Personally I think Daniel shutting down talk of his sexuality is just a way to keep Louis at a distance and maintain control over the interview. Everytime Louis attempted to connect with Daniel or elicit any sympathy from him Daniel rebuffed it. He's got his boundaries with his subject firmly established and defending them very aggressively. I would not be surprised if he just straight up lied to Louis in that moment.
I could be wrong but I don't think the gender of his partner is ever addressed, we only see evidence of having had a kid, but there's also lots of AIDs crisis imagery at the start iirc? I didn't read Daniel as straight either but who knows maybe he is in this show
Maybe he was that shoked after being attacked by Louis that he couldn't deal with men anymore and got merried to a woman. Twice. I imagine he got divorced pretty soon after.
Of course he did... It was very clear in the narrative of the entire episode.

I don't think they straight-washed Daniel at all! He seemed very defensive to me, and Louis seemed pretty unconvinced overall.
I agree, I like to believe Louis took many years to fully accept his sexuality, probably 100+ years, and we're seeing daniel as physically older than Louis, but mentally immature. It's why all his marriages are shown as failed, instead of like giving him an absent or dead wife. Daniel is still battling internalized homophobia.
The story's focus is not on Daniel's sexuality, iwtv is about Louis' story, these fans of Daniel have to understand that the show is not about him, Daniel is visibly a guy in the closet and he feels triggers for that, and for sure this will be addressed later, people need to calm down.
@@leticiamv Facts. In the book Iwtv I don't even think he was named. He was called BOY and that's it. They are lucky they got this much. It's from Daniel x Armand fans who center the series on them, despite the little content in the overall series.

Yup, I do think the same. Personally I think the fandom got used to fanfiction too much on this; no one is actually "gay" in the books but rather they're all whoring around indifferent of gender and sex. I feel like some of the hyped fans are retconning the story to make everyone explicitly gay when vampires in TVC universe don't have sexual preference or interest in sex at all, only blood lust. Fujoshi's much.
Yeah, I feel think there's a few different things that could be going on here. For the moment I'm guessing this isn't the final word on Daniel's sexuality. My biggest thought it that he was aggressive enough with Louis that he simply want to shut down that type of personal connection or identyfing with him in anyway just yet.

They complain about it but in the movie (so acclaimed) the biggest straight washing was done, giving Louis a dead wife
My thoughts on Daniel: Maybe the reason he shuts down talk of his sexuality and says he was only at the gay bar for drugs is because he already met Armand in this show and Armand and he had a falling out. So it hurts to talk about it and he knows Louis knows Armand. Maybe there's 50 years of repressed hatred and jealousy towards Louis for this reason. I hope we see Armand come back into Daniel's life and love him as he is. Maybe there's more to Daniel's story than what we're getting.
I definitely got a "Daniel doth protest too much" vibe from that exchange.
At the comiccon panel they said that fans of Daniel and Armand shouldn't worry, there will be history. They will probably show it with the actor who plays young Daniel in the series. I think Daniel is currently a married man and repressed with his sexuality. We will have to see
I definitely think there's way more to Daniel's story than we're led to believe, and I like it. I think that what they're setting up is the fact that after that fateful encounter he pretty much resigned himself to a closeted life, maybe even because of Armand's toxicity towards him, and that this new interview will be an awakening of sorts. In that way they would be able to show the parallel of a life fully lived via Louis and Lestat vs a life lost.

I love this show, I loved the books (1-3 at least, tolerated the rest), and I think constant comparisons are short-changing the series. One, in particular, I find an issue with is just because Anne retconned everything in IWTV after she fell in love with Lestat the character doesn't mean it all adds up. Lestat only killing bad people doesn't explain the slaves and children he killed. I hope this show tries to find a middle ground between Louis lying throughout all of IWTV and Lestat being the one who was 100% truthful. I always had a problem with the fact we were supposed to just ignore everything Louis said in the interview because suddenly Lestat is telling the story. I like to believe we are hearing from two unreliable narrators, like if you hear about the cause of a breakup between two people in a relationship. You will hear two different sides of the same story.

