Having Fescue I can say that young Fescue, as being recently planted within year or so seems to very susceptible to disease. As my fescue has gotten older, I've had way fewer issues. So your theory on this is 100% correct.
I think this year took a toll on me. I have not been on my yard game at all this season. But this video was very therapeutic 😌 for me right now. Thank you
😂 I was one of the people who messaged about the seed heads. What’s funny is my Dad knew what it was that and didn’t bother telling me because he knew I was going to ask you anyway no matter what he said
I am quite and extremely shocked to what I saw on my 8 month old SS1000 TTTF lawn yesterday. There are thousands of weeds seeds. I'm pretty sure it is from dandelions. Looks like I will have million dandelions in front lawn. BIG SIGH OF ANNOYANCE and UPSET! 😔Good luck my friend! Oh, I saw the part where you were talking about cotton seeds. I am not sure, I'll take a close pic.
I know weather varies by region but in the Mid Atlantic we finally have had a true transition from winter to summer also known as Spring! For many years we’ve gone from the 40s and 50s in March to the 80s and 90s in April. Best Spring in many years.
I definitely agree with you on the thickness of a newly seeded lawn! Having it too thick in the early years can cause some problems. I was talking to some fellow lawn friends about that the other day.
Same exact issues in my lawn in Ohio, Ryan. Some kind of disease or fungus but it hasn't been particularly wet for us. Had my heat on 2 days ago. Just a odd year.
I like to mix seed with top soil and starter fertilizer so it doesn't wash away as easy. I just mix it up in a wheelbarrow and rake it in, and that seems to work well.
I see the raised bed in the center of the garden! Cool. I thought that was a good idea when I heard it. Looking forward to the next update on that end as well.
Summer time I usually let my tall fescue grow a inch or two more than normal to do better in the heat (I’m in inland California) I have yet to have disease. But I do cut it low when I know a lot of rain is coming. Humidity I don’t deal with here so this is interesting to see for me how you are going to deal with it. Keep up the awesome work my man!
No offense, but im kind of glad you got poa triv lol. You just explain things very well and I’m going to enjoy seeing how you handle the situation. Not many good videos out there for that issue yet
Believe it or not, buy some Irish Spring soap bars and cut them up and place them in your flower beds. Deer and rabbits don’t like the smell and won’t bother your flowers. Plus it won’t wash away when it rains. I learned that from a neighbor who belongs to a local garden club. It really works.
I have the exact same problem.. Will be an interesting season this year - Can wait to see how you handle the backyard. Thanks for sharing! (Wish I could use fungicides but they are all banned where I live).
I live in Denmark where alle allmost pesticides and all fungicides are restricted to professional use. Thus no PGR and no fungicides and very little herbicides.. it id a Challenge sometimes :)
Funny enough I think Dawn dish soap are banned due to too much methylisothiazolinone ;) hehe.. but as Said thanks for painting these remedies out Will look more into them.
Hey Ryan, i am just glad I applied Propiconazole a week before this crazy humid/rain weather, and cut short (2in) right before rain ... needed to cut short also due to light top dressing work.
Ryan, have you ever considered taking a soil sample and some samples of your grass to a County , City or Town Cooperative Extension Office? I took some samples to our local office, availed myself to the services they offer and gained some valuable insights. In our City, we have a "Master Gardner" who can identify almost anything at a glance. If she doesn't known it about the flora and fauna in the various areas of our city, it's not worth knowing. Your tax dollars pay for those services, you may as well put them to good use.
I'm in Illinois and had the exact same thing happen in my fescue. I put down a curative rate of diseasex down and it has gotten much better, but not completely gone.
I’m seeing mushrooms in areas I’ve never seen them before this year. Really odd. I also did a spring renovation and been watering a ton so that’s the only thing I can think of that’s changed for me is a spring reno for the first time ever. Just put down a fungicide at the preventative rate to try and catch it because temps are supposed to jump about 20-30 degrees this weekend. I’ll be watering that little baby grass a lot! I dethatcher my back yard which didn’t have anything done to it at all and as always it recovers very quickly after beating it up. People like to worry about damaging their lawn but really it will bounce back in no time with some fert and water. That back yard is looking great so far! Cheers!
