I don't think it's a question of "Which system/art is more powerful", rather it's which practitioner is better at applying their respective discipline to the situation. A lot of people, on paper, are awesome, but they may just not have the talent/interest/experience in that particular setting. Would love to see some free sparring - sometimes the best strategies come from having none/adapting on the fly.
Kali is more based in movement and positioning as far as defense tho. So while it might look nice when properly done, like he said in the video, you have be in the right position in order to pull it off. It does look cool tho. But honestly, by the time you ever get to that, you'll probably have been striked 10 to 20 times already against Kali.
I’ve been involved with a couple of street fights back in the day, and I’ve had my share of black eyes, bruises, and cuts. But one thing I learned when provoked; I let my opponent throw the first punch or kick so I can hit the elbow or knee. Then I go for the ribs and the neck, that’s about it, after which I walk away or run, no good standing over waiting for some other person throwing a cheap shot at me.
Kali ❤️ I saw how it really works when I was a kid my grandpa know kali and he use it to the real attacker I was shock, amaze and nervous how fast it’s works it’s really effective my grandpa got the knife on the attacker. Just a easy snap it’s really effective. ❤️💯👊🏼👍🏼 FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS (FMA)
I think the most powerful martial art is the one you're dedicated to - so long as you gain experience defending against other styles. This is one reason why I've thought tournaments, where multiple styles are represented, are important. Schools that don't compete, or compete with only those of their own style, are missing out on allot.
Hey guys. EXCELLENT comparison! I was trained in Kali in my service days...and it is damn effective, especially in Military applications. However, in civil existence i had a chance to full on spar with a Mantis style expert...no pads and full contact..full speed...and I got to say one thing..."I would not want to do it again😁!" Great job guys!!! Kudos to both of you!
You can see the major differences in the style of the arts between the two. For this demonstration, Kung Fu is always trying to force a distance in order to get away from the fight. For Kali, which is I think the point of the art, is to always have the close encounter when dealing a problem. In Kali, creating space is a form of stalemate or a chance to run away. But when stuck in a corner or a small alley way, getting in close quarter is the best chance to fight for Kali. With that said, they are 2 different styles when dealing a fight! For me, I think Kung Fu is a good way to really get away from a fight, especially when you just want to create some distance, run away, and not deal with it. Kali deals the problem in close quarters, which has a chance of getting hurt in the process; hence, a last resort when stuck in a corner. Certainly, Kali can be effective in distance fighting, especially when you have weapons. I'm just assuming, for the sake of the demonstration shown, that it is only a hand-to-hand combat.
Different forms of Kung Fu can vary widely. Some are best in wide open spaces however, Wing Chun like Kali are best in tight confined spaces like in a bathroom or a bar.
Jake, I want to also say that you have the most positive attitude i have ever seen in a martial arts instructor. You can't stay in a bad mood with you. :)
As an Okinowan karate guy, I still think you're going to get into trouble with those high spinning kicks, but if you're able to change directions after a miss into a sweep, that's pretty cool.
@@fortyozfreedom3456 Lol. Kali is used in the Visayas. Kali means pag kal kal ng lupa or digging. They used movements related to farming to train thus the name Kali.

