    You have "met" a couple of these characters already. Balin, the sweet, white haired dwarf, was the one in the tomb that Gimli cried over in Moria. Bilbo sparing Gollum ultimately saved Middle Earth because no one had the will to resist the Ring and destroy it. Tolkien stated both Gal and Gandalf could wield it to full capacity and the weakened Sauron who’s already been “dead” more than once before already could easily keep him at bey. There were other reasons they rejected the ring entirely. Amazing stuff. Truly. ❤

    • @jmlaw8888
      @jmlaw8888 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@Makkaru112Tolkien outright admitted that Gandalf with the ring would have been worse than Sauron. Because Gandalf was righteous and with his power would "correct" the world towards "good" - which would be awful.
      I imagine it would be the same with Galadriel who basically confronts her will to power within herself when she faces the temptation of the ring.
      But ultimately Tolkien was very wise in seeing the evil in good people thinking they can coerce the world towards good. Were living through that now. No shortage of those who think they know whats best and want to force others to comply. Their "social justice", "equity", "reparations" and "being on the right side of history". Delusional, self assured moral tyrants. THAT is what the ring would turn Gandalf into: a meddler with ultimate power and a desire to "correct" everything towards "good".

    The reason people complain about the graphics for these movies is because Peter Jackson spent so much prep time for LotR that many of the settings, like Minas Tirith, were actually built in miniature, which is why they look so authentic. Also, the actors were in masks and makeup, as the dwarves are in The Hobbit, but the Orcs and so many other things are all CGI so they appear less real. In other words, there are fewer practical effects used in The Hobbit, which grounded the LotR movies in "reality." It felt real.

    • @ronweber1402
      @ronweber1402 10 месяцев назад +4

    So a fun fact: The Stone Giants are one of the most vexxing elements of Tokien's Legendarium because they show up in the Hobbit, but are never mentioned anywhere else directly. Its possible the entire passage is a colourful metaphor, describing the storm causing thunder and lightning strikes dislodging rocks and sending them careening with the wind to be a battle between great Stone Giants, but we cannot be sure.
    The Hobbit was originally not a direct part of his Legendarium, at least not consciously. Some characters had cameos, like Gandalf and Elrond, but it was meant to be something of a standalone story. Eventually when he came to write a sequel (at the request of his publisher) and he began work on The Lord of the Rings he couldn't escape writing it all together with the wider mythology and tales he'd been writing his whole life. Later editions of The Hobbit were even edited slightly to reflect some of the things Tolkien changed for The Lord of the Rings, but the passage about the Giants remained untouched. The real world story of how he creating this incredible universe slowly and over the course of his entire life is fascinating.

    This is a great quote from the first movie: “Frodo: 'It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill Gollum when he had the chance.'
    Gandalf: 'Pity? It's a pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. hold on, it was Gollum searching for Bilbo that led to the dark lord learning the ring had been found and who/where it now could be found. if Bilbo had exterminated Gollum in the Goblin caves Sauron would of remained ignorant of it's existence for perhaps another 500 years or more. it was Gollums obsession for the ring that led to all that happened in the war of the ring. Sauron was confident his Wraiths would secure the possession of the one ring that allowed him to rush his plans for conquest, he was gambling on becoming all powerful before the allies could even react. Gollum plunged all into war through his personal jealousy.

But now it's destroyed forever and all the "what if's" and "maybe's" disappear. Who knows what would have happened if it wasn't destroyed? Perhaps nothing, perhaps the end of man altogether. All we know is what did happen. I do appreciate your logic, though! I fully get and understand it AND it's not wrong or misguided. It's just another "maybe" is all, and an interesting one :)

    Oh Amber… you should know that if Bilbo had killed Gollum, Frodo would’ve kept the ring in Mount Doom. That Gollum bit off Frodo’s finger and danced off the precipice into the lava is what resulted off of Bilbo’s pity.
    Gandalf actually says that pity of Bilbo would be the defining moment.

