Great topic. I suffer from (what I consider) moderate chronic pain from osteoarthritis. I am a retired blue collar guy who has worked and played outdoors my whole life. Fifteen years ago I suffered serious damage to my stomach lining due to over use of ibuprofen. Now I manage my chronic pain with diet (avoiding inflammatory foods and eating a "blue zone" diet) and exercise. It took me a couple of years to get to this point. I thank Bob, Brad and Chris for pointing me in the right direction. I only use ibuprofen minimally and only when necessary. I have not taken any in the past 6 weeks. I live in a cold damp climate (south shore of Lake Ontario) and walk, on average 5⅓ miles daily snow, sleet, rain & sun if there is any. Thanks to you all. You changed my life.
@@garfgo I would consider my pain to have been moderate, some days worse. This is what works for me. I do my best to avoid gluten, processed sugar, simple carbs, processed foods, and fatty red meats. Will I occasionally eat pizza and cake at my grandkids birthday parties? You bet I do, but in moderation. I do have minor pain daily, but it is more like discomfort and very tolerable. Diet, some morning stretches, strength training with resistance bands and weights under 4 lbs 2-3 times a week. Walking and cycling. For several years I have followed Bob and Brad's stretching & exercise recommendations which really helped. Not until I finally dialed in my diet did I feel like a new man. Now if I have pain I will first go to ice or heat before considering a pill. I am not 100% pain free but I can easily live with these results. Hope this helps. Exactly, I recently have been dealing with wisdom teeth pain. And I've been taking generic brand Tylenol for about a week. Along with rinsing out my mouth with warm/cool water mixed with ten drops of tea tree oil to help with the inflammation. An ice pack to also help with the pain. I quit taking the pills two days ago, which I was taking 3 times a day in the beganing, and switched to taking them 2 times a day. And even though there was some pain. And before I quit I only took two tablets one time a day. At the end the pain was pretty bad, and I needed to let the pain go ahead and do its thing. This way I would not become dependent on the pills. My ciropractor once told me you need to feel the pain to help you heal better. This way one will not have to rely on pills, and let the body heal its self. And if the pain in my mouth continues I can still rinse out my mouth with the tea tree oil solution I mentioned above, any time without any side effects. And thankfully the tea tree oil is helping me out a lot. And drinking cups of roasted herbal tea helps too.
I'm glad to see this video subject matter, as I have recently suffered from an Ibuprofen OD by taking a ~normal dosage for too many days in a row. Started feeling extreme nausea, thought food poisoning immediately. I'd been eating those Hall's C vitamins for a week, and sharing them at work sometimes(a maz on), and some workers on the line assumed & asserted that I must have vitamin C poisoning. I looked up symptoms and found Ibuprofen list of symptoms. I think I had all but 2 of them and one of those 2 was Coma! So I stopped immediately. I was going between a 400mg amount and a 600mg amount that had been prescribed for me previously for my Gout pain. I was working and secretly limping into work on a flare-up for about 2 weeks and didn't say anything because I've already been fired when my gout made me unreliable in the eyes of employers/managers in the past. I think it was day ten or eleven that the symptoms overtook me. But you know you do your best and all that, and most importantly it's an excellent lesson that can be learned from my mistake. I haven't yet seen the video, but will watch it as soon as possible. Thanks very much. I'm going to talk to a doctor soon about other important issues, but typing this out has made me realize I should list all of my physical symptoms out for her. I have a liver spot, did liver damage occur, i wonder..... I keep learning.
This is so good! Thank you very much, fellas, as always. 7:27 hits the anti-od numbers. Most pills that I could get a hold of to treat this can kill me in large dosage, but it would be excruciating and horrific as my body shuts down slowly. no fun, only pain. Very good to know now! wish it wasn't firsthand knowledge lol
I take 1 Aleve every day for arthritis pain and also Tylenol. I have for quite a while now. I don’t have stomach issues though as I always take it with food in the morning and I also drink a lot of water (2-3 litters a day), I had heard that helped with possible kidney issues from taking ibuprofen. Thanks for this informative video 🙂
I come from a country that mainly uses paracetamol for common ails and fever. Very rarely did I take ibuprofen even when I lived in the US. But because of my bad case of menorrhagia, ibuprofen has given me some relief and back some control of my life. To me, the effects on other ails are pretty mild when I use ibuprofen but it is very effective for managing my menorrhagia. Talking about NSAIDs, I've had bad back for quite a while (coupled with what I suspect is fibromyalgia) and working to resolve it, but the pain can be so overwhelming, I can't even move around in bed without having excruciating pain sometimes (strangely, extremely bad before and during my periods). I've been recommended this patch with 30mg ketoprofen and I was so surprised that I can literally the relief when I use it on the back n pelvic areas. Although it is far from 100% relief, or even 70%, but it does help quite a bit and I sleep better. I do hope that as I slowly resolve my issues with my back, I will be able to wean off those patches.
I used it for years with menstrual pain. Worked great . Had endometriosis, and was eventually spayed, but it injured my kidneys. I developed high blood pressure and increased cholesterol. Went to a kidney specialist who told me ibuprofen did the damage. Caught it in time but almost destroyed my kidneys. Just be aware chronic nsaid use will creep up on you eventually. I was in my 40's. Just be careful...
I took max doses of Ibuprofen round the clock for many years. I finally just got off it this year. I do still take naprosyn sodium round the clock. But not as much as I took of the Ibuprofen. I felt like my body somewhat adjusted to be dependent on the Ibuprofen to regulate pain. Even though it's not adictive, the body can still rely on it. I'm glad to finally be off.
