I think that is for a variety of reasons, one reason, is I've notice some resellers struggle with change, other sellers, especially the newbies don't like to study the markets by doing in depth research such as, watching business channels, paying attention to social issues that affect businesses online and off line, and others, don't want to put in the work, they think it's just fast easy money they can make. in a retail society nothing stays the same. Just like every season is different from the last season. Every year when Autumn arrives, you will notice, that not every leaf is the same, and last year's leaves were different from this year's leaves.

I was a full time reseller pre pandemic. Garage sales, goodwill, and pawn shops had so much to offer. Then the pandemic happened and everyone decided they wanted to resell. They watched a thousand RUclipsrs that said all this stuff is worth so much money and that spawned MILLIONS of more resellers. I never say I’m a reseller anymore because it has a stigma to it now. Theres just not enough to go around; even 80 year old men are asking for video games at every garage sale. RUclipsrs vlogged themselves and every pre pandemic reseller out a job. None of this is directed at you, just something I’ve wanted to get off my chest for a while and saw your headline.

I think especially with the economy, consumers are expecting lower and lower pricing and as resellers, we put a lot of work and effort and can’t afford to price items so low. I started reselling part time in 2021 with the hope of eventually going full time. Fast forward 3 years, I am 100% content with it staying a part time gig for me because there is just too much uncertainty. Not to mention the burnout. As for the live selling: I see people all the time asking "how are these people making money when they're selling things for $3-$5?" The gag is, THEY'RE NOT and they're just not telling anyone. There is a reseller who was very open about her experience and said she was losing money and that she was going to prioritize Poshmark again because she listed 5 high value items and made more money than she did selling 100 items during a 4 hour show.

    @CountyRoad175 2 месяца назад +9

I completely agree with you. I’ve been a full-time reseller for 10 years and started reselling back in 1992, but I’ve never seen anything like this. The changes Poshmark made have really hurt our sales, and I don’t think they’ll bounce back. Live sales, while enjoyable, have also driven down the value of clothing because people know they can get items for less. After 2020, with retail stores reopening, there’s been a general downturn in retail, especially with the fast fashion industry taking a hit. More people are shopping at places like Goodwill, which increases competition for us.
For me, the biggest change was in social media. I was 100% involved in influencing, teaching, and engaging with the community, but the negativity and lack of appreciation really got to me. I became resentful and started to dislike the entire industry. I ended up erasing my Instagram and stopped making RUclips videos, even though I still enjoy watching yours-so don’t stop! I’ve since pivoted to a new direction that makes me much happier. Now, I use reselling for extra income, listing when I feel like it, whether that’s once every two weeks or 100 items in one week. It’s not the same anymore, and I know it’s not just me. I scaled back from having a warehouse and pursuing a larger business to finding a better path, similar to what you’re doing.

I posted about this on a FB page and was bashed by some sellers who told me they weren’t mind readers and if I wanted the item I should have made an offer myself - yet they complain about slow sales. 😲. They don’t work for it. 85% of my sales are because I send offers. I’ve been selling on 3 platforms since 2017. Selling clothing, in my experience, is one of the most challenging ventures to turn a profit in, unless you have the necessary experience, connections, and infrastructure to support it-qualities which you clearly possess. Clothing is highly accessible to new sellers, who often source their inventory from thrift stores. However, many quickly become disillusioned because the demand and profit margins are simply not there. Smaller operations, in particular, struggle to generate enough demand. Additionally, the prices of new clothing have dropped to the point where they are sometimes cheaper than what is available in online resale markets.
For the most part, I consider the clothing business to be dead for small-time or part-time sellers, which is why so many are exiting the market. Unless you scale up significantly, as you have, I don't see selling clothing as a worthwhile pursuit. I've been a part-time seller for about five years, focusing primarily on electronics. While I've branched out into other areas, including clothing and shoes, I've amassed a dead pile of unsold items. Yet, through this experience, I've learned to identify unique pieces that can command a high price relative to their investment. So, I still occasionally pick up clothing if I know it will sell.
However, there's no way I could sustain my business if clothing were the core of my sales as a small-time seller. To be frank, if it weren't for my expertise in electronics-particularly in repairing and refurbishing them-I would have been out of business long ago. Reselling is extremely tough these days, and not everyone has the additional knowledge required to repair and refurbish items that can actually sell.

