- Pokemon Z Version was expected to come out after Pokemon X and Y, but we never got it. We got Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire a year after, and then 2 years after that we got Sun and Moon, with the 6th generation of Pokemon ending without a proper definitive edition or any backstory on Zygarde. So what happened to Pokemon Z Version?

Look at it this way, in a decade or so The Pokémon Company will need to put something out one Christmas and we'll see the updated Gen 6 Director's Cut we were denied.
Zerup hopefully we’ll be able to go there in Sword and Shield, since the Galar region is based on the UK which is quite close to the region Kalos is based on (France).

Feel kinda bad for whoever directed these games. They obviously had a vision, and then all their ideas turned into extra content for other pokemon games. Hopefully we can take that train to Kalos tho

Need to consider it's Nintendo. I was expecting a Z as well but my guess was something to do with Pokemon GO and Detective Pikachu was around the corner near that time or so I think..
The best to do now is give as much feedback as possible to Nintendo, even if it's negative.. But I'm afraid Nintendo gets to do what they want.
Edit: This is my hunch but it's best to see who's in control of Nintendo now. The Company changes counting on who's CEO for example.

Gen 1 - Yellow added a story more similar to the anime.
Gen 2 - Crystal gave Suicune a spotlight and added the girl protagonist.
Gen 3 - Emerald made both Aqua and Magma Evil and have Rayquaza play an important part.
Gen 4 - Platinum gave more depth to Giratina with the Distortion World and stopping Team Galactic.
Gen 5 - Black2/White2 made Kyurem more interesting and connects it to Reshiram and Zekrom with Fusion.
Gen 6 - Zygarde will forever sit in a cave and do nothing to stop Team Flare and will not return until Sun and Moon.
Gen 7 - Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon gave an alternative story to Sun and Moon and also connects Necrozma with Solgaleo and Lunala.
Let's not forget the moving sprites in Crystal. Sure it doesn't seem that special today, but that shit blew every kid's mind back when it was released.

I'm not a really big fan of X and Y, but even I was dissapointed that Pokemon Z wasn't a thing. A 3rd version or even fully fledged sequel to X and Y could've actually made the Kalos region memorable in my eyes.

Tbh contrary to popular opinion, I actually really enjoyed the Kalos region. It was very refreshing and introduced the likes of mega evolution and character customization. With that being the case though, both the story and the lore behind Zygarde left much to be desired.

Although Pokémon Ultra Moon and Ultra sun were garbage , I have to admit Black 2 and White 2 had a different start, different main characters, it made you fell in love with the main story and I'm glad they didn't repeat the whole story and instead they gave us a continue to how team plasma just was divided . The post game was okay also, with the PWT.

Yes I've been waiting for this type of video forever! I just replayed Y in January and was left satisfied with the game but I noticed that there was a lot of potential left in the game that was left untouched. For example:
-The Power Plants on Rt 13 are still locked and probably had something to do with Volcanion
-The ghost girl in Lumiose City
-Zygarde and Greninja's anime-exclusive forms (at the time in 2016)
-The XY & Z anime series teased a huge arc with Zygarde and Team Flare that would have probably tied into Z somehow.
- AZ's Eternal Floette was never released and there was more potential to his story than what was in X & Y.
- The train in Couriway Town is never used
-The secret notes left in both Couriway Town's train station and Lumiose Station were left unexplained
- Southern Kalos was teased as its own subregion in Kiloude City just like Central, Coastal, and Mountainous but was only ONE city.
-There are probably more but I am all out, might edit this later.
Now, I am genuinely upset that Z was never made.
the note in couriway was left by professor sycamore. when you get to the town he tells you that he left something here, and you can search for it if you want. the note in lumiose wasn't explained, however

I think I heard the ghost girl was just added for no real reason. Just to get people talking about it, since the ghost stuff caught the attention of players in gen 5 previously and peaked their interest.
Actually, there are always some places you can't go to or unexplained mysteries in pokemon games:
The ghost girl on the bridge in gen 5 was never explained.
You couldn't go inside some doors in gen 3 and 4 (you know, the ones blocked by a flower pot or boxes).
Furthermore:
A 3rd version usually don't add a whole new subregion. The only time this happened was in a sequel (B2W2).
If we follow your logic, we also never got Northern Unova teased by Anville Town.
You can get Zygarde 100% in Alola apparently and you can also get Ash Greninja in gen 7 by using the demo version (and Ash Greninja is not worth the effort, trust me).
AZ's Eternal Floette probably needs to be in the game files to be able to appear in that one cutscene at the end of the game.
The anime follows its own logic, you shouldn't take into account some arcs it could use. It also teased the GS ball back in gen 2 and that never existed in the games. Mewtwo was also never used by Giovanni back in gen 1 compared to the anime.
Stop living in the past, Kalos sucked, good riddance.
I hope we get Pokémon z in the future. Xy got me into Pokémon games and the anime got me into all anime in general. So xy is pretty important to me, and I would love a remake.