@@stevenkelby2169 I was having a lot of kidney pain. I do have chronic kidney stones and have had kidney infections, so the pain could be from that. But I know that taking large doses of Ibuprofen long term is not good for the kidneys. I was finally starting to get a little bit of indigestion, too. I knew for years that I should quit. So, I finally did. Though, like I said, not without substituting with Naprosyn, which is almost as bad.
Someone in my family took hospital-level doses of ibuprofen for several decades for Migraines, and this is the cause of her colon problems today, something to do with the acid.
I took ibuprofen at hospital doses for 10 years after being hit by a bus. The ensuing acid reflux eventually gave me Barrette’s esophagus, which means the cells have changed to pre-cancerous. There’s a medication the doctors prescribed to protect those cells from becoming cancerous that works great, but it costs $800/month, even with Medicare it’s $250-$300/month. Because I can’t afford that medicine, I have to take an older medication that doesn’t stop acid reflux fully, which means I will eventually get cancer of the esophagus. All because I was hit by a bus.
@@cherylmcnutt9905 I guess you've tried lifting the head of your bed up by a few inches, it works quite well. Can't they use laser to burn those cells off?
Unless the inflammation is very severe, I wish I had sucked it up and dealt with it. Inflammation and this goes for a fever too, but that’s the body’s reaction to send oxygen or whatever healing the body needs and ibuprofen is just turning off the body’s natural cure mechanism. I learned all these things much too late and had many surgeries with some not even being necessary. (One surgeon is in prison and I didn’t know about until I was at a convention in Florida) I was just looking for a weather channel and I came across the TV show AMERICAN GREED and there he was. It turns out he was operating on many people as an ENT and was making 4 times the average ENT doctor.
Thanks for considering "people across the pond", as I'm a Dutchman living in Ireland. A lot of meds are named differently in the States. Also, what you call a physical therapist is a physiotherapist in Europe. In Europe a physical therapist doesn't have the extensive training/education that a physiotherapist has. Confusing, but there you go. Ibuprofen is known in Europe under a number of brand names and as generic Ibuprofen or brufen. The strange thing is that I pay about two Euros for 20 tablets (400mg) in the Netherlands while I pay about 7 Euros for the same in Ireland. I get them sent over.
Been taking a combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen for the past month to help with lower back pain and sciatica pain. I’ll take this as a sign to wean off…
Ibuprofen increases stroke risk. Aspirin works as well or better using similar active mechanism but reduces stroke risk and is much more easily detoxified by the body.
Also be mindful of Ibuprofen dosage levels when using Voltaren (Diclofenac) gel as it's an NSAID as well. I use both occasionally for osteoarthritis in my fingers and shoulder, and they work amazingly well, but I'm careful not to use too much of either when using together.
Yes, bu weight. I OFTEN get prescribed a really high dose because they go by age and I am small framed with not a lot of muscle mass...I usually take half of whatever the drs say and it works great.
Same for me. I don't understand why body weight is not used rather than age. I've been over dosed with a prescription because it was based on age. Couldn't believe 115lb person would be dosed the same as a 350lb person.
same except opposite. As a teen I was obese, bordering on morbidly obese. 120kg at 5ft tall. Yeah, big yikes. I had a few different things that would need painkillers/numbing stuff through my childhood and teens, tooth fillings, stepping on a nail, the time I nearly cut my thumb off etc... but the painkillers never worked at all. Didn't even take the edge off. (no I'm not joking, I'd sit in the school dentist's chair screaming while my parents held me down because I felt Everything while they drilled my teeth. Bloody traumatic) I was actually worried I was immune to all painkillers, or wondering if painkillers were actually just a placebo when I was a teen. When I started getting period cramps people would go "why don't you just take ibuprofen" and I'd reply "that stuff's a hoax. It doesn't work it's just a placebo" ugh cringey, but understandable why I believed that considering my history with painkillers. Welp turns out I wasn't immune, they were giving me child doses when I was in a body double the size of most adult women. Now as a adult I'm just a smidge overweight, 79kg, and WOW painkillers ACTUALLY work now!! I went to the dentist for a filling early January this year, and the right side of my face was numb for almost the whole day, cheek and tongue included... that's nuts!!!!
@@Mel-qr5ob I'm so sorry you went through those experiences as a teen, and can only imagine how mortifying and painful it must have been. There are so many people who would be helped by the approach to use weight rather than age to dose medications, and hope that one day soon there will be a change across the board for everyone to benefit.
I recall losing a patient from butazoladin prescribed for shoulder pain. Her skin blistered off and she died. Pharma then pushed the drug to the veterinary world. Then vecoxan produced by Merril killed a few humans so that went down the veterinary channel too. The latter put one of my best working farm dogs into renal failure . The vet was surprised it happened so quickly. The dog spent the last two years of her life in renal failure, as it turned out, with little joint pain, I didn’t go back to the vet, It needs to be pointed out that GSDs can have a sensitive stomach. My son was popping Ibruprofen for various pains and strains and I believe it has caused the colitis he now suffers with. I stear clear of NSAIDS and only take paracetamol when I have to, that way it works better. As an over the counter drug, often in different presentations, the public can make mistakes mixing the various products with dire consequences.

