Very nice story. I am not sure if you have ever heard of the late "Scottsdale Mall" on the South Side of South Bend back in the late 70's. It was a two story mall, and was really awesome. It took a turn for the worst after the cities industrial area sort of lapsed, and lost a lot of jobs. I do wish that it could have gotten back on it's feet. It would have been one of the last historical two story malls left in the United States.
I loved Scottsdale mall as a child !
Same
Really? 2 story malls are that rare? I grew up going to Scottsdale.
I remember seeing so many movies at their two screens.
@@martymcfly3253 same. When I turned 16 and got my license, I would go to late screenings (sometimes 1 am). I took my girlfriend (now my wife) to see a Harry Potter movie there. I miss Scottsdale 😢
UP Mall was the place to shop back in the day when I lived in South Bend. It was where I used to take my daughter who was about 10 years old. A lot has changed but I still remember parts of what it was like. I shopped so much at L. S. Ayres. Thanks for doing this video!
Ive always loved to come here. Especially once Concord Mall died off.
Me too!
The concord mall is currently going under a huge renovation
@@lizm1580concord mall is officially dead.
I live in Michigan and first shopped in this mall when it was still under construction. The Hudsons was added later, though Simon owns it now, it was a DeBartolo mall when built. This mall had a chick-fil-a that was quite a novelty for the area. This mall also had the first bath and body works I had ever seen (I know, sounds crazy now) The L.S.Ayres was a nice store, that was new for me from Michigan. It ended up killing the older Mall south of town called Scottsdale Mall. That mall had an L.S. Ayres, an Ayr-way (later a target) and Montgomery Ward. My favorite store in that mall was a World Bazaar (I was a wicker freak in the 70's).
University Park Mall didn't even exist when I still lived in South Bend. Grape Road was a two-lane country road, surrounded by farmland as far as the eye could see.
I remember when Grape Road was barely 2 cars wide.
I remember when Grape and Cleveland Roads was a four-way stop with a blinking red stoplight.
As originally built, the "center" of the mall, between where L.S. Ayres and Hudson's used to be, had a large sunken seating area with a stage that was used for various activities.
I’m originally from Granger and the UP Mall used to be farmland owned by the Clery family and was sold to the DeBartolo company and the mall opened in the late 70’s. Used to be a 3 screen theater where the food court is in. Also used to be a bank out in the parking lot where the Tesla charging stations are. Pennys used to have an actual automotive service center as well. Service merchandise was across the street on the other Side of Grape Rd.
The conveyor belt in that store was always so much fun!
I remember the movie theater and if I'm not mistaken there was a Hardee's across from it
@@davidbrothers3788 Wag's Restaurant was across from the theater. Hardee's was at the opposite side of the mall, near the northwest mall entrance closest to JCPenney.
@@mattmullen1257 okay I remember Hardee's was were the food court is now
@@davidbrothers3788 Hardee's was where LensCrafters is now. Opposite side of the mall, in the JCPenney wing.
I just went here a fewweeks ago.
Still alive and thriving
Grew up there and spent a lot of time in that mall. So some of the best movies on those 3 screens, the Back to the Future trilogy specifically.
thank you for sharing I like to see the good with the bad so it's nice to see a mall doing at least ok. I'm in East TN just outside of Knoxville and our biggest mall that's doing well mall West Town is tearing down the old Sears building and putting in a Dick's Sporting goods and possibly a Tesla dealership along with some smaller shops. I've noticed similar in other locations where they replace the old Sears with new construction it does great if they try to sub-divide & or repurpose it usually doesn't work out as well. Love your videos hope you take care and stay healthy.
That happens a lot here where old department stores are repurposed to other stores. Even some get subdivided to multiple stores.
Thanks for watching.
Where do you get your facts from? When I visited that mall in mid 90's there was the movie theater and the food court. Also Mishawaka is EAST of South Bend. (Not west)
Honestly in my opinion you had looked up more facts for South Bend than Mishawaka. South Bend had a mall too and it was called Scottsdale Mall. However it was torn down in the 2000's.
As for Mishawaka, we had factories as well. Uniroyal was located on the north side of St. Joseph River at Main St. And Mishawka. It was torn down in the late 90's. And later on Mishawaka created a beautiful River Walk with parks at different locations around the walk. It has Cebtral Park on Mishawaka Ave that has an extensive play place that was costly. Mishawaka takes care of their people!
