How I Study in Medical School

- Hey everyone! This video was a STRUGGLE! It was so difficult to film because the way I study is so simple, yet it's difficult to explain the process. The material that I'm currently learning doesn't really require (imo) a bunch of different study tools to be successful. Like I said, that will likely change over time; however, this is how I am currently studying as a first year medical student.
It's pretty basic! I'm sorry if y'all were expecting something grand, hehe. But i am not that proud of how I did this video.. It was executed poorly, but I know you guys were dying to know how I study.
Thank you all so much for hangin out with me. I look forward to chatting with you guys in the comments!

Method:
Take notes from presentation on the outline made of the learning objectives before she goes through the streamed lecture at 2x speed.
Take those notes you made in step 1 and put the missing information onto them while watching lectures at 2x/in the actual lecture or jsut reading the presentation indepth.
Going to lab to study things like msucles.
Drawing diagrams and taking herself through the content by talking to herself.
Watch videos even though.
Review the prior notes.
Posting a new video tomorrow! So you should make this comment for my new video hehe

L DT I’m crying. 💕
Am I the only one who gets Rory from Gilmore girls vibes
Saba Log omg I was thinking that the entire time! She sounds exactly like her!
Yessssss!
Omg I commented the same thing on a different video, the vibes are so similar!
I have been thinking that too!!
Mer Rod FOR SURE
Honestly, I just started med school too. And I can’t emphasize how much more I get out of a lecture when I skip it and listen to it online. I’d rather rest and sleep, or go exercise in the AM like you do, and then spend the day studying. I have the exact same routine as you, and it paid of last semester! :) so I’m sure you’ll rock it! Good luck. ☺️☺️
Quick tip for finals:
- when you’re prepping, make a document organising things you know you won’t remember easily (types of glut receptors, harder muscle names, endocrine disorders that have a name that doesn’t work exactly the way you think they do) that is easily accessible. I then read it quickly right before I fall asleep and that way after several nights of skimming the same document a couple times you know it. :)
Good luck!
oooh! Thank you for all the tips!
almost 2 years ago, u didnt get the result u wanted in the MCAT exam... and here u r!! ur such an inspiration!!!!! KEEP GOING RACHEL!!
honestly, kudos to you for putting out another video this week while being in your program AND waking up as early as you do! haha you're amazing
Sara Ann when I bomb my exam and I’m crying in the next vlog, y’all know why😂😂😂
@@RachelSouthard nooooo omg don't say that haha. you'll still kill it, dw!
Omg yessss the video we have all been waiting for and it is as amazing as expected!!!!
I’m two weeks in to my first year of vet school and we started with the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the forelimb in anatomy, too! It’s super interesting seeing how similar and how different the two professional schools are!
I absolutely love your videos! So fresh, so inspiring!
I admire you so much!!!! You should be proud of yourself because not many people are brave enough to do what you’re doing 💕
This was helpful! It’s good to see variations in how people study to see if I’d want to try it out. So yah, thanks! 💕
Love your realistic/honest approach!! This is basically what I do, with the exception of writing out the objectives (will definitely try that from now on)!! I’m a chiropractic student (people will feel how they feel about that lol) and our course load is soooooo intense so I have been trying to narrow down my study methods. Thank you for the video!
Thank you so much for this and your hardwork putting up so many videos!! I will definitely be applying this for my next semester 🤗
i’m a second year med student and it’s kinda awesome to see someone else going through the same thing😊
Yes!!! I’ve been waiting for this... thanks for sharing! Will def be using your techniques staring school this week ☺️
Hey Rachael just came across ur channel and found it so cool because I’ve been considering the health science program as my undergrad at western! I love your videos, they’re so inspiring! Let’s continue to make the world a better place and help others out❤️
Rachel! I love to see your progress and congrats on your recent youtube success! From watching just a few of your videos you deserve it!!
I'm studying business but you really motivate me so much! Such a smart and generous person!
You are a great inspiration for us. My daughter is going to U.K. med school. She is watching your videos for study ideas. Keep going! You are a great human!
It has been always helpful for me to look at Mcqs about the subject to check what things I have missed or I need to concentrate more on it.
Looking forward to meet you someday and find as outstanding doctor
This was awesome, not in medical school, but I appreciate your method of studying...never thought to take the learning objectives, rephrase them into questions and answer those questions in order to efficiently maximize knowledge retention. Awesome idea! Wishing you a successful semester! 👍
You are amazing. I don't know how you do it. Just keep going and know that whatever you set your mind to, you can do it. Thanks for being such a great role model and inspiration for everyone!
Honestly, this is amazing! A new semester is starting for me and I have been trying to develop a study plan for it go well. This video helped me so much! thank you so much, I really hope you become an amazing doctor one day, good luck!