@Angel Monroy Just like you're supposed to enter the Cave of Being in B2W2 to get to Sinnoh but that never worked. All you get from that cave is the lake guardians. I tried everything to get from Unova to Sinnoh bro. Nothing worked.
Funny thing is, pokemon x and y were the two games/gen that needed a definitive version to wrap up or clear up so many loose ends and missing pieces from the base games.
Imo X&Y were begging for a "definitive" version. Platinum is still my favorite game in the series due to how much it built on D&P. Sadly it doesn't seem like Gamefreak are interested in doing anything like that with their future games, which to me at least is very, very disappointing. I mean I hope I'm wrong, but based on X&Y and USUM I have a bad feeling deep down that I may be right.
Blaise Platinum didn’t really build up a ton on dIamond and pearl. What it done was fix diamond and pearl. Those games were fucking unplayable due to their speed.

If Z came out and solved all the mysteries as well as made the game harder like giving Gym leaders more than 3 Pokémon with 3 moves, I woulda liked Kalos a lot more
I'm still pissed at Game Freak for integrating Zygarde's backstory into Sun & Moon instead of making a separate game for it like they did in Gens III, IV, V and VII. There are a lot of theories surrounding it: (And it's gonna be quite long! I spent an hour writing it! Still, I recommend sitting this comment through if you don't have to go anywhere.)
1. After X / Y launched in 2013 (what a year that was!), the main development team started focusing on the next generation (which became Sun & Moon) and another part focused on Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire. Game Freak has said that they only made FireRed / LeafGreen as well as HeartGold / SoulSilver because as the series moved from the Game Boy to the Game Boy Advance, they completely overhauled the data structure of the games in order to future-proof the franchise quite a bit. This made transferring Pokémon from Gold / Silver / Crystal to the then-new Ruby / Sapphire games impossible and it upset a lot of fans. As a compensation, Game Freak released FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, which are remakes of Gen I games. By playing through one game from both series (and trading with the opposite for version-exclusives), players could (re-)capture all 386 Pokémon at the time and complete the national Pokédex, of course, except for Mythicals which were handed out via in-person events. And since this point there has always been a way to transfer a Pokémon to the newest games and once players transferred their favorites over, they didn't have to worry about it ever again.
For this reason, they never considered a Generation III remake, at least not for a long time so 2014 seemed like the year for Pokémon Z. With existing methods (Pal Park in Gen IV, Poké Transfer Lab in Gen V and the Pokémon Bank) players could theoretically transfer their favorite Hoenn Pokémon from Ruby / Sapphire all the way to X / Y. But after they've seen the demand for a remake from fans, who yelled "OMG Hoenn confirmed!!!44!" every single time somebody mentioned something related to Hoenn, Game Freak gave them a pass and released Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for the Nintendo 3DS in 2014. The huge technological leap between the Nintendo 3DS and the Game Boy Advance also help the dev. team justify making a remake.
And thus, all the resources they had either went to developing the new next-generation titles or the Hoenn remakes and so nobody was left to develop a Pokémon Z game. Maybe the declining sales of previous enhanced versions and potential lack of demand from fans to buy a third game in the same generation after XY and ORAS made the company decide to cancel the game. And basically, everything they wanted to include in a Pokémon Z game was integrated into Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire instead (such as a refined UI, cool exclusive forms for Mythical Pokémon like Hoopa Unbound, more Megas [ORAS introduced almost as many as XY], better controls and bugfixes) and then Zygarde got it's day in the spotlight in Sun and Moon.
As a player who always liked the Kalos region (and still loves it to this day), it was really weird to see all these Kalosian stuff like Zygarde cells and different Mega Evolution stones introduced in games that don't even take place in the Kalos region nor have any other connection to it.
2. This one is super far-fetched and most of the time it's not a valid reason to cancel a video game, especially one that resembles the real world very loosely, but some speculate that the November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks were the reason that Game Freak cancelled Pokémon Z.
Do I believe it? I don't, but at the same time, I'm also well-aware that it was a huge catastrophe for France and it would have been very awkward to release a game that is heavily inspired by French culture in that time frame. Overall I can't see this as being the actual driving force behind the cancellation because one: nobody can see a tragedy like this coming, and two: by November 2015 game was most likely already cancelled as it was only 5 months away from Sun / Moon's first announcement.
3. (and onto something much happier) Maybe it's still coming! Although the chance of it being a standalone 3DS game is getting slimmer each day, it can still be a mayor part in Sword and Shield. These new games take place in the Galar region, an area inspired by the UK. In case if you don't know, in real-life, the UK and France is connected by an underground railway tunnel called the Channel Tunnel which is considered a part of the 7 modern wonders of the World. In my opinion, it would make perfect sense to pay homage to it by including a railway that you can board in the Galar region and it takes you Lumiose City in Kalos.
And by the way Kalos means beauty, and it would be a shame if it wouldn't be represented in some form on the Switch, the console that can produce a lot more beauty graphics-wise than a 3DS.
Maybe the super well-made Prism Tower stage in Smash Bros. Ultimate is a hint at a potential return of Kalos? There is a lot more there than what meets the eye, that's for sure.
Even in the first Sw/Sh trailer, there is a cave that resembles the Glittering Cave from X and Y so maybe it's just a matter of time until we get the official confirmation? Either way, I'm excited!