I’ve got Pythium blight right now...did a dethatch and putting down diseaseex soon. Hoping for a recovery before summer heat. All the best with yours getting back in shape!
Thank you for the clarification on the mushrooms. I have a bunch that always sprout up from when we too down two Silver Maples. Now I just have to get our puppy to stop eating them. 😎
Your Video's are always SO PEACEFUL. Can't wait for more Colder Lawn Climate Information, as I reside here in Way-Western Washington State (Jyst south-by-Southwest) of Seattle, Washington State...
I have never seen anyone mention the density of some fescue and not completely drying because of it but I SURE HAD THIS PROBLEM LAST YEAR. I thought it was me over watering, but it;s good to know I'm not alone!
As always, incredible work! I'm always amazed by how you manage to make every video even better than the last. You're editing style is flawless. You should make a documentary about DIY lawncare. You know all the right people to interview. All you need is an intern researcher, a small crew, and some (I suspect with your portfolio and expertise) relatively easy to get funding. I don't know how you could possibly fit that into your already packed schedule but I do hope it happens some day. I'll come to the premier! Anyways, I've had a relatively dry spring and the lawn looks strong as ever. Usually I try and get some preventative fungicide down before June, but I'm really trying to make my super low input season as low input as possible. I haven't had any disease in the last 3 seasons aside from snow mold. What I'm really trying to say is, "Please, tell me I'm not crazy for skipping my prevent app this season!" You Betcha,
I’ve found Kbg and fescue tend to send up a lot of seed heads, compared to rye doesn’t really ever or it very minimal. This year especially though I’ve noticed a lot of seed head on grass everywhere bc it’s been such a dry spring
I love your videos and I'm lucky that I pretty much share the same exact weather as you (I'm in northern Indiana). I have seed heads and mushrooms actively growing now too.
Mine started doing this just after a few days of warming up with no rain.. then.... Spring came back for a few days cooled off and rained pretty good for a day and it greened back up. I'm not sure if mine is heat/dry areas. 3 spots all 1 to 2' off the street. Was thinking maybe there is something below the services. Looks just like your spots
Last year fungus ate part of my yard. Now I use the propiconazole/azoxystrobin preventative combo at the start of the month May - Sept. (I am in Raleigh, NC) Might want to spray if you got spots because the granular can be slow.
Excess nitrogen is what pythium blight and others diseases thrive on. I’ve read that getting rid of thatch, a decent potassium application and of course no evening watering , can help.
Hi Ryan a couple of ideas about your disease problems have you thought about drag brushing your lawns to knock the moisture off the leaf and using a wetting agent I’ve worked on bowls greens in the Uk and this is what we do to prevent fungal disease hope this can help you out. 👍👍 keep up with the great vids love watching them
Dang, I need somebody with your knowledge where I live! I live in Nebraska and nobody I've called to come look at my lawn has been able to be any help at all. The most information I am able to get out of anybody is simply advice that I need to fertilize my lawn and prevent dandelions and such. I've got like 10 different plants growing in the grass and I only want one pretty green lawn, not a patchwork of random stuff and clover and vine-type things and tall woody grass etc... It's so bumpy too, and everyone just says "it's worms." Like, I've lived in plenty of places with TONS of earthworms, but never had a bumpy lawn because of it. I need help but there's nobody left to call!
Another great video thanks Ryan. I did end up overseeding. I have germination. New grass isn’t growing very fast. I’m getting tired of waiting. I forget when can I stop the watering and go back to 2twice a week?
Hello, it looks like your lawn is in dire need of aeration. Fungi only occur where the water cannot drain properly! btw, what an awesome sunsetting 👍👍👍
What’s worse? 3 mature oak trees putting down 100k acorns in your fescue. Spend days with a backpack blower and a rake trying to get them all picked up. Still end up with hundreds of little oaks coming up. Then spend more days pulling them up. Brutal!
Had a week of high temps here in Jersey and killed part of my front yard. Now I’m fighting to get it back. Plus now some shrooms in the front from the recent rain just had.
The disease ex is not good enough... and you’ll need to treat again in about 7-14 days with another group. Also, hit it with some N to help the turf recover. Think of it as chicken soup when you have a cold. Fescue sure is tough when it comes to fungal problems, good luck!
