dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all the latest movies on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my brother for the last few weeks =)
It is so good hearing the things you didn't like, it gives perspective on things that we might not necessarily think at first. Like if we knew the crop factor of the M50 was going to give such a drastic difference to the 50mm or 85mm, we probably would have not gotten the M50 but hey we live we learn! and we have you guys to bother with our questions :)
Been deliberating a portrait lens for my brand new A7III and your video pretty much sealed the deal. I really like the bokeh pattern that this lens produces and the price is what I can afford right now.
Just purchased this lens. Just bought a Sony A7C. I do street photography and live between 35-50mm focal lengths. Other than doing street portraits I don Know how I’ll use this lens. I will have to take photos further away from my subjects than I’m use to. A few benefits of this lens are the size and weight. This lens is at the limits of the A7C. In addition, as you suggest, this lens is cheaper than the 85/1.4. Will take it to a carnival this weekend. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I intend to spend the next year saving for a Sony A7iii and two lenses. An 85mm and a 24-70mm that I can use for wedding photography. Thanks for helping me decide what 85mm I will save for.
Always love how simple and straightforward your reviews are Aaron. The images look very sharp indeed. Would have liked to have seen a direct comparison between the Sony 1.4 and 1.8 though. Maybe something you could show us in the future? Great review anyways my friend.
Yes I was planning to rent out the 1.4 at the same time but sadly the rental shop didn't have it in stock. I'll definitely try to do a comparison in the future!
Oh it really is a lovely focal length! There's a great cheap option for Canon DSLR's, the 85 1.8 which we use often that's also awesome without breaking the bank!
Nice portraits in the intro. Agree with the 85mm f/1.8 Sony being a really nice portrait lens. BTW, I like your portraits best when your subject has her head tilted slightly forward...
Damn great shots guys. Seems like an awesome lens but at the same time you and wera's skills behind the camera helps a lot! Dude how's it like in Vietnam? Any videos coming soon from there?
Aww thanks guys! I was planning on doing some more 'travel style' videos but I'm so busy atm with work stuff that I hardly ever have the time. Sometimes when you're abroad it's nice just to turn the camera off and enjoy it if you know what I mean?
Great video!! How does the lens perform at low light? I take a lot of portrait shots during sunset/night in the middle of a city. I’m hoping the blur/bokeh will still pop and look great!
Looks really sharp indeed. Did you edit any of these photos? The difference in price between the 1.4 and the 1.8 is crazy, even with other brands, and while some are worth, the difference in quality doesn't seem that huge
Yeah they were lightly edited with LR and PS but nothing major, just color correcting and touching up skin. For sure, when it comes to lenses, the law of diminishing returns definitely comes into play. From our experience something that is double the price of something else, it really doesn't mean it's twice as good. At least with camera equipment!
Is the 85mm a good lens to take full body portraits while maintaining a good bokeh? I have the sigma 30mm and it’s great for half body or facial portraits but I want a lens that can make up for full body portraits and small family shots with good bokeh.
Yes, absolutely, but just keep in mind you will need to step back quite a bit so it's the best for indoors or if you don't have much room to move back.
Oh haha we actually have both. We have a review of the Tamron earlier this year. They're both great but I'd say the Tamron is more versatile and a better first buy. Get the 85 afterwards, that would be my advice :)
This lens is dust and moisture resistant for anyone wondering. From Sony; “A sealed dust and moisture resistant design provides extra protection and ensures reliable operation in challenging environments. Shoot with confidence in light rain or windy conditions.”
It's hard to say. The sigma is a great lens and the 24-70 is going to be a lot more flexible. If you're planning on doing other types of photography other than portraits the 24-70 might be a better all around lens. But the 85mm is perfect for what it does and you can't go wrong with the price.
You're using a crop sensor Sony right now right? They're still pretty amazing in my opinion! My mate has an A6400 and honestly I was so impressed with it!
Sharp pics from the song 1.8!!! Compare to the canon 1.8 wow. Slightly bigger. ..that's a clean lens I would definitely pick this up for a Sony lens!!! Btw I like that Kaws Tshirt
Odd that you were browsing the Sigma 12-24 on amazon. But yeah the sigma 85 ends up being twice the price of the sony. the 12-24 is almost 3 times! Crazy
@@RudyVisuals great, i’ll be waiting. Btw if you want to make comparison, in term of comparing with sony 85mm f1.8, there’s a negative key point of viltrox compared to sony (from some other review i saw) , so maybe you can also highight this test to confirm if it’s true : using eye focus on object/people moving toward camera, when it lost focus, it’s a bit slower to regain the focus back compared to sony. So when using burst shoot of someone walking toward camera, you may find more blurry frames in viltrox compared to sony. This is the only thing so far that viltrox lost to sony. Other than that, viltrox has same image quality, but better bokeh, better build quality, better price/value. Even at low light ,viltrox has better af speed.
Oh that is actually really cheap brand new. I found it was cheaper in VN as well compared to UK prices. Might be something to do with taxes or something, but at that price it makes it even stronger to recommend.
85mm because i shoot automotive photography and the 85mm focal length compresses the car and really brings out the body lines without distorting the car.
if your eye is set to a7Riii or a7Riv, I can definitely see the pic is on the softer side at 1.8 (definitely not crystal clear)....I would say buy this if you are just keeping a prime as a secondary lens...but if your bread and butter are this or if you are a serious enthusiast, which means you are anyway going to use 1.8 max all the time (cause you already have better 2.8 zoom lenses)....this is not the lens for you. I checked a lot of sample images, nothing is really impressive (guessing you have a7riii or a7riv, any lower end camera, this lens is great). Get the Samyung 85 1.4 (with the extender) or Sigma 85 1.4 (you have to correct the distortion in the post though). Cause after buying only thing matter is the image quality, not the value (I did the mistake ...don't fall for the "VALUE" review if you are a serious enthusiast).
Beautiful images of lovely women... I have the Sony 85mm f/1.8 lens and I love it! I am expecting my second Covid-19 Moderna vaccine shot in three days and two weeks after that I will feel confident enough to resume portrait photography again. Then the 85mm f/1.8 lens will live on my A7iii!