Honestly, when I heard Daniel say “It’s a good place to score, so I did what I had to” I wasn’t thinking he was taking about drugs, but I could be wrong.
I appreciate the fact that the "changes" made, are less new cannon, and more like expanded cannon. The trick of adapting books to film is obliterated by this rewrite for lack of better term.
This first episode feels very much as if Anne was able to completely rewrite the story that in 1970 would have been panned as pornoghropy. The fact that Anne and her son Christopher had deep influence on the screenplay and helping to rewrite her own story in a more honest to her imagination way, and its absolutely glorious 💜
I think Lestat "stopping time" is more of a spell or mental power he used on Louis. When I watched it for the first time, that was the way I interpreted it.
Yes!, I really loved the scenes where he stopped time. I think it was very well thought out as a way to present how Lestat gets inside Louis mind.

am i the only one who thought that this louis is quite insensible compared to the books? lestat "stops" time, and he goes, "oh i guess he'll explain it soon enough" like it was just some party trick. it's hard to be invested in characters that already have cracks in their development early on in the show. i really dislike how almost everything is different in the show compared to the books, both the timeline and character backstories and the very THEMES explored. i'm trying really hard to like this show but so far, it's disappointing.
@@maggyfrog i don't really see it as a crack. louis sees that lestat's power can benefit him, plus if he reacted outwardly to it he would look insane to everyone. louis cares about protecting his reputation and keeping his family comfortable above all else, so of course he's not gonna ask too many questions when this weird hot magic man wants to help him.
I loved this adaptation tbh. When Lestat says to Louis that "he only brings death to those deserving" he's speaking directly to Louis after killing the priest; he delivers murder to anyone else, but only death (his version of it) to those who he thinks are deserving of it (like Nicky and his own family, book-wise). That's why he asks for Louis's consent, he needs to pitch him the idea of companionship, he wants his will, not to take his will (we all know that Lestat's original turning was kinda a metaphor for r.) It's like "we're not having s*x, we're making love". Maybe in future episodes we'll learn that Lestat's victims were actually "bad" people, but I think that line means something else here.
For me I think it is highly perspective on what "deserving" means. Human morality and vampire morality are very different. He may have seen Lily suffering being bought and sold and that she "deserves" better or release from her cage of sex work.
Lestat clearly doesn't only kill "bad" people-he kills anyone that he personally deems offensive &/or doesn't deem interesting-enough-to-live.
(Like.. He doesn't really seem to follow any logic but his own personal bias &/or judgment as to who does and doesn't "deserve" to live or die.)
I think he probably defines "deserving" very differently than we (and Louis) do.
_But I also do agree that he may make some personal distinction between killing to feed versus killing just to kill[, or something like that], too._
Why do you love this "adaptation" when it's really not? This is Generic Vampire show with Anne Rice name attached to it. The show runners bacterized a lot of the themes and concepts within the novels. I guess I'm in the minority here but I really can't understand how or why people like you who call yourselves fans of the books are eating this up when it fundamentally changes what made the original novels good. This show is pandering and shallow to say the least.
I love the first episode. It’s true to the core and spirit of the novel despite of the ( window dressing) changes. It is beautiful, unsettling, sensual , violent and hypnotic. Jakob Anderson and the writers did a great job fleshing out Louis character. Sam Reid’s Lestat is actually French in this one. He is as charming and seductive as he is dangerous and cruel when he is wounded.He is LESTAT .Daniel( thank God) has personality and spunk. Anne Rice’s beautiful and mournful prose is felt throughout the episode.

Personally I think this Louis is a much more interesting character entirely than Louis in the book which I guess is a spicy opinion to have. I always felt Louis fell flat to me compared to anne rice's other characters and was too much of a POV for the reader for me to fully get into him as a person. Which I suppose is a better thing for a book character than it is for a show character. I think they made changes that improved on the source material for the format they were portraying them in to be honest.
I think Paul's death is gonna get circled back on. Because Paul thinks God speaks to him in his head, and Lestat can speak to people in their head.
They both even hint that they've heard each other's thoughts -- Paul says something like "He spoke to me without moving his lips" and Lestat implies that he knew Paul was suicidal.
I have a feeling that it will be brought up again. And Louis will be suspicious that Lestat had something to do with what happened to Paul.

You're just confirming what we all already knew - Lestat is God.
But from what we can see Paul has had mental health issues for sometime and it appears he’s heard birds voices all along.
I thought the time stop thing was Lestat having a psychic conversation with Louis in a split second. To Louis it felt like Lestat stopped time but it was all a projection
I think he’s actually freezing them. Like in the scene when the priest is running towards the gates and they closed on their own, I think lestat has telekinesis or something and uses it to “stop time”

@@sirenluna8844 he meets them before he meets Louis, that's why he seeks Louis. He wants simplicity, to settle down. A lot of things happen to him before he meets Louis, he just never talked about them to him while they lived together because he wanted to forget.

