Love how everyone says all Nye said was "haha virgin", but ignore that he called out Newton for drinking mercury, sticking a needle in his own eye, and becoming a Minter because he lost his mind. Underrated verse
@@toker6664 Don't see what that has to do with a rap battle. Keep it relevant, yes? ERB rappers rap about eachother's lives, but that doesn't mean they instantly win if their raps are shitty, just because they were more accomplished in real life.
Isaac newton literally invented calculus to track the stars and celestial bodies themselves because math of his time wasnt advanced enough for him. Nye is intelligent, but newton is probably one of the absolute most intelligent people to ever exist🤷
For those wondering: The integral equation at 1:31 is actually valid and the answer is correct. But there are 4 solutions: ±1 and ±i. Neil could have answered 1 or even -1, but went on with i to rhyme words and be cooler. They even show it at 1:46 when he slowly pulls up the line (1) and puts a dot above (i) . This is a way to show that he thinks of answering 1 but goes on with i ERB is the GOAT hip hop RUclips channel, hence proved.
He didn't have time for a nagging wife when he's busy discovering the most important aspects of the laws of nature. As for their attacks on his hobby of alchemy, psht, all it really is is highly experimental chemistry. Bill and Neil were acting like he was shaking a stick at stuff and saying gibberish.
@@TheOpalHammer Robert Boyle was credited as the first modern chemist, and he was alive during the time of Newton. Astrology was based on bullshit and emotional appeals and fanciful thinking. Alchemy is a precursor and major contributor to what we know of chemistry. And don't be daft; contrary to popular belief alchemy isn't ONLY concerned with turning lead into gold or making immortality potions.
@@TheOpalHammer Alchemy was in fact simply chemistry, before chemistry was known as it is. The difference between the two is that they got a lot wrong with Alchemy, severely and fundamentally wrong. That said, a lot of what we know in chemistry today traces it's origins to the study of alchemy. @Fireflux the reason he attacked his social relationships is because while Newton was extremely smart, he was also bat-shit crazy. Not eccentric, CRAZY. He did some strange and bizarre things that even people back then knew were messed up and weird. Attacking his character is a direct attack on his accomplishments.
It wasn't accidental. Bill Nye is a great guy, and a decent scientist, but compared to people like Newton he couldn't hold a candle in the science department. There is a reason why Newton is considered one of the most important figures in Physics, and it wasn't because he went coo-coo for cocoa puffs.
1:17 - For those interested in physics and dimensions, if you didn't notice it already, you'll appreciate this line particularly: "I accelerated the mind of mankind to a higher plane of understanding and I can calculate the weight and the size and the shape of the shadow of the mind you're standing in." When Carl Sagan was explaining higher planes of existence to laymen, he used his famous "Flatlanders" story to get the point across. He held a cube in front of a light so that it cast a shadow. As he rotated the cube in various positions, it's shape remained a cube but the shadow it cast changed. This showed that trying to calculate the weight and the size and the shape of an object in a higher plane just from its *SHADOW* is impossible. So Newton is bragging that he can do the impossible through an apparent veiled reference to that Flatlanders story. Not only is it an amazing line, but it once again showcases the brilliant minds behind ERB.
"Why don't you pick on a brain your own size" is either a hilarious diss against Nye, or a self-criticism by Tyson, either way, is unintentionally one of the funniest lines in ERB history
This is just as amazing now, as it was back in 2014. Almost a decade ago when I was in College. So much has changed since then. Bruhh all the bitter sweet memories rushing back.
My physics teacher: "Okay, who knows Newton's 3rd Law?" Me: "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction--" My physics teacher: "Very good--" Me: "Except for when we both start RAPPING!"
@@phoebeclark4718 This line is so weird to me though. Like whenever I think about it I think they got it wrong. Every action has an opposite and equal reaction. So with this line, if Newton was an amazing rapper that means bill is equally great at being bad at rapping hence being opposite of Newton. So when he says except when we rap he basically takes away the punch.
@@noone-xz4nt Nah bro, you misunderstand. The law is "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.". So if Newton raps good against Neil he should get and equal good rap from Neil, but then he says "except for when we both start rapping", meaning, Neil cannot rap against him at all.