I use BioAdvanced fungus control (granular) since it controls dollar spot and brown patch, where the Scotts Disease X controls brown patch only. I did an application before all the rains came and so far, so good. However, I'm not spiking the ball just yet. Fert wise, I've only used XGR 8-1-8 this season. HOC @2 inches.
Hey Ryan! My fescue is extremely thick also. Just overseeded KBG sod in a new construction home last September. I used the Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra and I'm surprised how thick it is. I'm wondering if I should dethatch it this fall before overseeding again. Would love your thoughts on that.
I put down black beauty ultra seeds by Jonathon Green, in an overseeding project. It is beautiful grass which is a blend of grasses (and has fescue). After it grew up, we started hitting high temps here in NC and several days of rain. Cue the fungus! And the Brown patch. So, I just put down Bioadvanced granular fungus treatment in only those areas where the Brown patch is, then sprayed the whole yard with Patch Pro to treat the whole yard for fungus. Since its only been a couple days, I'm not sure if it's working or not, but the brown parts of the yard actually look dead 🤐....soooo....I'll just watch and see what happens over the next week.
That's the seed I put down last year too and experiencing the same in Missouri. We had 2 weeks straight of rain and seeing a lot of brown. Hope it clears up with a treatment
I had to put down fungicide. Used Strobe locally sourced for $59/bag. Expensive bc it only last 28 days. Also soil test showed major shortage of potassium so I put down some 0-0-50 SOP. I’m bagging now to help. And top it off with cicadas.
I have read that growth reg can reduce the amount of seed heads, I just wish I could get some in home-owner quantities, instead of a giant thing that will treat acres :)
I have a lawn service and have my fine bladed fescue treated 3 or 4 times during the summer for brown patch. They don't put any type of fertilization on it in June, July, or August. They aerate, seed, and fertilize in September with a couple of late fall, winter, and early spring treatments. I'm in NC and have lots of shade too. The only thing worrying me is the chemicals you put on your lawn where the Westies run around several times a day. My neighbor stopped putting chemicals on his lawn after his dog was diagnosed with lymphoma & died. They always let the treatment dry before letting the dog out but she was a foot licker & the vet thinks that's what happened. Just a thought...
I'm cursed with quack grass (and brown spots) in my 4 acres of fescue. Hoping frequent mowing, aeration, and overseeding will help knock it out. Wishing I would have chosen a different grass seed to plant.
Does POA trivialis start from seed? wonder if you accidentally got some in your seed mixture? Ryan, the backyards looking good bro it's pretty cool that you have two options of high and low. you don't see that much from other lawn nuts ha
I'd leave the mushooms. A healthy network of mycelium goes a long way to assist nutrient transport and disease prevention, the occasional appearance of fruiting bodies is a small price to pay for what they do for your plants. Some people actually spread mycelium spores in their gardens for these benefits. If you want to learn more look up talks/interviews with Paul Stamets. on another note, I'm wondering about tttf trainablity. My lawn is about 50% tttf, the rest a mix of rye and kbg. I had been mowing at 3" which looked good, thick deep green, high resistance to weeds. This height makes for a lot of work when it's time to scalp and dethatch, makes a huge pile of clippings/thatch which takes weeks of topped off yard waste bins before I catch back up. After learning about hoc trainability I lowered the deck to 2" and am loving the more manicured look, and ease of keeping up on thatch removal all the waste fits in the bin, that and the super quick bounce back after dethatching. I recently bought a push reel and dropped hoc to 1 1/4", short enough that I get washboard with the sunjoe reel, but double cutting solves this. everything I've read says that tttf and kbg aren't supposed to be cut this short. so far, the lawn seems to be adapting to it fine though, makes me wonder if these hoc recommendations apply to reel mowed lawns. love the look, but am I doing some long term damage by cutting this short? guess I'll find out how it holds up in late summer heat (pacific northwest btw).