I think what happened is that so many people “called it” and they didn’t want to do something that was expected. Everyone straight up just assumed that Z was going to be a thing. So GameFreak saw that an went, “oh you think you know what’s coming next? NOPE!”
this is my favorite theory so far
Even if you think back to when X&Y was released people were already predicting Pokémon Z. Plus all the legendarys that they didn’t want to release right away got data mined (well technically we found out because you count ask for hoopa Diancie and Volcanion on the GTS but you get my point) and everyone flipped and spread them across the internet. Game Freak could not have liked that. So they punished us with an incomplete plot 😂😂😂
Facts dude. The "Pokemon community" thinks that they're able to see into the future because they created a pattern in their heads of how game freak should release games. I think game freak is getting sick of that, and I think the Lets Go games were a part of that as well.

X and Y were very undercooked, looking back on them.
Well that aged well..
I always found XY postgame really weird, like there were only 2 more legendaries to catch and that little detective story and that was it. Felt like it somehow got cut short. ORAS on the other hand felt like they went 120% with everything, so many new unique models, an extended story, all those new megas, free flying, tons of quality of life improvements and much more.
But I think by the time ORAS came out, they already had given up on Z, seeing how they shoved 30+ legendaries in those games, most without a proper location. 6th gen development just feels a little off somehow.
Kalos is the only region that didn't got an enchanted version.
You know what? I don't care. If GameFreak makes a new version on the 3DS (not the Switch for reasons.) I'll buy it.

Pokemon X and Y are my favorite Pokémon games so I was very upset when we didn't get Z version
My only guess is that X/Y wasn't popular enough for them to bother making a Z version. Also the fact that fans wanted so bad a gen 3 remake was a more requested during the year X/Y was a thing didnt help.
The X/Y anime end up being more popular than the game in general since the anime did a great job making Kalos memorable while the game didn't.
Still suck to see that Zygarde unlike Rayquaza, Giratina and Kyurem who got a redemption end up just being hype in the anime, while in the game it was a " i'm in a cave for the lol" and " i end up being a find my cells to build me in a gen where i don't belong" pokemon.
i dont think so. what companys mostly go by are salesnumbers and not the popularity. also,black and white were the most hated games,yet they got something better than a definitive version. its most likely that gen5 was actually really hated like i said and that that factor completely threw gamefreak out of whack. they had no real idea what to do with kalos and then they just decided not to even try to fix the unfinished pile of ideas
I.... wouldn't really call Kalo's anime that popular really... sure it was way better than the unova saga by a longshot, but that's saying a lot considering how bad they messed up unova's anime.... Kalos had a lot of potential, but fell flat in many areas, the movies were some of the worst in the entire series, the anime had a ton of stale moments, and could have been done way better.... Same with Alola's anime adaptation, it's kinda too relaxed and many plotlines and characters fall short.

