I’m beginning to get really tired of all the pundits and commentators joking or talking down about how we play. Sure it doesn’t always work but if everyone played the exact same way football would be so boring. Yesterday was incredibly unfortunate as Liverpool are the last team we needed to face at the current time. We need more players, we need players back from injury. We need to fully support our team and our manager.

The immediate context of the Liverpool game is that Liverpool rested 8 starters who played against a young, inexperienced, and fatigued defense playing their 3rd game in a week.
The medium term context is that Spurs have missed anywhere from 7-10 players over the past 2 months - absentees being doubly damning for Ange’s system that requires energy in every phase of a game.
The long term context is that Spurs have overhauled their squad and made it drastically younger and it will take more than a season for things to click considering, for example, that two of their key players are 18 year olds.
Ange is suffering a historic injury and absentee crisis that is hard to legislate for. He couldn’t predict that a player would get a 7 match ban for being racist or that his whole backline would be injured or that half of his front line would be unavailable for the first half of the season.
There is, however, more than enough evidence to demonstrate that his system is devastatingly effective when players are fit and available.
Moreover, taking the Spurs job at the time he did was damn near career suicide for Ange considering the absolute dumpster fire that the club was in post Conte.
He took our club at our worst and not once has he disparaged the club like Conte did every fortnite.
Ange is not blameless however. I am baffled by why he didn’t integrate Lo Celso into the squad and give him more minutes last season when Maddison was atrocious. I am confused as to why Skipp was never given a proper run in at the #6 position.
I am utterly confused as to why we signed Dragusin, a slow player who is poor on the ball, considering that we sold Dier because he is… you guessed it, a slow player who is poor on the ball. I am surprised that Udogie plays as many minutes as he does considering that he returned from a very serious long term injury. I am surprised that we payed as much as we did for Brennan Johnson - not his quality, but his price tag.
Considering his performances over preseason and the past few games, one really wonders why Djed Spence has been so significantly marginalized and left out of the Europa league squad.
However, despite all this, the least that we can do as fans is repay the faith he showed to our club at our worst and support the guy through what appears to be a historic low.

People are forgetting Liverpool have only conceded 3 goals in one other game this season (so far). We scored 3 goals against the best team in Europe and England right now (top of Champs League and Premier League). They had an almost full squad (except I think Konate) who are fit and fresh and on form. We had a makeshift defence with a RB as LB who has barely played recently, an 18 year old at CB who is a midfielder, our 3rd choice centre back and a knackered Porto - and Forster in goal who has barely played in the last few years.
Yes, it would have been great to not concede 6 goals as that hurts, especially at home. BUT - there are a lot of positives to take from this game and season so far.

I am 61 and have been going to Tottenham for longer than I care to remember. The last time we won the league I wasn't even a twinkle in my old man's eye! The best times I had supporting Tottenham were the 80's we had good players who won FA Cups, League Cups and Uefa Cups but were really never close to winning the league. Most of those cups that we used to win have been hoovered up by today's money teams who didn't win much at all back then (we all know who I am talking about) (that's where the impatience comes from and why Harry Kane remains trophy less). To win anything is doubly difficult due to resources available to some teams now. Also we have done the manager merry-go-round to no avail and frankly I am bored of that prospect and who is going to come in and make a difference anyway? That is not to say I think Ange is perfect there is no way we can continue like this and I do think he is going to have to reconsider the way we defend and game management particularly when we have a good lead because if he doesn't he will lose all the fans and his job. Cheers Ali.

Sorry Alasdair. It doesn’t sit right with me that you’re sitting here excusing a 6 goal battering. You say Archie Gray and Spence played well but they were part of conceding 6 goals and these defenders kept out City’s attack 4-0, put 5 past Soton and kept United out until Forster gave them 2 goals for free. Liverpool had 9 big chances and could (should) have scored more. It’s the system and Ange’s lack of rotation that has cost us. Why did he not rest Udogie/Porro for Spence before they got overplayed? For this game he should’ve subbed Udogie on much sooner and moved Spence to the right, probably started one of BJ/Werner and Bergvall in midfield, just to keep energy levels up. I’ve never seen so many excuses for a pathetic battering. When we’re conceding the same goal time after time, a long ball over the backline, do something about it! No, “it’s just who we are mate”. And why is the alternative to Angeball boring defensive play? It doesn’t have to be, how about being balanced and working on weak areas of the team? No, that would make too much sense. This club is rotten to the core, stop excusing it. This is the first time since Redknapp took over from Ramos we’ve been bottom table come Christmas. Full team or not, we haven’t been consistent since Chelsea (H) last season. Also, adapting play to suit the players available to your disposal is NOT abandoning your principles, it’s adapting to the current situation. When he knows Forster is nervous from the United game, tell him to make easy passes for the opening 20 minutes or so, not to make more risky passes that almost cost us goals because “that’s on me, mate”. It doesn’t have to be two extremes all the time.

Manchester City lost Rodri and they detriorated immediately and they had no shame in using the loss of Rodri as an excuse.
When Liverpool lost Van Dyke they could not compete for the title.

