this whole video was him dodging kids/ new people randomly cutting lol
Pretty much my whole day 🤣
Thanks for watching!
Closest mountain to Charlotte, that's how it be. On the weekend you gotta be on it first thing - and you *might* get 2.5 hours before the crowds make it untenable. Unless it's raining lol.
And snowboarders laying in the middle of the run.
Really appreciate the level of effort put into these east coast videos. Not a lot of other creators doing this.
Thank you so much for your kind words! It's a labor of love for sure. Hoping to get a lot more done this season!
Those conditions are about as good as it gets on sugar, and relatively uncrowded too! Gunthers is so rippable, love that run.
Thank you for watching! Yes, the conditions were amazing that day. It had been a long time since I've had a ski day that good in the southeast!
What a joy to ski "virtually"... I learned to ski in 1962 (aged 2) and just came back from a day of skiing at Monarch Mountain, a locals' place in south-central Colorado. I had not skied in seven years and was a bit nervous... but I had a blast! God willing, I'll still be at it when I'm 80. Your video is expertly shot and produced. I can't wait to hit Sugar Mountain in early February! Cheers🎿
Your comment just made my day! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Enjoy skiing Sugar!
Rlly awesome and helpful video
Thank you for watching!
9:30 Gunther's Way might be the best run in the Southeast. Not crowded (most find the tip-in intimidating, I assume) and a ton of fun to rip down.
Absolutely! Loved skiing that run. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Every resort should post something like this. It didn't look very crowded (by Sugar standards) so you must've been up there on a weekday. I always liked Sugar Slalom, but the only way to reach it is via Tom Terrific (they used to have a T-bar). I've pestered Gunther, the owner, to cut in a cat track behind Tom to allow access to Slalom for people who don't have good enough health insurance to ski Tom Terrific, but no dice.
Thank you so much for watching! That's a really great point, there's really not a great way to access Sugar Slalom without risking a fall. Maybe one day!
is switchback not your requested cat track?
@@pithub6903 Nope, I was looking at the other side of the mountain, behind Tom Terrific. The trail map shows such a track, but it's not really there. I tried to attach a jpg for clarity, but got frustrated w/ YT and gave up. If you pull up the trail map and look above and to the left of Tom you'll see the area.
@@alonzobrickman7418 ah yes i see, you're right. thanks for clarifiying!
The greatest learning tutorial i ever had... thanks bro! Keep it up!
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching!
This is the exact kind of video I was looking for. It's very enjoyable and informative. Do you have one for Beech Mtn? We are going to Sugar and Beech in a few weeks, and I've wanted to show my kids what to expect in this kind of video.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. I unfortunately was not able to get to Beech last year as they had an issue getting all of their runs open. I do plan to go this year though!
The first run didn't even look that long on the map but after watching you ski down it its easily longer than anything I've been riding at App. Gonna go to sugar for my birthday
Sugar is like 3 times the size of app maybe more
Thanks for watching! That's partially why I created the channel; it can be really hard to get a feel for the mountain by just looking at the trail map. Happy early birthday!
@@theskiingcartographer thanks! And I appreciate the videos so much!
Great video this helped me a lot. You really deserve more subs.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! Hoping to get a lot more uploaded this season!
Your video is very complete, I already subscribed, we are from Mexico, we were in Dalton Georgia in November and December, we are going to return next week, and your video motivated us to go skiing!! thank you so much!!! We will be there on January 15, do you know if the snow continues???
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! It really means a lot to me. I'm not sure how much natural snowfall Sugar is going to get near the 15th, but temps have been very cold and they've been able to blow lots of snow. Hope it continues!
I wonder if you can actually go around Tom Terrific and straight to Sugar Slalom through that gap in the trees the map has. I wanna practice longer blies without being forced to try the blacks first lol
Your best bet is go with north ridge then cross over
fwiw only the first 100 feet or so of Tom Terrific is black level steep. it quickly widens out and turns into a blue. good run for developing better edge control as the consequences are minimal - brief slide on your ass haha. It's the next logical progression once you're comfortable with upper flying mile.
@@stevenmcnutt1960 thanks for the tip! I noticed after a couple days of boarding at Sugar I was able to do the black runs at Appalachian a lot more easily so practice on the longer runs definitely helped. If I can do thin slice I can probably try out the black diamond runs at sugar confidently
Next is Beech? 👀 or Hatley pointe?
What about both 👀
Weather pending, I'm planning to do them back to back days 1/27-1/28. Thanks for watching!
@ Yw and bet!
Just me or is Switchback almost always a straight sheet of ice?
It got a lot of powder last year and it was a completely different run, shit was gnarly
Yeah, Switchback can get pretty icy, especially in the mornings.
just me or does that double black look like a blue all day long anywhere out west
Thanks for watching! I don't think the video does the steepness justice. It's not a blue out west but definitely not a double black either. I address this at 16:27 mark of the video with a side by side comparison :)
All slope rankings are specific to that resort/mountain. So a black just means its the hardest at that particular resort not a nationwide ranking system.
From someone who's been out west, it's about as steep as a single black run at snowbird. Video flattens it out. But its also short
The website has it at a 48degree pitch over 100% grade. Would be the same steepness as double black. Perhaps less obstacles but still narrow and extremely steep
@ Seemed pretty steep last time I was there. Probably somewhere between 42-46 degree but maybe 48 at its max pitch.
