Time for an EPIC Tele Upgrade!
Enjoy :)
is the weight of the neck similar to the original Tele neck?
No truss rod needed?
@@PetraKann No truss rod is needed with this heavy-duty prepreg construction. These also go through a couple of long ramp & soak cycles heat cycles and are extremely stable. Maybe you might have some issues if you were playing in an oven at over 200 degrees Celcius, but I am not game to try it even in the name of R&D🙂
I really don't see THAT much..I see molded fiber THAT might be around the same price as WOOD..are you using a compressor? Sounds a little compressed. Fiberglass gets sticky when my hand sweats.
I really only see MAYBE $600
@@larrypetrosky3180 Bursts now selling for $300,000. The average person wouldn't see that in those guitars, but the prices are the prices.
Stop with the fake drama. You wasted 2 minutes crying about the screws maybe fitting. "Will it, won't it oh lets see?" Then it slides right in. Holy St, dude. Stop with the fake drama. Wasted time on both ends. You wasted my time waiting, and your energy worrying.
That tele sounds so hi-fi with that neck. Amazing, very lively. I've always been a fan of alternative approaches to guitar building. I tried some Washburns or something in the late 80s with carbon fiber necks and they sounded and played amazing. A neck like this can be more consistent in mass production compared to wood.
Very nice. If the price is $2500 that’s absurd. No tele on the planet is worth that amount.
Darrell said the price on the website should be in NZD, so if you're in the US then the price is "only" 1,580 USD lol But yeah, that price is pretty nuts. They're a small business making a niche item, so I guess if you really want one of these then you gotta pay the premium.
I can throw in Robo-tuners at no additional charge.
@@CosmicPotato I'd argue it's almost worth it? That neck might outperform most of the boutique telecasters, and a build with it would come cheaper than like a suhr or what not. The Rubato one, however, was much cheaper and had a much more elegant nut!
Umm….an actual’54 Fender Tele is a $25,000+ guitar, so if you for example, wanted to tour THAT axe, and take out some of the risk of harming it, a different neck might be just the ticket.
The strat neck from Italy? He did recently was $900, still high, but it is an exotic material with an involved manufacture process, that one seemed almost reasonable to me, hell a Pick up set can go for that much these days (silver wire SD)
There’s lots of Tele’s worth way more than $2500 😂😂😂 Broden your horizon, lots of instruments worth 5-6 figures plus.
I know about evo gold frets, which are technically softer than stainless steel. If this is brass then that’s a first for me for sure. Good to see someone offering something interesting as an aftermarket part. Hopefully as stuff like this gets more popular, the price will go down.
Bronze not brass.
10x the life of nickel silver.
Sintoms special bell bronze if you want to look it up
@@ArchetypeGuitarsNZ that is good info. Thanks
Bold of you to assume the price will go down as popularity increases.
I suppose you could assume the high cost is due to a niche market requiring high prices to make good profit margins. However, it is pretty common that as demand increases, prices do too.
The only way you'd see lower cost is if supply increases without a major demand increase, which is pretty unlikely, or a major reduction in manufacturing costs, like making it in China.
@@ASpoonfulOfJimmy I think that as popularity increases, companies with the resources to mass produce carbon fiber guitars will offer cheaper alternatives. I get that it works against conventional supply/demand, but once the demand/awareness reaches a certain point, I hope that companies will recognize this and balance everything out. Because I want one lol.
The carbon neck cost converts to $1579.58 USD. In some cases that’s a new Fender guitar. I think I’ll have to pass but I enjoyed the video.
Yeah, that's absurdly priced.
In some cases? That price covers an absurd range of guitars! You could like, 8 guitars for that money, hell you could commission a luthier to make you a special, custom instrument for that money
I know Holland Guitars very well and I have played one of these tele necks! These necks are FANTASTIC! Very smooth, Neck doesn't bow etc, really nice feel!. As per the price, don't forget these necks are hand made to perfection, not on an assembly line, they are perfectly constructed.
If you consider people buying $7000, $10,000 Gibsons or Fenders, then paying $1500 for this neck is well worth it!. Congrats to my mates at Holland Guitars and well done!
Thanks very much for the comments. There was no doubt that you loved these necks when you wanted to take our demonstrator guitar home with you. With your many years of gigging and in studios around the world I value your opinion. Thanks again for posting🙂
Wow. Very bright and defined while still capturing wood like resonance. Perfect for us clean tone players. Now I fantasizing a custom build.
