And even Mike Pollock and Kirk Thornton (Shadow and Eggman's VA) had a fan ask a question like this in a Twitter takeover about Eggman and Shadow being family, and calling Shadow "his cousin" (I think he was intending to say uncle but got it wrong 😂). They answered with a weirded tone that it just doesn't work like that. Sorry, I like the headcanons, but I'm just stating facts that have been confirmed and they actually make sense. And it's even weirder when Maria as a character was written as the only person Shadow came closer to feeling "love". The story of both characters is literally inspired by a shojo manga (romance). So yes, Shadow and Maria are canonically best friends, but the reason Maekawa stated to not see them as siblings is also for a reason.
