    17:21 - That was what I was thinking along with a lot of others. Romero has had too many lapses probably down to fatigue. My own personal hottake is that Ange is learning on the fly and not bringing a wealth of experience to the situation. He should be rotating players more as all the players that played midweek looked gassed.

    • @orinorio1
      @orinorio1 2 месяца назад +1

      I thought he would have played Spence over Perro and Radu over Romero. I have also notice that when Romero gets fatigue he lapses. He isn't as sharp. After the IB Radu is able to play in the EL again. So Romero will be rested.

    I was definitely critical of Ange's lack of change, but his post match comments really were poor. It's his job to get us 'undeserved results' and we don't have the luxury of throwing away points in the Prem to prove a point. The players absolutely need to shoulder some blame, but Ange really did make a mess of this.

    Cluelees idiots mentioning ange stood there and did nothing. Just a question: Who is Ange meant to replace Romero, Vdv and Udogie with? Maybe Spence for Udogie. These are the players who cost us the game. We dont have replacements. The only mistake i thought ange made was not getting Udogie straight off after that disgraceful first goal effort and not getting Bentancur off earlier. Hecouldd have brought Moore on earlier as well but with the team playing so poorly I don't know if that would have made any difference.

    Love Ange, but if you play the high line and you have access to some quality subs, you need to replace players from the 60 minute mark. Gives the team fresh legs. Spence hasn’t been playing and would be chomping at the bit. Bringing Moore on for Werner. Bringing Biss or Sarr on or both. Gives the team impetus. Been saying this since he started and will continue until the end off his reign. Ange is still the man for the job in rebuilding the Spurs, it’s still a young team, they are learning and I’m sure Ange is as well, hopefully won’t see what happened with Porro and Johnson again, it is concerning that he doesn’t coach on the run like Pep does,I’ll be honest. The whole mix up between Porro and Johnson could have been avoided by Ange simply telling Johnson to stick to the left back. Sitting back with your arms folded just doesn’t work in the best league in the world. Have to be able to adapt formations and players on the run.

  • @neilcalton
    @neilcalton 2 месяца назад +3

    Thanks for having the strength to make a video after that mare of a performance, Alasdair. I agree with you that Ange needed to react sooner with his subs. I would have brought on Spence or Gray for Werner after the second Brighton goal and given them freedom to roam where needed either side of the pitch. In his post-match interview Ange claimed that substitutions and all those kind of things were totally irrelevant to him, and if you're not competitive you don't deserve to win. Which begs the question of whether any subs that he could have brought on might well have shown the competitive spirit that he wanted. It was almost as if he wanted to punish the team and let them fall to defeat. To do nothing until the last 10 minutes was difficult for us mere fans to comprehend.

    I mentioned as a comment to your Gold & Guest podcast , that from the NBC's live coverage I started to worry before the end of the first half. Saying that we needed a third goal either just before the end of that half or just at the beginning of the second like our second goal at Man U. Yes, as a Spurs support since 1959 my antenna is always set on 'spot the worrying signs' until we are 4 ahead with only 10 minutes to go. But my antenna did pick out our full backs, both players I admire, but especially Udogie worried me. He seemed slow and clumsy in the first half, one very poor pass and on pass that he failed to move for and let go out. He looked unfit whether physically or mentally I don't know, but he also seemed risk adverse in his movement. I said I hope Ange puts Spence on at half time to my wife who was, as always paying attention to the game by updating her Facebook contacts which unfortunately does not include anyone with influence over the manager. Does Ange have someone in the stand telling him about the lack of movement of individual players that is easier to assess from an elevation? I was watching from 5000 miles away but viewing from the stand my antenna did foretell a nightmare of a second half for Udogie!

    Son even though he is perceived as a quiet leader. We’ve had many videos that showed the opposite. Even Brennan and Maddison have refuted it. Romero should’ve been commanding his backline and telling them what to do. Maddison as well should’ve held his side of the pitch accountable.

    My two biggest issues so far this season:
    1. Where is the absolute determination to defend? We don't stop crosses into the box, every player seems terrified of actually putting the ball out of play. I'm all for playing, but what on earth was Bentacaur doing for the 3rd goal? Just put it out for a corner.
    2. The transfer window seems to be looking worse as each week passes. Werner clearly isnt the answer. I appreciate the "Johnson got stick, now it's Werner's turn" - big difference is that Johnson hasnt had 7 years of not being able to score a goal.
    It is clearly obvious that Ange doesnt trust the young players that he bought as well.
    To not make any changes when EVERYONE could see what was happening is dreadful from a top level coach. This was every bit as bad as the performances under Nuno/Conte

    The glaring issue with Spurs, which often goes unspoken, is the lack of a strong, commanding captain. Historically, Spurs' most successful teams always had a tough, authoritative leader on the pitch. In recent years, we’ve been missing that. I genuinely believe that one of the reasons Spurs secured their last trophy was due to Jonathan Woodgate’s presence. We are lacking a dominant, vocal figure on the field to push the players, and this absence has been a problem for a considerable time in the club’s history. It’s something that urgently needs addressing. These kind of situations shine light on this.

    If I remember right for the third goal, I saw a replay in which Udogie successfully made the tackle but it bounced off Madders who was right next to him, and past them both for the Brighton player to scoop up and create that chance for Welbeck. Point is, that goal was partly unlucky, but that doesn't change how obviously Brighton were up for it in the second half and we weren't.