It really brings out the tone of those pickups.
I’ve had the unique opportunity to become very acquainted with a T Style guitar with this neck and can say that it plays super well. The frets are super high with a silky feel and the richlite board doesn’t feel so far away from a slab of ebony. Neck profile is modern C Fender like. Very nice indeed
Love it, but yeah…it’s out of everyone’s price point! Glad we got to see you demo it though.
The neck looks incredible. I love carbon fiber.
You're using the Allen key the HARD way!
I personally own one of these. Its an early prototype so admittedly it was cheaper then this.
I actually love the fact it has no truss rod, is light, and has tuning stability like nothing I've ever seen. Amazing sustain. Bell bronze is self lubricating and is crazy fast fret material.
No regrets getting one.... I'm a Luthier and build guitars only from wood! I wanted to dislike it, maybe even claim it has no soul but, it has a whole Lotta soul and is somehow fun too?!
How does that work having no truss rod regarding when you check to see how the necks' behaving by holding down the 1st and 15th fret is there any relief? Thanks.
George.
@@georgemcfarlane9615 They are manufactured dead flat, once the strings are in there is slight relief and that is how it stays forever and a day.
There is no choking of notes with a low action on mine.
In saying that, Deane is currently working on a truss rod model for those that really feel they require it
will it be the same as with wooden neck to refret it? I have Rainsong and it looks that I need a little bit improve linearity of the neck and refret it since original frets are used at upper part
@@daslektarn richlite fretboard is much the same as ebony as far as refret job goes. Have to be careful for tear out of the wood but a good Luthier can do it!
Everyone is commenting that it is too pricy at $2500, but that is NZD.
It is about $1580 USD, or about £1300 GBP.
But, yeah, still too expensive for me.
$2,500 is way too much for a neck. That's what I paid for my PRS 513.
Here's an idea, do an aftermarket neck comparison for all those you've tried and let us know which one is best. Swap them in and out of the same guitar(s) to determine tone, fit, value, looks, etc.
Great idea!. And also how you can tweak them to make them better.
It’s too expensive for you, there’s a difference. While I’m not interested in this for any of my guitars, the quality and the cost of materials is good value overall.
He isn’t here for you anymore at almost 1M subscribers and tons of sponsors he is here for the money. He will play the nice guy put a smile on his face and pedal product.
2500 NZ Dollars = aprox 1500 USD, still expensive for me, as I dont know what the manufacturing or the costs involve I can't talk about the worth.
@@bluwng Darrell reviews music equipment!
Looks very nice on the '52 Tele.
Never have to adjust a neck again ? Never have to refret ( order Stainless )? No changes or climate issues ? Beautiful craftsmanship and playability ? YES !!!!!
All I can say is WOW!
Make sure to slide it across the table (front and back) 👍🏻 Brutal…
I like the video, thank you! Tonewise comparison of original/replacement neck would be cool!
Based on current exchange the $1500 (US conversion) price actually isn't radically expensive if you are a professional or even semi-pro player who needs something that can travel. You can get a loaded Tele body for around $500 if you hunt and for $2-2.5k you have a travel ready pro instrument.
I think, that when people strive to make the best, it quite rightly comes at a price!
I have watched the reviews of Ferrari’s and other exotics, with the reviewer having the time of his life, in something I can never afford.
But in a few months it’s my birthday, it’s likely that I will call Deane up and get me one. I can’t afford a 812 Superfast, but I can afford a Holland Carbon Neck….
Makes me want to get a Telecaster kit (body-maybe cedar)-tank you.
You can get a neck from Rubato Guitars that’s all carbon fibre but customized to your specs for less then this. It’s still a super high end product and expensive, but it’s about $500 less than these. Stainless steel frets on the Rubato, your choice of fretboard material/color, fret size, etc. can be ordered for tele or strat shaped neck heels.
This looks like a good neck but bang for your buck wise it feels a bit limited.
... yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessss...
Good stuff Darrell!
I have one of these necks fitted to my Warmth tele ( Korina body), and it truly is the most playable guitar neck ever! It is just SO consistent and reliable- once set up, it STAYS set up- no movement, just perfect playability all over the neck. My neck finish is matte, and it is super smooth and easy to play. And, combined with the Korina body and humbuckers, this beast of an axe sustains like my Les Pauls do.
