I may be missing something but I can see no indication of which model is being played in each playing example. I do know I prefer the sound of the 2nd one, though.
That's a great question! Yamaha went through a research and development process starting in 1990 and ending roughly in 2010. This is when they designed their flagship concert grand piano, the CFX. That being said, Yamaha has continued to research and refine their pianos to this day... It's not like they stopped in 2010. However, Yamaha took what they learned during that process and applied everything they learned to their grand pianos, baby grand pianos, and acoustic upright pianos like the U1. The exact and technician details that are different are tough to explain. This is because Yamaha does not provide a lot of technical information because they need to protect their engineering and designs from being stolen. In broad strokes, the materials they source, dozens of small details that individually don't add up to a difference in sound but in total make all the difference is what they changed. This has to do with the shape of the hammers, how the bass strings are wound, how the ribs on the soundboard tie into the frame of the piano, what type of Spruce is chosen for the soundboard, and the list continues on. If you have more questions I will be happy to help you! You can feel welcome to text or call me at my cell phone number to talk about pianos or email me as well! If you are looking to purchase a U1, we have U1 models in stock. We would be honored to work with you! Cell: 701-370-0872 email: josh@popplersmusic.com Thank you and have a GREAT day! - Josh
Scale design doesn’t mean “how the pianos are designed and crafted”. It means the string lengths and gauges. Bring 120lbs lighter, the B3 probably has worse tuning stability and weaker clarity of projection.
B3 is actually heavier than U1. According to Yamaha's website, B3 weighs 522 lbs, and U1 weighs 502 lbs. The weight described for B3 in this video is the weight of B1.
Your video is great but why didn't you capture your playing correctly! that puts off all the efforts! anyways U1 sounds better to me! I am getting one soon

What's the actual difference between a 1980 U1 and a 2023 U1? Is there any new improvement?
That's a great question!
