- The history of this midwestern city is rooted in the river it sits on -and how it’s had to evolve with industry’s past and present...Oh, and also a very famous University that’s next door.
Established in 1865, South Bend saw a business boom in industry thanks to the St. Joseph River. Studebaker, Oliver Chilled Plow, and Singer Sewing machines were just a few of the big names. But we can’t forget the University of Notre Dame. It’s a huge influence on economy and culture in South Bend to this day.

It’s also where you will find five-time Emmy award-winning actor and host John McGivern. Enjoyed by a nationwide audience, John’s unique brand of storytelling is expanding across the Midwest.
Growing up in the Midwest in an Irish Catholic family, John’s own experiences and memories are relatable and remind us all of our shared Midwest heritage. Through lively interviews with local residents and civic leaders, John uncovers the uniqueness and charm of each community he visits.

I was born in South Bend. My grandfather was invited to teach at Notre Dame after WWII, which is how my mother's family emigrated to this country. My father worked at Ball Band as an engineer, then was transferred to New Jersey in 1967, at which time we left. Even though i can still find my way around town without a map, I can't help but think, this is so depressing. I'm glad I don't live there anymore. Downtown is a shell of its former self. I still remember when South Shore trains came all the way downtown, to the station at Michigan and LaSalle. And I remember when Union Station was still a train depot. Went to the movies at the Granada and State Theaters. Michigan St. is the main artery. It used to run straight through downtown. As a Catholic, I love ND. It's a special place and our family will be forever grateful.
I grew up during the same time you did. Respectfully, without the changes we most likely be a dead town. Note Dame would be the only thing keeping us on the map.
I'm eleven minutes in and this is already by far the best video on South Bend on RUclips. Detailed and intriguing and full of the old PBS travel show vibes.
I was born in South Bend and have lived here off and on my whole life. I learned so much from your video!
Can't thank you enough for your time and effort.
As a new resident of South Bend I learned so much from you thank you & I gotta share this with my family...
Wow we are proud of our city. Thank you
Relatives used to own Inwoods department store in the downtown area. Loved going to South Bend to visit.
We loved Inwoods.
love this city
I have been away for years! But love this video! I am a Floridian now, but I am a Hoosier forever
It's like traveling from the comfort of my chair.
I was born at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana in 1955. Graduated from ANDREW JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL in 1974. Played in the ANDREW JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL TIGER 🐅 BAND under the direction of Tom DeShone!
This is the greatest South Bend piece ever!!!
Go Irish!!!
Great to see this video. I was born and raised in the BEND! Always cool to see what it looks like now! I haven't been there since 2003.
Great video! I'm going to try to check out the Chocolate factory and the Studebaker Museum when I go up this weekend.
I love the magnificent bridges and shoreline walk along the St Joe River. Also the historical Morris Performing Arts Center.
GREAT JOB AS ALWAYS!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing! ❤ Jesimiel Millar Fernåndez
Super informative 👌 👍
Have so much family there ☺️☺️
i loved the part about the crime
Good place to live? Yay or nay? And why?
South Bend is a great city.
you are wrong old man
It has many opportunities however it is number 1 in indiana cities for the most crime. Gary is number 8. That’s a scary thought! If you don’t live anywhere near the hood then you should be ok. I will say a guy,53 was shot and found dead in an alley from a 20 something year old guy with road rage about a week ago. A few months ago there were 26 shots fired from my back yard at the house behind mine. I don’t even live in a bad neighborhood. The city has a lot of pleasant efforts made to improve the vibe, but they really messed up in indiana allowing people to carry guns without the need of permits. The city ordinance officers pick on people that don’t deserve it and turn a blind eye to really trashed out yards. I love southbend but the crime is ridiculous.
What a crock, smart streets, nothing downtown but a few restaurants, law firms and county/ city governments. County engineer said we need to slow traffic to keep people in city . ND wants to create their our “little city”. Roh’s vastly overrated, ate there more than once.
Didn't take me long to be reminded of why I left suck bend. The mindset of the people is to judge and scrutinize everything others say and do. The low vibration of the Catholic Way. They hate my weed but love that wine. Which one is killing you judgemental fools?
Fantastic video to bad the city is a unsafe place to visit
As unsafe as any rust belt old town with a poor population who don't want to work.
Tell you don’t live in SB without telling you don’t live SB. 😂
Indeed, people are fucking nuts here.
i can tell you don't know anything lmaoo
@@dashjeffreys6998 lol its only unsafe if you are poor lmfaooo
Goshen, Indiana is a must safer city with a real downtown. There are parts of the city limits of South Bend that are really dangerous, especially after dark. They didn't show the growing homeless population in the downtown of South Bend. I hope you don't mind getting panhandled by drunk and high people.
The rank-and-file jobs are in the country east of there. South Bend is a Woke city like Portland, Oregon.
The city is not in development for new industry. South Bend has become the worst place to live in Indiana per capita per violence South Bend does not believe in bringing new industry to its town.
Place is ran down and not safe to come here