Should mention the overall quality is impeccable also- the bell bronze is super slinky, makes bending somehow more controllable, if that makes sense?!
Yes, it's not cheap, but if like me you want the best you can give to your axe, then look no further
Just my two cents... :)
Does it sound more hollow? Maybe I’m crazy.
But it does look cool and the fact that it won’t warp like a wooden neck is amazing.
Have a great suggestion for showing contour and neck profiles/radius. Look up Surfboard Shaping Room Lighting. Inexpensive to do and will show EVER LINE!
Awesome neck I’m a big fan!!!!!!
Me too😄
It does sound good. I wish they made a 1987 Kramer Baretta version one too. That's my favorite guitar.
I’m not a huge fan of carbon fiber necks, but this one looks super cool and I’d totally buy it!
Interesting, but to be very candid, the imperviousness to temperature and humidity can be a little overblown unless you're travelling from Phoenix to the North Pole to Thailand within a week. My wood necks rarely need adjusting anyway. To me, one huge con that Darrell doesn't mention is the lack of a truss rod. Not everybody has the same relief preferences, so this a HUGE con, and is actually a feature that the newer Klos carbon fiber neck has (probably cheaper too).
But the con I personally can't get past is the tone. Both the Klos and this one sound very metallic to my ears. Some people may like that, but with all it's twang, even a Tele can sound woody. I'd say this is a novelty, nothing more. A good roasted maple neck from Warmoth, Plekked by your favorite luthier AFTER installation, is going to be a far better genuine investment, in my opinion.
Looks super cool but i can get a few aluminum necks and set it up once and never worry about have to touch it price point is kinda crazy but more power to the one that wants to shell out the dough it is pretty rad. Great video!
Compared to CF Aluminum is HEAVY! Back in the day Damn Travis Bean guitar weighed 12-15 lbs! Those things sounded great, but you pick it up and the neck is COLD weird feeling, sticky when you sweat too!. And they will NOT feedback like a wood guitar,
Dunno todays process might be different using aluminum
but CF has a resonance, it’s way more like wood, except temperature and humidity have zero impact on it. And it’s beautiful if you ask me, I’ve got a guitar with CF binding, I like the look
Bob Weir of the dead toured on a non-wood guitar for years. Modulus”? I think that was the name, wasn’t CF I don’t think, but same context, impervious to weather, no truss rod, perfect tour axe. Course Bob doesn’t solo much? Not sure I’d like it.
But CF acoustic guitars sound really good, react much like wood to vibration, and any guitar is a the sum of its parts and construction, 2 Les Pauls might sound way different from one another. CNC machines are more precise than hand built like the old days, I’ve heard on channels that PRS guitars don’t vary much like old Gibsons do
Paul refined every aspect of building guitars= consistency
@@jonathanstrand2474 nothing a little baby powder can't fix
That is really expensive though I wonder if there's a cheaper cf I can't swallow that price just to try it
The hex wrench would work more efficiently if you use the other end.
What's the cross section? Is it hollow or a wood core with carbon on the skin?
It looked a touch small for the neck pocket.
Also, the screw holes were significantly larger than the bolts, so how tight do you need to ratchet in those bolts?
Did you add something on the sides to keep it from sliding a bit in the pocket?
The fit is close, but definitely not perfect.
It’s very nice looking , much better than maple I think . Nice and twangy.
Do you have a suggestion for a cheap/decent replacement neck for an old Ibanez? I did get a RG350 second hand for 150 - but some frets were pretty beaten up. Wondering if fret job or new neck would be more reasonable.
Very nice but way beyond my budget. On a side note I have a mexican tele that I am planning on turning into a baritone. Looks like an easy bolt on but I am wondering if the stock pickups are up to the task. maybe a topic for a future video? Thanks for the great content of your videos, I really enjoy them.
That is a beauty...........
Thank you!
Biggest question is how does it compare to oil finished or satin finished maple?
Awesome
Warwick Basses use Bell Bronze frets also
Listen! I can still hear the sustain.