By exposing your back with that spinning back kick you jeopardize taking a blade in the kidney. In the street always assume they are armed. The first punch could just be a distraction.
Thanks for this demo and comparison. Props to Jake for also dismantling the take downs from another angle - only a few MA enthusiasts here in YT are that considerate. This was quite insightful. I also got interested in kali because of how it was used in a Japanese TV series starring Junichi Okada. I was aware of how kali was similar to krav maga and silat but I never thought to really compare it against traditional Chinese martial arts. Well, this clip has me convinced that kali's natural flexibility has an edge over the Chinese martial arts techniques used in this clip. I am, however, also interested to see how kali stacks up against bajiquan or even wing chun. I'll drop by Paul's channel next.
My dad and I practice Kali footwork to minimize the distance between me and the opponent to avoid getting kicked. It's also a quicker way to break the wind pipe, break joints, and blind grapplers. Being a girl I always hated getting close to the enemy so I prefer armed combat. But 10 years later he confessed why he avoided the kicking distance--- he can't do high Sikaran kicks (Filipino art like Taekwando) because his huge belly always gets in the way
Thats where bruce lee got the foot work danny inosoto his training partner is a filipino. He could have learned the foot work from danny, and integrate it with wing chun. And also added the kali technique... And other matial arts move ang introduce bruce lees own style of martial arts... Interesting...
I think this is the best martial art video i've seen in my entire life. No exaggeration, no bullshit. Why? It does not only give me the idea of what the topic, Kung-Fu vs. Kali, is all about but the presentor/s also demonstrate it. The best part is in here 10:14 where they both show the advantage of one over the other, how to counter it, the alternative move if this one action is taken instead of the other one, and among others. They simply shown that there is no martial art that is superior than the other one. The superiority of one MA is determined to whoever execute it better. Meaning, it depends on the person. Good job.
I think the hook sweep won’t be fast enough for the elbow because the “block” of kali will add momentum to your kick. Basically you need to stop the momentum before you can hook sweep.
Kali is what may have influenced Okinawan martial arts, mixed with fujian white Crain from China for its hard, linear attacks-but also give karate it’s interplay between relaxation and tension. Fujian white Crain most probably influenced the early fighting systems, like tang-te (Chinese hand-parent martial art to karate), Kali and many more.
Kungfu will never win against kali. Chinese lost in Korean War against Philippines. Where there was a time they run out of ammunition. They waited at night and did hand to hand combat. The whole war. 4,000 filipino against 25,000-40,000 Chinese. Around around 24 died filipino and injury 70-100. Chinese lost 8,000 soldiers and thousands of injured
I'm late to the party I know, I'll use the one I need too. Speed and then after that more Speed. I believe in both styles. Sometimes it depends on who you're fighting. AND Good Luck. I'd rather walk away.
If you combine Cali, and a martial art that focuses on defense you could probably beat anyone unless it's a really good fighter, or an unpredictable person
a hybrid of both of these styles would be unbeatable .. i think thats what you guys were trying to say to us right? i learned alot from this short video. thanks Jake and Paul! Id love to see more of these
It's hilarious how Kali just dodges anything without even thinking... And that's why Kali is still the most dangerous martial art even special forces want to learn, it's just "natural"
Do you think that when the Shaolin Monks created Kung Fu, there were movies or that those fighters were actors? No, of course. There are many movies where Kung Fu is shown in a distractive way, but that doesn't mean it's only good in movies. Don't speak when you don't even practice that art.

This is considerably a good demonstration because kali is designed to also overcome the advantage in size, number and weaponry of the enemies, which at the time of its inception were the foreign invaders (Spaniards).
From this video, I think Kali came out ahead.. though Jake and Kung Fu may well come out ahead in any other exchange. (Particularly if we just say 'Kung Fu' which encompasses so much!) Particularly, the strike deflection combined with limb immobilization (striking the bicep and the like).. though to avoid some of Jake's strikes, the Kali requires a lot of successful evasive footwork whereas Jake's strikes were his defenses for the most part. Even still, the odds of getting in there and owning a street fight once you incapacitate the arms and start raining blows on the head are pretty decent.. the spinning/sweeping kicks could end the fight if they hit, but if they're caught, anticipated or miss, they open up the possibility to have the supporting leg kicked out / broken, the leg caught, or the kick evaded followed by a window where the opponent can close/attempt a strike while the spin is completed. You've both trained enough and both arts have enough techniques that I think it would come down to who had more practical training rather than which art is 'better'.
Actually their both effective and do compliment each other the Kali is more offensive as for the Kung Fu it's more defensive. It's really up to the individual to hurt or incapacitate. You guys are awesome!
I can’t speak about the Kali shown here, but the “Kung fu” is anything but authentic, genuine, or real. It looks more like a poor boxing style parry full of flying elbow disease and some TKD or kickboxing style kicking. None of the actual strengths of any legitimate style of Kung Fu are showcased here. You mention animal styles, such as mantis, tiger, monkey, and crane, but where are they? Where is the 5 element theory, bridge control, or trapping? Where is the unification of your legs, waist, spine, and arms in your blocking and striking? What are the 4 gates? Real Kung fu has these things and real Kung fu masters use and explain them.
I love the comparison of the two styles and how each style trains the mind and body in specific ways, however, it also shows what I believe to be most true. There is no superior martial science (or art if you will) just superior practitioners. Great video. :)
Very nice video and choreography. I love both Kali and Kung Fu. But just to put it out there Kung Fu is a general term, there are a lot of styles and schools under the term "kung fu". Kung fu in Chinese just means acquired skills thru time (lots of repetition). And I totally agree with Max Ante "Its not the Art that makes a Man, It's the Man that makes the Art". If there is a perfect martial arts then everyone would be using it. : )