B2W2 had an awesome region but the main story was a bit forgettable compared to BW (literally, I have to regularly replay these games to remember what happened in them).
Ah well, I wish they revisit gen 6 and when they remake gen 6, they add a 3rd game version being Z. Focused on more than Zygarde

The Galar region is based off of the UK as a whole I think, the top area is snowy (reminds me of scotland), there's a city in the middle that seems kinda steampunk (london was hit hardest with the industrial era, so england) and in the bottom left but still connected to the rest is a bit of land that reminds me of my country (wales) and finally theres a little island to the side of that (northern ireland) even though it seems to be in the wrong place.
annebutnotreally It looks the most similar to the UK upside down. That one industrial city appears to be based off manchester/Edinburgh and the mountain range represents wales. That’s what I believe.

London is up north on the Galar map, it's an upside down UK. So the south of the region is Scotland and Wales is in the east (and Ireland would be an eastern island if it was in there, which I hope it is).

A GAME THEORY!!!
XY had potential. The 3000 year war was an interesting idea for a story, I was extremely curious about the ghost girl and just who killed her (the message scrawled on the train station sign about going for help was supposedly related to her. Was she tied to Flare, perhaps?), and characters like Sycamore, Lysandre, and Malva all have unique roles that just weren't developed as much as they could have been. Zygarde also was disappointing, and it felt very shoehorned into the Alola games. It felt like a systems test, like there should have been more.
It's especially disappointing in characters like Sycamore and Lysandre's case. They're supposed to be friends, but Sycamore plays oblivious that Lys is in a pretty dark mindset and only drops it after Lys presumably dies and it's too late to try talking to the dude. Could you imagine if they actually acted on and developed their friendship, and if one of them tried to save the other? That would definitely be pretty heartwrenching. (Tho I would suggest toning down Lysandre since he was way too obvious.) Gen 7 legit felt like a filler gen
I love a lot of the Pokémon like primarina, lycanroc, darttrix, toucannon, kommo-o, dawn wings necrozma and naganadel
USUM felt rushed and LGPE felt like a Pokemon switch teaser
But overall felt like a filler gen, I’d say gen 7 is way weirder than gen 6. They may have been cutting costs until gen 8
Sun and Moon were masterpieces though.
The lost girl,the extra train station that doesn't go anywhere but " connects kalos ", unused powerplant doors and zygarde are all obvious setup for a z version that just didn't happen.

This was a reason why I was falling out of Pokémon back in 2017. I felt kalos didn’t leave a mark on me and well I wanted a stronger league. And alil better post game
Gen 6 should've been a longer generation, just like gen 3 and gen 4, lasting 4 years instead if the usual 3 years. But because Sun & Moon would've released after the Switch, I think they should've delayed Sun & Moon to 2017, or even 2018 and release it on the Switch with upscaled graphics!
I honestly hate how Pokémon generations last only 3 years. They should last 4 or even 5 years!

Eternatus's story feels more like a Kalos extention
Timing was the main issue. GF was fresh off of releasing ORAS, and Nintendo/The Pokemon Company wanted new games for the 20th Anniversary. And the Nintendo Switch was on the horizon. They were able to crank out Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, but literally, everything from 2014 onwards was moving way too fast for GF to keep up. Plus, X and Y were poorly received. So Game Freak probably skipped on Z for that reason as well.
The lack of a Z version makes me so mad because X and Y for all their flaws were really fun and quick paced Pokemon games that in my opinion deserve a follow up more than the slow-paced Sun and Moon
Because they used the time to make Z-moves. Ever thought why they were called Z-moves? Your character even makes an X pose at the start of them!

We at least got the anime but never got a definitive 6th gen
I really like the Kalos region, and I wish it had gotten more than it did. Would be amazing to have a game that visits Kalos in the postgame, though.
I think that maybe kalos will show up in the new Pokémon games (sword and shield) or there will be a remake for the switch

Thank you for talking about this!!! This has always bothered me because gen 6 just felt so incomplete & barren compared to other generations. I love X and Y so much but tbh it was a mess. Sooo many things were left out even the 3 other legendaries (Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanian) weren’t even part of the main game but were added way after as regular downloads not even extra story attached to them. Zygarde and Pokemon Z were done so dirty and it’s just so strange that it’s the only 3rd legendary that completes the trio didn’t get it’s own definitive version. Like out of al gens, this one probably needed it the most and it didn’t get one *literally everything* needed to be expanded on. Like you mentioned, I think a lot was expanded upon in other games like the extra mega evolutions in oras and the zygarde story in gen 7. All I’m hoping for is to go back to Kalos after completing Galar to fill in the abundant amount of plot holes left in Kalos. I want to know the backstory of ghost girl!!!