Just wanted to say that this has actually been one of the most helpful and real study videos despite you saying you think it wasn’t helpful:( this is exactly what I needed to get my day going!!❤️
Thanks for sharing! I am currently a first medical student and we use Anki really heavily! It's a great tool to use to keep up with your past material as new material is thrown at you. I have seen you use it in past videos so maybe i think an updated video would be awesome to show how you incorporate anki in your routine :)
such an inspiration! also you’re breathtakingly beautiful! love you sooo much ❤️❤️❤️
Hi! I’m only 13 but my goal is to get into medical school when I’m older and you’re so inspirational and pretty and I love your videos! Good luck this year!!
Love your videos! Can you make a vid about your undergrad years? Talk about your major, gpa (if you’re comfortable with sharing it), extracurriculars, jobs.
Yes!
Okay! thank you for the suggestion! Adding it to my list
Hi! Could you do an apartment tour so we could learn more about you? Or a morning routine video? I also really like your day in the life videos its super motivating watching somebody else study cause it gets me to actually study for my own classes!
Thank for for this wonderful video Rachel! I’m applying this cycle so let’s see how it goes
Is there anyway u could talk about your high school years , your gpa , your act score, your favorite classes ? Like if u agree
The Fregoso Family I’m in PA school rather than med school but I assume it’s the same. They don’t care about anything from high school. Need to have a good college GPA, good test scores (MCAT for med and GRE for PA). Also need to make sure you have the prerequisites. Any major. In PA school we have the additional of needing shadowing and direct patient care hours (usually 2000 or more). Both are of course very competitive but what really matters is college, not high school.
They also only want your college transcripts not high school.
Lisa thankyou so much! I’m in high school now and I’m really on such a mix what I want to do after high school and college 🤔i just kinda wanted to know her high school stuff just to see if I’m “”good”” enough to pursue a medical future
LavishBecky thank you both soo much for the support , I’m just really scared to pursue medical school in my future , I’m afraid I won’t have enough money to pay for anything and I’m also overweight and don’t know any overweight doctors 🥼☹️
LavishBecky ok thank you so much , I’ve never actually had someone that’s tried to support me and tell me not to be scared ! And you don’t even know me ❤️
LavishBecky yes. I agree. Just make sure not to goof off in college. If you want something, you can achieve it. It’s not about being particularly smart, it’s moreso having the drive. Good luck!
Edit: it took me 5 years to get into PA school with a 3.6 GPA. Most people would have given up. But I didn’t. I pushed through and that also helped me get through PA school (currently in clinical year) because it is the hardest thing I have done in my entire life (and sometimes I’m not sure if i can do it) but I keep thinking of the end
This was very useful. I struggle with finding the best studying methods. I feel most studying methods take too long in one subject and it makes me fall back on other classes. I’m def going to try this method of using the learning objectives as a way to prepare myself.
I’m 3rd year med student and it’s both funny and scary at the same time 😃 Like when u showed those anatomy notes I was like damn I remember how hard was it back then. Keep up with the good work Rachel! ❤️
This helped me and I'm not even in medical school. I go to an all online school to finish my Bachelors in Criminal Justice. With online school you basically teach yourself and when you were talking about going over learning objectives and days you skip lectures, you are basically teaching yourself, just using the powerpoint as a supplement. Definitely motivating for sure!
Yay! Im excited! I’m always on my phone on the right time getting notified 🤘🏼
Andrea Romero meant to be!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yay!! So glad u uploaded this!
Applying for this upcoming cycle, and I’m nervous yet excited, so thank you for this. God bless you and God bless your journey 🙏🏾
Girl you GOT THIS!!!!
I’ve been anticipating this video for so long and it’s just in time before the semester starts🙏🏾
Yasss girl. Hope it helps you out!
congrats on medical school. I felt in my experiences (i am now a third year) that previewing helped more if I went to class. but if I didn't go to class id use the recorded lecture as my first exposure/preview because of the options of rewinding to fully understand stuff lol.
Rachel I am so happy 😁 that u put this up
Before starting my med school I wanted to plan n this is ‘helpful ‘
Thank you so much 😊
omg!Good luck! :D so exciting!
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 Im obsessed with your videos!!
Keep up the good work Rachel!
Thank you so much!! I loved the video!!!🔥🔥🔥Thank you for sharing your method and taking time from your busy schedule We are praying for you to pass all your exams!🙏🙏🙏
LMAO seriously please pray for me. I'm gonna need em
I cant wait to get into medical school...keep posting videos when you can it motivates me an im sure many others..
Omg dude i fricken love your videos!!!!