Chronologically speaking it would've been:
1 Magnus, because creator.
2 Armand, because Coven.
3 Marius, because saved by him from sleeping in the sand.
Then finally Akasha and Enkil, because Marius.
He was like ten years into being a vampire when he turned Louis, if I got the dates right...
I'm not gonna lie, you referring to Louis as a "sad wet noodle man" made me laugh.
When Paul asked what Lestat's intentions were I said to myself outloud "He wants the spend ETERNITY with him!!!"
Also the second Paul and Louis got on that roof I thought "Oh no"
I grew up with the books 25 years ago... and I must say: really enjoyed the first episode - very much in fact!
I think the dialogues and the script are very well written (thank god)...and Lestat is just awesome. Holy s**t!
I also really like the dynamic between the (now aged and sick) interviewer Daniel and Louis tremendously. I can't wait to see how it develops.

I just finished the first episode and spent the credits sobbing. They captured the heart, Elisa. They got it. I'm shook.
Good catch about the code switching and the way Louis' accent changes depending on who he's talking to.
I am loving Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid in this. They have great chemistry together. Grey Worm got that glow up. I really enjoyed the first episode. Tom Cruise will probably always be MY Lestat when I reread the books, but I think that Sam's Lestat looks a lot more like his character in the source material. My only complaint with the show so far is the musical score. I guess I've been spoiled by the music in Dark, Westworld, GoT and House of The Dragon. But that's just a minor complaint and not a big deal. Excited to watch this story unfold. I really hope that they'll eventually go back in time and tell Lestat's origin story. Book 2 is my absolute favorite of the whole series.

I think this score is freaking BRILLIANT-as masterful a blending of the more classic together with the more modern as everything else about this tv series' aesthetic is too. It's literally everything, to me; I think it's both amazing in general, and perfect for iwtv[ & this particular take on iwtv especially]. (But that's just me^ ^) 😅😁 🤣🤣 💜

Even if Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles hadn't been among my all-time favorite books-I would had watched this series literally just for that Gray Worm glow-up. Lolll 💜🤍💜
I feel fairly confident that the tv series will almost definitely eventually go back and show us Lestat's backstory-as long as it isn't canceled too soon. ^-^ (but I guess only time will prove me either right or wrong🤷♀️🙃 😹)
I am a big-big fan of book 2, as well, though; so, if they don't adapt it too, I will be severely disappointed in them.
I don't myself have a singular Lestat that is _my_ Lestat, personally, I think they're *_all_* MY Lestats; in different ways, for different reasons!. 🤭🤭😊 😁
My introduction to The Vampire Chronicles was actually first through the 2002 'Queen of The Damned' movie, then going back to the 1990s 'Interview' movie, and finally...at long last, reading the books, beginning with the paperback 3-in-1 omnibus edition of the first three novels bound together! (I suspect .. this may give me a rather atypical perspective. But..Who knows! I can only speak for my own self/experience/, truly. Lolll)
I agree that Sam Reid definitely matches more with Anne Rice's personal vision of Lestat, especially knowing the various faces Anne Rice herself said in the past she either pictured while writing him or could picture playing him in an adaptation(including initially believing that Brad Pitt should have been Lestat and not Louis in the 1990s movie..until Tom Cruise's performance later on won her over), and I think he (Sam Reid) kind of marries all the various differing facets of Lestat together into one whole beautifully marvelously well-but I think Cruise and Townsend both did phenomenal jobs in very different ways at each capturing very different/contrasting facets of Lestat also, rather much like how the various books kinda do to begin with too. ^--^

That scene was so memorable to me. I could feel his anguish though my screen. That was not acting, that was real. That scene alone should get that man some award. The whole cast is just stunningly talented.
Adaptations from book to screen rarely disappoint me because I do not go in thinking they will be 100% faithful to the source material.Even my own novels are different from my screenplay versions and I penned them... I LOVED this episode. LOVED it. I look forward to the rest of the series and can't wait to see where they take it.
I would argue that being faithful to material often means letting it bend to a new shape. It's disappointing when people don't see that if it didn't bend, it would break, and that would be a tragedy.