I actually really enjoyed X and Y. However, one major fault was how fast the game moved. Before the 2nd gym, the game moved quite slowly and it was reasonable. That whole time is quite memorable to me because of how long it took to get through it. However, once you reach the 3rd gym, the game just zooms through and everything from there became quite forgettable. Not to mention none of the gym leaders had substance or depth. Im so annoyed at how dirty gen 6 was done because it had the potential to be an amazing game. At least the anime was iconic and it kind of saved it.
It would’ve been funny if they made a sequel to X and Y and called it X squared and Y squared, because those letters are used often in algebra
Back then I expected Pokemon Z to come out as well. It was the best idea of elevating the gen 6 story. Back then when the leaks of Pokemon Z came out, I was super excited and was waiting for that game with passion. I was thinking that the game would clear and explain some things which were not answered and a better explanation to the story of Zygarde , Xerneas and Yveltal. They could also have included the Kalos myth where Yveltal absorbed every live and turned that knight into rock, his gogoat and talonflame. That would have been so cool.

Since there WAS no Z Version, when I was a kid, I made a fan comic that depicted what Z would look like. It took place years after X/Y, when Xerosic took over as the leader of Team Flare, and pretty much turned the team into a genocidal army, hellbent on killing everyone in Kalos. The protagonist also had a Zygarde Core as his starter.

They probably ran out of time, cuz ORAS is a LOT more work for a remake than i imagine, Platinum or Crystal were. And given how much content there was (the game straight up doesnt end) they might have decided that they didnt have enough time for Pokemon Z and spent more time working on ORAS which resulted in the large amount of content for a remake, including the Delta Episode, new Mega-Evolutions (which is pretty wild since not even Sun and Moon and USUM introduced new ones), being able to ride Mega-Lati in a 3D map, a lot of Post-Game mini-side quests and the Battle Maison.
About riding on the Eon Duo, I was a little disappointed we didn't get to do that on Charizard in Sun and Moon
I personally believe that Pokémon Z version was in development at one point, but that Game Freak decided to push all its resources into a whole new game (Sun and Moon) instead rather than do another remake of existing games. This is why the Zygarde forms and appropriately named "Z-Moves" were put in those games, as tribute to their scrapped idea and to make use of their ideas for Z version.
Pokémon Z was awesome, so much better than Pokémon GT and Pokémon Super.

Zygarde and Ash-Greninja were in Sun and Moon not because they wanted them to be in the game but to advertise the Anime. This is the first time the games where advertising the Anime because always it is the other way around.
I got pokemon x ( digitally ) for free back in 2014 from the club Nintendo promotion ( I finished the story but didn’t do anything from the post game and I don’t really remember a lot of stuff since I last played it in 2015 ) and I finally got a physical version of X just yesterday 3-28-19 and pokemon Y came in today 3-29-19 , my save file got deleted when I did a 3ds to N3ds system transfer , pokemon x is the first pokemon game I played all the way through and I liked it , it’s casual friendly I must say , I also got ORAS almost 2 weeks ago 3-16-19 and there IS too much water , lol jk 😂 nah but I hear a lot of people disliked X and Y because it had a lot of potential but the story didn’t get fully wrapped up or something and they would’ve wanted a Z version to fully expand and finish the story arc for Zygarde

Kalos got robbed game wise, but the anime version is the best hands down so far. XYZ is how I got into anime. Proud to be a Kalos Kid but DAMN.
Maybe they were waiting for the Switch to gain popularity and that they might release Pokèmon Z on the Switch later on, sure hey, on the Direct they said that there'd be a surprise between now and the release of Sword and Shield

I think z never came out because they was either busy with Or/As or they couldn’t design the story due to Zygarde being in X and Y, but then you think that maybe they could let you catch all legendaries or the post game has another story with maybe diance and volcanion. Also maybe magearna because it was in the pokemon X Y and Z movie.
Also, they had already put a lot of work in X and Y...
The theory that Sword & Shield could be to XY what second gen was to first gen just blew my mind. Nothing would make me happier. I'm probably in the minority here but XY is probably my favorite gen after second gen and it feels like a slap in the face that they didn't finish it and left so many questions unanswered.

I think what killed Z was the advancement of development cycles. Gamefreak no longer gets years to develop a game, they release each year similar to other top franchises like call of duty