Yeah Scottsdale is still there it’s 2 shopping centers
Scottsdale Mall closed in 2004 and was demolished later that year. Erskine Village shopping plaza now operates on the site.
Glad you named this non dead mall this place in the holidays is loaded with people, this mall isn't going anywhere anytime soon
I worked here two different times in my life - once for Caledo Chili Trader's and once at EB Games. I was a complete mallrat as a teen LOL
Like so many kids in the 80's, the mall was one of thee places to hang out. I spent many a day in the UP Mall growing up in So. Bend....great memories!
Gotta love the creative minds that put The Disney Store right next to Victoria's Secret lol
I'm from the area I used to go to this mall every weekend and just hang out and shop in Highschool in the 2010s and it's still fun to visit to this day
Nice mall I will check it out next time I am in that area.
Cool to see your take on the mall. This was a very nice mall when I did this couple months back. I neglected to get candy at that store in the middle. That cookie store was good. I'm noticing that in proportion to Chicago area malls, these smaller city malls are busier.
Thanks for watching. I didn't notice the candy store. Wish I woulda went to it definitely a busier mall than a lot that are in Chicago.
This mall is beginning to die because of the effects from the pandemic.
I’ve seen many stores in the mall close like Banana Republic, Disney Store, JOS A Bank and Zales.
14 closed store fronts in a mall is not good!
That's really sad. But may be able to fill the storefronts because the time I went it was awfully busy.
Is the Disney store as a whole closing? Because I see comments on other mall videos they always keep saying the Disney Store closed. I am sure with Christmas coming up malls will be able to fill some vacancies even if it's jsut temporary.
@@dvferyance Looks like Disney Store is removed from their directory.
Plus the candy store by jc pennys
What an awesome history lesson - would love a versus comparison of Madison’s West Towne and East Towne!
I finished my college years at IUSB at 2001. This mall brought me so many memories
NON DEAD ??? GUY WAS JUST SHOT THERE 2 DAYS AGO LAY DEAD ON THE FLOOR....
Very sad. Surprised it happened.
@@UrbexAPeakInside It's true. Someone was killed INSIDE THE MALL!
@Drew K Really? That's fucked up.
I live in South Bend Indiana, and me and my mom, auntie and sisters would always go to that mall like literally all the time
I used to buy my jeans at "The County Seat" and my Frisbees at "Brown's Sporting Goods."
Awesome! I live in Mishawaka and this was my childhood mall! I still love it here!
I may possibly get a job in Mishawaka soon. Is it a good place to live and raise kids?
@@musthavemetalradio It’s not bad. Aside from the occasional assholes and the mayor trying to beautify the city, it’s actually a safe place to live.
I just watched your dead mall vid and commented, in this mall for 2 years my parents owned a nut&candy store called Morrows Nut House spent many days here too, as my mom managed the store and did payroll this mall is unrecognizable to what is was in the early 80s it was the first time we ever had a Chic fil a sandwich.
I remember Morrow's Nut House, where Blondie's Cookies now is. Chick-fil-A was next door, and nearby were Scotto's Pizza, Great Hot Dog Experience, and Burger Chef (later Hardee's).
@@mattmullen1257 ate at Burger Chef quite a bit too, I also went to Musicland and County seat and McKinney Shoes .
I loved that mall as a kid
this mall needs an athleta, northface, gap, foot action, jimmy jazz, norstrom , microsoft store, and maybe even a urban out or cotton on....i wish i could rach out to them, those stores would do so well smh
RIP to the person that died there
Yes. Its a shame.
I'm from mishawaka and I don't go there much but when I do it's usually pretty crowded
Yea, my hometown malls.
Mishawaka is to the east of South Bend, not to the west. Also, the original anchors to U.P. Mall in 1979 were J.C. Penny and Sears. L.S. Ayres was lured from Scottsdale mall on South Bend's south side the next year. Hudson's was nowhere to be found in the early years. My mother worked at the mall from its opening in 1979 until 2007.
L.S. Ayres opened later in 1979, sometime after JCPenney and Sears had opened. Ayres operated stores at University Park and Scottsdale malls simultaneously for many years. The University Park store was not a relocation from Scottsdale. Also, Hudson's opened in 1980.
The UP LS Ayres was a tier 1 store, the Scottsdale one was a B team store that got leftover stock from the bigger main stores, at least that's how it was when I worked there in the late 90's
This was like the only mall open during covid time
My first job was in that mall. I worked at Fannie May candies. I also worked at Hot Sam's, Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor, Target and Sears, all in University Park Mall too.