"Hiding up inside his attic on some Harry Potter business" is a reference to Newton spending the later part of his life studying alchemy looking for the philosopher stone.
Pretty odd for Newton to talk about "wasting time with creationists" when he in fact believed in the Creation account of the Bible, and agreed with his contemporary Archbishop Ussher that the world was only thousands of years old.
@@rogericafort To be fair he said "wasting time DEBATING creationists". If anything that would put Isaac in favor of creationists, but really that line implied neither. Rather he's saying that it wasted time because it accomplished nothing.

+THEGREATMAX and when he said: every action has an equal or opposite reaction, except for when we both start rapping. Bill Nye got owned completely with that line.
Winner of course is ERB for getting Weird Al Yankovich to play as Sir Isaac Newton. I had the pleasure of shaking his hand when I was in the military. He is crazy tall. I am a tall guy, however when I shook his hand his hand engulfed mine easily. It was when Alpocylipse was released. I commented on how I loved how he dogged Lady Gaga in his "Perform This Way" song. He smiled like he won a million bucks and shook my hand. He signed my album sheet
I must say that due to my luck of meeting my favorite celebrities (most of them died, Michael Jackson, Stan Lee, Robin Williams, Cameron Boyce, Patrick Swayze, Steve Irwin) I must say that you got severely lucky. I always wish I could meet Weird Al but due to my epilepsy - and thus zero chance at joining the military - I mainly don't have much of a chance.
I think King vs Poe is easily on par. I'm not sure which of the two is lyrically superior, but that one should definitely be in contention with gems like "Poe's poems pwn posers" and "I'm the author with the blood and gore lore galore that'll horrify the reader to the core."
Check out Joker vs. Pennywise for crazy layer-upon-layer of meaning in the lyrics. That one is ERB's magnum opus imo. But this one is still tops for sheer epic white and nerdiness.
@@sydssolanumsamsys Smart? No, I guess not. But haughty, arrogant, dismissive and snide? Check, check, check and....check! It's too bad. He built himself such a platform in the public consciousness. He gets to spend his capital however he sees fit, of course. Just sucks to see formerly fierce lions get demented in their long teeth :(
The verse "I rap like a sharp needle in your eye" in 1:04 is actually a reference to Newton's childhood where he *literally stuck a needle between his eye and eyelid* to explore what was behind.
He did that because he was trying to explain colors (though he came to the wrongful conclusion that color were caused by different intensities of light particles hitting the eye)
You've got to appreciate Newton's last verse, they had to be able to rap, with multiple rhymes, a math equation that actually was mathematically correct. Also Yankovic does it at insane speed...
Newton: “The Intergral sec y/dy from 0 to 1/6th of Pi is log of base e times the squareroot of 3 times the 64th power of WHAT?” Neil: it’s i. Sadly the concept of i dosent exist yet during your time.
I wouldn't call the math equation, or at least the answer, truly mathematically correct. Any answer of the form exp(2*Pi*k*i/64) where k = 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 63 (IE: The 64 roots of unity) is a correct answer. This includes numbers like "i", "1", "-1," and "-i" as well as whats inbetween them. So that's 64 answers, not just "i". Actually the whole question is weird because "x^64" is just "1" in this case. So it like, you can raise it to whatever power you want and you'll get a different set of answers. You can raise the hidden variable to the power of infinity and get infinite possible answers. It's just a weirdly framed question.
If I remember correctly, Weird Al has an insane verbal IQ. Just check his songs... Some of them are literally copying the singing of some of the biggest talents of our time (Michael Jackson and such). He is a genius that only exists once every 10,000 years in terms of verbal and rhetoric.
Wierd Al has been parody rapping since the late 70s. I love all his work and acknowledge his next level skill as a true virtuoso musician. Even with saying all that, it takes a truly revolutionary mind to rap as fast as he did while still asking a legit physics question. I mean...how in the actual &@#K do you rhyhme that crap!? LOL
He didn't explain calculus, nor was the answer (i) correct. It's just plus or minus 1, where i ignores the former (therefore wrong) He just spat out an equation. If I told you "the partial derivative of 3x^2-ln(4)" would you say I explained calculus? Would you feel prepared to ace a test?
@@Andy_M.S.c The equation presented is true when x^64 is equal to 1. i and negative i both work as answers in addition to 1 and -1, not to mention the 60 other roots that have to exist.