Greetings from Sydney. When it comes to issues with the decimated Spurs team, the pundits are looking looking, mostly, in the wrong direction. The front five are exhausted. In Ange's system (Spurs, Celtic, Yokohama) the team defends from the front. The front five are the key to defending. Son, Kulu, Solanke, Maddison and Sarr are spent. Because there is no front five depth on the bench, they have had to play game after game. I'd love to see statistics on how many minutes the starting front five tonight have played across all games since the Man City win. I bet it's significantly higher than for LFC's front five or ManU from Thursday night. No Odobert, Moore, Richarlison & Bentancur, and a lack of Premier League ready transfers over the summer has left the squad running on fumes. I'm surprised they played as well as they did under the circumstances.

I'm standing with Ange here - the players love playing for him and that's the key barometer for me. Once the backline injuries are healed, we will see more stability in our defending and results. It's clear the team needs another CB for rotation, unless Dorrington is to come good sooner than later. Phillips and Vuskovich are not ready to start in the prem yet. Archie Gray has been great considering what Ange has asked of him but we really need him for RB rotation with Porro, who has already played over 1800 minutes this season. This style demands depth; time to open the checkbook, Daniel.

The defensive structure has to change - you are right!. Can any player be an excellent attacker and a great defender? Can the human body do it without injury? Why, in the name of Beelzebub, can we spend many millions of dollars, buy 14 players that Ange wants, and still not have enough players. How do Liverpool do it? Can we not learn from them? There must be a way to do it. Liverpool, apparently have enough fit people to run two high quality teams, one for the Cup and another for the League? How do they do it? Are they Supermen? WHY DON'T WE LEARN FROM OTHER TEAMS AND STOP BEING SO STUBBORN!

Ally some of the fans were briefly and intermittently singing his name in a half hearted way there wasn't any resounding support for him across the stadium. I think you are seriously fooling yourself if you believe otherwise as it was a pretty apathetic atmosphere at the ground yesterday. The unquestioning support for him by some sections of the fanbase is beginning to sound more cultist in it's nature than anything based on any consistent evidence (I am ambiguous about him tbh and not saying he should be sacked either). I get all the excuses about the injuries but we had this all last season around the same time, and when all the players came back after Christmas (basically the same set of players and defenders as we have this season) we were terrible until the end of the season anyway. And those type of poor performances have persisted despite the ocassional glimpses of brilliance this season. As for the manager complaining about having to answer the same old questons maybe if he didn't keep on making the same old mistakes he wouldn't keep getting asked them.

I disagree, the support for Ange was no doubt there. The younger fans want Ange out as they don't see the bigger picture, the style of play is exciting and everything real Spurs fans want, it's the quality of signing that Levy brings in that needs to be questioned. Give Ange the right quality and we will be a force to reckon with. The sooner Levy and ENIC get out of this club the better. Levy doesn't want players sitting on the bench earning massive wages, therefore our squad will never be good enough to win anything. You have to have a squad, where you have two players for each position that are equally as good as each other, and of a good enough quality. 24 years of doing it Levy's way doesn't work. If Postecoglou believes what he says, it appears a key part of his approach is playing the same way in all situations. That would mean ignoring score, time remaining, and how the other side is adjusting to Spurs. It also implies you play the same way if the opponent is Liverpool or Southampton. That's fairly radical and it is getting glossed over. The assumption here focused on what is being built and how Spurs will play after the injured players return. But the question will remain, is such an unusual approach viable? Is the focus more on entertainment than results? If someone told you there was no gravity and it was safe to jump out a building you wouldn't because you know there are consequences. Taking Postecoglou at his word, isn't he really saying that football gravity (the minimum things any reasonable coach must do and account for) doesn't exist? Do some due diligence and ask people who are in the profession if this can work, or at least look at what the ones who have commented are saying. Blind Faith was a fine English band, but a terrible way to look at a football system.

Is Ange the guy to bring Pep levels of success? Probably not. Does his football bring me joy and does it allow us to, on our day, win a game of football against nearly everyone? Yeah. I think most fans would much rather hear about how he sees Gray and Bergvall developing (whether Gray could end up as a CB, whether Bergvall is a 6, an 8, or a 10); and what he’s doing to stop teams from isolating Dragusin in possession & to improve his general in-possession play

    Tottenham Fans are the worst..
What Devine right do you have to win something. Your team doesn’t win anything. So STFU support your team through thick and thin and just maybe long enough for a manager to do something. The Fans are the problem. Not the board, not the managers, no the players. The fickle fanbase with no patience, with an inability to support or follow through are the PROBLEM!!

I'm a bit tired of hearing that this guy "Has a clear vision for the club" that fact is, it's now Christmas and we are 11th in the table. There is no excuse on the planet which makes conceding 6 goals at home ok.

Zabarnyi and Huijsen are 22 and 19. They've kept clean sheets against Spurs, United, City and Arsenal. They dont have better FBs alongside them that Spurs have. Is Iroala putting them in better situations to succeed, does he have better tactics?

Forster continued to suggest he got injured against MU, with exaggerated use of his feet and difficulty getting into a crouching position.
If that's true then it raises the question of: are Austin and Whiteman so poor they still can't be brought on in an emergency?