Jaelynn Hernandez dude I freakin love YOU
This was honestly so helpful! Thank you
I studied very similarly during my first few terms! Then BAM pathology comes at you with 50 objectives per powerpoint and now I'm just... UGH!
Techniques totally change and change often. I'm glad you mentioned that :)
I am also 1st year in Medicine. I also go through the learning objectives but I lose track of them which is why I have a hard time following them. I do find my subjects for now ok tho since I am a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science, which some of my subjects in the past are very similar if not very familiar to my subjects now. I think that's a great advantage for me so I better not waste it. God bless you more! I always hope and pray we can win in this chapter of our lives.
Just discovered your channel
I am a new Studytuber and loved your content 😍
you motivate me to do better in school. I'm in the eighth grade and I wanna be an OB/GYN!! ilysm
me too! i'm excited yet nervous!
One thing that REALLY helps me start a day strong is by prepping my to-DOs the night before. I have a small pocket notebook I keep in my back pocket at all times so I can constantly view my daily tasks, update, adjust, etc on the fly. I also have a wall calendar where I rip out each month and tape them next to each other on the wall. I then fill in key deadlines (exams, papers, etc) and highlight the border of the date so I can always have a quick glance idea of where I stand, time until key deadlines, etc. It gives me full optics and control over my work.
At the end of the day: I sit on my couch and review all that was done that day, how much is left, and then prioritize the following day. I then look up at my wall of months lol and adjust those to-DOs and tasks accordingly. Has done wonders for me!!
New subbie, binged watched all your videos ! Thanks for being so transparent ! You’re so beautiful and amazing!
Yay! Thank you Kim!
Previewing isn’t something I’ve done before, but I think I’ll start, it sounds beneficial! Something that I do and that helps me stay busy rather than getting distracted is rotating what I’m studying or doing. I’ve found that if I study for two hours and then rotate to maybe read some papers for research or plan experiments for an hour, and then grade for an hour, I’m much fresher when I go back to studying. It also gives my brain some time to digest the material from before without overwhelming myself! Thanks for sharing Rachel!
It definitely helps. Give it a shot and see what happens :)
Try the pomodoro technique for studying!
Thank you so much! off to get to them learning objectives !
I go to medical school starting next year I am saving up and getting all my debt paid off. I feel and know I am called to this field and I am so excited
I just started medical school and I am really excited to follow your journey and live mine.
this was really insightful love ya.
Omg i smile every time you post

You are a huge inspiration!! I love seeing your channel grow. Keep it up! You got this! You are capable of anything you set your mind to ❤️
As are you :)
You’re super gorgeous 😍 Wonderful vlog and I can’t wait to watch many more awesome vids from you ❤️♥️ you’re really making me fall in love with med school 🤭
LOVE your videos.....literally binge watched them. Just wondering how you were able to juggle ECs/volunteering and school during your undergrad
keep up the videos, love em !
Hi Rachel! love the video. I was kind of hoping that you could explain your undergrad? or how you prepared for pre-req’s for this program and such? thanks!
Make a video of how u knew you wanted to be a doctor , and how u got to medical school !❤️
Thank you for making this!!
Been waiting for this
I discovered your videos a couple weeks ago and I am so happy with how much your channel has blown up!!! You deserve it. Keep going hard. You really inspire me to do the same. :)
It's insane! Thank you thank you thank you!
i do the same things as you tbh, medical school will shove tons of information on your face so memorizing isn't everything, deep understanding and silent thinking is very important to let the information sink in. i feel like i found my study twin haha
Your videos are so real & your study tips/methods are very practical. Love watching you!
This reminds me that when I started my degree 15 years ago, streaming and recorded lectures weren’t a thing, and a lot of material we had to get it from the university copier, which was basically photocopies. Pretty much all we had online was the PowerPoint presentation if there was one!
i love your videos oh my goodness !!!
that's honestly it lol, very similar to how I also study. However as more content occurs and you need to recall earlier weeks using active recall such as, Anki decks or Quilt is really useful for review.
It’s reaaaally helpful! Thanks 🥰
‘Amazon pencil thing’ 😄 Rachel you’re awesome I’m so happy I stumbled across your channel
I'm so fancy lmao
Keep it up 🙌 dont feel forced to blog if it ever becomes too much. Good luck in the pre clerkship phase ✊
Thank you Ricky! I appreciate it!
Why are you such a mood 😭
Hi lovely, i adore you channel so much!!
I’m in my first year of pre medical school. so i’m just starting.
Ive been more interested in learning about D.O. doctors recently.
I was wondering if you could make a video about your experience with MD and D.O. doctors, and why you decided to go the D.O. route?
