Just wanted to say thank you for your reading videos. I fully believe that they are in fact transformative. As someone who started my journey into tolkien's works from this book that you're currently reading, it really does bring me back.
There was a lot of context that is provided from your insights, which really helps me understand the work and its overall plot line so much more. I used to play The Lord of the rings online before it got super micro transacting. And one of my favorite things to do was just sit amongst the community hearing all these like-minded souls talk about the deep lore and their theories about it.
But my knowledge of such lore stems from this book in particular. I had seen a little bit of the movies, knew who gandalf was but not his true nature. And when a friend of mine mentioned all the background lore behind everything, I got super invested. It's what got me to read tolkien's works and I started here.
Now as someone who is more versed in The lore than many of the people around me, I often am still confused more by the different accounts of the battles or of the journeys. I understand most l the Lore that surrounds the movies in particular.
And yet you're reading of The Hobbit prior really helped me understand what really formed the journey that Frodo is about to go on.
For some reason it never occurred to me set the wealth Bilbo has is from the dragon hoard.. I always just thought it was family money. But beyond that I've never read unfinished tales, mostly because it's unfinished nature confused me.. what was used, what was canon, what wasn't.. it isn't always clear.
So yeah, your insights in the chapters have given me a sense of reading the books again, this time as a more informed individual. That is true transformative media.
So again I am thankful for your chapter videos, and I am excited to continue reading through tolkien's works with you.

"It was a compliment- and therefore not true."
I can respect that kind of self-ownership.

You really nail the Gandalf voice. So like many of us in your orbit, I do LOTR every Autumn in some form. Last year it was Serkis' reading. This year, it's you! Looking forward to this. Thank you for your work.

John seamlessly shifts from frustrated & irritated Gandalf to compassionate & wise Gandalf to serious and urgent Gandalf like a pro! Looking forward to hearing his Gimli!

If you want lavish depictions of food, good plain food, as good as the Shire could show, you will find them in The Little House on the Prairie books. Those are what I remember from my childhood.

I can't believe the elves would allow smoking, even by Gandalf!
I think it's mentioned that dwarves smoke as well; did they also acquire the custom from the Hobbits?

Why did Tolkien choose the title “the Lord of the Rings”? Is it possible that the title is subtly referring to Frodo? Pippin calls Frodo “Lord of the Ring” in Many Meetings though Gandalf corrects him. Frodo often strikes me as a metaphor for Christ, who takes all the evil of the world onto himself and becomes the “King of Kings” by renouncing power and sacrificing himself. Frodo does in this way become Lord of the Rings, just not in the way that Sauron would understand it. It would be strange to name the book after Sauron, who is never portrayed as a character during the events of the book, and whose actions are only seen in their effects. The story is just not about him.

That is an interesting question. It's kind of hard to say the story is about any specific character. Although he is always "off screen" Sauron is the key player in all the events of the story. None of it would have happened if not for him, so his influence is felt even in the parts of the story that don't follow Frodo. Sauron's presence is also felt through the ring itself, so he's part of the journey in a more subtle way too. I think Tolkien probably wrote that exchange between Pippin and Gandalf as a way of addressing questions about the title, but I'd be interested to know if he had other titles in mind.