Exactly, anyone can be a kali/arnis/escrima practitioner. Have you seen videos of GM Rene Tongson? His movements are very natural, fast and deadly (and he is an older guy). Our Arnis club had him over once, it was very cool :D
Kali is used by American army and Russian spetsnaz. Not just for streets
@@aca5599 wait, so foreign military used Kali too now huh? I thought only Philippine military(mostly marines) and Police used Kali...well at least I learn something new....

what I love about you Jake, is that you are constantly working on improving yourself, your ego has really taken a back burner over the years. Stay humble, train hard :) thanks for all your awesome videos!
The first kung fu move he showed was a sweep kick. Doesn't really work in actual fights. That's just childish, dude.
good for movie though..hahaha
It actually works, you just have to train with the monks for years.
nope, it actually works in team LAKAY :)
Though I think kali is more practical, that hook sweep is nice.
kali has a ton of base manipulation in it.
Yeah but it is impractical
Kali is more based in movement and positioning as far as defense tho. So while it might look nice when properly done, like he said in the video, you have be in the right position in order to pull it off. It does look cool tho. But honestly, by the time you ever get to that, you'll probably have been striked 10 to 20 times already against Kali.
I think his hook sweep was a last ditch effort, and he seemed to know it was kind of a weak effort.
Hook sweep, nice in a staged kung fu film.... Too flashy. Get straight to the business end. In, kill and out
I’ve been involved with a couple of street fights back in the day, and I’ve had my share of black eyes, bruises, and cuts.
Nice good wow
Are you filipino?
I think the most powerful martial art is the one you're dedicated to - so long as you gain experience defending against other styles. This is one reason why I've thought tournaments, where multiple styles are represented, are important. Schools that don't compete, or compete with only those of their own style, are missing out on allot.
That was Bruce Lee's philosophy.
Cool video guys! Started Kali in 2014 and I love it to death. Was cool to see how it stacked up against Kung Fu. Love those spin kicks Jake.
Kali and silat is battlefield proven arts. Finding a legit instructor that can teach you is the hard part.
Why debate which style is powerful, i prefer fusing all styles and make it more powerful. That shoud be the mentality. Thanks peace.
Amen to that!
Agreed.
So MMA
Jeet Kune do
Bruce is that you?
Jake, I want to also say that you have the most positive attitude i have ever seen in a martial arts instructor. You can't stay in a bad mood with you. :)
As an Okinowan karate guy, I still think you're going to get into trouble with those high spinning kicks, but if you're able to change directions after a miss into a sweep, that's pretty cool.
They're having fun and learning at the same time. I want that.
Cool! I'm a filipino but this is the first time I heard the matial art Kali. Wow! Now I wanna learn...
It's just a different name but still similar to eskrima and arnis.
Kali is the name popularized in the united states. In the motherland land its known as Arnis or Escrima.
@@fortyozfreedom3456 Lol. Kali is used in the Visayas. Kali means pag kal kal ng lupa or digging. They used movements related to farming to train thus the name Kali.
@@joshrillo yes, i am aware of that. If you read my comment again i just said that kali was the "popularized" name in the united states. It was never known as arnis or escrima in the united states which led the rest of the world(via hollywood) to only familiarize with the "kali" name. I also know that kali means bury/dig
@@fortyozfreedom3456 Oh. Cool.
So basically, if you master Kali and self-defense, you're pretty much a formidable opponent.
Sadly you need to torture yourself to learn Kali, not to mention master it.

lol i trained kali under my uncle and he almost killed me a few hundred to thousand times lol
PS: Im from Philippines btw and yes im filipino
It depend to a person.
By exposing your back with that spinning back kick you jeopardize taking a blade in the kidney. In the street always assume they are armed. The first punch could just be a distraction.
It doesn't matter if you learned lots of moves if you practice alone, without experience you'll get nervous...
U got me