$1,500 + shipping for just a NECK?! Insane! That is too much
Well, OK. It's a beautiful looking neck, and the "nice" things about it are indeed very nice. But far, far beyond what I'll be spending on guitar stuff from here on. 0I'll have to run with what I brung, so to speak. Glad I bought some quality stuff when I was still working. Nice nod to The Band in your test - put my mind on the intro of "The Weight." My brain was heading toward "Pulled in to Nazareth, feelin' 'bout half-past dead . . . " Guess my age is showing. Sounds great on the Tele, and has some nice touches.
If fortune dropped one of these on my bench, or if I won the 6/49 and money was no object, maybe I'd think about one of these. Possibly as part of a "top-end Partscaster" where, again, cost didn't matter. But after reaching "official" retirement age about the same time that the shrinking Canuckistan pesos I'd planned to use for guitar goodies in retirement are now all going toward natural gas, electricity and water, still short & with zip left over for groceries - Meh! Thanks for the review Darrell.
Harder frets should yield a brighter tone, like the difference between d’addario NYXL and straight nickel strings
is it hollow or is there some kind of core?? if solid carbon fiber it would be heavy
I’ve been looking for an all black Tele neck for a project. This would look pretty spiffy, if I can afford it.
It looked a little wobbly in the pocket...
Did you have to adjust the strings height? May be even the pickups height? Will it fit a MIJ model?
New drinking game: Viewers have to take a shot every time you say “Neck.”
Idk if I'd trust those frets for a neck like this. The gold is flashier and does look good but I'd still prefer stainless. Really nice neck though.
I'm saying again. Flaxwood necks for strat or tele. Got one for my birthday. Lovely piece of kit for 255€.
Regarding the stainless steel frets, If i remember right some stainless steel will have galvanic corrosion when in contact with carbon fiber.
Ordering one for my Squire! Lol
Hi Darrell, how are you. Just to ask if you can review the Lace Sensors pickups ... I guess that you have a strat ULTRA and a PLUS hanging at your right back ... Perhaps you can compare with more regular strat mics.... Thank you very much! -Hugo
Very nice. Get back to me when it’s one tenth the $2,500 price. I can get a very nice PRS for that.
Somehow it sounds more clear and articulate to me. Also more 'trebly", if you know what I mean. I however do not feel there are any real benefit to be had except for the obvious stability. The cost is prohibitive!
2500 New Zealand Dollars are about 1475€...still a lot of money. I would like to see a comparison between different guitar necks on one guitar, aluminum neck from Baguley Guitars, carbon fiber necks, different woods... This could be helpful for people to find the sounds they like or don't like. For me the Holland neck sounds a bit like you would use titanium parts...
I like aluminum necks for metal and rock music. 🙃🤘
Any chance you did a review on Flaxwood necks ?
🔥
No truss rod?
Hi, I just recently SUBSCRIBED to your channel & I was surprised when I saw some of your videos about giving tips on choosing a guitar.
I am a guitarist, I can say my skill is above averagred. Unfortunately, I only have an old classical acoustic guitar that I've been using for years. I can't afford to purchase even a cheap electric one.
I'm hoping, if it's possible for me to ask one of your spare cheap guitar as a birthday gift...😅 It'll be one of the BEST present I'll ever recieve.
More power to your COOL channel & God bless.
Thank you in advance...
Not going to comment on the price, but bell bronze is incredibly hard. It was traditionally used to make cannons and swivel guns as well as bells. The only concern I would have is fast oxidisation, so they'll probably need moderately regular polishing.
They don't oxidize, but just turn a really nice dark gold!
My problem with this is the neck alone is just $500 shy of a complete Emerald guitar made completely of CF with no heel and a truss rod.
I own an X30 and a Virtuo. The Virtuo was about $2800. That's a complete guitar with a piezo bridge, bridge and neck buckers, and a midi output.
Kkos offers half the price carbon fiber neck with SS tuners. Id love a comparison.
It kills the vintage look and sound but seems great feel to the hand (great fretwork). It seems great to modernize a tele.
It's beautiful but pricey. But I would buy one if I were a Tele player. Great juxtaposition of modern carbon fiber and the old standard wood!
The strat neck he reviewed recently was excellent, check out the video, Italian company, came in a special travel case $900, not $2.5k or (actually NZD price is about 30% higher than US). the Italian company will also custom fit other brands bolt ons, no tuners though, but $100 will get you a good set of tuners.
I’m considering one,
digitize your neck pocket dimensions and send it to them, I guess
The carbon weave is so good Lambo good lol
I had the impression that the screws were to slim or anyway not the right ones. Are you sure that the fourth screw was ok..?