    I think it is pure and simple that the team had become complacent given recent results. If we want to be really critical, we could say that again for all that possession in the first half we scored one good goal while Maddison's should have been saved. Even in the first half, there were at least two occassions when Brighton could have had a goal.
    I still think we are on the right track. Yes, Ange has never managed a side at this level but he does have a lot of experience as a manager and I think he will come good.

Also it is not dissimilar to every coach/manger on the planet except English ones apparently! I am not saying you are wrong in totality. I am alluding to the choice I think Ange made at the time, was it wrong? Possibly! Do the Spurs players need to take some concrete tablets and harden the f*ck up? Definitely! The mental weakness and lack of leadership is astonishing from a club that is meant to be one of the big 6. I have been worried about Romero over this season his mental break downs are becoming more frequent and more damaging. Is it mental health or the interplanetary nature of egos colliding? Time will tell.

    Took my 13 year old son to the Amex for his first premier league game. He has been desperate to see Spurs and this was our opportunity, with a Brighton supporting ST holder kindly giving up his tickets. At half time we sat quietly drinking a hot choc in the club lounge and I stupidly told him that even though he'd waited years, this was the game to watch- this was Ange-ball, this was the true Tottenham way....Needless to say, he was crestfallen at full time, but in a cruel way it was also a huge life lesson as a Spurs fan that I hope he carries with him- expect the unexpected with our beloved club, never take a 2 goal lead for granted and most importantly buckle up, as following spurs will be the emotional roller coaster ride of your life.....

    Never was the sigh more warranted. Tottenham's ability to go from the sublime to the ridiculous is both worrying and annoying. The player's performance in the first half was sublime and in the second half ridiculous. Ange's tactics in the first half sublime, his inactivity with substitutions and directing from the touch line in the second ridiculous. Every team we will play in the league and in Europe will have periods of control over the game, if Ange can't find some pragmatic tweaks when opposition are in the assendancy similar capitulations will keep happening and although I think it's way premature the noise to have Ange removed will get louder and louder. Fair play to Brighton.

    I feel like Welbeck missing that sitter was a blessing in disguise for Brighton. Brighton momentum could have been blunted by halftime, and it would have given Spurs something to think about at halftime and make necessarily adjustments for the 2nd half. Instead, they just couldn't stop the momentum once Brighton started scoring early in the 2nd half.

    Thanks for your insight. Always valuable listening. I get the feeling that Ange is going to persist with his vision. Only the reality of the current situation is no where near it. Players just arent capable of maintaining the required style and philosophy over and over for 3 games a week. It took one half for a young opposition coach to outdo where the squad is at. What Ange needs is to be flexible until he has the squad depth to match his process. Maybe that will be when we have a stronger squad to interchange players that are letting down him, the side and the fans. So no one gets complacent. This isnt going to happen in one or two windows. Its going to be more of the same for the rest of this season.

However it doesn’t take a professional eye to see that full throttle aggressive football requires fresh legs earlier in the second half than is our standard.. Might even save a few hamstrings? Why are we playing Werner when week after week when he plays awful, misses chances, passes to no one. The senior players are weak cowards. Romero was not tired, Romero switches off far to often. To such a point he has cost us so many points this season already. Would rahte rplay Drag than Romero.
    Then their is players like Djed and Reguilon, Philips not being included in squad lists... Or being loaned out. Playing Gray as a CB.... Why are we not giving Philips to bed time in with the team

    Watching the match I felt in the first half it was too easy for Spurs. They were in behind at will. Just a few quick passes. I felt that if Brighton scored they would go on to win the match. When they got the first goal that was it. Ange not making subs until the 70th min will slated though think He was shellshock at what was happening. I was thinking that Destiny should have been taken off after the first Brighton goal. He made a mistake and never recovered. Spence coming on would have added freshness. Also though Radu should have started over Romero. What is being notice about Romero is when he starts to get tired he switches of. The 2nd Brighton goal came about due to him rushing out and missing the player and ball. 3rd Brighton goal Romero just watch Welbeck. Romero was the captain when he faded Spurs faded. Benta faded badly too. Brighton wanted it more and got the win. Spurs have been on the good side of a comeback win so being on the wrong end of one can be taken.

    In his 26 years of coaching he knows the loss is going to speed up the development. He’s always talking about how he’s explained things over and over but until it happens some players don’t take it onboard. The late substitution is partly about wanting to truly see where they are at despite 5 wins and if there was a reaction plus not introduce a panicked reactionary mindset which creates doubts for future games. Hard loss but this is all about long term still, stay the course folks, Ange knows what’s he’s doing. The first half shows we have an identity it’s about maintaining it.

    Brighton are a decent side and were obviously going to come at them in the second half. They had nothing to lose. All the team had to do was be compact and defend until Brighton ran out of steam and hit them on the break. Another goal and game over. It's what our neighbours would have done in the same position. It suits Arteta fine but not Postecoglu. He has to go for everything all of the time. Poor tactics and game management gave away three points. Hope we don't play like this in Europe - against the better teams we'll get beaten.

    No need to complicate the explanations or demand removing the manager. It should be easy for the manager to understand:
    You cannot maintain the same stamina for such intensive play as occured in the first half. There should have been two or three changes if not at the start of the 2nd half, then absolutely after Brighton's first goal.

    Romero should have covered Porro on cross for Brighton's first goal but really not Romero 's fault , midfielder should have been there to cover Porro ( defensive midfielder) having seen B winger giving us huge problems all the time. Plan B should have been , keep it tight for 20 minutes , no stupid mistakes , then perhaps a third could have been scored. Instead , Plan A all out attack and we suffered. Third goal was the worst for passive defending. Shocking second half performance and ruins another Sunday. What can you say ?
