    Interesting vid. I've been sort of thinking about this recently. Partially due to reading stuff by Matthew B. Crawford (Shopcraft As Soulcraft), especially his book The World Beyond Your Head he kind of touches on this kind of thing, at least tangentially.
    I recently restarted drawing at 53 after having not even thought about since high school. And especially when it comes to drawing I'm definitely with you. There's just something about the immediateness of the way physical materials respond to your actions, respond to YOU--the friction, etc--that just isn't the same in digital. I have experience with digital to compare, I also recently got a drawing pad and Painter to give me a substitute for painting which I'm interested in trying. I'm really interested in doing oils but I really don't have the space or ventilation where I am to do it yet. (Although I might try watercolor, that I could do.) All that being said there are some aspects of digital painting I am warming to, but we'll see...
    There's just something about doing it on computer equipment/software that just puts additional, "layers", let's call them, between you and the end product that produces a kind of disembodied experience. Control of the pen, control of your hand, the layer that the pad creates--mine is a separate pad, not a screen you draw on, which makes it even worse; trying to control/predict what the software's going to do, the computer--god forbid it lags, and on and on. There's just something so much more direct about interfacing with materials in reality.
    Although, strangely, when it comes to composing music (I'm a composer, which is what my degree was in) I prefer using a computer program to write. Not sure what's up with that....

    • @SchaeferArt
      @SchaeferArt  2 года назад +4

      I'm completely with you. It's funny that you mentioned composing and music - I'm not a composer but I do make music just as a hobby in my spare time. I have a keyboard and guitar but I also find making melodies and things so much easier and straightforward on the computer haha. Being able to easily change the tempo and re-arrange shapes to make a melody - My guess is maybe because I'm a more visual person. That's an interesting thought though, thanks for sharing! :)

    I prefer traditional art because of the energy and feel. It does take a different kind of thought process. I like digital art because it makes it easier to practice at any given time. I love the vibrancy… however, the shortcuts takes some of the magic away

    I guess I'm the minority here by saying I prefer drawing digitally. For me I love having as much control over my piece as possible, and digital is a lot more forgiving to me. I started doing traditional art and drawing on paper, and as i transitioned to digital it was like learning to draw all over again. However, my end goal has always been to draw digitally, and I'm thankful it "clicks" with me.
    I wholeheartedly agree that whatever you choose to excel at, do it because you love it.

    This is my first time watching one of your videos and it is refreshing to hear your thoughts. My background is in calligraphy and I love pen and ink and paper. There's a great shift towards/embracing of digital calligraphy and lettering at the moment. I bought an ipad just to be a part of it but then found myself hating every second of it. We are not all born to embrace the digital way and that's just fine. The good thing is that you tried it and now you know. I started drawing again recently and I can't imagine doing it digitally. I know myself now. Look forward to watching more of your videos. I came here after Alpay Efe mentioned you on one of his.

    I have a similar difficulty, but I'm trying to push through. I love the thought of being able to paint, but I can barely draw. I know it would be good to learn the basics first, but it's always hard to get excited about the grind when you're not producing anything worth looking at. Really I just see art as another progression to telling my stories and capturing that emotion. That’s the main reason I want to draw.
      I also have thought about doing animation as a career and helping other artists get their art on the big screen.

    I prefer digital because there are less tools to use, but more choices…for example, I can use pastel, acrylic, pencil, oils and markers without the set up or the mess. Also, I have two cats, so I don’t have to worry about leaving out potentially toxic objects for them to get their paws on. I don’t have to worry about storage, purchasing paper, erasers or such. I can do it in my bed, outside during lunch, on the bus, anywhere I get the inspiration. I’m a beginner to both, actually. But I’m doing this for my own pleasure, not for publicity or monetary gain. Plus, I use drawing books to practice sketching on my iPad as well. It’s a win win to me and I’m glad there are more choices.

That's the reason I started sketching traditionally and recreating it in Photoshop. I don't pressure myself much. I think what will help me to improve is to just enjoy creating something even if it's not good enough for me. Just doing it for the sake of enjoying it and not expecting so much that I will be good at it anytime soon.

    Oil, sometimes charcoal. Tried digital as well but didn't click, returned to traditional.
    If you use texture or glazing the digital doesn't compare with traditional/oil. The 3D effect given by texture and transparency of the glazes just cannot be reproduced by digital painting.
    The oil drawings look different depending on the light, I think it has to do with the pigments/layers, type of light. Cannot explain it - for me they look alive.