Since there has been such an influx in online sales everyone even remotely associated with it has tried to cash in. Shipping companies, thrift stores, and even the online sales platforms are in it to get as much as they can out of it and it does nothing but raise the prices. But isnt that the way it is all over right now?

I agree with everything you said, especially concerning Poshmark. PM does too much algorithm adjusting to and experimenting now, you cant ever reliably make it happy anymore. It makes me not want to sell on PM so that they arent rewarded for changing things up so often.
Reselling is and has always been a side hustle for me, because I cant source enough to make a full time income where I live. But now, Im reconsidering whether or not to continue with even that. I pay $5 on average for my items, I cant compete with resellers who have access to the bins. And on top of that, youre right, alot of people are more comfortable thrifting now than they used to be. So who knows? Im going to stick it out til the end of the year and if things dont pick up I think Ill be liquidating / donating and changing up my routine... and maybe leaving PM all together.

I moved in 3 years ago when things got really bad for me. I am thinking of at least starting online schooling so I have some kind of career or something to fall back on so even if I have to get a "normal" job it's not so many hours so I don't have to over work myself with my issues and I can use reselling as supplemental income

You made some interesting and valid points. What I’m seeing from the resellers on you tube ( I’m not a social media follower) is that they purchased a lot of items that are not desirable or have lost their value due to over saturation and they are trying to downsize. The resellers that keep up with the hot brands and trends are doing well. Either you love it or you don’t. If you love it it’s easy and fun. If it’s not fun anymore do something else. We are multidimensional beings and we can have, do, or be whatever we want if you understand how the universe operates. Thanks for sharing. 💕🥰💓

Dont think its "keeping up" with hot brands, its having access to them. Some resellers are lucky enough to have access to good inventory that is priced cheaply enough to flip. Some dont. For example, my closest bins location is 2.5 hrs away so I source from local thrift, which doesnt have a large amount of "hot brands". Its not I dont know good brands or Im not looking hard enough for them, I go through entire racks, but if youre in a mid sized city with a low income demographic you arent going to be finding much, thats just how it is. I find enough for supplemental income but would literally have to spend all day everyday in Goodwill to make a fulltime income and even then it wouldnt be what I could make in my current career path.
You could also be in a large city but in an area where thrifted items are high priced and you dont have access to the bins easily.

I agree with this! I think some can argue that you can just source online or find other sources for inventory, but that also requires resources that aren’t available for everyone. Great observation, I think your pretty accurate with the state of reselling. My journey was similar, started as a part time reseller in 2013, mostly eBay and then Discogs, but did lots of record conventions. Went full time in 2021, I was cautious and made sure I had a good stockpile of unlisted inventory and a storage setup and sorted. Also saved a good cushion in savings because I wanted to be able to pay bills for a year if something happened and also to buy the good stuff and collections when the opportunity presented itself. My thought would be that some people that started reselling during covid weren’t prepared for a downturn in sales or diversified in knowledge on what things to sell. The longer I have been a reseller the more things I learn, I sell all kinds of crazy things!

It’s not necessarily that everyone is quitting it’s that wannabe resellers are quitting which is good for the rest of us. It’s more that people have gone back to buying in person like they used to. Things always happen like this. When selling online became popular and stores closed I knew eventually online selling would slow down and stores would start opening again, and that’s what has been happening. You also have people leaving the selling platforms and going through Shopify to get their own website. I’ve seen a lot of people saying that they are leaving the selling platforms to go through Shopify.

