You hit it at the best conditions we’ve had in years. If you catch it when the Meadows, Oz Run and White Lightning are open, you’ve caught it at a good time.. Typically, we don’t have seasons like we just had. I think you provided a solid review. Sugar tends to be our favorite in NC but Beech has Sugar beat on ease of obtaining lift passes. Gunther needs to step up his game on using technology in the lift pass acquisition game! I like the Bavarian feel of the village where the brewery and shop are. It has a lot of potential to incorporate more events throughout the year where Sugar really lacks a venue to do anything more than what they do. Sugar has Beech beat on runs but Beech has character. Food? Eh! Go back up the mountain to Brick Oven Pizza or back into Banner Elk. Staff? Always been awesome and fun, if you’re not a jerk to them. Season Passes? Expensive for what Beech has to offer. Lodging? We’ve found some ok deals but we go with a group to make it an ok deal. Best Deal? Drive farther and go to Snowshoe in WV for better runs, better lodging, better food, better atmosphere, better season pass prices. Will I go back? Of course! It is still fun!
I'm looking at going snowboarding for the first time January 2024 for my bachelor trip. We are deciding between Beech, Sugar, and Snowshoe so you basically covered all the bases!
I go to beech about 15 to 25 days a year and I’d say that’s accurate. The views are incredible most days especially when you can see grandfather mountain. Last year was insane for snow. Haven’t seen it like that in years
I have skied Beech and Sugar a few times. They are definitely the best places to ski or snowboard in the south. Can’t really compare to the Rookies but for the southeast they are the best.
Local here and out of all the places within 2 hours of Beech I think Beech is my favorite place to ride super Good vibes always good views and usually have some of the better snow unless I see

Beech is a great hill to go to if you're looking for a fun hill, in a great area that is affordable. We spent a few days in Banner Elk in 2019 and hit all 3 hills - Sugar, Beech and App over the 4 days we were there. I won't go back to Sugar unless I have don't have other options - it was ridiculously crowded, the snow had bare spots which caused a tear in my wife's base and they only had a handful of runs open. We've been going to Snowshoe the last couple of years but due to kids sports and our work schedules we're going back to Beech this year. We're excited about it as we really enjoyed the hill, lodge and Banner Elk!
Go to Brian head resort in Utah it is the most amazing ski/snowboard experience I’ve ever had because it’s almost always a pow day and YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN RUNS IN THE WOODS! But we had to cut it short because my dad (while skiing in the woods) hit a tree and had a branch go through his cheek👍🏼
Worth mentioning that Beech has more ski-in-ski-out rental homes than any mountain in NC. But you’re right, Mr Buckhouse, that they don’t have any lodges. Thanks for reviewing our area!
Yo mane love the channel! I live in FL, I hit CO every year, and love it. BUT I get to NC alot, as it's a drive away instead of a flight. Beach and Sugar are the popular ones, and pretty fun. I think a little hidden gem you should hit on the next snow day is Cataloochee, NC. Upper and Lower Snowbird is dope! it's basically a little half pipe, trick, jump run, it's addicting! My fave run playful wise of all the places I've ever been!
There used to be a high speed lift, and before that, a gondola. The gondola was removed a long time ago, and there are some benefits to having the newer quad chairs. Good review 👍!
I grew up skiing in Tahoe, husband used to live in Breckenridge, now we live in Florida- which of the NC mountains is better suited to little kids (6 yrs old) that have never seen snow? I realize snow out west will not compare but looking for a cool experience this winter. Thanks for your video
For ski school instruction or overall experience in NC, I'd go with Sugar Mountain first. They have a "little bears" program where you start in the ski yard as a "White/Polar Bear", graduate after a day or two to the next group of "Brown Bears" on the greens, and after a day or two of that, graduate to "Grizzley Bear" on the blues. The program includes checklists of skills taught and demonstrated required at each level to progress to the next level, and they get a "report card" at the end of each day, so it's clear what they are learning and they are getting a complete instruction and not just being shown random stuff. The progressive instruction started my 5-year-old as a Whiter Bear and got her on the blues by age 6, with 5 or 6 instruction days over 2 seasons.
I went the other day and I liked the burger in the tap bar. 8/10 burger. The bun was a bit dry. Still recommend taking some stroope waffles or something.
Wow this is crazy! I’ve been going to beach mountain my entire life. My family and I will go up there in the winter for a week and have a blast skiing. The run I saw you do in the woods I’ve never seen before. I’ll have to try to find it! Edit: is the view always there? Yes you will pretty much always see the view even on the bad days.
That trail in the woods has been killing me. I have never seen that and have no idea where it is either. I've skied the trees a little but nothing like that. It's definitley a mountain bike trail but damn where tf is it.
Giving them a 2 for having some housing at least listed sounds totally fair. They could have done nothing at all and listed nothing. A 6 for a park with zero jumps you had to hike due to a doen tow does surprise me however. That would have gotten maybe a 2 or 3 from me. Scoring nitpicks aside I'm super grateful for you videos. I'm new to riding in this area and you're helping make my hill selection a breeze. Thank you so much. If I can support monetarily someday I will with some of your merch or your Venmo. Until then I'll like and subscribe and try to watch as many of your vids as I can.
Pls go to Mt ski gull in minnisota it's a small resort yes there's no lodging but for beginners it's really good and has a sick park oh and it has some good but short black diamonds

This video was recommended after I watched the Beech Mountain pipe burst incident. Kinda ironic lol. That was a pretty poor response to that incident, I hope everyone who was injured, as well as everyone who helped the people to safety are compensated
Kind of weird that you ended up with a higher score for Beech than Sugar. The runs on sugar are far more consistent and longer, greens are green, blues are blue… they’re not weird mixes where the blue gets slow but is too fast at start for a noob. Wondering if you have too many points for clouds and an individual experience with staff. Of course respect your right to your opinion but I’m curious for instance how much of that final score was affected by nice clouds and coincidentally helpful employees amenable to a video vs you know… lodging and actual runs? 😝
I go to Beech in the early season sometimes if they have more terrain open than other places....but otherwise, I'd have more fun at Sugar, Cataloochee, Gatlinburg, or Winterplace. Why? Variety of terrain and runs. Beech has parallel runs that seem to lack individual personalities, IMHO. Unless they have the Oz run open, Beech just doesn't have the variety of Sugar or Snowshoe. Still, I have nothing bad to say about Beech...I just find the runs to be uninteresting.
honestly the mountains are not bad in north carolina if it actually snows there. other than that it's pretty sucky to ride icy hills but i'm not the best rider either