£549 is a BUDGET lens?? Lmao I hate how expensive camera gear is...but wow these photos and videos look so good. I'm so jealous of the eye AF on sony cameras :'(
Sony glass is expensive! It's definitely a budget price for them haha. Honestly I don't want to rub salt in the wounds, but I don't think I could go back to a camera that doesn't have eye AF.

amazing the bokeh this one makes. the photo and video shot with the model with the red dress is so beautiful!!
Thanks! What are you guys shooting with these days?
So happy I found your channel! You are fantastic! Can't wait for more. The crisp images you get out of the 35mm make me appreciate mine even more.

Glad it was helpful! Hope you enjoy it and the A7III too!
gotta love the 85mm!
I have been using my 85 for landscape, but with a close subject
For sure! I think it's our favorite focal length, at least for portraits anyway!
Just purchased this lens.

Vietnam is one of the countries we admire the most when it comes to coronavirus! Happy you are safe there
It really is an amazing country, at this point it's become like my 2nd home haha. Hope you can both visit here one day soon!

Thank you! I feel so much safer in VN than I would be in the UK honestly, I'm happy to wait it out here until the pandemic situation calms down!.
Such an awesome, sharp lens! Hands down best bang for your buck! 💯
Couldn't agree more! I think it's my favorite lens on the Sony right now!
beast for potrait :D - but gonna be tough for cinematic unless w gimbal
Agreed, with the gimbal it's better, but with the A7III's in body stabilization I was still able to get pretty useable shots!
Great video!! How does the lens perform at low light? I take a lot of portrait shots during sunset/night in the middle of a city. I’m hoping the blur/bokeh will still pop and look great!
Still love ours to this day! It works great in low light especially if you're using it with a newer sony body so got no complaints there! :)

From a price wise please, do you recomend it over the sigma 24-70 ... f 2.8 ?
It's hard to say. The sigma is a great lens and the 24-70 is going to be a lot more flexible. If you're planning on doing other types of photography other than portraits the 24-70 might be a better all around lens. But the 85mm is perfect for what it does and you can't go wrong with the price.

Have you ever compared with viltrox 85mm? Many review said it has same image quality but $200 cheaper so become best budget 85mm.
We are trying to review the Viltrox 85mm atm, waiting for them to send us a copy of the lens!

Awesome, thank you so much!
What's your favorite focal length to shoot with? Let us know!
Personally I like wide shots, they always look more epic to me but I'm really into landscapes!
We need to step up our landscape game!
50mm because it's the only lens I have 😁😂
I like wide angle lenses, maybe 24mm
85mm because i shoot automotive photography and the 85mm focal length compresses the car and really brings out the body lines without distorting the car.
Can I use this portrait and landscape ?
You definitely can use it for landscapes too. Google "landscapes with an 85mm" to see some great examples.
I have this lens and it's fantastic.
Agreed! It's a beast for the price honestly!
So is it weather sealed or not?
Yes it is, according to the Sony website but I would still not recommend taking it out and using it in heavy rain/snow etc.
Amazing lens, so sharp with great bokeh effect, very good review.
Thank you my friend :)
This lens looks very sharp. I love those dresses too, is it the traditional style of vietnam?
Yes they are called Ao Dai and children and Men also wear them. They are very beautiful!
Nice vid loved it keep it up and stay connected!!!
Thanks and sure
