- The 85mm F1.8 from Sony is a $600 lens that punches above its weight and, in my opinion, is the best value lens you can buy for the Sony full frame system.

Dude - you are so close to 1000 hundreds - you deserve more, so much more. Great content.
Dude - you are so close to 1000 - you deserve more. Great content.
Thanks!!
I just purchased the 85mm yesterday after renting it for 3 days and let me say you did a big part on helping me decide so thank you for that
just about to buy and seeing if its still the best after all this time helpful video!
That may have been one of the funniest review videos I've ever seen.. had to rewind just to laugh again. Nice work
haha - thanks!!
1K subs! Woohoo, congrats man!!! The 85mm is my favorite lens to use for reaction shots for weddings during reception and the bokeh that I always get from it is amazing. I have the Rokinon though and it’s all manual. I always use it with the GH5 and can’t film a wedding without it. It’s such a great lens to have! Although mine becomes 170mm in focal length (2x the reach since I use it with a micro four thirds system) and also the reason why I like it so much.
Thanks, Bernie!! 170mm manual focus - I'd be worried I could never get it in focus - You're better than me - haha!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis, haha... 😂 I just got used to it since I have it like forever. Haha... And I always have the camera on monopod and with the focus peaking on so they help a ton. Lol.
@@BernieHipos Do you have a 42.5 for the traditional portrait length??
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis, I have the 12-40mm Olympus PRO which I also love. It makes my workflow efficient and doesn’t have to change lenses during the shoot. At 40mm it’s really great for portrait shots and I’m happy with the result. My 85mm Rokinon is only being used during ceremony and reception exclusively for reactions shots of the guests.
@@BernieHipos makes perfect sense. That’s why you’re the wedding pro!!
nice to see another video from Mr. Bennett!
Nice to see your comment :)
I think the 85mm and 105mm are the best focal length for portraits and other work too on your full frame camera. I used to use an 85mm a lot back in film days.
For the price, I think it would be a great buy. Good recommendation ...Cheers
Right you are, J.R. It’s hard to argue with that quality for that price. Gotta have a decent portrait lens!!
My first Sony lens besides the kit for my A7C - so happy I got it.
That kit lens is pretty darn good. I’m happy with it for just walking around.
@@2cats1guy Sony kit lenses are underrated - because everyone is obsessed with BOKEH! But if you know what you are doing - you can get amazing shots - plus it's stabilized.
@@2cats1guy It is really good. stabilized, like Mark said and I can really nice pictures out of it. I can pull out the 85 when i need that shallow depth of field - but for walking around - you are right - it does the trick
Great value for sure. Although I have the 90mm macro that doubles as my portrait lens.
Great lens - a fair bit more $ but when you want to do macro - there is no better!!
1000 subs. In a minute or 2!!! Weeee! Keep the ads coming. Oh…great video by the way!
Thanks, Philip - I'll be rich by the end of the day. Haha
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I will try watching some ads to the end ;-)
@@philipaggesen hopefully they will be camera related. And when square space calls - I’ll be waiting. 🤣🤣
i actually had the GM, but after seeing Jason Vong's video on the two - I returned it. I don't take enough portraits to justify the extra 1000 bucks
me too haha
I got this, the 35 1.8 and the 50 1.8. Even the 50 is a lot better than people say after the firmware updates it has. To me the 50 or the 85 is the best value.
I haven’t tried the 50 - but i have heard that when it first came out people didn’t love it - but, like you said, with firmware updates - it looks really solid now
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis it is!
I actually use this for video, too - I thought I was the only one. 😜
We’re in this together, Earl!!
Just pick this 85mm F1.8 for USD278 (MYR1235). Guess I will have alot to shoot with this new baby lens!
I never subscribe on the first video, I decided to watch three of yours before hitting the button. Two down, one to go, but let's be honest, I already made up my mind! 😉 C'mon algorithm, do your thing!
Haha - Thanks, Mattias - Hopefully the algorithm will listen to you!!
Always my first lens for a system is an 85
Yes, indeed!!
:) So, this one or the Meike f1,4?
I should do a video on this!! but the Meike for me
The Darryl Pervis photo is bound to get you featured on Time Magazine's cover! How did you do it?! 😜
Hilariously - it was featured in Reader’s Digest. They were doing a piece on him and he called me in a panic because his photos were 15 years old😂😂
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis You're kidding right?! Hahaha that's absolutely hilarious! Way to be the man in the clutch and use your pro gear to get the job done 👍
Next stop, Mark Bennett, the Comedian's Photographer 🤣
@@KPGuitarStudios it’s true. And other comics are asking for headshots. I’m gonna have to start dressing cooler - like a real photographer 🤣🤣
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Haha that's awesome! It's time for Mark to get a French beret and get a nice colorful scarf haha
@@KPGuitarStudios hahaha
This is on my wish list. What are your thoughts about the Viltrox 85 1.8 or the Samyang/Rokinon 85 1.4 for the same price?
I have't tested them yet - I will try to and do another video. But in general, I prefer going with a Sony lens if I can - just because you know that reliability and compatibility is there. But Samyang/Rokinon and Viltrox are making some really competitive lenses. So for me, I wasn't going to get the Sony - I would likely look at the Viltrox because it's similar in weight and size and is cheaper. The Rokiyang gives you that 1.4 - so that is appealing to a lot of people. In my world, I don't see me using 1.4 much and the lens is heavier and costs about the same. Still - I'd love to test to make sure!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I feel the same. Always go with Sony unless it’s like 3x the price. I have an old Sigma 50mm 1.4 so I feel like I don’t need an 85 1.4 but for the same price from Samsung it’s tempting. The one benefit of the Sony is that custom button.
Bro reminds me of pewdie pie lool good vid
“Everyday morons” 😆
🤣🤣
Everyone wants the blur! Let’s go to a big fancy epic park and take portraits with an indistinguishable, generic background of foliage and a shrubbery
Ok - me and you fly to Yosemite with 1.2’s so no one has an idea where we are. 🤣🤣
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis those blurry brown triangles behind you are so… great!