I was so against the new show and the changes. But i take back all my comments cause i really loved episode 1.
The changes made to Louis are really good and well written and the new Lestat actor changed my mind too. I didnt see him as Lestat when I first saw him cast but oh boy did he do a good job of embodying everything i love about the character.
I hope they end up working alot of Lestats backstory into the show. O have always wanted them to do 'The Vampire Lestat' as its my fav of all the books
I am actually really excited to watch the show when i previously had low expectations.
I think the changes work because the essence of the story being told is the same and is really well thought out.
It feels like the writers understand the source material which is something different from something like Fate the Winx saga as an example.

OMG!!! I love the first episode. I am so glad it got renewed for a second season. I can not wait to see what happens with the rest of the show how much they change and keep. Also I love your channel.
I love Anne Rice because the exact reasons people give for why they can't stand her, are the exact same reasons that fans will say are why they love her. (ie: "She describes a single room's appearance for 20 pages!!") Like, sometimes you need to know everything about a door before it's ripped off it's hinges, Brenda. Duh.
When I was younger that was a good thing, now that I'm older, it feels excessive...and I do get lost after 3 pages about a rug when she goes back to the original thought of going out to hunt.
It's why I fell out of love with her books. I was fairly young when I first read them so I spent a lot of time reading Ann Rice using my library card. That birthday I was given the full set and started reading the series again. I think I got to Tale of the Body Thief when something started to feel strange. There was an entire passage I had no memory of whatsoever. Turns out the library copy was damaged and was physically missing pages which at the time I had not noticed. I just read past the missing dozens of pages and honestly it kinda improved things. I don't say I can't stand her writing but that was a difficult experience to shake off.
I didn't think this day would ever come! I'm glad our Maven enjoyed the first episode and hope she enjoys the rest. But even if she ends up hating this series, her commentary and analysis will still be fascinating.
The "big change" at 44:51....epic! Perfect timing. Also I personally loved the church scene. I thought of it as basically Lestat proposing to Louis in a church quickly followed by them getting married, before god, in blood, fire, and death (the two priest acting as "witnesses"). Lestat pretty much said wedding vows and Louis said "I do."
Plus, it makes sense as Lestat's own twisted 'morality'/way of A.) sticking up for Louis[ who Lestat doesn't think should be ashamed of anything] & B.) lashing out because Louis has been spurning him.
I mean, Ricean vampire morality follows its own individual personal-codes, not intrinsically[ if even remotely] the same the human sense of morality as we know it at all.
As a fan of the books, I really REALLY loved this first episode. The departure from the books was well written and I especially liked the dynamic between Daniel and Louie. Look forward to the upcoming episodes.
I seem to like the TV series quite a bit more than you do, but I do enjoy your take on things & your breakdown of the changes. I also agree largely w/the takeaway of WHO the vampire is in this universe. It’s freedom and actualization of the true self.
I enjoy the changes made to the series. I LOVE the books as well, but if I'm honest, I always found Louis character to be incredibly boring. Just a vehicle for Anne to tell the story of more interesting characters like Lestat, Claudia and Armand. What makes Louis interesting is Lestat's infatuation with him. This series added a more indepth personality to Louis. Gave him layers. And several conflicts to deal with that we're more relatable than the fretting he did in the book. I love the racial aspect tbh. Seeing Lestat and Louis argue about it was very interesting and entertaining. I do agree that the scene where Lestat says his monologue was due to Louis eating rats and that's why he had to intervene. So, it did feel out of place. So far, I'm loving this series.
meh, i disagree. book louis is introverted and much more instrospective, not to mention he had the preconception about himself prior to becoming a vampire that he was basically a "good" person (slaver and all) and that he was religious as well. the SUDDEN twist in his very existence as a predator who has to consume blood is part of his long-simmering anger and resentment toward lestat. he was just suddenly turned into a killer. there was no "grooming masquerading as courtship" as it is in the show. totally different characters and relationship dynamics. furthermore, the show-louis is also very different in terms of morality and self-awareness. because the show was pretty much "scared" to portray a slaver on screen, they chose to depict a louis who is already quite horrible from the get-go to "offset" the fact that they totally copped out on book louis.
one of the bad choices they made on the show is to paint lestat as a champion against slaver mentality. the fact is, at the time he met louis in the book, part of the reason why he chose louis is because he needed louis resources and human connections in order to keep up appearances among the humans. lestat WANTED to keep living a certain kind of lifestyle, and much like his entitlement to murder, lestat felt it only natural to take advantage of the kind of resources that louis had at the time. and it totally backfired when louis' torment about being a vampire boiled into the event of razing his own home and admitting to his slaves that yes he is indeed the devil.
I don't think Lestat is an abolitionist champion, or whatever. It seems, from episode 1 at least, that he doesn't care AT ALL about that. He's simply saying what he needs to say in order to lure Louis.