Agree on the price point. Why? Not a fan of the synthetic made necks or fretboards. I have a Micarta fretboard on a Sigma Acoustic 000-15. It plays nice but it has no soul.
Hey Darrell, How many guitars do you personally have? Not just review and sell. Thank you.
Really nice neck, but the the neck pocket looks way top big when you put it in.
If I had money to piss away then sure, I’d get one. Maybe on a build but not on my original US tele.
The neck only is sold at the price of a good whole Tele... 😵 would be nice to supply an assorted pickguard for that price !
I looked up the price and yeah I really want one but for around USD $1600 thats a lot , but i still want one.
yowza that's pretty
So there is no truss rod?
I’m a carpenter as well as a guitar geek. I’m bias. Faux is as low as I go. At lesst make it like vinyl flooring with some wood grains to choose. Lol
I respect the composite material and its stability. With some contempt clinging to the past. When I want ikea for my guitar I know where to go. Lol
Oh…vation. Musical kayak paddle the guy in deliverance should have been playing. Lol
Not even going to drag Mary spender and her carbon fiber guitar into this. man I was pissed off she made it sound good. Oh I hate that. Lolol
Just jokes. I can’t debate much just feeling some predisposed way. I didn’t mean it I’m sorry.
I was looking for a high quality Ritchlite neck with stainless frets, and I'm OK to invest in a Rubato, but their order form shows a bunch of options, with no images to represent what you're ordering. It's one thing to hand-craft a top quality neck, but for $1900 CDN, they'd better show me what it's gonna look like first. They got me all the way to the order form, then I'm supposed to reach into a crackerjack box & the toy is a mystery til I get it? Kinda not how online ordering works.
Oh God, What's in the box!? What's in the box!?
Need more metal tele demos \m/
I think you're ready to try a Parker Nitefly, best guitar I've ever played
They don't pop up that often but I've always liked them!!!
Did I miss - what's the fingerboard material?
It is Richlite, the same as top-of-the-line Gibson and martin use! I have a Gibson custom shop LP Custom with a richlite fretboard.
Aren't they actually screws and not bolts?
Please, buy a yoga mat for your workbench. I'm wincing hearing that body/neck scrape across the wood. 😱😜
Two and half grand 😮naaaaa
$2500 NZD is @ 1540 USD. Pricey any way you look at it! Pretty, thpugh!
Couple of things not covered in this video. First, fretboard material? Second no truss rod adjustments? Not everyone likes the same action, whatever action these necks are set at?
I would have checked that all 4 bolts are the same length. The bolt in the rear looks like it only had maybe 3 threads holding it on.
All Bolts are the same length and screw into the inserts the same amount!
Holland Guitars, Based in New Zealand?
NZ, home of McLaren (Bruce), Britten (john), Rocket labs, America's cup-winning yachts all users of carbon fibre and composites to the highest order OH yes, and Holland Guitars
Crazy expensive. It should also have threaded inserts rather than just holes for mounting.
Someone should tell Holland there's a typo on their price sheet! Can you believe they put an extra 0 on the end! That would just be crazy to ask $2500 for any guitar neck! Sure glad it was just a typo though. Wheeeeewweeee!
List of people who can afford this neck:
1. Drug dealers
2. Lottery winners
3. Jeff Bezos
$2500? Is that what average CF replacement necks cost? I’m not sure I could fork that over for a neck. They ought to offer free shipping to anywhere in the world at that price point.
Beautiful neck for those who can afford NZD 2,500 = USD 1,580.
I'm a more traditionalist. I play Fender and ride a Harley. I want a wooden guitar for the feel and looks. I have no problem with a wooden neck and wouldn't change if it were the same price.
Creo que suena un poco a plástico. Pienso que nada puede sonar como una buena madera. Buen trabajo de todos modos, éxito!
Very cool neck! $2500?! Fail. What is the USD conversion rate? I thought the prior Strat carbon fiber neck this channel did was around $900? At least that is almost attainable for the quality and tech.
Our friend Darrell tells us nothing about the actual construction of this neck, or it’s crucial measurements and, tellingly its weight. True carbon fibre construction will be substantially lighter.
Be good to know if this only was a carbon fibre wrap on a Fiberglas core, for example. Just made to look pretty but still a resin-based neck. For the price that’s still not terrible.