    Little ones are goblins. Orcs were invented by Tolkien and yeah they're larger. What's fascinating are all the varieties of languages and species created by Tolkien, for example, regular orcs and Uruk-Hai (the super orcs that slew Boromir). I believe there were 12 dialects of the Elvish language, including Sindarin and Quenya. The dwarvish script which you see on the maps. So much lore. It's really incredible what came from Tolkien's mind.

    A far cry from Lord of the Rings BUT still my second favourite film trilogy. If you've ever played tabletop games like D&D, this trilogy is pretty much like a tabletop campaign. A ragtag group on a grand adventure with many poor (but funny) decisions and crazy/silly happenings along the way. And at the end, all the emotions come to the front.
    Also for the record if Bilbo got rid of Gollum, the ring would not have been destroyed, it would have found its way back to Sauron. Gollum was instrumental in the destruction of the ring and Sauron, even if he didn't know or intend it.

    • @GRIZY28
      @GRIZY28 10 месяцев назад

      I never believed any of this . The story would've played out so much differently, that there's no way to say he was needed . If golum was dead he never would've ratted out the Baggins' . Bilbo still would've left after his bday and frodo would still have the ring. The journey to destroy it would have been vastly different and frodo may have not been corrupted bc the journey would be alot faster. So yes golum destroyed it in the end but also 80% of the fellowships problems wouldn't have happened if golum was dead

      @@GRIZY28 It's true that Gollum knew where the ring was, and directed the Nazgul to Shire. But if that hadn't happened, the ring would've still been in Frodo's hands, and it still would've corrupted him, eventually. Either that or Bilbo would have come back for it, since he was still attached to it even when he was close to death.
      Gollum selling out the Shire actually set the plot to destroy the ring in motion.
      The journey also would not be faster, since Frodo and Sam would still split up from the rest of the party due to the fear that the ring would corrupt all of them, but this time they would not have a guide. And during that time wandering around, the ring was already weighing on Frodo. The more time wasted, the more the ring could work on Frodo.
      Sam was ready to go straight into the Black Gates, which would've spelled doom for both of them. Gollum was the one who pulled them away
      Either Frodo would've died on his way to Mordor or he would've been captured and taken to Sauron if Gollum was dead. Hell, Saruman might have gotten the ring early on.
      Gollum also acts as an anchor for Frodo, because Frodo says he has to believe Gollum can come back, otherwise he won't.

Not only does it glow when Orcs and Goblins are around, but because it is of Elvish make, as mentioned in the books, these Elvish swords would slice its foes like butter. It didn't take a great swordsman to handle it. And Bilbo didn't kill Gollum because of what Gandalf said when he gave Bilbo the sword. Don't hastily take a life without real purpose.

There’s a lot more details and possible connections to the LOTR films as well. In this film, there was a deleted or extended scene where Elrond offers a place for Bilbo a place in Rivendell. As we remember it’s the same place that Bilbo goes to stay when he gives up the ring and his old age begins to take affect. Because now we had see Bilbo witnessed Rivendale‘s beauty and peace and tranquility. I love the connection to the first film with Frodo meeting Gandalf, and seeing the dwarfs cleaning Bilbo’s dishes and sing was one of my favorite moments. After this trilogy I highly recommend the series, The Rings of Power as it gives more details to other characters’ origin.

    The enmity between elves and dwarves goes back a very long way. Throughout their mutual history, each race found more grievances to remember against the others. That mutual distrust and hatred was finally put to rest by the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. Remember though, at the beginning, they only tolerated each other.
    Also, in the Tolkein world, goblins and orcs are interchangeable. They were called goblins in The Hobbit and orcs in LOTR. Ultimately, they are a degenerate form of corrupted elf created by the first dark lord, Morgoth.

