I loved watching him too in those years.. but seeing his matches from 1977-1984 it just doesn't seem right to pretend he was the same player in his later years, because he wasn't. Wally Masur differenciates between "Mark one" McEnroe (before his "mid career hiatus") and "Mark two" McEnroe, and I feel he has a point.
McEnroe was so thin here. Physically he was not at his best and mentally he was elsewhere. Massive shadow of former self. 84 mac would have struggled not to bagel annacone for the match.

The decline started in 85 but was complete by 87. Blown away by the hard hitting players Curran, Lendl,Annacone, Becker and so many others.

That's unfair. Bad day for mac but he played awesome tennis at times through 88-90. A level below his best though I agree.