Great video. Perfect timing on a couple things with those seed heads and potential disease... very information, especially the example of the poa annua and grass seed heads, researching in the internet wasn't giving me a 100% positive as to what it was, tight and loose reference was perfect. Pretty sure I just have grass seed heads in the new front yard... the back is a jungle. Any recommendations on the best all-around post- for now and then pre-emergent for before Fall when I seed the new areas for the first time? Maaaaybe 50% grass in my side and back yards and 50% weeds of various kinds (want to kill as much as possible before putting a lot of fresh topsoil down before seeding)... sorry for the long post.
Great videos! I am going to redo an area of my very sunny yard with the TTF. One thing I noticed watching many of your videos is that you do a great job at showing us detail in the grasses around your house and plots but don’t always remind us what type we are looking at. Like many of us, I am not watching chronologically so frequent reminders is a good thing! Maybe you have changed that in more recent episodes but with different projects and grasses, it’s important for the non linear viewer to be reminded of the grass type. Even adding titles to the narrative would help the overall viewer experience. I specifically have been looking at Rye and Fescue but can’t keep straight what is where at your house. And I want to move away from KBG. Probably my bad! Any added, over detailed commentary would be appreciated! And thanks for the straightforward approach on over-seeding. I know I can do this in the fall! Thanks again.
Hi, how can I get rid of Cenchrus Tribuloides (field sandbur) in Spanish we called them guizazo… I have gotten to the point of knee down to removed them from the roots but it is a hard work since they are too many. Any advice? Thank you
Great video. Big fan of what your doing and I find your content very useful! Ive got a pretty large property up here in Ontario Canada and would really like to get your expertise on a few problem areas Ive been trying to figure out!
Mannnn. Your about to get carpenter bees. That bee was looking for a spot to bore. I have been fighting them for years. The usually do not bore new treated lumber but they will sometimes
Put new Fescue sod down back in June, I know, not ideal, but our yard contractor ran longer than expected. My question is, do you recommend to aerate and over seed for the upcoming fall/winter or wait till next season? I have an irrigation system as well. Thanks in advance for any responses.
Most likely Fusarium Wilt is causing the brown patchy look. Cool temps mixed with moisture is the leading problem. Spray fludioxonil and the fusarium should subside.
Ryan do you have suggestions on who I can contact to identify certain grassy weeds I see in my yard? I can take pics if you know someone I can send them to. I’m happy to email them to you as well. I really want to k know what I’m dealing with and don’t know where to go. Thanks a ton! LOVE the feed man!
Make sure they're not seed heads first. I thought my lawns were covered in grassy weeds but turns out it's just seed heads. They look like weeds but they're completely normal.
Having Fescue I can say that young Fescue, as being recently planted within year or so seems to very susceptible to disease. As my fescue has gotten older, I've had way fewer issues. So your theory on this is 100% correct.

Here in NJ we went from 90s to 60s in one night with 6 days of rain. Now we are back in the 90s w humidity.
Throw the D-EX down.
Crazy bro I live in Delaware. It was freezing Saturday night, we almost put the heat on.
Such Gorgeous sky during sunset.
I get your weather shortly after you..😊 and I have the same exact concerns with my fescue
Great episode though..😎👍
Believe it or not, buy some Irish Spring soap bars and cut them up and place them in your flower beds. Deer and rabbits don’t like the smell and won’t bother your flowers. Plus it won’t wash away when it rains. I learned that from a neighbor who belongs to a local garden club. It really works.
7:43 Saved me from a lot of high anxiety, thanks a lot, very useful information!!!
I've found this year has been more noticeable for weed grasses etc, I've never noticed it previously here in the uk
Ireland same story, I have never seen so many weeds in my grass as this year.
here in Germany too
That is why I trust your content. You don’t guess, then throw down product just for the heck of it. Keep educating us!
George, Good Tuesday afternoon to you mate 😎
I have the exact same problem.. Will be an interesting season this year - Can wait to see how you handle the backyard. Thanks for sharing! (Wish I could use fungicides but they are all banned where I live).
Do you live in NY? There are many garden products available in 49 states, except NY. I buy them when I drive outside the state.
I live in Denmark where alle allmost pesticides and all fungicides are restricted to professional use. Thus no PGR and no fungicides and very little herbicides.. it id a Challenge sometimes :)
I am not familiar with that but that is very interesting! Thanks for painting it out - Will for sure have to look into that.
