    you'll be happy to know most of that stuff that you're scrapping off the hull floor isnt actually rust, its the bitumen paint that was originally painted on the floor to protected it. Your best bet is to scrape it, dry it, use a rust converter then cover that with a bitumen interior paint (i use hempel)

      oh really that's interesting because we thought it seamed like a film, and t once the bottom was dry it actually looked in really good shape. thanks so much for your suggestions Luke :)

    Hi, I’ve been married over 40 years and in that time we have done many diy projects. At some point you will say I wish I never started this. That’s when it’s time for a really long walk, holding hands and remembering the excitement you felt and the end goal. Sending positive thoughts. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you.❤️

      so so true, the last thing I want is for us to rip everything out, we want to really start our adventure, that's why we brought one, hopefully this makes room for an awesome new study and with a bit of luck the rest of the boat is fine, fingers crossed, thanks so much

      Aww thanks, we’re looking at it as a positive way to learn about our boat and boaty ways before we travel our full time, it’s more time consuming than anything, there doesn’t seam to be a huge amount of damage at this stage 🤞

      @@TheNomadicCrobot Could be as simple as a little pad welding to fill the thinner bits which can be done from the inside. I think a rough estimate is 10mm of rust is 1 mm of steel. Would give a save estimate of .5mm of steel removed from bottom by scraping but it looks like something close to 3-4mm in those low points is removed from the inside.

    The title was indeed correct, horrendous......... No amount of advice or hindsight will change what you have found or the amount of graft you will have to put into this boat, but wow guys, you just get on with it. It expect it would cost a fair sum of money to get lifted, inspected and possible re-plating, so I guess doing what your doing is as realistic as it gets. Becks is a keeper, what a girl and when that lady puts her mind to something, its getting done, well done, but in those moments of despair, walk away and take time for yourself. Great video guys and great to watch your progress.

    Hi,so happy that it looks like the Hull sound.im going through the same as you.bought my narrowboat in July hoping too be on water in a few weeks,but unfortunately lots of problems so still in dry Dock.loads of hidden rust,spent £1200 on new plating everywhere. I have lifted a couple of floorboards & as you may guess the dreaded water.upto now 8 buckets of water,its only a few mm,takes about 8 hours to fill 1 bucket.i am hoping it is water leaking from old shower & chimney & windows,but I think will have to take all floorboards up like you to check.i admire you both so much with the work you doing,you are an inspiration to me too carry on.wish my girlfriend was like becca,mine helped me for 2 days & give up.lol.all the best tony

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  2 года назад +1

      so sorry to hear, it can be so heartbreaking, we do think the truth of the matter is a lot of boats actually have this problem as a lot of inspection hatches are hard to access and the bilges will always collect water at some point so will need clearing, try and stay positive and use it as a great opportunity to get to know your boat, boat life is truly amazing and it will all be worth it in the end , good luck to you and your boat adventure and see you on the rivers and canals soon :)

    love watching your journey on here, but trying to binge watch is very difficult trying to get them in the right order.. May I suggest you put the blog number in the title..all the best on your future life. PS we were clearing rust from a 50 ton historic tug boat when we went through the hull..!! Got it fixed before the tide came right in, There is a substance called Aquasteel that we use aboard. It converts rust back to metal and is also a primer. Not cheap but a little goes a long way.. If you do use it pour a little into a container and brush it on, keep the main container closed and do not return any unused to the original container.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  2 года назад

      Oh god that sounds really unfortunate, luckily you saved the boat before it was to late, yea we ha e just put our first few coats of something similar to aqua steel. Seams to have come out lovely, Thanks for your feedback on numbering the he episodes we really do appreciate knowing these things, I have added a playlist to our channel starting from the day we purchased the boat, does that help at all?? Thanks again and good luck with your own amazing boaty journey 😀

    Ah I feel your pain. I've owned my preloved boat for nearly a year, a couple of months ago the floor started to go spongy. A bit of exploratory digging later & it looks like I'll have to replace the whole floor due to wet-rot spreading through the ply.
    Looks like someone just put a new ply floor over the previously rotting ply floor, then laid wood effect vinyl over it.
    It passed it's survey with flying colours. It's amazing what isn't picked up in a survey.
    Best of luck!

      It really is, they can miss quite a lot really, they seam to get the structural stuff more but even then warn in the terms and conditions that things can be missed, sorry to hear you have to go through this it’s a real time consuming job, not overly expensive, just a lot of hard work. It’s surprising how many heartless people there are that are willing to cheat a sale and hide major faults just for there own happiness and profit,luckily the boat market is booming so you should still be able to make a positive from your purchase 😀

    We found the exact same problem in the back of our boat when we bought it nearly a year ago. As it turned out the standing water was only the first symptom of a badly kept boat that had many other issues which have taken the last year and many months more to resolve. I'm proud of what I've accomplished and learned a lot from the process, but honestly in retrospect I wish I had backed out at the first sign of trouble, while I still might have had the chance

    I’d be checking my water tank bottom as well, hopefully it’s not rusted. What a mess to find, fingers crossed there are no holes in the hull. Whoever sold this had to have known about this, wouldn’t you think? Are there any records that came with it as to when she was last hauled out and surveyed? I don’t know the laws there but here there’s a law about non-disclosure the seller is liable for. If they know something is wrong with something they are selling and don’t tell the purchaser that’s non-disclosure and you can take them to court to return your money or to pay to fix whatever they hid. Might be worth checking out. Good luck, hope it’s not serious🤞

      hi, thanks for your interest and comment, the water tank is rusty and does need a bit of work unfortunately, it seams the leak was coming from the hot water tank, but we also found a few other leaky areas. Im quite sure the seller would have known but we've actually gotten it quite tidy now, we did have a survey from a year ago from a legit surveyor who we even talked to on the phone , but it seams he probably missed this unfortunately, probably why the seller tried to sell the boat quickly, as bad as it looks we honestly don't think it will be long until we have the boat ready for our adventure, thanks again :)

      There is some ballast in there we just haven’t reached it yet, hopefully the bottom of the boat is the only bit we have to do as the water should have only really sat down there but will see, whatever happens we’re going to have fun doing it 😀😅

    I see you've now got a wet vac, have you got the nappies yet ?
    The way I check the bilge is add ballast to one side at the rear and allow the water to collect and vac it out, then place some nappies down to absorb anything left and leave for 24hrs then remove and replace them to see if they absorb anymore.

    I know this may be ugly talk but does this mean you've got to pull up the whole oak floor and clean the bottom like that from stem to stern? I don't see any ballast bricks down in the bedroom area so if there is any ballast in the boat, that's got to be the lowest point I'm guessing. Great positive attitudes guys! When is your next inspection due on the hull where an inspector comes out and measures the thickness of the hull?

      No a previous owner had an 8mm base plate added to the boat for when he took it over to Ireland by sea, so it does have a very heavy sturdy hull 😀

    • @DeneHickey

      How do you know the thickness of the Hull base plate? Without having taken it out of the water. I'm surprised that a narrow boat crossed the Irish sea. Living in Dublin was looking to buy one pre-brexit from the UK. My understanding is they come over on a lorry.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  2 года назад +1

      A previous previous owner supposedly an 8mm base plate added so that the boat would handle better over the sea, we had a previous survey from a year ago and we chatted to the surveyor that carried out that survey too just for extra information