      The grudge is because of a certain singular clan of dwarves that fricken murdered the greatest elvish king who was born upon middle earth before the sun and moon named Elu Thingol! AKA Elwë (Finwë was his fave brother out of his 5 other bothers.) it’s very complex and so Galadriels gift to Gimli had multiple pronged significance which closes the gap between elves and dwarves. Ontop of that the ultimate dwarf friend was her eldest brother Finrod. Named Felagund by the dwarves of Nargothrond and gave him that dwarvish kingdom as a gift as they created and fortified it together. And Galadriel too was friends with them. Only named Galadriel but later on by Celeborn and she fell in love with it so much that she used it as what’s called the universal name instead of Nerwen or Artanis etc. ❤❤❤❤

      @urthboundmisfit you're right. Peter Jackson explained that's exactly why The Hobbit is three movies. Being aimed at kids, The Hobbit was packed with action, stuff that translated well to film and which you just didn't want to leave out. Being aimed at adults, The Lord of The Rings was packed with page after page of dialogue and histories and poetry and songs, which just wouldn't have made for particularly compelling movie making. I'm rereading the LotR now, and I see exactly what he means.
      I think people who poo poo the decision are just reacting to the number of books either without giving it much thought or without actually having read The Hobbit or the LotR.

      @@aleatharhea Very true. I read LotR recently and its a slog, and I struggled to get through it. Its amazing for sure, but not "action packed" for movie reasons.

    Galadriel is my favorite Tolkien character, and she is as badass in this trilogy as in LotR. Cate Blanchet is scary good at being an elf!

      She read all his books too and her fave character is Galadriel believe it or not! She also said in the documentary of the hobbit that she’d come and do anything that has Galadriel in it so you’ll see her in his future films coming out.

    We get to see Saruman before he was fully corrupted by Sauron. We get to see him still on the side of Light. Even though by then he had secretly been hunting for the Ring for himself.

    I would like to point out that there is a rabbit hole of music covers of Tolkien's poems and songs from RUclips creators that I think you would REALLY like on your music channel. Clamavi de Profundis is one such channel that comes to mind. The Wellermen channel has a cover of Misty Mountains that is AWESOME!

    Thanks for the great reaction!
    Murdering Gollum would have corrupted Bilbo pretty fast. Like Gandalf said in the Mines of Moria it was pity to spare that saved Bilbo from the ring's influence for so long.
    I enjoy these movies a lot even with the varying tone, The Hobbit was a children's book hence the whimsy often appearing, then the film will switch to the darker tone of LotR all of a sudden. It makes the film feel like two different stories stuck together at times. Also, they fill a lot out with action scenes because the studio wanted 3 movies of LotR length even though The Hobbit novel is barely a third the length of the LotR novel. Fun films none the less, for my druthers as a Tolkien fan, I enjoy them more than the LotR films. LotR is a better paced and told film series than The Hobbit but LotR has changes for film narrative that bug me more than the ones done for the Hobbit's film narrative.

    Fili and Kili are actually Thorin's nephews. So even if Thorin did die in that scene, they would've been next in line for the throne. Which they never really explained the relations between the dwarves.

    I love the fact that, in The Fellowship of the Ring," Bilbo is telling the children at his birthday party about his encounter with the trolls and later, Sam and Frodo come upon the trolls as stone statues and Sam says, "Look Mr. Frodo! Bilbo's trolls." It's a small thing but such a great call back.

    You two should really really really watch the hunger games trilogy. I’m sure you’d absolutely love it and for the fact that the prequel is coming out in theatres in November.

    Unfortunately as a fan of the book this trilogy is not something I’m a fan of. Peter Jackson took one children’s book of 300 and something pages and and spun it out into trilogy that bears little resemblance to the book. The 3 Lord of the Rings books are each over 400 pages and each had a film, yet this smaller book gets 3, which means padding that often distorts the story. I could even have lived with 2 films, but 3 just takes it too far. I appreciate the art and the effects but as an adaptation of the book it’s so disappointing, especially after the Lord of the Rings films.

    Bilbo's mercy in sparing Gollum saves Middle Earth. Remember that Frodo is corrupted by the Ring. It is only because Gollum bites the Ring off his finger, and they struggle over it, that the Ring is destroyed.
