***** Exactly! I drink but not very often. When I drink I usually don't care for getting drunk. These days it's a rare thing for me to want to drink to the point of serious drunkenness.

Hey Nixie, how about pouring/sprinkling some water from the roof top (car's ceiling) while one is drunk. May be that's some what risky but it wakes the person instantly!
Or, you can project a halogen right in front of the driver....of course when he/she is drunk too much, so it focuses into the face... Or you can take ME with you when you are drunk, I'll take care of the rest....;)

I have a better idea. Incorporate that device into the car itself, so when the driver is drunk, the car won't start at all. That way it would eliminate the point of failure: humans. Because... no one will ever use the app, especially when they're drunk!

The only real solution to drunk driving is autonomous vehicles. I realize this described device is for the current period before that's implemented, but to be effective, the device would need to be installed and used. But unless compelled by probation or something, I can't see anybody voluntarily installing one. Part of being drunk is feeling empowered and having reduced inhibitions. Drunks always *believe* they can drive well enough.

      *****
It's well established that when pickpockets were hanged in London public executions, other pickpocket criminals would prey on the crowd. Punishment often isn't a deterrent.
Furthermore, the criminal justice system in the US (that's the one I'm familiar with) doesn't do a good job at determining guilt. It's a money-making system that is geared to to that before being fair. Innocent people, truly innocent people, get convicted all the time.
Do you have any evidence that harsher punishment translates into fewer drunk-driving wrecks?

That second hack sounds a bit like the system airforces experiment with for relaying critical information.
In the middle of a fight, the pilot will miss the 57th alarm that pops up. SO in stead, they have the computer play a message in the voice of a loved one, "Daddy, your tail's on fire." or something like that.
So, you're nodding off and suddenly your granny's voice blasts through the car. "You're not going to sleep, are you?!"

I wonder how difficult it would be for someone to intercept the transmissions. If your friends know you are drunk, then so can other people.
Really this is a high tech solution to a problem that is really simple to solve. There are two things ALL drunk driving cases have in common; drinking and driving. You could start by avoiding drinking; or at least getting excessively drunk. You could also avoid driving. If you are going to be out and about and consuming alcohol; leave the car keys at home. If you absolutely feel the need to get plastered, do it at home.
The only reason there is any sort of a need for this type of gadget is because people are stupid when it comes to alcohol.

Personally I love the idea of a "pay it forward app" where you can pick up people who can't safely drive themselves. Like Lyft, but only for drunk people. Then again, this was my idea and not the teams here -- but still, I'd drive for it! :D

Nixie Pixel Fun coverage! But there is no incentive for people to put it in their own car, unless they can't keep themselves from drinking and driving. Something with an incentive would be an object-tracking AI with a camera at the front of the car, where it can signal if a cat/dog/animal like pattern is spotted, and warn you to slow down.
It would also trigger by low road-visibility.
This would be more generally useful, as it could help collect data and train perception-circuits for a driving AI.

Although I don't get drunk, I see a problem with the face recognition: I've lost coherency from being too tired before but my head never dropped. I'd really need a loud "wake up!" before my head went out of view. By then I could be already driving off a bridge. What about checking brain waves? When going into "micro sleep" you lose awareness without even closing your eyes.
My brother woke up straddling the guard rail on the way to their honeymoon suite and totaled his car, so I was more lucky than a lot of sleepy drivers.

Needs to be integrated into the car's ignition system, because it relies on the user remembering to use it. If you got into your car & had to take the breath test in order to start it that would be way more effective.

Better yet, just let the cars start driving. Just like in the old days with horses all you'd have to do is get in the car and say something like "Take me home Bessy" or whatever lol. Then obviously it would take you home.

Hij Nixie, i am a big fan of tour show on youtube. I think you have tot make it tour bussines and make money of it. And be yourself. Tot a remake wear whatever you feel comfortable with. As a man wearing what you like is difficult. I like to wear skirts, but not to expres myself as a female.

They have this tech in cars in Australia. If your a convicted drink driver you have to blow into a device installed in your car every 15-20 mins or the car shuts down.
Every months its calibrated and your history is looked at.
Why would you want this when you can just be smart to start with. We are so keen to give away freedom.