Are you thinking of Scottsdale Mall perhaps? Farrell's and Target never were at University Park Mall, but they had locations at Scottsdale.
@@mattmullen1257 thank you for the correction, you are right.
Have you done Florida Malls? Citrus Park Mall in Citrus Park near Tampa and Countryside Mall in Clearwater on US19 very alive malls.
I know this was filmed in the middle of the Covid Crisis, but it still has lost a lot of traffic from the early 2000's.
probably the shootings scared everyone
There was a shooting at this mall on Saturday.
I heard. So sad.
UPM and the retail on both grape rd and main st is the only shopping north of Indy. It’s there or online sites
used to look more orangey/brown color inside if i remember correctly
There was 2 shootings in one weekend here. If Barnes and noble leaves it’s closing
Don't think they will die anytime soon. I went there on a wednesday couple months back. Expecting it to be empty, nope! The mall was packed
The mall is on the East side of South Bend....IN MISHAWAKA.....
miss my city
Your other west, bro.
Not sure about this mall. What do they do with the Sears? Was talk they'd knock it down and rebuild which makes sense, idk who would take over that space as it currently exists. There were a lot of closures even prior to the pandemic. JCP closes and you have two out of three dead anchors. B&N isn't exactly a department store.
HUdson's was converted to Marshall Field's in 2001 not 1997.
I miss south bend
I live in mishawaka to
I haven't been to this mall in YEARS.. possibly 2017 or 2018.. its now 2022.. is the mall still this empty? It used to be packed every time I went.
edit: also you said west side of south bend.. that's actually east side of south bend/west side of mishawaka.. and that's actually in mishawaka
This was filmed during Coof season so not many stores were open. It’s fully opened now.
Depends on the day. Its usually packed on weekends
Tbh I live here and I love that store
Rip
It really is a dead mall so many people getting shot I was there for 2 shootings
Great video! I just recently uploaded a video to my channel about the largest mall in America. Called Mall of America in Minnesota.
East side of South Bend- not West side
This mall is in a weird state. It's alive, but it has vacant spots
That mall done has like 5 shootings
Massive food court?
Very much so 3 stories high. Massive from front to back also.
Yeah, I wouldn't say massive. It's got a high ceiling, I'll give it that.
Very dangerous and alot of scamming going on..the scammers charged my friend 2000 dollars on her card and got away with it.
Not dead but people get shot there often, unfortunately
🤣🤣🤣🤣
HaHaHa... Simon keeps throwing big money into that mall in hopes to keep the stores leased...Hard to believe the retailers are making any kind of profit though.
I like Michigan Football, not Notre Dame
my girlfriend and I were late 70s early 80s mall rats t this mll except when we went into Chicago to shop. the mall is a pale imitation of its previous days. however heritage square is across the road. im back in town since ova after living in chicago for 35 years. you either shop online or go into Chicago or major cities for boutiques. there was a shooting in this mall since ive been here dude to the ghetto element in south bends west side. if you want to see a better mall look at Vernon hills Illinois or northbrook our. Your mall is only as nice as the community that surrounds it.
Clearly you aren’t from the west side of south bend, it’s not all ghetto, there are a lot of decent people who work hard and pay taxes just like you do. I’d advise you not judge based on what you hear from the media.
@@cip6292 no I grew up in granger on an end cul de sac on a double fairway in the original knollwood. Originally we lived off Corby during preschool.
I was referring with the shooting to the ghetto element from south bend. There is an area concentrated with people also escaping Chicago. I believe that it is now referred to as little Gary.
I meant no disrespect to hard working people who live in south or west areas of south bend that aren’t as posh.
I knew this mall when it was built and we went to it all the time. Our parents were never worried about our safety there. It was also a different time.
Although during the 35 years living in Chicago they manage to slaughter over three thousand people a year in certain south and west areas. Now the very nice areas aren’t secure anymore.
@@cip6292 in 1982 the south bend school corporation introduced busing. I also worked the summer before college in the migrant farm workers children’s summer school program.
Instead of integrating the community I see people who have moved to penn Harris school district , or Michigan over the line or St Joseph or other catholic schools.
Clay high school which I graduated from is a shambles of its former self in test scores etc. This isn’t from the media it’s from reality. I’ve been staying in Michiana for eight months now.
This didn’t age well.
I hate this mall.
Keep the comments positive. This is my channel.
