    After watching, one recommendation for anyone taking this on at home, make sure to take off your fill plug before draining. Ensures better flow of drain, and ensure that you can actually fill it back up

      1A Auto Parts after watching your video and changing my diff fluid and gasket I noticed two small areas not connected to the bolt holes were it appeared to be weeping fluid - best way to describe it. Is seepage through the diff cover something you have seen? I covered the two half inch lines with JB Weld which I think will fix that. However I also have some other webpage from back area - not coming from pinion or vent hole areas. Vent is also clear. Very small but wet nonetheless. Is there some other explanation or area I am missing? Hate doing job and having this very small leakage! 212k mile Suburban. Great video. Thanks

    @Sacha Parris You may want to check the transmission fluid level, and also the color of it to see if it's discolored and needs to be changed. If this is fine, also check the U Joints in the drive shaft to see if there's any play in them, which could also be creating this sound. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

    What can you do if there's no drain or fill plugs? There is what I assume to be a breather tube coming out of the top slightly behind the brake line holder, but that seems hardly like the place to fill it from, plus how would I check the level....Any Ideas? Maybe buying a new cover with a fill plug at least? Working on an 03 GMC Yukon XL.

    What's the longest someone's Gone without changing the differential fluid? I feel like this is one of the fluids on a vehicle that can last the longest. I wish GM would have made a drain plug for them to make it easier to change.

      I knew I went long enough on a previous vehicle that once it was flushed, I gained 1-1.5 MPG immediately. Did one again today and taking off the old gasket material took 75% of the time or more (like an hour). The rest was a cake walk by comparison.

      I have a 2001 Silverado stepside 5.3L and I just changed my front differential oil yesterday cause it started making a huge thumping noise so I knew I had chunks of metal going through the gears. so I changed it yesterday and it resolved the noises 100%. And I've never changed the rear diff oil but I do check it every 10 - 12 months and top it off if I need to because I know I have a leak on that casing.

    If you’re only trying to do a fluid change, make sure the fill plug is not frozen before draining the fluid. A lot of times that fill but is completely frozen. Once you drain it, you can’t fill it back up without doing this whole service.

    Are the drain and fill plugs the same size? It's weird that I can't find a fill plug to purchase in any store (mines stripped) but I see many drain plugs.

      I have an 01 Chevy Silverado step side 5.3L 4 wheel drive and no my fill and drain plugs are different sizes. Fill plug was a 15 mm and the drain plug is a 14 mm.

    Did he say 15 ft lbs or torque? I’ve watched a few videos and they all differ from 15 to 35 ft lbs of torque and now I’m confused

    Another great video from 1A Auto! Question: I have an 8.5, 10 bolt rear differential cover, and I wanted to know the exact size and dimensions for the 10 bolts on the rear differential, in order to replace old bolts with new ones? Thanks.

      @1AAuto  9 лет назад

      Thank you for watching. I do not know the exact size of the bolts. I would remove one and measure it up or take it with you to the hard ware store to match up.Please let us know how the repair comes out!

    This may sound like a stupid question, but my husband wanted to know what the purpose of the magnet is for?

    • @QLFProductions
      @QLFProductions 5 лет назад

      Due to normal wear and tear, differential oil may contain small metal particles. The magnet holds these particles to keep them from circulating through vital components.

      It is so that the metal shavings does not get into the differential components. Just like how some oil pans has drain plugs with Magnetic tips.

      The part store said that my '01 Chevy 5.3L would require 1.8L to fill. So of course I bought 2 bottles. But then I went back to the store and bought a 3rd so I could keep drain plug off and pour some fresh oil through it.

      Yes, that's the "official" answer but they need to know how many bottles to purchase to begin with.

    What is the name of the bar that goes from side to side in front the differential plate?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  7 лет назад

      +Jaime Rivera It sounds like you are referring to the sway bar. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

    • @Sweet68Camaro
      @Sweet68Camaro 6 лет назад +1

      Jaime Rivera That's the "sway bar" or anti-roll bar. They are used mostly on Tahoes and Suburbans because the are top heavy and the bar helps to limit the body roll on turns.

    Did this today on my 98 tahoe. The previous person that took off the diff cover did a shady job. No rtv at all. The gasket fell right off the differential and cover. Lol! Only reason i did this was because it was leaking... Do NOT use synthetic gear oil as this will eat away at the rtv!

    Whats a Rear Differential do ?to the car ?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  9 лет назад +5

      The rear differential has two jobs. First, it gets power from the driveshaft, and uses a system of gears to send power to the axles and on to the wheels. The gear system is set up so that the wheels can spin at slightly different speeds. Allowing that wheel speed difference is the differential's other job, and the reason it's called the differential. You want the wheels to be able to turn at different speeds, because in a turn, the inside wheel (for example, the left wheel in a left turn), doesn't cover as much distance as the outside wheel. Hope that helps. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

      I put it 1 full gallon in a 01 suburban RWD after having it drain all the way for three full days. I would venture to say if it was not completely drained it would have taken approx. 3 quarts.
