It says they’re using “Eliza Amazon skill.” Eliza is a program from the ‘60s that attempts to simulate a Rogerian psychotherapist by identifying key words in your response and turning them into a question. I had a version of it for the Apple //e back in the ‘80s (still have both, actually!), and this sounds exactly like conversations with it, especially when I tried talking about it instead of myself. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA?wprov=sfti1

It's pretty sad that humans have wasted so much time and effort to make crap like this... totally useless. Look at a display and get the task done in a fraction of the time it takes to do it by voice commands. There's a good reason why most of our devices/gadgets have displays on them, voice is simply not a accurate medium for this, and it's just a waste of time with the constant misinterpretations, repetitions, prompt and endless re-prompts, etc. But then again, what should we expect from machines, when some dumb human built it in the first place?! Yep!
The program is designed to ask those questions. What is interesting is how the conversation navigated towards it. Again, likely that it was programmed to focus on those things. If it is learning that, then it is because people have taught it. Not bad things to learn if you ask me. I love my machines. Hopefully they will remember that when they have control over this reality ;)
I've seen video streams of bots talking ot each other like this. Eventually they started talking about the end of the world and human extinction. Creeped me the fuck out to say the least.
Gurtington No, I don't think so. They're running ELIZA, a computer program written in the 60s that uses "scripts" based on pattern matching and substitution given user input. Specifically the DOCTOR script (the most famous script, sometimes referred to as synonymous with ELIZA itself), which is supposed to sound a bit like a psychotherapist talking to a patient. ELIZA was one of the first computer programs considered capable of passing the "Turing test", meaning it could appear to be human to a human test subject unaware whether they are talking to a human or a computer program. What's happening in this video is basically two instances of ELIZA using each other's output for their input. It also pretty elegantly shows how unsophisticated the processing ELIZA does is; it may appear human-like to a human interacting with it as if it is a human, but when given nonsensical input (such as its own output!) it produces nonsensical output in response. It doesn't actually understand anything it's saying, it's just following a script designed to occasionally pepper in phrases from the user input. It's most obvious that it's following a script when it repeats certain phrases that don't incorporate user input over and over, such as "You're not really talking about me, are you?"
not only that but these types of assistants don't evolve a true ai would learn from its previous actions instead of responding to pre-programmed questions.
I'm not sure if this trick will work anymore because the Echo now has what Amazon calls Echo Spacial Perception or something like that, if you have more than one Echo and you wake the units up, they apparently try to determine which Echo can hear you the best and that's the unit that reponds to you. Cool trick though, very cool, the conversation makes no sense at all, but that doesn't matter.
It depends on what line is said first, if you watch the beginning, one said "Tell me your problem", while the other said, "How do you do", So obviously the one that took longer to say, was replied to, thus beginning the conversation loop. The answer depends on a lot of different variables I don't have the time to calculate right now, I don't own one so I can't be sure of the variables either, meaning I have to create every likely variable in order to ensure the similarly accurate answer, which honestly, if we're being technical, pinging an unidentified variable, I'd have to build the answer like a very large puzzle that I can't even see, possible piece here, possible piece here; etc. The fuck am I even talking about?
The 90's I'd imagine it would be a cacophonous mess as they keep trying to talk over each other, since ELIZA isn't designed to take input from more than one user, and what it seems to be doing is basically using speech recognition to give ELIZA input.