I look up to you so much!! Keep the amazing videos up, you’re in the home stretch and i’m rooting for you!!💕✨
hopefully u still check comments on older videos from time to time💛
Studying for my DAT now and western is a top choice (gator alum as well!) I can’t wait to get to dental school this gives me so much motivation! Could you possibly do a study with me? I love throwing those types of videos when I’m studying too. Great content keep it coming!
You should check out Smilesforyoo He’s a dental youtuber from WesternU :)
Love you Rachel ❤️
awesome process! Previewing and focusing on lecture objectives is what I do too and it really works!
You and your positivity 🖤
I honestly just like watching your videos lol, because I will be in your position one day, but I am undebated on going to medical or pa school
Hi I'm going to start my medical studies within a week 😊any pre- preparation needed before starting??BTW your videos are so so good . Keep it up And all the best for future
I’m doing medical science in Australia, you’re stuff is very similar to mine - the study routine can be a killer
although we don’t have anatomy labs at night, i always start uni at the very earliest 9am and finish at the latest of 5! crazy
Jasmine Sharpe hi jasmine, I was thinking applying for my med school in Australia. Do you have any advice and also I’ll like to return back probably for my residency. Do you know anyone who went through that path or any advice at all. Thank you
Could you please make a video outlining all the materials you would recommend having before medical school? (Mostly the technology that you have and the programs on your technology)
All i recommend it a laptop at minimum. I definitely have some overkill with my 3 devices (ipad, laptop, desktop), but I make good use of them all :) A laptop is really all you need, but the iPad is pretty helpful for having electronic, handwritten notes.
You go girl. Drinkin a beer watching this. Step2ck got me by the balls rn. But. Hey. Gotta love that we med students have this unique journey!
Lmao! Get itttt!
Would love to know your workout routine! :)
Is it just me or does she reminds you of jennifer López?!
i am starting high school in less then a week and i want to be a pediatric er nurse but this will help me when i do go to medical school
*******UPDATE MED SCHOOL FINALIST
STARTED FEW WEEKS AGO ❤
Y'ALL GOT THIS.
4th year medical student here, I'm 21.. just took my second part of forensic and toxicology exam today and I did good after fully believing I'll leave my paper empty, got 19 more days of finals in 4th year and off to my 5th and final year.
I haven't eaten or slept good or more than 2 hours intermittently throughout the day in approximately 2 months and I won't for another 19 days, but that's fine, push through y'all, don't be a victim or of the process, enjoy the process.
Planning to start a RUclips channel in the near future as well, I just don't have that much time rn, anyways goodluck to all of you, pray for me as well I'll do a score update here!! x
A med student chicka 5th year?
@@jesusdiedforoursins yea where I live it's 5 years
Then I can take international board exams like American steps or British mrcpch and equate my certificates.
I'd rather that than 8 years of college lol
What is the name of your university??
@@ayashaabneh8406 well I don't live in the US or any European country
I live in Africa 😊
Most arab medical schools (no the curriculum isn't in Arabic, at least mine isn't) are five years, sometimes six.
A med student chicka I’m not sure where in the Arab world you are, but in the Gulf countries, it’s 6 years, I taught lessons there, and all Dental and Medical schools are 6 years with a joint first 2 years with Medical and Dental.
I love your videos, you inspire me! Can you share with us any info on how to pay for medical school? I want to eventually go to dental school really bad but the cost is daunting
Queen! Screen recordings! Yes!
YASSS!!!!!! ya girl is tryin her best over here. lmao
i'll try!
thanks for the advice will follow it for sure
i know making these videos is fun for you so i was wondering if you can add in random facts that you learned in your lectures or lab in random pop ups on your screen during your videos, maybe it can be an other way to retain some information but maybe not bc ur crushing it so far
i love your videos keep up the good work girl ! i wanted to know wich ipad is this one? and wich one you recommend for med school. thanks
Hi! Thank you, this video really helped me. Do you typically read the books or just focus on lectures? Thanks!
Wow 16k already! You had like 5k a couple weeks ago:) Also, how do you stay focused while studying? I find myself after hour 2 of studying when reading or watching a video my mind starts to drift and I have no idea what I just watched or read. Thank you!
wahhH! Right?!
Try the Pomodoro technique! I've heard it helps a lot with studying.
I personally stay pretty focused while studying--idk how! I just strap down when I need to so i can have time to film/edit videos and go to the gym. So when it's work time, it's work time!
How do you keep your skin so flawless even after having such a busy schedule? 😃
Can you do a video on how you take notes on your macbook? I think it would be very helpful
In anatomy studying it's so useful to have MINDSET like when you hear muscles of the forearm you ask yourself some questions
Front or back (flexors or extensors)
Superficial or deep
And for instance if superficial flexors you say we have FIVE before trying to remember it
This way of remembering makes it so easier
Just try it and see it yourself