i doubt that. book lestat fed off slaves and chose a slaver for his immortal companion. the showrunner of this show said that they don't want to show a slaver in their series. it goes against their own narrative if lestat isn't against slavery.
@@maggyfrog i get where you're coming from, but I find the book character of Louis to be extremely boring. In his 200 years, what has he done? For a vampire questioning the existence and purpose of it all, he is incredibly one dimensional. In future books, he lives in a raggedy rat infested home, wearing moth ridden clothes as he reads by candlelight. Hardly the type of character to carry on a TV series. Especially if you want to attract ppl who didn't like the book or have never read it. What made Louis interesting was his interactions with larger than life characters in Lestat, Claudia and then Armand. So, the changes made, I feel can help carry his character when inevitably, Lestat is no longer in the picture and it's just him and Claudia. And Lestat is no saint, by any means, he does know right from wrong. Why he did hunt the evil doer in the book like the two whores Louis thought were innocent. They were murderers and thieves and that's why Lestat took pleasure in killing them.

this show is supposed to focus on LESTAT. it's what anne rice always wanted. a pure adaptation of the books, but she wanted season 1 to start with book 2 and that when he meets louis, it would be on lestat's POV.
the mistake of this show is making louis the main character in the first place. they feel the need to get those woke points and so now we have a radically changed louis and bizarrely the main character of the vampire chronicles.
with lestat as the correct main character, by the time we meet louis in season 2 or so (as that's what anne originally wanted), all that brooding and angst from louis would now make more sense when told in the perspective of lestat whom louis is totally misunderstanding. this is going to explain why they didn't reconnect until much later in the books because vampires are not supposed to change while the world changes. louis being that eternal "woe-is-me" guy is the counterpoint to lestat who is forever this gleeful adventurous passionate one.
Having wives and kids doesn't mean he's been straight-washed. "What he had to do" could mean extra sketchy shite. That's how I took it.
yeah, if anything I that he had failed marriages is parallel to Louis trying to hold on this straight role to society knowing deep down that he isn't hiding it well.

Your style and presentation were great!! How the producers could claim their version was more faithful to the book than the 1990s movie is beyond me. That lie was a hype to fool people into watching their production. I am very familiar with The Vampire Chronicles and especially "Interview" after reading them many times. I watched the AMC trailer and was appalled. I turned to you for clarity and I'm so glad I did. My desire to watch this monstrosity has evaporated. Thank you for the heads up!!

Many thanks to the RUclips algorithm for leading me to your earlier trailer break-down only a couple of days ago, because otherwise I wouldn't have known of this show. :) I just watched the first episode and honestly loved it! Maybe it's because my Anne Rice phase ended with highschool 20 years ago, so I'm not particularly married to the story. I won't blame any die-hard fan for not feeling the same, though, considering that I had to bow out of The Rings or Power because I couldn't reconcile it with my love for Tolkien's world. In any case, I can't wait for the rest of the show - and for your reactions!
I think the puzzle at the beginning of the episode is a « clue » that Memnoch is unseen for now but that he’s around . I think that painting is mention in the book .
I have read the books and loved them, including the books about the Mayfair witches. I was initially on the fence about this adaptation. After watching the first episode, I love it. I love the changes that they made. They had to make changes since Louis is a black man. I'm looking forward to watching more of the series.
I interpreted Lestat's mention of the "savage garden" very differently than you did. We, as in the viewers, know that Lestat is a vampire. When Lestat mentions the "savage garden" I did not take it as him speaking of the natural world. He was speaking of the vampire world. Hence, the drink up, you're going to need that shot. After all, we know the entire time Lestat is slowly seducing Louis, his prey.
The scene with Louis and Daniel discussing their sexuality was still rich even though Daniel denied being gay. Daniel can say he was only in the gay bar to score drugs but we know that's not true because Louis knew it for what it was. Like straight people can't score drugs in straight bars (let me insert my eyeroll here). Remember, a man can live a straight lifestyle and still love to have sex with men. It's just that society must identify the behavior to categorize it somehow.
I believe Daniel isn't straight, he's lying and keeping Louis at an arm's length.
I don't think Lestat stops time, I think he goes terribly fast, when it comes to the scene in the church, and that in the other scene he's just charmed the hell out of the poker players to the point in which they were just hypnotized by him and thus not moving/thinking/noticing anything he didn't want them too. I might be imagining that, though. If he were a V:tM character, I'd assume he has Presence 4, Auspex 4, some Celerity, some Potence and some Fortitude. A Toreador with some physical side-disciplines.
:/ i've only managed to get halfway through the video, but i don't think i'll continue! much praise to your reviewing style, but, having grown up reading my mother's old beat up paperback rice novels (from an age far too young to be reading them) and now watching this as a 24 year old queer man, all i have for the show is a fond delight! all the things about the book that people want so badly to adhere to always seem to be the bits that the adaptation has IMPROVED, in my opinion. anne rice oversaw the production of the show, at least in part, as well as her son, and if she liked what she saw, all i can think is that it can't be nearly so bad as people complain about! i'll finish my reread of the books, i think, and then give this series a binge. thank you for convincing me!

