out around 10 application for a job. I have over 41 years of management and retail experience. But these companies think I no longer can do the job. Hiring younger workers don't even have any experience in the retail business. For an sample. You're are supposed to rotate the stock. Move the old stock to the front. Everytime I go shopping. It doesn't matter it's Kroger, Walmart or any other supermarket. I see groceries stocker put the new stock in front of the old stock. Not even checking expiration date of the old stock.

The art of interviewing seems to be dying out.
Too many managers use pre-written interview questions *Give me an example of... and what you did about it*, instead of knowing what they actually want in an employee.
They just know they have a gap to fill and take the easy way out with these pre-written questions.
(I interviewed with 4 different companies in one week and got asked the EXACT same questions at each interview and each job was completely different from each other)
At the age of 55, I have been asked by managers *are we interviewing you or are you interviewing us?*.
Yes..... as it should be. ;-)

I'm sure that they don't even read resumes these days. In my last job of 15yrs, every they noticed that I was able to do a lot on computers they were shocked. I asked " did anyone read my resume when I was hired??" 2019, new management decided the older workers needed to go and I was laid off, sadly, and still out of work because nobody really wants to hire anyone aged 60. So the idea that I am more knowledgeable goes out the window during an interview with ridiculous questions.

@@sf3891 , I'm starting to see this, I'm 60. So far I've gotten 3 scam proposals to work at 3 places that I researched and don't exist. Agencies keep trying to send me to places that don't match my work experience by a long shot. It's like they are trying to just send me someplace to make it look like they are doing their job, they have my resume. I'm going back to AARP after all in the mid-Fall or mid-Winter, they were working with me and then they closed down during the lockdown. I'll try the non-profit arena and just do anything temp agencies till age 62 and retire, use the temp agencies till 65 get on medicare. I'm over the corp world and job places in general. As a mature older adult, physically fit and energetic, mechanical inclined, moderate tech skills. I've applied on different online websites for jobs that i considered to be a good fit. Just to be ghosted or sent an emailed, but no interview. Found out that companies are using A.I. app & resume screeners. The problem I see, a lot of applicants, that can be great candidates, such as my self are being rejected. Another issue come across classifieds, employers no putting their name, or phone number, just a genetic email. No way to research about the company, but they want you sent them your info. Last but not least watch out for job scammers thet seem legit. Asking fur a photo, cooy of your drivers license. Never give your social security by phone, zoom, or in person interview, until a job offer or officially hired. In 2022 beware of "scammers" , trying to steal your identity.

    • @skytechbits
      @skytechbits Месяц назад

Yes I wish people would never give out their driver's license or even phone number for that matter until they decide with proof that the company is legit and that they are really interested. You don't know based on a job description if you are really interested in working with them until you learn about their management culture, that is, if they are a legit company. There are now, after 2020, many more scammers everywhere on all platforms. Since Indeed advertises that the company can do a video interview from the Indeed platform then the job seeker should not have to give out their phone number or be directed to another website off of the Indeed platform for the first employer meeting.

In the application process for most, if not all, companies that are promoted by Indeed, they require (i.e. you can't submit without) a Start Date and End Date for all past positions held. Why not change this to Duration, e.g., Project Manager 3 years, Senior Engineer 5 years, etc.?

I'm in IT and good at what I do. I'm also 62 years old and haven't been hired after a year of searching. (Around 150+ applications to a large variety of organizations)
    Questions in my mind:
Why would I keep getting interviews if the companies are not really willing to hire my age?
Do they have to interview a certain number of older people to keep up their image?
Do they think I will take more time off to upkeep my health?
Does my insurance cost them more?
I thought it was improper or even illegal to ask age on an application, yet they all have a mandatory field for birthdate on their forms.
I also didn't inject the zombie juice into my body and many employers require that. It doesn't seem legal.
I'll admit that I do feel changes in my body and mind with increasing age, but not enough to stop me from being a great worker. I have respect and I value my next position. You can't teach those things to a younger worker.

This video really could use an update. The pandemic and the lockdown really changed the job market for the worse. Many employment agencies shut down or changed direction entirely during the past couple of years. Employers are now much more picky and willing to use things like AI filters and the like to discard 'reject' resumes. Hell, I couldn't even get hired by our local supermarkets. They're entirely staffed by high school kids now. This video also seemed to be focused strictly on white-collar work. People outside of that world, not just trades, but creative work, health care, food and hospitality industries, all face challenges in overcoming ageism in their job search that don't even seem to get touched upon here. Time for a retake.

The point right at 9:52 is a good way to tell if a company you want to work for is opting to play stupid. According to a podcast I heard many years ago that sometimes if the company wants to use these words in advertising for the job, you might want to ask them if they do have an upper age limit for hiring. That way, they would be forced to tell the truth. And when they pull that crap, they know they are breaking the law. Companies know fair and square that they are prohibited from imposing maximum age limits on job openings. If they do have one, then that maximum age limit needs to be tossed out with the trash. If own a company and if the attorney general catches you imposing upper age limits, you can be fined severely.

It seems like this video talked a lot about the problem and how to recognize it. You didn't mention how to succeed in getting a job if you've been running your own business for 25 years and Covid policy took that. Now at 59 all the job postings want me to get another degree for almost any job that pays a living wage for San Francisco. I don't see anything I qualify for despite looking young, knowing how to do all the things that it takes to run a business and getting some new certificates for skills I was interested in studying during the Covid lockdown. The advice here is frustrating and simplistic. I don't feel like I learned anything that will actually get me a job besides luck. How do you convince anyone to even look at you when you have been self employed?

An additional topic/parameter is "Wageism." Being a professional in the medical field, I have experienced direct rejection of applications for jobs which do not pay what the data shows my given job category pays. The bias becomes - "why look at this person applying when they can potentially go back into their trained and licensed field, and thereby create the "flight risk," one who leaves a lesser paying job for a higher paying job as soon as they can. Why should we take that chance?" My applications never make it past the ATS and to a human HR analyst/screener. I am handcuffed to my former training on paper and from many years experience, yet additional training and the lateral knowledge, skills, and abilities are not considered when measured against wages in what presents on paper. This is "Wageism." I guess opting (choosing) to apply for more desirable jobs which are known to pay less is not allowed in 2021!!!! Follow the money...

If applying to get your foot in the door, those qualifications will help once you are in and wish to advance to other positions that become open. Just a thought.

I think they want younger people that know less and they can teach and they will stay longer. I think older workers would be good temporary jobs, I wish temporary agencies hadn't stop existing - what is expected of people today concerning customer service is questionable and older workers get what is going on, younger people thing it is the norm. I will say, some older workers have negative attitudes and need to be sure they have a happy attitude. A positive about older workers, they know what they are good at, and they usually apply for what they know they can do, younger people don't know yet what they like and are good at.

A CV is very long as expected but your resume should be shorter and more concise. A talent recruiter told me that she doesn't have time to go through five page resume x 100 people, so they only look at the shorter more compact resumes that has everything they nee to see. For example, they may not care about hobbies and organizations you belong to unless you are a professional that needs to be part of one as part of your job description. If you are applying to be a historian and belonging to some historian society will help. They may not care if you are part of the Scout Master for boys and girls and are applying for job as historian.

You are part of the problem, Indeed. There are so many ways to get around age discrimination which I am sure you know. On my last interview, they asked me how many more years am I going to work?