You might want to have an endoscopy done. I, too used to take 800 mg. of ibuprofen daily. I ended up with a burning sensation in my stomach all the time. The endoscopy showed I had bleeding ulcers that were infected from the ibuprofen. I took Talicia for the infection. Needless to say, I no longer take ibuprofen, my ulcers are gone and so is my burning stomach.
I stay away from all pain killer's, Motrin works great, but I have hiatal hernia, and I need to stay away from them all. Good to know about Ibuprofen. I have been given prescriptions for as much as 600mg and 800 mg in a day.
It works great...until it doesn't. Ended up in the hospital this year because I was puking blood from ibuprofen as recommended on label for pain. Bad news.
I can't take any antinflammatories as they have made my stomach bleed. I was on a strong dose of naproxen and I had the worst stomach pains ever. Found out I had had a bleed internally.
I take Ibuprofen quite often lately for my rotator cuff tear pain I got a few months ago from being in an accident. The pain is quite literally driving me insane! the pills help the pain a little bit.
Question: there is now ibuprofen in gel form otc. When using it as directed rubbing into knees skin, will it still affect the lining of the stomach? Due to prostaglandin interaction??
Since I used to be in toxicology and pharmaceutical formulation development, I had avoided using anything except enteric coated aspirin unless by doctor's orders, aspirin having the widest therapeutic range (10-100 mg/dL for headaches, 100-200 mg/dL for arthritis, toxic range starting above 250 to 300 mg/dL -- as of 1985). Due to a knee injury, I have had to take Ibuprofen, up until 2 weeks before my gastric bypass surgery, after which I had to take a liquid acetaminophen formulation -- children's version, until after 5 months I could start swallowing it in the pill form. But I try to minimize it due to the narrow therapeutic range and fairly low toxic range.
With you having the toxicology background, and now having some experience with ibuprofen & acetaminophen, do you still prefer the enteric coated aspirin??
@@roxannerodriguez7075 If possible, yes, but ibuprofen is more effective for arthritis. Note that I never take large amounts of any of them except when prescribed. I cannot take the aspirin and ibuprofen as yet due to my gastric bypass surgery, will not until my doctor allows me to. Acetaminophen is the only one I am allowed to take, and it is not really effective against the same pains, it does dull them, but does not do as good a job, even at 2000 mg a day, and I generally take a maximum of 1000 mg a day... and I skip days.
When I took my parents to a kidney doctor, before she even introduced herself, she said, "Never ever take Advil or Aleve. They are bad for your kidneys." A woman I worked with took so much Tylenol it gave her jaundice. Aspirin is not good for your stomach. Every pain reliever has some adverse affects on some part of your body. It is a guessing game which one will hold up the best.