I had my doubts about this series but I watching the first episode and I really enjoy the casting… I guess I’ll give it a chance although it’s not the adaptation I would like to see. Fan of the books but I’m going to try and put my knowledge of the books to the side and see what the series is about, still a bit on the fence but let’s do this.

I'm happy for the changes (except all the blood, much more a fan of the refined vampire). The movie was a masterpiece and did an amazing job adapting it. I don't need nor want just a movie stretched out. Fans are always calling for new and original ideas, and here it is.
I liked the premier episode. Since I was aware of the major changes, I was primed to see what other changes they would decide to make. Based on the new themes they're trying to get across, those changes make sense. If people let go of thinking of the series as an "adaptation" and instead think of it as a "reimagining", they'll enjoy it better.

And it makes sense[ to me] that it would be, since Anne Rice's whole thing with the books was kind of always towing these meta!lines, framing it as if these stories could be really happening or could really have-happened during then-modern times.
And considering the way Anne Rice herself also tended to evolve things, throughout the books, herself(like Lestat from book 1 to book 2-or Lestat/Louis being read as a queer couple supposedly being originally unintended but then later on being 100% fully embraced and canon-ized by her pretty entirely)....I don't think it's that terribly out-of-character or that far beyond canon-reach/belief either.
Plus, the biggest changes are Louis..and Claudia. And there's no way in heck that Claudia could be as young as she is in the books for this tv series to fly, and some changes to accommodate that change would be inevitable. And, modernizing the timeline, it makes sense that Louis' family/career situation would have also shifted slightly with the times just like it does in this series-even if he had still been white; and making him not-white, is probably a giant nod to Anne Rice's [standalone/not Vampire Chronicles series ]historical-fiction novel 'The Feast of All Saints'(specifically about the Free coloured peoples of New Orleans), too. ((Kinda like how the series also gives lots of nods to other popular monster movie & vampire cinema in general, too-like to the glasses worn by Gary Oldman in the 1990s Dracula movie. Honestly, this adaptation has me in Vampire & Anne Rice nerd heaven! But maybe that's just me. idkk ^^)) ... And let's not forget that Anne Rice herself once wrote a screenplay in which Louis &/or Lestat were actually genderbent or trans or something too! 😅😹 Like, yes, she wanted an adaptation that was more faithful to her own personal vision to be made-but sometimes I think her own personal vision was not nearly as completely inflexible as some people tend to think, especially not as time went on and she /grew/matured as a person. But what do I know really, I suppose. 🙂

Anyway thanks for the vid. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode so far. It's been so long since I've read the 1st 3 books so it is fascinating to hear what was different from the original.
I've been a huge fan of the Vampire Chronicles and all of Anne's work. For a first episode I liked it. I know it's different, but there was such a change from Interview to Vampire Lestat in the books that I wasn't phased by the changes. We'll see how the next episodes go. My hope is that this goes on past season 1 and we get to see more of the stories from the later books.

I think Lestat is responsible for Paul's death on some level, maybe when Paul pissed him off Lestat told Paul to commit suicide in some petty anger or he caused Paul's death knowing it would send Louis in a downward spiral making it easier for Lestat to lure Louis deeper back to him to be his , or maybe unknowingly Lestat caused Paul's death like when Lestat got into Paul's head to cuss him out Lestat mind powers messed with Paul's already fractured mind to the point of no return causing Paul to commit suicide that way , I'm sure I'm most likely wrong about any of this but this just some theories I got

I've only read the first 2 books. One thing I remember is that I never really liked book Louis. On the show I tho I definitely love what they're doing with Louis's character and how they enter woven race to his story. I overall loved this first episode and it honestly one of the best pilots I have watched this year. I'm excited to see what they do with the rest of the episodes.

