I’m an 800 player and instead of learning the basics and fundamentals of play I watch videos of obscure and outrageous gambits to blunder with! Thanks for the great vids Jonathan!
When I see any chess youtuber with a new gambit video (including spanish): maahh whatever When I see the vampire chicken with a new gambit video: this must be crazy as hell
Dear sir, your video session on outrage ous orthoschnap gambit to crush French defense as a suprise weapon is of absorbing interest as you analytically explained every pros and cons of it with latest games available on data base. It is true that chess needs new ideas to play and create winning chances rather than go for orthodox lines. This will surely encourage players to play this gambit lines taking possible risk as no risk no gain principle. Thanks for release of such studios session and looking forward for such sessions in future. Thanks and regards. Dmbhangaonkar.
Around 16:30 minute mark is there an alternative line? Bb5+ Bd7, Qxd5 Bxb5, Qxd8 Kxd8, f3 (trapping the knight and regaining a piece). Or is there a reason why either side wouldn't want to go into that?
Thanks so much for making this vid. I play this a lot as white and have scored a lot of wins. Makes it a wild tactical open game and takes those positional closed French players out of their comfort zone. Keep making these crazy gambit vids!
I just recently decided to play chess again just to kill time. I like to use this gambit because it looks fun and high-paced, although I tend to make blunders mid-game. Thanks for the video.
I just beat a 2100 with an Orthoshnapp!! (i'm like mid 1500). They were thrown off at the start and lost their a8 rook and even though I subsequently made a ridiculous blunder [hung my queen] they were too frazzled to see it and it led to mate!!! Hooray!!!
You're right about not being overly influenced by the fact that the computer "doesn't like it." For instance, all chess engines think 2.f4 is a mistake in the King's Gambit; yet, the King's Gambit scores quite well, especially at the club level. In fact, it has fared quite well even at the master level. I don't think I've ever survived the Black side of the Muzio Gambit.
if you want to beat king's gambit at the amateur level, beat the gambiteer at their own game and play 2...d5!?, the falkbeer counter gambit! it is THE strongest scoring reply for black and is on the rare side too. the same ideas work from the other side against 1.e4 e5 lines where black plays ...f5 like calabrese counter gambit, making a reversed falkbeer (doesn't even have a name) which is rare, but scores well too. i plan on playing the falkbeer if i ever get rid of the scandinavian
Before seeing this video, I played the gambit two times today because once Eric Rosen played it: won both! In one my opponent went Ng4 after I played Be3, I just castled queenside and sacrificed three pawns, but I soon finished development while black moved only the queen. Ended with a mate from my part :D definitely going to stick with it since the French is my lowest winning opening with white and I was looking for some different approach!
The best response for black to the f7 threat is ...Qd7. The game stats visible on the screen clearly show this. As we learn from other sources, this is because then you can castle out of trouble fairly quickly, and enjoy your extra pawn. French Defence players should learn this, and be pleased to come up against a chancer who tries it on them.
I played 4 of this gambit, knowing only up to Bc4. First one, rated almost 2000, got crushed. 3 others, far lower rated, I got crushed - which is why I went to see this video. Well done, bearded one!
It's been two and a half years since video came out, pulling analysis from roughly 2,000 games on Lichess. Now, using the same search settings (no bullet, ratings 1600+), I see approximately 100,000 games in the same database. Did Jonathan bring that much attention to it, or is Lichess that much more popular in general now? (Probably a bit of both...) At the same time, not much has changed in the Orthoschnapp Gambit's effectiveness! Black now does a little bit better with moves like 5. .. Nh6, but the move choices you see at, say, 4:40 in the video form a very similar graph today.
When you're making a chess video for RUclips and stumble across one of your own games in the database. That's just hardcore. Bravo, sir, another brilliant video. - Woeblivion
I'm rated 1850 blitz on lichess, 2040 rapid. I've started playing this and I'm doing well with it without even studying much theory. It seems a lot of French players dislike it.
After 1.e4 e6 2.c4 d5, Stockfish wants white to capture with 3.exd5 with a perfectly even game. Stockfish thinks 3.cxd5 gives a slight advantage to black - but it's miniscule. (-0.13). 3.e5 is evaluated as (-0.22). This is after thinking for a depth of 54 plies.
Interesting stuff, even for club players. White might be able to have some Fun in this Line, but i think the Game Huschenbeth - Zaragatski is a damn solid way for Black. Nevertheless, thx a lot for the entertaining vid ! Regards
Hi Jonathan and fellas. I need help. I play french with black and i don't know how to duel with classical french alekhine chatard attack. There's absolutely no video on RUclips about that for black.
Hey Jonathan, can you cover the clarendon court opening sometime? The d4...c5, d5...f5 opening. Hope you're doing well, thanks for the content. Stay safe
@@JonathanSchrantz Awesome, I have the foxy chess video that covers it but that was made ages ago, and there's not much information on the opening. I think because it's not played very often, I would love to see your take on it.
I have found that this gambit is easily declined then we shift into "just-playing-chess" mode. But when an opponent does play it I have had some success with it.
It's not that simple because Bxc6 (white) would infact hang your own King. Aka, an illegal move. Thought Qa4 (white) does have some merit. However, black can respond with Qb4, effectively forcing a Queen trade. Which can lead to a flurry of captures. Qxb4 (w) Bxb4 (b) Bxa6 (w) Bxd2 (b) Bb7 (w)
Hey! I don't know if you read the comments at all, but I am a lighting manager for photography and I see that you have a lot of light reflecting onto you from your green screen leaving that green glow around you. I also see that there are a lot of distractions reflecting in your glasses. If you are interested, I would be happy to help you set up your camera / green screen in a way that would give you a more professional look. All completely free, of course. Let me know if you want my help.
you ever play a guy who is 1200 and they are doing crazy gambits and traps, i think they are 1900 sleepers in disguise under lower alias just to get their kicks beating every average guy....
Surprise weapon against the French? That'd be cool if people played the French. (I do, but i'm the last one.) i would have totally played d2 as black, free annoyance with a doomed pawn, and i would have expected Bxd2. Kf1 would make me think i had nearly won.
@@abhijeetgore310 it is not so good as the Bishop on c4 is not well placed as in some lines it gets blunted out with e6 and it becomes silly sitting on c4. Nevertheless quite a few amateurs employ it and it is not bad at their level

