This performance was the high point of mid-1990's rock. All the fundamentals are there but the absolutely brutal execution really makes it something special. Thom's voice is transcendental, an otherworldly warning of the pitfalls of emotion and the human condition.
This is a performance for the archives, to be sure. When someone asks you what rock was in the 1990s, show them this and say nothing. Let the music move them.