I haven’t read the books in a long time and after seeing where the show was going I decided a reread would probably set me up for not liking the series’s approach and postponed it, but it’s great to have a discussion like this (especially from someone so well versed in the book lore) to help contextualize the changes, especially those made in the details of the various themes and motifs.
Like you I’ll need the whole season first to decide exactly where I stand, but the first episode very intriguing.

The movie had them awake during the day too. I didn't think it's the gun. I think it's to avoid problems in future. (Like getting stuck somewhere at 4:30 am with someone not in the know who might call an ambulance cause their companion suddenly collapsed and they won't wake up.)

I don't think Daniel was made straight, but it's actually in denial, 'cause for him "playing straight" would "clean up his act" too, but let's see ~~~
I gotta say I was veeery sceptical of this adaptation when I heard about all the changes. Especially the part where Daniel was "high" during the first interview (it seemed disrespectful of original material), but I was SO WRONG. They handled it very nicely. I expected to be disappointed and now I'm in love.

I definitely interpret Lestat's "time-stopping" as some epic combination of his psychic and/or telekinetic abilities, mesmerizing or transfixing people in place[ &/OR telekinetically holding the people frozen in place]-in combination with his ability to move super fast & speak into people's minds(kind of blurring together indecipherably to human perceptions), rather than actually freezing time or the whole entire world; and it makes sense that Louis can't explain it more specifically in his interview, if Lestat truly never did explain exactly what was or wasn't happening then to Louis either. I don't feel like that possibility is actually at all outside the bounds of Vampire Chronicles lore, myself; but perhaps that's just me.
And I don't think Lestat ever shared so much detail from his past that it left absolutely nothing kept to himself-so I really didn't mind that either. ^^
I love the reference to Nikki. And I didn't actually feel like he was copping to the fact that it was an ex-boyfriend-I felt like he was in fact actually trying to downplay it, as if it was nothing, much less than it actually was at very least...which I think works. I love the way that Lestat is constantly referencing things, and yet never actually explaining any of it in any actual detail or specificity.
Similar thing with the Savage Garden reference-Lestat is constantly saying things that seem to be about one thing, and yet are actually[ to him] about completely other things entirely. (Like when he says the new fever in town is caused by rats, 'of the six-foot variety' ..and clearly talking about himself.) Plus, people around him never know when he's actually saying something tongue-in-cheek and untrue, or actually not. (Or maybe it's not even meaning to Lestat yet what it will come to mean to him later on, just a coincidental turn-of-phrase or the beginning roots not quite fully grown. Who knows; at least, not without picking the showrunner's and/or writers' minds directly! I feel it's much too early to say, on that, either way.)
I also interpreted Daniel trying to excuse any same-sex activity he may have had while high as being "the drugs"..not him. Similar to how Louis also excused his past same-sex dalliances or whatever he called them as just fooling around and not reflective of his actual sexual orientation at first too. I felt like Louis is sort of stepping into Lestat's role here, while Daniel is stepping into Louis' role, at least with regards to their sexualities. I didn’t see it as straight-washing, at all; just..a refusal to cop to it, or to his ability to relate to Louis, at all. Maybe not even in general, and possibly just with Louis-because he doesn't trust Louis, having almost been killed by him once before, and desperately trying to maintain some element of control or upperhand in a situation where he knows Louis has vastly more power than he does. But, again, I dunno; Maybe that was just me.
I actually think that Lestat is capable of drinking without making a mess, I think we do actually see far less messy instances on-screen sometimes too(like when he gives Louis the Little Drink)...but I think sometimes he just gets in a mood, and then it's more about killing or making a statement than actually drinking. (And, with Louis, well Louis' just inexperienced at it at first.) But maybe I'm just being too lenient or generous and optimistic there, idek.
I think that Lestat's opinion of an "evildoer" and our own human definition(s) of an evildoer is not entirely exactly or perfectly aligned. I think, perhaps, Lestat considers anyone participating in shaming Louis in any way for literally anything to be doing evil..to Louis. (Plus, why wouldn't Lestat unreliably depict himself more favorably, JUST like a still-bitter Louis might unreliably depict Lestat much _less_ favorably? .)
This adaptation strongly reminds me of Bryan Fuller's adaptation of The Red Dragon into the show Hannibal; i've already seen quite a bit of comparison between iwtv and hannibal but what i mean is purely in the method of adaptation.
So ignoring ALL of the story and character similarities (of which there is a TON), Hannibal's tv adaptation has many main characters genderbent and racebent, other characters roles and personalities completely altered. It was set in (then) modern day. The main 2 characters relationship quickly evolves FAR beyond the original by miles- Will's character even absorbes Clarice Starlings roll from the book and she never even exists in the show.
Anyway i digress- Hannibal has since been considered fanfiction of the original book, we all love it but nobody is reading the book alongside the series, they are two completely different things really. Exactly how Mad max fury road exists separately from the original Mad max movies, to give another example.
This AMC show seems to me to be in the exact same boat, like this is fanfiction of Interview with the vampire (which is a funny statement with the history of iwtv and fanfic lol). I was really upset with the changes all the way up until the flashback started and i was completely over it, the book is still there- the '94 film is still there.
To me this is just somebodies beautifully crafted AU fanfiction.

