    Man, “I was only happy the moment I learned that it’s okay to cry” is some real deep shit. I got emotional listening to his voice break as he was talking about the Big Brother interview.

    • @manysnakes
      @manysnakes 6 лет назад +5

      Dude, all I could think listening to that, and it was a solid hour of him explaining how much it hurt it, is that he has some serious and deep emotional trauma from what happened. He was far too young and WAYYYYYYY to emotionally stunted to deal with it at the time. It cost him a lot of the success he probably deserved and turned him into a pariah for an entire community, at an age when most of us are getting awkward boners at the dinner table. I was very glad to hear him talking about knowing it's ok to cry, and I hope he also realizes that it's ok to get the mental health help that he needs.

  • @triplflip900
    @triplflip900 6 лет назад +78

    It's really sad all this stuff happened to him. It was all just because he was a young kid with difficulties with social and emotional development who got in way over his head. And it sounds like some of these people (esp. big brother, who, like he said, were also just young guys) were basically just exploiting him. I honestly can't believe the real adults in the industry let it go as far as it did. If I saw all that stuff happen today, I would assume he had some kind of mental disability that people were playing with maliciously. I can really see why sometimes companies keep young kids who are really good out of the spotlight until they get a bit older.
    But like most tragedies, there are positive things that have come out of it. His tumultuous ride has clearly caused him to learn a lot and mature immensely. It's incredible to hear a pro skater speak with the humility, self-compassion, and emotional intelligence that few very few people in general do. He seems like a genuinely positive person who loves life and, obviously, loves skateboarding - and what more can we, as skateboard fans, ask for in the personality of a pro skater?

    • @MycoMatty

    I really think the big brother thing is blown out of proportion. I'm not sticking up for what he said, it was definitely stupid. But if he was a real racist things would have went way differently. Stevie would not have been cool about it. But Stevie understood what it was. It was just an ignorant kid who had some growing to do. That's all it was. Corey actually is quite the human for not even holding a grudge towards big brother. A lot of you
    would be really mad if someone did that to you. He is 100 percent right, there is things we've all done that were ashamed of. Most of us are lucky though, and there not permanently printed. Or maybe were the unlucky ones because some of you never grow from the things you've done that bring shame.

      slosher I agree. Vert, Street, etc. I may have been one of those fellas skateboarding at Acalanes outside Water Polo & swim meets in the early 1990s. Nice to hear a fellow skateboarder copping to rocking the speedo suits. I bought a couple of boards & perhaps a bong pipe at Ooga Booga in Walnut Creek. Awesome episode. Corey is an inspiration. I used to skate in the mid 2000's, NEVER knew about the Big Brother interview or all the shit he went through. Maybe I did, vaguely, but never gave a shit about it, I still don't. Always liked Corey Duffel for his skateboarding! Dude is RAD!

    When I was a kid, I was picking out a new dvd at a skateshop, and I was looking at foundations cataclysmic abyss I asked the dude at the counter about it and he just kept telling me to buy fully flared. I purchased the foundation video and that video had way more impact to me with the skating, soundtrack, and lifestyle.

    Wade Speyer was the hammer god before hammers were even a thing. There was just a bunch of other skaters and kids that did bigger stuff. Then there was just Wade Speyer level that was just above and beyond the realm of all the rest of the skaters of the time. The hubba stuff, the hammer ollies, and then power vert rider. A mans mans of skating that kids aspired to be. Legend. Great interview. Duffel is rad.

    This was my favorite 9 Club yet! Corey seems like such a fun and loving guy, he really got a bad shake for a few years back in the day. His love for the the useless wooden toy is as pure as it comes and he's happy to share it.
    Oh, and you were slightly off with him being similar to Jim Carrey. He is the spitting image and persona of Steve Martin. Especially when he's in full smile.

    I don't hold Corey accountable for his 15 year old words. And I love how he confronted everything in this interview, like a man. I do however, hold him accountable for his ripping on a skateboard. Fast, skillful, not giving a fuck, 100% skateboarding. Another great one Nine Club. Thank you Nine Club, Duffel, and skateboarding!!