Wierd AL has a policy to keep his works as clean as possible. This line picks on the entirety of the Epic series. Most have every disgusting word they can think of.
Y’know, speaking of Weird Al, a good rap battle would be Weird Al vs Lin Manuel Miranda. They’re actually friends, so I feel like they’d find it hilarious.
It helps that the equation in question is not only real, but was calculated so as to be spoken as a limerick. Newton basically flexed on everybody by using math to write poetry.
@@theepicone1264 No, it's a valid solution. In fact, the left side is _exactly_ equal to the natural log of the square root of 3; multiplying it by _i_ to the sixty-fourth power doesn't change anything. _The integral sec y dy_ _From zero to one sixth of pi_ _Is log to base e_ _Of the square root of three_ _Times the sixty-fouth power of i_
"I accelerated the mind of mankind to a higher plane of understand and I can calculate the weight and the size and the shape of the shadow of the mind you are standing in" Is basically ERBs greatest ever line. Utterly destroyed.
There are a million million million million million particles in the universe that we can observe; your mama took the ugly ones and put them into one nerd.
I like how when multiple people show up in a rap battle they normally turn into a free for all, but in this case it was Neil actually backing up Bill Nye. Because they knew they needed at least two people to even have a shadow of a chance against Isaac Newton. And Newton still won.
Yeah tbf this was a good rap but in no way fair at all. Like , Isaac Newton , the guy whos work modern physics and maths are based upon , debating a teacher?
@Adam Janssen definitely wrong. You couldn't be more wrong in your entire life. In fact I felt second hand embarrassment just by how wrong this was... bud
AceTheGreat I'm talking about-- The people in that video ARE the real Bill Nye, and the real Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Don't you know what they look like? This is one of the few (if not only) ERB's where the characters are played by who they are based on. Don't take my word for it, Look it up.
A skill of Weird Al's that has amazed me since the 80s is how you can hear clearly each word he says no matter how fast he talks, raps or sings. Might not completely understand everything he says but you still hear it clearly. Might be why he had to gargle and sing with marbles in his mouth when parodying Nirvana.
I saw a reaction to this battle 4 years ago, and the person reacting said that just because of Weird Al being in the video, the battle was over even before it even started! But I do have to give it to Neil deGrasse Tyson for sticking up for Bill Nye! Just an awesome battle all around, it's always a classic! :)
sithalo I'm pretty sure the writers of Star Trek just totally bullshitted the entire thing you know. I doubt there is any actual logic behind it given how long ago it was made.
Samantha S well theres some logic to it. spacey scifi logic but still more logic than just having the creators say space magic and leave it at that lol. and even with no logic behind it they explain somewhat how it functions so its odd that he wouldnt know how it works. seen video with scientist talking about traveling to other stars and he described the Star Trek Warp Drive as if it folded space to just bridge the gap.
Centrist Shenanigans there is a simpler version of newtons third law "if A exerts a force on B then B will exert an equal but opposite reaction force on A" A and B are newtons pairs for example if you jump on a trampoline youre exerting a downward force (weight) on the trampoline and the trampoline exerts an equal in size but opposite in direction force on you so in that scenario you would be "A" and the trampoline would be "B"
Giving this one to Newton for two reasons: First, because he didn't repeat the same burn three times in one verse. And second, because he didn't need to call in backup.
ConnellxSilverfur I wholeheartedly agree. Newton's burns were scientific in nature. and Bill Nye's entire career revolves around science. Bill's burns relied mostly on mocking Newton's social status, which is sort of irrelevant when it comes to... oh I don't know... REVOLUTIONISING THE WORLD OF PHYSICS.
This is like my 10th time watching this and only recently did I notice that the Neil here isn't the real Neil.... I thought it was for a really long as time cuz it seemed like something he would really do tbh...
That's silly as a mesure of comparison in a rap battle. Nye inspired a lot of children to go into STEM. He is like the cool middleschool teacher: Sure, he may never be the scientist Newton was, but he was the inspiration for citizen scientists and researchers. inspiring a couple generations to see science as cool and interesting has done more for society's advancement than any single researcher ever can. Newton did important work, I'd never disparige his efforts; but Nye inspired many scientists with similar potential to Newton. In my opinion, science educators and science "outreach people" like Nye do just as important a job as those of us doing the research.