I just reread the books and in the vampire lestat he kinda goes a bit off the rails bit until he is attacked by Louis and claudia. I mean he did kill an mother and her baby in an church. He goes back to only killing the guilty when he raises in the 80's

If viewers who are of the fandom keep an open mind that this is an adaptation then all that matters are the writing and acting. Are both good enough to have a very good series? I think the series is off to a good start.

OMG I just remembered that I used to watch you. I think I used to have a different RUclips account and then I deleted it. It's so weird to remember and watch your channel after all those years.
Perhaps the show writers read somewhere that vampires are addiction metaphors and decided the smoking is a visual representation of that.
I went into the episode expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. I was pleasantly surprised & delighted. I'm not as knowledgeable on the intricacies of the novels, but I like them very much (more of a Mayfair fan). I think the series creators has to be a bit more literal with Rice's themes as to not isolate a new audience. But as a casual fan, I had a blast watching this.
Seen episodes 1 & 2 now and liked them both a fair bit. It's an intruiging take on the books even if it doesn't entirely work for me. But there is much more I like than dislike. The cast are all very good and it sure is beautifully produced. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I'll say one thing "positive" about the blood spilling vs the no mess from the books. (Not just saying this because I like messy vampires 😅)
It could be used as a good visual queue of overwhelming emotions. i.e: lestats anger at Louis priest confession. Or of extreme hunger.
Understanbly, yeah under most circumstances you wouldn't want to always make a mess, it's wasteful but as a human have you ever been so hungry that you've accidentally made a horrible mess? Especially if not killing the person you drink from is difficult, is part of canon.
I cant imagine if anger or hunger is thrown in the mix it always be a clean kill. ( also thinking of the Don't bite at the blood qoute)
The thing with Lestat only killing those deserving-I wonder if further down the line we’ll get some sort of flashback to indicate that Lily and the priests were more sinister than Louis was aware of in his telling. In the books, Lestat eventually reveals that the prostitutes he killed-cruelly, from Louis’s perspective-were regularly robbing and murdering their clients. And later in the show, Lestat remarks that nobody cares much if priests go missing-“kid-fiddlers most likely”-it makes me think he knows something about the priests at Louis’s church. I could be expecting too much, though.
I'm pretty sure that Lestat isn't stopping time. I believe this is an extension of his mind reading powers. It's more like Louie is perceiving time as having been stopped.
I found myself enjoying the episode more than I expected to, and thank you for this review. I feel like they could have turned Daniel, and perhaps Louis into original characters for a stronger sense of story, but other than that, I thought Lestat was quite close to the book (not entirely, but quite). And I would LOOOOVE to hear your theories about Rashid...

Lestat first drank from Akasha before he met Louis while he was living with Marius so him having abnormal abilities from other vampires his age tracks.
He was definitely stronger and more resilient than other vampires for his age, but he did not get the extra powers (telekinesis, flight, astral projection, the fire gift, etc) until 1985 when he exchanged a WHOLE lot more blood with Akasha. The show giving him the powers early is similar to what the movie did (along with them being awake during the day) and it's interesting that the show is taking (non-canon) ideas from the movie, when their whole sales pitch was that they were going to be more true to the books than the movie, and fix all the things the movie got "wrong."
It's already been renewed for season 2!!!! I am losing my mind!
I don’t think Lestat can literally stop time. I had the impression that he was communicating thoughts to Louis at speeds that are normally impossible when speaking physically, i.e telepathy is quicker than a normal conversation. Mind you I’ve only seen the first ep, so I could be dead wrong.
