How I Study in Medical School

  • Hey everyone! This video was a STRUGGLE! It was so difficult to film because the way I study is so simple, yet it's difficult to explain the process. The material that I'm currently learning doesn't really require (imo) a bunch of different study tools to be successful. Like I said, that will likely change over time; however, this is how I am currently studying as a first year medical student.
    It's pretty basic! I'm sorry if y'all were expecting something grand, hehe. But i am not that proud of how I did this video.. It was executed poorly, but I know you guys were dying to know how I study.
    Thank you all so much for hangin out with me. I look forward to chatting with you guys in the comments!

    Method:
    Take notes from presentation on the outline made of the learning objectives before she goes through the streamed lecture at 2x speed.
    Take those notes you made in step 1 and put the missing information onto them while watching lectures at 2x/in the actual lecture or jsut reading the presentation indepth.
    Going to lab to study things like msucles.
    Drawing diagrams and taking herself through the content by talking to herself.
    Watch videos even though.
    Review the prior notes.

    Honestly, I just started med school too. And I can’t emphasize how much more I get out of a lecture when I skip it and listen to it online. I’d rather rest and sleep, or go exercise in the AM like you do, and then spend the day studying. I have the exact same routine as you, and it paid of last semester! :) so I’m sure you’ll rock it! Good luck. ☺️☺️
    Quick tip for finals:
    - when you’re prepping, make a document organising things you know you won’t remember easily (types of glut receptors, harder muscle names, endocrine disorders that have a name that doesn’t work exactly the way you think they do) that is easily accessible. I then read it quickly right before I fall asleep and that way after several nights of skimming the same document a couple times you know it. :)
    Good luck!

    • @MHSMagicLuver
      @MHSMagicLuver 4 года назад +15

      The Fregoso Family I’m in PA school rather than med school but I assume it’s the same. They don’t care about anything from high school. Need to have a good college GPA, good test scores (MCAT for med and GRE for PA). Also need to make sure you have the prerequisites. Any major. In PA school we have the additional of needing shadowing and direct patient care hours (usually 2000 or more). Both are of course very competitive but what really matters is college, not high school.
      They also only want your college transcripts not high school.

    • @aaronfregoso3239
      @aaronfregoso3239 4 года назад +4

      Lisa thankyou so much! I’m in high school now and I’m really on such a mix what I want to do after high school and college 🤔i just kinda wanted to know her high school stuff just to see if I’m “”good”” enough to pursue a medical future

      LavishBecky thank you both soo much for the support , I’m just really scared to pursue medical school in my future , I’m afraid I won’t have enough money to pay for anything and I’m also overweight and don’t know any overweight doctors 🥼☹️

    • @aaronfregoso3239
      @aaronfregoso3239 4 года назад +2

      LavishBecky ok thank you so much , I’ve never actually had someone that’s tried to support me and tell me not to be scared ! And you don’t even know me ❤️

    • @MHSMagicLuver
      @MHSMagicLuver 4 года назад +6

      LavishBecky yes. I agree. Just make sure not to goof off in college. If you want something, you can achieve it. It’s not about being particularly smart, it’s moreso having the drive. Good luck!
      Edit: it took me 5 years to get into PA school with a 3.6 GPA. Most people would have given up. But I didn’t. I pushed through and that also helped me get through PA school (currently in clinical year) because it is the hardest thing I have done in my entire life (and sometimes I’m not sure if i can do it) but I keep thinking of the end

    This helped me and I'm not even in medical school. I go to an all online school to finish my Bachelors in Criminal Justice. With online school you basically teach yourself and when you were talking about going over learning objectives and days you skip lectures, you are basically teaching yourself, just using the powerpoint as a supplement. Definitely motivating for sure!

    One thing that REALLY helps me start a day strong is by prepping my to-DOs the night before. I have a small pocket notebook I keep in my back pocket at all times so I can constantly view my daily tasks, update, adjust, etc on the fly. I also have a wall calendar where I rip out each month and tape them next to each other on the wall. I then fill in key deadlines (exams, papers, etc) and highlight the border of the date so I can always have a quick glance idea of where I stand, time until key deadlines, etc. It gives me full optics and control over my work.
    At the end of the day: I sit on my couch and review all that was done that day, how much is left, and then prioritize the following day. I then look up at my wall of months lol and adjust those to-DOs and tasks accordingly. Has done wonders for me!!

    Previewing isn’t something I’ve done before, but I think I’ll start, it sounds beneficial! Something that I do and that helps me stay busy rather than getting distracted is rotating what I’m studying or doing. I’ve found that if I study for two hours and then rotate to maybe read some papers for research or plan experiments for an hour, and then grade for an hour, I’m much fresher when I go back to studying. It also gives my brain some time to digest the material from before without overwhelming myself! Thanks for sharing Rachel!

    • @RachelSouthard
      @RachelSouthard  4 года назад

      All i recommend it a laptop at minimum. I definitely have some overkill with my 3 devices (ipad, laptop, desktop), but I make good use of them all :) A laptop is really all you need, but the iPad is pretty helpful for having electronic, handwritten notes.

    *******UPDATE MED SCHOOL FINALIST
    STARTED FEW WEEKS AGO ❤
    Y'ALL GOT THIS.
    4th year medical student here, I'm 21.. just took my second part of forensic and toxicology exam today and I did good after fully believing I'll leave my paper empty, got 19 more days of finals in 4th year and off to my 5th and final year.
    I haven't eaten or slept good or more than 2 hours intermittently throughout the day in approximately 2 months and I won't for another 19 days, but that's fine, push through y'all, don't be a victim or of the process, enjoy the process.
    Planning to start a RUclips channel in the near future as well, I just don't have that much time rn, anyways goodluck to all of you, pray for me as well I'll do a score update here!! x

      @lolthatstough1301 4 года назад +3

      @@jesusdiedforoursins yea where I live it's 5 years
      Then I can take international board exams like American steps or British mrcpch and equate my certificates.
      I'd rather that than 8 years of college lol

      @@ayashaabneh8406 well I don't live in the US or any European country
      I live in Africa 😊
      Most arab medical schools (no the curriculum isn't in Arabic, at least mine isn't) are five years, sometimes six.

      A med student chicka I’m not sure where in the Arab world you are, but in the Gulf countries, it’s 6 years, I taught lessons there, and all Dental and Medical schools are 6 years with a joint first 2 years with Medical and Dental.

    i know making these videos is fun for you so i was wondering if you can add in random facts that you learned in your lectures or lab in random pop ups on your screen during your videos, maybe it can be an other way to retain some information but maybe not bc ur crushing it so far

    Wow 16k already! You had like 5k a couple weeks ago:) Also, how do you stay focused while studying? I find myself after hour 2 of studying when reading or watching a video my mind starts to drift and I have no idea what I just watched or read. Thank you!

      wahhH! Right?!
      Try the Pomodoro technique! I've heard it helps a lot with studying.
      I personally stay pretty focused while studying--idk how! I just strap down when I need to so i can have time to film/edit videos and go to the gym. So when it's work time, it's work time!

    In anatomy studying it's so useful to have MINDSET like when you hear muscles of the forearm you ask yourself some questions
    Front or back (flexors or extensors)
    Superficial or deep
    And for instance if superficial flexors you say we have FIVE before trying to remember it
    This way of remembering makes it so easier
    Just try it and see it yourself