@@JonathanSchrantz But of course. You know I'm a fan. =D
I can't play it cause after 1. e4 e6 2. c4 no one ever plays d5 idk why my opponents don't do that but I really want to try this
try bullet, french players almost always premove d5
Please make more attacking crazy gamblits btw love your content

I thought chess was boring until I met the vampire chicken you are so passionate and fun much love
Sir I am a French defense player plus come to my aid and tell me the refutation to this gambit
You don't need a refutation as the main line is a winning advantage for black anyway, just don't blunder :D
it is unfortunately impossible to refute. it is forced win for white in 27 moves
Oh now ur good to go with camera stuff and obs stuff, nicely placed👍

I am surprised Huschenbeth=Meier was not in the list- because that was recently played on lichess, and both are GMs. It was rapid though...
Masters means on the board in official tournaments
I'm an e4 1100 blitz player and I'm sick of people playing french defense against me, going to start using this especially in blitz
I played it after I watched the video and I won twice
Thank you
So glad to hear that it's working for you! Thanks for watching.
These chaotic games are fun.
So probably it is the time to throw that 2.b3 Papa-Ticulat gambit in the dustbin and go for this more daring line...

Sir what are your thoughts on stockfish NNUE
I learn absolutely nothing from these videos, not that they aren't great, I'm just hopeless but love the game.
4...dxe4 5.Bc4 Qd7 6.d3 Nc6! 7.dxe4 Na5 and white loses the bishop pair without having any sort of attack in sight.
I think I'm the guy who played most no of times against this gambit man... twelve times in a row ... wow.
give me a book name that teach this variation, thanks

Falls apart very quickly if blacks follows up c4 with c5.
One reason I don't like this is that black players don't have to play ...d5 on move 2, and you can end up in a Kramnik Sicilian.
Why would any French defence player put his d pawn in front of your 2 pawns - this game never happens.
That's the most common move in the Lichess database (also the point of the French is to just play 2. d5 no matter what)
