- Johannes Just (GER) came around to test some gurdy cotton with me! Also we play his new tune at the end of the video!
My instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.

More of that song! Surprising how good that sounds, I've always considered the Gurdy to be more of a solo instrument but your Gurdies complement each other. Johannes seems cool, have him on again. :)
I absolutely love the sound of those instruments, very lovely.
Vicose is vegetable matter dissolved in nitric acid and alcohol then extruded. If you spin it and make fabric you have rayon. "Cotton Vicose" is the fiber from the plasticised wood pulp.
A natural plastic origination with what to do with mountains of sawdust from lumber processing.
Suggestion on the natural cotton; use a hair comb to remove bits of twig and cotton hull. For small quantities making "combed cotton" is easy.
Natural cotton will still have bits of the plant.
Combed cotton will have the bits combed out. But the cottonseed oil, with the characteristic scent, is still there.
Washed cotton has the oils removed. e.g. cotton balls from the makeup section of a store.
... from growing up with a grandfather who was foreman in a cotton gin and warehouse.

Hi Patty, do you have any tips for someone who is interested in learning how to play a Hurdy Gurdy?
One material that would've been good to include is silk ... I've been using silk on my chantrelles (and occasionally on the drones) for 15+ years, weavers silk, undyed ... very long strands, need to be pulled apart and "woven" a bit to apply .. but, it's very strong and lasts and lasts on the strings. It does take some getting used to get it to wind on the strings (because of the length of the fibers) but once you get it it's great... I haven't used cotton in years

She told us in another video that her current gurdy costs about 8000 euros, and that playing a gurdy wasn't difficult for her, but that might also be because she has 12+ years of piano and band experience, which gives her the ability to move her hands independently and giving her an extremely good musical feeling.

I thought that the hole surface of the wheel is made of the cotton. I'm surprised that you need to round the small piece of cotton on every string in order to play... How often do you need to do it?

I have a question. When you compared the first two kinds of cotton you said that one (Risco's?) was a natural fiber but was also chemically made. Those two terms can not go together. It is either Natural or Man-Made. Can you clarify this for me? I suspect it is just a grammar issue since Gerrman & English are almost opposite grammatically LOL

Just goes to show there is a different way to prepare your instrument depending upon your tastes. I wonder about other fibers, Like Silk? I saw that mentioned before in a comment too! What else have you tried?