I had to stop taking ibuprofen and all NSAIDs as it caused me to have bleeds in my stomach and colon. It also (ibprophen) made my ears ring like crazy.
After my car wreck I was taking a lot of ibuprofen and my doctor told me to stop taking it immediately and put me on 15 mgs on Meloxicam a day. I had my doubts that one tiny pill would work, but it does and I've never gone back to ibuprofen
I hate to take NSAIDS and hold off when I can, but ibuprofen is necessary and I hate suffering from headaches more. It gives me relief from sinus headaches and TMJ pain. Ibuprofen is the only thing that worked for my migraines besides Ajovy shot taken once a month but was to costly when living pay check to pay check. So im back to taking Ibuprofen only when needed.
Some doctors say a mild fever is GOOD because it means the immune system has been activated, and so ibuprofen reducing a fever will reduce the immune system's ability to fight off an illness.
Why take to reduce a fever. A fever is the body's natural mechanism for repair - so why on earth would you want to hinder the body's repair mechanism unless you want to lengthen the period of healing and want to 'enjoy' the side effects of liver / kidney damage!!.
I used to take Ibuprofen because of it's quick results , but I noticed also it makes me tired, sleepy. I would feel the effects the very next day. As someone who has lowered caffeine intake, it was a vicious cycle.

Thanks guys! It’s the side effects. I was over dosed on the liquid form in hospital when having my tonsils out. No other health concerns at all but it made me horrifically bilious, eventually just heaving bile every 10 minutes. They gave me an anti-nauseant injection which calmed it down. I’ve discovered it returns about 5-6 hours after taking Ibuprofen now, every time. It seems my liver just can’t handle it and I’m not a drinker! It worries me that it is used so casually because when it goes wrong it’s terrible.
I have an atypical variant of asthma. I have been having a hard time finding a pulmonologist (within my insurance network, that is) who will help me control my asthma. I take ibuprofen fairly regularly because anti-inflammatory medications seem to work better for me than a bronchial smooth muscle relaxer. I know I shouldn't take this much Ibuprofen, but I feel like I have no choice. It stinks, because I know there will be consequences down the road.
I had to stop taking Advil because it hurt my kidneys. I was way over the normal range. My osteoarthritis is brutal in my knee and back. I Got gel injections in knee and things are improving. I’ve gotten great tips from B&B-the 2 most famous PT on the Inet!
My pain management has had me on 2 different types of Morphine PLUS 800mg IBU for years. I'm extremely careful & only take it when my sciatica and or bulging disc's swell & compress arthritic vertebrae
Excedrin is a brand of acetaminophen (paracetamol) with caffeine for headaches... I worked as a toxicology tech in a hospital which ran the county wide emergency drug screening (I am a chemist). Later I worked in pharmaceutical formulation development. Acetaminophen has a fairly narrow therapeutic range (10-20 mg/dL), and toxic side effects (mainly liver damage) above 20-25 mg/dL. Also, avoid any alcohol when using it, as the toxic metabolite from acetaminophen is detoxified by the same enzymatic pathway as is the toxic metabolite of alcohol... and since you will have more alcohol metabolite in you body than that of acetaminophen even if you only had one drink and the enzymes are fine tuned for fructose (fruit sugar - which you should also avoid in large amounts), it will preferentially breakdown the less toxic alcohol metabolite, leaving the more toxic acetaminophen metabolite in the liver, damaging it.
@@michelenichele294 If you read my other comments, I did go through aspirin. For years enteric coated aspirin (so it does not dissolve in the stomach) was the only pain reliever I used unless prescribed. As of 1985 (when I was doing toxicology), aspirin was listed with a therapeutic range of 10-100 mg/dL (5x the one for acetaminophen) for headaches, from 10- to 250 mg/dL for arthritis - different lists gave upper ranges from 200 to 300), and toxic effects starting from 250 to 350 mg/dL (again different lists with different ranges), a minimum of 10x higher amount of aspirin in your blood before seeing toxic effects as compared to acetaminophen (Tylenol).
All of the Excedrin brands do not contain aspirin. Excedrin Tension Headache brand does not contain aspirin. Before correcting someone, please get your facts straight.
Should have mentioned that taking NSAIDs with food doesn’t provide much protection if you are taking multiple doses daily for many days. I am a gastro NP and explain to pts that the NSAIDs block prostaglandins to stop inflammation and pain but unfortunately those same chemicals help to protect the stomach lining. So taking NSAIDs chronically leads to less protection for the stomach and increases the chance for gastric ulcers.
I'm 63 and have had chronic neck and back pain for years. I found out a few weeks ago I can no longer take ibuprofen or nsaids, They raise my blood pressure. One question, since ibuprofen was not an OTC drug when I was in toxicology from 1982 to 1985, what is the therapeutic and toxic effect ranges in the blood. I use mg/dL (that is what I used at work decades ago), but I can convert from other units... I think micrograms/mL (uL/mL) is the most popular today -- I memorized the most common overdosed OTC drugs and prescription drugs we tested for (aminophylline/theophylline, caffeine, acetaminophen, aspirin and alcohol (ethanol for those legal and emergency blood alcohol testing and for ethylene glycol poisoning -- treatment being an I.V. of alcohol so your body does not metabolize the ethylene glycol, but clears it unmetabolized through the urine, and yes, I did testify in court once or twice on the test protocols for drunk driving tests).