Funny enough I think Dawn dish soap are banned due to too much methylisothiazolinone ;) hehe.. but as Said thanks for painting these remedies out Will look more into them.
Perfectly timed video! My less-than-a-year TTTF is also struggling with some fungus. Please keep us updated as to how your treating it.
Hey Ryan, i am just glad I applied Propiconazole a week before this crazy humid/rain weather, and cut short (2in) right before rain ... needed to cut short also due to light top dressing work.

Tall Fescue/ bluegrass mix.

Great video as always bro. You give great info in a very straightforward easy to understand way. Also, I see you flexing that Galaxy watch!!!
Up here in northern Illinois, we've had very little rain at all this "spring".... Not one decent thunderstorm
Thank you for the clarification on the mushrooms. I have a bunch that always sprout up from when we too down two Silver Maples. Now I just have to get our puppy to stop eating them. 😎

You Betcha,
I've had more Poa this year than I've ever had....it's all dead now so I'll reseed heavy this fall then use pre-emergent next spring
I love my fescue, but it’s definitely a fungus hotbed. I’m battling some rust fungus at the moment. Excellent video as always
I'm having the same issue with the rust! I sprayed some Ortho disease control today, will see how it goes since were going to get a good week of heat!
@@Overpar73 It spreads so darn quickly.
I have the same issue with my fescue. Random brown spots, yellowing and a lot of mushrooms. Think it's a fungus.

Yep, unless it's a fungus that can be grown out, don't feed it Nitrogen, or you will be in a world of shit.
Exactly the problem here in the north east. My grasses have been flowering pretty low for some reasons.
Coming this Fall:
THE RETURN OF THE BLUEGRASS
Just in time!
Cottonwood trees make it look like a snow globe at my house for about a month...uuuuggghhhh!! I despise them. For real, despise!! 😁
Don’t recall you making any videos about plant beds. Is that something you’d be interested in doing on the channel?
Hi Ryan a couple of ideas about your disease problems have you thought about drag brushing your lawns to knock the moisture off the leaf and using a wetting agent I’ve worked on bowls greens in the Uk and this is what we do to prevent fungal disease hope this can help you out. 👍👍 keep up with the great vids love watching them

Another great video! Sunsets were beautiful!!!
It's the fescue rescue!
The seeds could of came from your top dressing / leveling sand last year. Another great video, keep it up.
I am fighting fungus in my yard as well. Your buddy the LCN suggested to also treat with Propiconazole for the 1, 2 punch.
Depends what specific fungus you're dealing with
Same issues in SW Ohio.
My mazama also had tons of seed heads this spring.
My KBG blend is dominating the neighborhood, I will never use anything else.

Welcome in my world in Pacific North West the only difference I was there a month before you.
1 1/2 lbs for $125 is a great investment, you'll get 2-3 apps for a few years!
Yard is looking amazing Ryan
Love the fescue content.
If you have problems with fungus you can try to cut shorter. That way the soil drys quicker and fungi have a very hard time suriving.
Already at 2.5"
@@ryanknorrlawncare I mow my cool season lawn at 0.709" or 18mm. You just need the right varity to surrive that. But I guess you already know that.
When POA start seeding the birds eat those seeds and if they fly over your lawn and poo, Guess what they will drop a seed that did not digest.
Thank you I thought I had Poa everywhere!
What is POA?
@@BodyByKymXclusive annual bluegrass. It’s a pain in the ass to get rid of.
It could be poa trivialis. Those seed heads are closer to blue grass.
I'm always amazed that mushrooms can grow in my front yard where there is ZERO shade.
The cotton is just starting to blow here in The Twin Cities.
It is actually hilarious to watch these vids and see someone obsess over their lawn like this 😂
Cool story bro
Helicopters......damn helicopters I think are finally gone here in my lawn in Ohio. Things were everywhere!
Great vid man!
Great video and update on everything. Would like to see more on the KBG plots.
3 garbage bins?! Fancy!

Been dealing with fungus issues for my first time this year
Hey! What were you using to Sharpen that blade? Flap Disk or Sanding pad? What Grit, etc?
Any advice? Thank you
Thumbs up , Ryan.
When do you mow after it’s rained almost non-stop for 5 days straight?
Same thing happening in RI.
