Another great album 40 years old in 2024 - tell us your thoughts ?
Hi. Thank you for this video...In my personal opinion this was the last great album of Simple Minds golden era. Ciao!
Thank you too!. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I always thought the production on this album was poor and the remasters haven't improved it. I know Jim Kerr always wished he'd worked with Trevor Horn
and he did of course later on Street Fighting Years. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
As a kid in the 80s I was obsessed with Simple Minds, and actually, initially kinda welcomed their change to a more commercial sound. But, after Mick McNeil and Derek Forbes left and Jim Kerr's ego went crazy, I very quickly lost interest. Sparkle in the Rain is still an excellent album that holds a lot of positive, personal memories though.
Thanks for comments and for sharing. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. Appreciated. MW
New Gold Dreams is one of my favourite albums by Simple Minds closely followed by Street Fighting Years, wasn't overly struck on this album but did enjoy listening to it
Definite change of sound but still a great album. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Not best Simple Minds album, but some tracks from that album are probably best Simple Minds live songs, especially "East At Easter" & "Book Of Brilliant Things".
Indeed. Book of Brilliant Things is awesome live. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Far far away from Son’s and Fascination. Too far.
Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
Great album, a shift away from originality perhaps? . Thanks guys.
Our pleasure!. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Agree Duncan although not as creative as Empires and Dance or Sons and fascination for example - this album packs a punch! Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe -Andy
Good episode lads, Steve Lillywhite definitely up the anti in terms of the Production sound
Thanks as always for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I was 12 years old when this masterpiece had came out. It still is so awesome to listen.
100%. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Wonderful album.
I remember my cousin gave me the Promised You A Miracle 7" when I was 12.
When I played the flip side "Theme For Great Cities" I was amazed to say the least.
The following week I was on holiday in Scotland in Peterhead.
My other cousin took me to the only record store there and I bought up the rest of their albums.
And still play them today.
Cheers.
Also the way they broke down East At Easter on the OUAT tour was a credit to Mick McNeils genius.
Great comments, thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
New Gold Dream was my favourite Simple Minds album, so this album had a lot to live up to. It's a good album, but not great, stand out tracks to me were Up on The catwalk and Book of brilliant things. All went downhill like a few other bands when they went to America and became a stadium band along with U2 and Depeche Mode, they all seemed to lose direction and forget what they started out as.
Thanks for sharing + thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
It’s not the best simple minds album but I still like it
Indeed. Thanks for watching the Electronic Cafe. MW
There are a couple of really good hits on the album but it also heralded the transition of SM to be a bleak copy of U2. Away from the unique mysterious sound of the earlier work and to a stadium adjusted style. I am ambivalent to the album…
Thanks for sharing your comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Nice one chaps - made for stadiums - but still some great tunes.
Indeed it was. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Mel gaynor ramped up the sound thats for sure, the stadiums and large arenas were beckoning as their fan base grew, but i think for many fans who loved them from the start this was the point where they stopped being our band for the knowledgeable few,not the bands fault it happens to most acts,i dont play sparkle in the rain that much certainly much, certainly
Thanks comments + for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Fantastic, classic 80s band along with Duran Japan O M D and others. For me, the best album was new gold dream., but to be honest they didn’t really ever put a foot wrong.

@@geraldtir Thank YOU for watching. MW
Thankyou guys.
Love this album.
The colours and shapes of the songs more epic than NGD.
Love the drumming, huge in the mix.
Your comparison to U2 production wise, I never thought about that Till now, Steve Lillywhites production shines !
Glad you enjoyed it!. Thanks for your comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW

Great comments, thanks for sharing. You are right, it's a very LOUD album but still great. Thanks for your support + for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Sons and fascination, sister feelings call get played in my house much more then sitr
Indeed, two great albums. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Same here mate.
As I write I've got 20th Century Promised Land coming out of the speakers ❤
I purchased this album along with Soft Cell's This Last Night in Sodom in early April of 1984. I was in 10th grade and my parents had just moved us a few miles away from the University of Delaware.
Two great purchases. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
I thought the u3 comments made at the time was very lazy journalism
Journalists lazy? ....

Last really good album from Simple Minds. Their zenith as a band. Unfortunately after they got the fame they lost their touch. Still love the band and their early material in particular…
Thanks for your comments and for watching electronic Cafe. MW
sounds like it was make for stadium's concerts
Definitely a change of mindset for SM. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