Prior to yesterday, Newcastle were the only team to put three past Liverpool in any competition this season. Yes, we conceded six, but Djed and Archie and Radu were all immense, Deki was unplayable, Big Dom was dogged; even Biss and Pape were pretty decent, but what could they do against the continuous balls over the top? What could our boys, as knackered as they were, do against the gegenpressing of fitter, sharper, fully rested players? Nothing, which is why our passes were often anticipated and intercepted, and one-on-one duels were lost all over the pitch.
Back in January 2021, Liverpool came and tonked us 3-1. The next day I was asked at work what I'd thought of the game. I replied, "It was like watching Germany invade Poland." Yesterday, I got that feeling all over again, except that instead of circling the wagons as under Jose, we struck back even when it was obvious that all was lost. That is what the fans in the stadium were cheering.

I understand what you are saying about the thrown together defence. However if you have that to deal with surely adjust your team for that game ? Maybe try slightly different tatics for that game .. yes you might want to play " your way " but come on if you cant adjust for a few games is stupid .

100%. Don't have the personnel? Adjust the tactics. Remaining players are exhausted from the current schedule? Adjust the tactics. Ange let the team get whipped. We might have still lost but we play Forest away in three days. Adjust the tactics.

I think he doesn't seem to see that he doesn't have to stop training his beliefs and style, but for odd games when the personal isn't right for the game then just adjust your tactics a little , Liverpool would not of expected a different style from us , we might of even caught them unaware . It comes across as quite arrogant to the situation , I like Ange he just needs to be able to adjust to the squad availability.

The lack of a DM who would hold their position was obvious. Szoboszlai killed us, because we failed to cut out balls bypassing midfield. Still giving the ball away far too much. Particularly Bissouma, and Sarr. Sonny seems to have lost a yard. Still brave in defeat.

If you don't have the full squad to choose from then you have to tailor the team to suit- Ange is running your players into the ground full stop

Honest to God, I'd rather lose 6-3 than 2-1 in stoppage time after being pinned in our end for 90 minutes. Bring in someone to improve our defense maybe, but that wAs a tired team playing a team firing on all cylinders.

Sorry Alastair - As a football reporter you are missing some essential points. The criticism is not about playing a different way. It's about periods of game management. Spurs have just got back into the game. So you manage it so the coach can talk to the players about being one goal behind instead we'd lost the game when Spurs went 3-1 down. That goal was largely caused by Djed Spence trying to press Trent 40 yards away from the area so Trent just lifted the ball over and Djed is neutralised. Also, recently we've seen teams like Chelsea, Fulham and Liverpool that are so well coached. What stood out was every Liverpool player had a player to pass to whereas we had no out balls. So often we went down the flanks and Dejan and/or Son or Djed were surrounded by three Liverpool players. We played as individuals not as a team. That is the coaching not the players. We paid big money for some of these young players. If a hypothetical Alex Ferguson had such a depleted team would he have been bold and used the kids? He won the League with kids in 1995 - 1996. Fans loved Poch. His teams did not score as may goals as Ange but the defence was so much better. Here's a stat. Poch reached 67 games on 1st October 2015. His team had scored 105 and conceded 78 and lost 18. Everyone loved Poch's football. Ange' team, after Sunday has scored 134 but conceded 101 and lost 22. This is not JUST about the current injuries. This is about the coaching and the methodology and an experienced journalist like you is not helping fans when they read or listen to you by not looking at the bigger picture and accepting the line that this is a recent problem.

I don’t think we should get rid of Ange but I think Alistair Gold is a biased judge of our managerial situation. He will never speak negatively of Ange for professional reasons. Even when Conte’s reign became clearly untenable, Ali would not put his professional relationship with the club at risk and speak what was clear for all to see.

"a right back playing at left back in second ever premier league start... an over user, over loaded right back who just looks like he's running on empty.." There is a solution to both of these problems, and that lies squarely on the manager who refused to give Spence minutes despite how good he has looked every time he's been on the pitch. I don't mind the loss to Liverpool, they are clearly the better side, but to absolve the manager of all blame for our current predicament is a bit much. He hasn't utilized his squad and rushing both our starting CB back was asking for disaster.

I think, Ali, that leeway wasn’t given to Jose or Conte because they generally acted like they were too good for the club, and with their turgid style it couldn’t work.

  • @purehyperbole5727

Ange is using injuries as an excuse. Injuries that his style of play is probably causing, and that the club should be able to cope with as it should be able to provide a quality squad.

We now live in a world where people have short attention spans. They want (fairly) instant gratification. The Tottenham board have been rather like that too. If Fergie had started his managerial career in this decade's febrile environment he would not have survived more than two years. The same goes for Wenger. Ange has my sympathy. During Conte's reign there was the fan clamour, 'We want our Tottenham back!' Well Ange has delivered on that front and I think this is why there is still strong support for Ange in some quarters. He deserves the squad to be strengthened again in January and the summer. If by next Christmas we are in the bottom half of the table then perhaps I'll change my mind.
Thanks for your ongoing dedicated coverage, it is appreciated.