Marquess Graye Could you explain me how that work then? I would have thought that the number of different answers is the number of elements of the set {exp(2kiPi/64)} with k from 0 to 63 - which is 64 -, but maybe you know things that I ignore.
Well... since i^2=-1 (by definition), then i^64=(i^2)^32=(-1)^32=1 (because -1^(2n)=1, where n is the natural number, obviously). So all answers of the set have to fullfill the requirement: x^64=1, where x is the answer. It is true, that situation creates 64 elements in theory, but it does not mean, that all of the 64 elements are elements with UNIQUE values (answers) for which equation x^64=1 is valid. Some of them can have the same value and thus overlap. I can think of x=1, x=-1 (since -1^(2n) is equivalent, when n=32), x =i, x = -i ( since (-i)^2 =i^2 anyway). That are only 4 answers. Maybe there are more, but definitely not 64.
I just love how offended Newton is that he has to battle Bill Nye. Understandable, of course, it's like a professional swordsman having to battle a toddler holding a wooden toy sword. Tyson is no match for him either, but not as much of an insult as Nye.
This video was published in 2014. If he had seen the ice cream orgy episode of bill nye saves the world, I think he would be rightfully far more offended that he has to battle him.
“I literally invented calculus and classical physics, and my opponent is a kid’s show host?” Honestly even Neil Tyson is no match for him. Newton is on the same level as Einstein and Hawking, and Tyson has nothing on them.
@@alessbritish228 Ok even Hawking admitted a lot of his work was built on Einstein's, so let's put him a tier below Einstein and Newton. However he did do a lot of groundbreaking research especially regarding time and black holes, so that still puts him above Tyson.

It wasn't accidental. Bill Nye is a great guy, and a decent scientist, but compared to people like Newton he couldn't hold a candle in the science department.

You've got to appreciate Newton's last verse, they had to be able to rap, with multiple rhymes, a math equation that actually was mathematically correct. Also Yankovic does it at insane speed...
Newton: “The Intergral sec y/dy from 0 to 1/6th of Pi is log of base e times the squareroot of 3 times the 64th power of WHAT?”
Neil: it’s i.

HOW DO YOU RAP A FCKN EQUATION???
* replays for 6 hours so i can memorize and remember the laws and formulas *
It's a pretty elementary calculus limerick- like highschool level.
And yet Neil Degrasse Tyson said the answer was i while there are actually 64 answers (the set of 64th roots of unity).
Eldor503 That's not how that works.Just because there are 64 roots of unity, doesn't mean there are 64 answers.

“I literally invented calculus and classical physics, and my opponent is a kid’s show host?”
Honestly even Neil Tyson is no match for him. Newton is on the same level as Einstein and Hawking, and Tyson has nothing on them.
@@ares_bluesteel How exactly is Hawking on the same level as Newton and Einstein? Bruh
@@alessbritish228 Ok even Hawking admitted a lot of his work was built on Einstein's, so let's put him a tier below Einstein and Newton. However he did do a lot of groundbreaking research especially regarding time and black holes, so that still puts him above Tyson.
Obviously Sir Newton won... but that "You wrote a book on gravity but you couldn't attract no body" was a killer line for Nye.
Ikr
Tritachion I love Newton soooooooooo much! 😍💗💋💋💋💋😄😂.
"your work on gravity was exemplary but your circle of friends was shoddy" oooH that one did hurt though...but Viva Sir I. Newton
No...stop...Neil won..
@@randomfilms876 noooooo, ISAAC WON! 😂😤
The line “I rap sharp like a needle in your eye” at 1:05 was a reference to the time newton put a needle in his eye to try to discover something about vision or somthing
_"Pick of a brain your own size"_
Did Tyson just low-key call Nye a brainlet? 😂
Yep
Maybe... P-brain?
@@thegamerdudeabides That's what Stephen Hawking called Albert Einstein
It was a pretty unfair fight. There's a reason that like the first thing Newton says is "you're putting me up against a guy with a Bachelor's degree?"
He is one. He makes lot's of dumb claims. Or explains stuff dishonestly. Neil is the real deal.
