I'm in the same boat with you right now. I picked up a C5 ZO6 a month ago with the same issue. Previous owner blew up the motor and I was able to get the car for a steal. The valve spring broke, which is common on the LS6. Completely took out piston number one, valve, and a hole through the block. I was able to source a low mileage long block and in the middle of currently putting everything together. Good luck with yours!
It’s not the valve, it’s the valve guide and valve seat that weren’t machined concentric to each other. Linamar Corporation machined the heads for GM and their(GM’s) quality control didn’t catch it or overlooked the problem. Valve heads don’t fall off just because they have a hollow stem. They break off from contact with the piston, over-rev/valve float, or in this instance poorly machined valve seats that fatigue the valve stem.
@@natez0690 100% correct. That's the LS7 valving issue that these are known for. Though, most of the time, they only kiss the piston after the valve works its way to the point of contact. This one looks like it took the valve and decided to play dodge ball with the rods and crank at, or around, 7k rpm. That's a lot of energy transfer if things aren't working smoothly.
I had an ‘07 ZO6, LS7. Chevrolet replaced the heads under warranty before that kind of damage could occur. I kept the warranty on the car until I sold it in 2018. Expensive, but it didn’t fail on my dime. Good video, thank you.

My money is on the "drysump"-system. It's well known that the stock system can't keep up with high Gs on the track, especially with (Semi-)Slicks. On the early engines especially, it's a problem with the scavenge stage of the oil pump. This results in aerated oil. The scavange-stage simply can't keep up with the pressure side. This is why they superseded the pump to the LS9 which moved a little more oil. Greetings from Germany! EDIT: Ok. After seeing the crank, my best bet is now the exhaust valve =D.
Great video, but damn, now I'm freaked out about the motor in my Z06. I gotta spend some bucks to avoid spending bigger bucks. Oh yeah, nice garage too.
Been considering buyin a 2006 z06 for auto crossing. Wasn't aware of the valve "issue" that was mentioned here I'll have to research that a bit. Sub'd to watch the build.
Don't let the hype scare you. The c6 z06 is a monster on the street, track or drag strip. Even being 17 years old now. Buy one, keep an eye on the heads/maintain them, and you'll won't regret it.
The same thing happened to my 09 z06 and the same cylinder. The exhaust valve snapped and destroyed the engine. I got a Texas speed 5.3 aluminum bored and bumped back up to 7.0 and sleeved with forged pistons. I kept the rods though. Heads got bronze guides and steel valves, so I've been good so far, no issues.
I am grateful for the answer, so the theory is confirmed that most people write the same interval of 36k-40 miles, after replacing the valve guides with more durable valve springs, it should be ok?@@DIYeverything513
Previous owner revved that LS7 to the moon causing it to nuke. Anyway to download the computer and see how high the engine was reviving to right before it let go?
I had the ZO6 back in 2009 , they were badass cars, and around 2010 the valves were dropping out of them, it was a big deal.. it required a full cylinder head rebuild and if you didn't do it this is what happens.
Dry sump motor there - never should have happened. Over rev or missed a shift? Agree 100% throw out. I tracked my 08 C6 once but put 20/50 in it.... ran great at 235F all day... I had the Heads changed so no guide issues. Cool video

EDIT: Ok. After seeing the crank, my best bet is now the exhaust valve =D.
Yeah... that will buff right out!
Great work and great video.
Great video, but damn, now I'm freaked out about the motor in my Z06. I gotta spend some bucks to avoid spending bigger bucks. Oh yeah, nice garage too.
Holy Shit! Nice job Greg! 😂
nice work, thanks for the video. subscribed
Excellent content dude. Hilarious. That LS7 is smoked
Hello, at what mileage did the valves fail? 2009?
@@leksldje3085 failed at 36k miles
I am grateful for the answer, so the theory is confirmed that most people write the same interval of 36k-40 miles, after replacing the valve guides with more durable valve springs, it should be ok?@@DIYeverything513
Previous owner revved that LS7 to the moon causing it to nuke. Anyway to download the computer and see how high the engine was reviving to right before it let go?
No.
Revs, they fixed the valves and heads in the first year of production..
Soon as you pull the TB an see rings you know complete new everything
The damage to the cylinder liner explains why they went back to the ls3 block, and made improvements when they decided to put boost on the ZR1.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
I'm sure if Greg saw this, he's like damn that's my motor. lol
I had the ZO6 back in 2009 , they were badass cars, and around 2010 the valves were dropping out of them, it was a big deal.. it required a full cylinder head rebuild and if you didn't do it this is what happens.
..are there any years (C6 Z06)that this wasn't a problem? 😮😮
Imagine the boom when it let go. That much damage, it had to be loud
Man that hole in the block. Insane.
Nothing wrong with the engine, resleeve and GO!!
Been waiting on this!!!!! 👊🏽🔥👊🏽🔥👊🏽🔥👊🏽🔥
youre in a good spot! now you can build your own motor up.
I’ve never seen a engine so mangled, shiieeettt😳
Link to the basin for oil drip on the engine stand? Thank you in advance
Greg Jones.... the great engine builder
Dry sump motor there - never should have happened. Over rev or missed a shift? Agree 100% throw out. I tracked my 08 C6 once but put 20/50 in it.... ran great at 235F all day... I had the Heads changed so no guide issues. Cool video