Just watch the riot police against the moob on the street 😂😂😂
OUTSTANDING guys everything in every art has its power I SAY LEARN THEM ALL AND THEN EXTRACT ALL THINGS POWERFUL THEN COMBINE THEM IN A PRACTICAL WAY
My dad and I practice Kali footwork to minimize the distance between me and the opponent to avoid getting kicked. It's also a quicker way to break the wind pipe, break joints, and blind grapplers. Being a girl I always hated getting close to the enemy so I prefer armed combat. But 10 years later he confessed why he avoided the kicking distance--- he can't do high Sikaran kicks (Filipino art like Taekwando) because his huge belly always gets in the way
Because of my major we have been under pressure in learning kali and I'm loving it! 😆
Kali is not a joke..cuz I visit in Phil. To learn it..
I agree with you .

I love how both of you share your knowledge from each side of the arts while respecting other practitioner.
Great video buddy.
Thats where bruce lee got the foot work danny inosoto his training partner is a filipino. He could have learned the foot work from danny, and integrate it with wing chun. And also added the kali technique... And other matial arts move ang introduce bruce lees own style of martial arts... Interesting...
inosanto
The thing about Jet kun Do which bruce lee use is it doesn't have a definite art form for it came from different various martial arts.
Bruce lee incorporated the footwork in fencing to JKD
i believe bruce lee developed his own martial art by taking what is useful
This is beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing
Kali is way more effective. Fancy spinning kicks are really hard to land on a real fight.
Good job.
In a real life situation, we already know whos gonna get wrecked..

@@Chosen-of-Khorne ah ok
I think the hook sweep won’t be fast enough for the elbow because the “block” of kali will add momentum to your kick. Basically you need to stop the momentum before you can hook sweep.
The Winner Is...Not Jacob Rydberg, lol. Stop disgracing Chinese Martial Arts and Kali!
you guys are lethal! very exciting video! thanks for sharing

I really enjoy this video as you are talking and showing what are the option and as well as how to continue to fight one another.

Yes, I always enjoy seeing how arts are similar and how they could compliment each other. Thanks for watching Doug :)
Some good creative stuff..thanks guys...
It's hilarious how Kali just dodges anything without even thinking... And that's why Kali is still the most dangerous martial art even special forces want to learn, it's just "natural"
Thanks for the demo...excellent...
Kali sorry Jake

Sorry too👊👊👊
Man i follow both yalls channels yet this is the first time im seeing this yall are amazing :)
I like how Kali keeps balance while effectively switching weight.
It's not necessarily a question of which style is better, but which individual is more skilled.
Kung fu is for movies and kali is for actual fight
Do you think that when the Shaolin Monks created Kung Fu, there were movies or that those fighters were actors? No, of course. There are many movies where Kung Fu is shown in a distractive way, but that doesn't mean it's only good in movies. Don't speak when you don't even practice that art.
@@ruiFF77 then have you seen kung fu in actual fight like MMA?? Kalk is being use in Philippine army... What about kung fu?? Can you do the jackie chan moves in actual fight??

One move that can defeat any known man The "Nut crack"
This is considerably a good demonstration because kali is designed to also overcome the advantage in size, number and weaponry of the enemies, which at the time of its inception were the foreign invaders (Spaniards).
From this video, I think Kali came out ahead.. though Jake and Kung Fu may well come out ahead in any other exchange. (Particularly if we just say 'Kung Fu' which encompasses so much!)
Particularly, the strike deflection combined with limb immobilization (striking the bicep and the like).. though to avoid some of Jake's strikes, the Kali requires a lot of successful evasive footwork whereas Jake's strikes were his defenses for the most part.
Hello paul.instead of colaborating with a real kung fu practitioner you decided to team up with mr fake
Not a lot of people want to collaborate with me :(
hey paul, if only you're in the Philippines, try to collaborate with the peeps in Rizal Park.
Let me sparr with jake, ill try my pangamot!
At 4:50 he says ill duck under your punch. Guy looks at camera and is like wtf are you serious? His look is priceless.
In actual fight, these things don’t really apply
I love the breakdown of this video. It's really cool
BakMeiLorne i cannot tell if u fo real but i can say you are a great keyboard warrior
Nice demo. Tactics like these can be practical in real survival street fight, but in a really focused and relaxed, and power strike way.

Kali yes, (split entry) spinning techniques no.

I use empty hand kali or panantukan in a real fight lol
