I love the tried-and-true feeling of a wood neck. Give me a vintage Telecaster and I am content. That being said - I also like to explore new technologies.
About six months ago I was looking for budget friendly carbon fiber necks. A fully carbon fiber neck starts at about $1000 usd and goes up. One I found went for $4300 usd. Wow!
What I mean by fully carbon fiber is the neck is pretty much made from carbon fiber. There are also what are called carbon fiber reinforced necks. They usually have some sort of a frame or tube around the truss rod or another part of the neck that reinforces the neck.
Why would you be interested in a carbon fiber neck? I have experience with carbon fiber with firearms. The material is:
    • Light Weight
    • Resistant to Humidity
    • Resistant to Temperature
    • Won't Warp
    • Incredibly Durable
    • Will Last a Lifetime
All things that are important in parts for a firearm that you want to shoot accurately.
The same benefits also apply to guitars. Imagine not having to worry about heat, humidity, warping, scratches, fret sprouting, etc. If you live in an incredibly dry climate or an incredibly moist climate you have to worry about what this does to the wood of your guitar neck. With carbon fiber reportedly once you set your truss rod - you pretty much do not have to adjust it again.
Back to six months ago. I found that Klos guitars, the maker of carbon fiber guitars was thinking about making a replacement neck for Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. The interesting thing was they were touting a carbon fiber neck that would be a drop-in replacement that came with stainless steel frets, locking tuners if I choose, it would be pleked and the nut would be setup for the string size I use. All of this would come for between $499 and $799. I ordered and paid for mine. I just received it the other day in the mail.
In the world of carbon fiber necks this is inexpensive. To be honest when comparing this price wise to American made Fender necks it is comparable in price. I know, I will get a lot of comments saying that this is a ridiculous price to pay for a neck. All I have to say is - it is not. If you consistently buy lesser priced necks, that is cool and so do I.
KLOS Guitars has been in business for less than 10 years. The Provo-based company specializes in carbon fiber travel guitars.
From Klos Guitars - This upgraded carbon fiber neck will fit most STRATOCASTERS® and TELECASTERS®, and several other models.
Here are some of the specifications:
    • Nut Material Graphtech TUSQ
    • Scale Length 25.5"
    • Nut Width 35 mm (1.378")
    • Fret Material Stainless Steel
    • Fret Size Medium Jumbo
    • Number of frets 22
I installed the neck, and I would say following the instructions was an uneventful experience. I did not have to ream out the neck holes on the body as you may have to. What this means is if you inset the supplied screw into the four neck holes in your body they should easily fit through the body. Klos supplies the correct drill bit to drill yours out if the screw does not slide though. They also have an online video showing you how to complete this step. In the end they also say if you do not feel comfortable doing this step you should take it to a luthier.
They also ask that also ask that you do not use an electric driver to screw in the four screws. I used a Philips screwdriver and hand tightened my screws.
    Observations
The weight of the neck with tuners is about 1 lbs. 1 ounces. The weight of a wooden telecaster neck with tuners weighs about 1 lbs. 7 to 8 ounces.
I really like the look of the neck installed on the body that I installed it onto.
The headstock is almost the shape of a telecaster headstock, so it does not look to unusual to me.
    Playability -
It feels like a normal neck, and I did not get any fret buzz once I adjusted the saddles and intonation properly. It feels like a satin neck.
The sound of the guitar is very clean sounding. You can really hear the highs.
Klos is having a sale on the neck for $499 as an introductory price. They say on the website the price will go up to $799 later. They also say the lead or delivery time is three months. I would add a couple months to that per my experience. You have to be patient.

I have a G&L Tribute Fallout that I love the sound of but never use because of neck dive. I understand G&L neck pocket fit is not exactly the same as Fender, but I am thinking this might be worth exploring further.

I don't know if you verified the nut width, but it should be 1 11/16" (1.6875"). The Klos people verified that. The nut width you mentioned of 1.378" might be too narrow even for a ukulele 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I wondered why I could only install 4 strings. Stupid me!

By the way, I meant to ask, what are your thoughts on the tone? Do you really lose the organic sound of wood?

@@srinip I think that wood is better for overall sound.