I think it's more of the economy than anything, and on top of the economy this is an election year. During election years the economy gets weird, because both, businesses and customers pitch pennies until they have an idea of which direction the economy will go. This time around is much different with more social issues happening, and now with the stock market not doing well, and the possibility of a recession, both online and offline, businesses have been slowing down due to the uncertainty, Talking to many people, the majority have been saying, that businesses are starting to cut back and lay off, and they are afraid of how it will affect them, as a result they are saving money. I believe that reselling will once again pick up, how-ever it will take awhile, and whoever stays the course will become a bit wealthy. Why? because when you quit reselling, it will be much better for the season reseller, and for new resellers because, prices will eventually drop, there will be much more merchandise, due to less competition. Remember the old sayings, "What goes up must come down." & "History repeats itself." and this is what we are seeing now. a combination of the the late 1970's into the 1980's & a bit of 2008-2010. I believe we are in a transition and a reset, only difference from the 1970's & the 1980's is we are in a technology age which is still fairly new. I foresee the business world and how we conduct it will completely change.

I closed my eBay store for good last week. I was doing ok, listing 10 per day and selling 7-8 or so. After really looking at the numbers, it just wasn’t worth it anymore. I was paying EBay about 25% per sale (10% promoted - if you don’t, you won’t get traffic). My thrift had nice things but mostly mid stuff you can sell at $20 but at $8 cost and after all the fees, there’s hardly any profit. The banger stuff was rare to find due to GW keeping it for their online store and whatever slips through gets picked up by other resellers. I tried flea market sourcing to lower my COGS but the stuff there is lower quality and tend to sit. Anyway, bottom line is the reselling business environment right now is not that great so it’s time to pivot to something else. Why force it.

I've been a reseller on eBay of and on since it first began and I think they may be shooting themselves in the foot with their promoted listings greed. I tested out their variable promoted listings and was shocked that they took 31% of the sale, far more than what the range was that they indicated it would be. This combined with places like Goodwill now reselling online and hiking in-store prices, it's making it difficult to make a profit.

If anything, the pandemic was way worse than it should have been thanks to Trump ignoring the measures and procedures put in place by prior presidents, including Bush Jr. who was obsessed with preventing a future pandemic. And Trump tying the hands of our global health teams abroad who detect and stop diseases abroad that have the potential to cause a pandemic period! Yeah, let's just put that guy back in office. Makes total sense.
Not to mention, government and the Federal Reserve are separate entities. The President has no authority over the Fed. Currently, it's interest rates that need to come down - that's the Fed's decision. And given this month's reporting on spending and the economy, the Fed is likely to lower rates when they next meet in the fall. None of this, would Trump be able to do anything about.

Honestly, I've been reselling since 2012 and ppl quitting reselling is normal. Some of the big resellers are retiring from reselling or moving on to other things. I love reselling but it does have it's ish, if you take your reselling money and put it in something else you can quit when you want. Reselling saved my azz and I've been able to invest in other things. One day I will quit but not now, I just take breaks.

Love your honesty, what better options are you referring to - ideas in fashion space or different? Thanks ❤

I think it’s different for everyone! I’m focusing on running my store and pursuing RUclips, but I’m not going to be focusing on reselling content anymore

I'm curious who those big names are that are quitting reselling. The ones I follow - Commonwealth Flipper, Hairy Tornado, etc. are going strong.

I'm curious too. Sounds like we watch the same people and they are doing well.

Well hairy tornado recently said RUclips and whatnot are the most revenue. eBay is only like 20% of their revenue now! He also acknowledged that his “content isn’t meant to be relatable anymore, it’s meant to be entertainment.”

MogiBeth, TechNSports, Magical World Of Thrifting, Bargain Hunters Thrift, Cincinnati Picker, Pro Duo Flippers. Ones who have left eBay for other platforms: Philly Flipper, Hairy Tornado, Berner Brothers, Upcycled by Bri, Burbank Sports Cards, Lindey Glenn. It is actually quite an exhaustive list.