Take Milk Thistle an herb to protect your liver against Ibuprofen , damage , etc.

Someone in my family took hospital-level doses of ibuprofen for several decades for Migraines, and this is the cause of her colon problems today, something to do with the acid.
it doesn't work for migraines that a whole different thing.

Also be mindful of Ibuprofen dosage levels when using Voltaren (Diclofenac) gel as it's an NSAID as well. I use both occasionally for osteoarthritis in my fingers and shoulder, and they work amazingly well, but I'm careful not to use too much of either when using together.
I would not take any, and address your problem a different way!
Bloody traumatic)
I was actually worried I was immune to all painkillers, or wondering if painkillers were actually just a placebo when I was a teen.
I recall losing a patient from butazoladin prescribed for shoulder pain. Her skin blistered off and she died. Pharma then pushed the drug to the veterinary world.

Acetaminophen is the only one I am allowed to take, and it is not really effective against the same pains, it does dull them, but does not do as good a job, even at 2000 mg a day, and I generally take a maximum of 1000 mg a day... and I skip days.

I favor Excedrin for headaches. Works within minutes for me. Any potential Problems with Excedrin?

My personal opinion the Dr's sometimes give extra tablets for" in case".
I once went to a Dr for stomach pains n he gave me ibuprofen, spasmed, n diclofenac. Lucky I came home n Google the side effects , contra indications n saw all the meds weren't necessary.
I took the spasmed for 1 or 2 days n Rubbed my essential oils n I'm fine .
I'd rather ask my pharmacist who knows what medicines reactions are to each other.
Dr's should diagnose n let the pharmacists prescribe
Just an opinion 🤷
Thank you.

I have CIDP what does Imulingloilin do to the body? It can be quite nauseous.
