- Hi folks, so this guitar came by for some work and subtle but cool mods. Honestly, ive been lucky to play a few customshops, real 60s fenders and the others - this is one of the best ive ever played. And bear in mind i speak for THIS guitar, maybe the others are as good? The owner has a wonderful telecaster!
What do you think of the guitar and the changes? Thanks for being here, getting involved - until next time!

Awesome demo , thanks man !
Thanks for watching 🤘
I like the white switch top hat! The reason it was there is not randome. Jason Isbel had a white pickguard with that matched the white switch top hat but he changed the pickguard to black and just sort of left the white top hat switch cap there. That's what made it an authentic Jason Isbel custome. The back plate with the eagle emblem was a tatoo he and his wife got when they visited the Neatheerlands. Though my interest is in Jazz, I purchased that same guitar last week as I also do love learning to play country twang chicken pickin style and BTW switch on the neck and lower the tone and man it has an amazing jazz tone! Cheers!
I have only seen this one and 1 more so far, im curious does the one you got also have a super dark rosewood board?
It seems they really stepped up the rosewood selection for these guitars.
@@Paul-D No as a matter of fact, I was abit worried as the rosewood wasn't dark enough. It was out in the store "open box" for a year so maybe if I treat the wood the color will come out. I will feature the guitar on my channel this weekend. I will also reveal what the seller did to me on Reverb. Bad deal and did not deliver it as per the pictures they posted and was missing some parts and changed the white hat top to black and though he promise to replace them I was a bit bummed. Oh well it plays and feels like a dream and that is what counts! It's the princiupla behind the purchase that ticked me off. Afterall it is not a cheap guitar....
Ah interesting, maybe thats the case yeh im abit fanatical about rosewood so always first thing i spot haha.
Ill check the video out when you put it out 🤘
@@Paul-D The Robert Cray hardtail strats come with beautiful dark ROSEWOOD fretboards too, never went to Pau Ferro or Laurel like they other Mexican made models. The two I have had weighed 7.1 pounds, very light weight and resonant, but I digress.
Dang, you made it look exactly like my classic vibe 60's custom telecaster 😁
Blacl guard belongs on tje butterscotch haa
I've liked this Tele since its release, but haven't seen one in person.
Nice little mods...not sure if any were essential, but if that's what the owner wanted then so be it. 😎👍
Cheers!!!
I wouldnt say essential given the quality to begin with, however first time i used them callaham saddles and the intonation was great and they were so easy to work with, every thread was so small and accurate on them. Thanks for watching
that sounds awesome
Its a great guitar honestly
Sound amazing hest playing
I tried to do it justice hahaa Still the best tele ive ever played this one. At any price point. Absolutely my perfect tele especially after the small mods
That's a lovely guitar
Hi man, Seen your vids on insta - the hours are paying off dude!
@@Paul-D slow progress!
Strat tones in the neck position. Not as low output/beefy a tone as you'd expect from a traditional Tele.
Bridge lives up to the Tele tone.
2nd position is pretty unique. Brighter than expected but damn does it ever have some bite.
Pretty sure this is my next purchase.
Have been debating between the new gold foil Tele and this. This wins.
I just bought an Isbell the other day after lusting after a gold foil (I love mini hums and ebony fret boards) and playing a lot of Telecasters at a variety of price points at my local guitar shop. The thing not obvious in any review I’ve seen of the gold foil sounds great but it weighs a ton! Even more than my Les Paul (and I was looking for a tele for less weight!) Love the neck and pickups on the Isbell.
Lovely axe mate! Love the Finish. Do you keep all these guitars? ;)
This one was a customer/friends guitar (sadly) haha
Really nice mod to the Isbell. Love the 5 hole mint green pickguard. if you don't mind me asking, where did you get it from?
I think it looks much better then the black haha. Company called Northwest guitars
@@Paul-D cheers fella. I'll have a look. Yep the black doesn't work so well.
Oof, that John Mayer Trio riff on a TELE? I’m sold. I live on the neck position on my strats, anyway!
Thats the cool thing with this guitar the neck is very close to stratty. Not exactly but very close.
But the other positions are also really cool and your likely to use them. I rarely come off the neck on a strat too haha
@@Paul-D Still happy with your purchase a year on? I'm about to snag one and I thought your perspective would be great to have
I actually refilmed this guitar a few weeks ago if you want to see how it is a year on. Belongs to my friend
Came for the content and guitar, awesome 🔥 but what song was that riff from at 9.15???
Thanks dude. I was just trying to do a scar tissue ‘esk type sound without playing the actual riff haha.
It's swampy and perfect....I can almost smell the gators.
What song is that riff at 8:43 from? I know I've heard that song a bunch of times, and have some of the lyrics in my head, but can't quite place the song.
Its called i dont need no doctor 🤘🤘
@@Paul-D ah..yep. Thanks.
Is that really a mint pickguard? Looks pretty plain white but regardless it's lovely!
My camera always struggles with it does same on my strat thats mint too lol
I really like the pickups on this model (especially the neck which gives you those Strat sounding bell like harmonics)
Yup for sure
Been trying to find out what Allen key size is the truss rod for the isbell thanks
Fairly sure its 3/16th
Thankyou
Are you the bass player for the Manchester band Driveshaft , ," You all everybody".
No im not haha, are you Jack Black from the movies
out of interest how far off intonation were the standard saddles? - I think the pickups are based around twisted tele..?
Not far out at all tbf. Nothing wrong but the calaham ones are lovely to fit and work with to dial it right in. Im not sure what the pickups are based around tbf. If you watch the later vintera tele with bigsby they sounded veryyyyy similar. So im assuming they are the vintera pups with a different name honestly.
The pickups were designed by Tim Shaw to replicate the ones on Jason’s original.
Would this kind of finish naturally "relic" with play or does this kind of finish basically stay as is?
This one would wear with time its not a thick poly finish. None of the nitro finishes fender use today are the same as the 50s and 60s though
@@Paul-D Thanks. I appreciate the response. I think it looks great and sounds great too.
Fender started using a poly undercoat in the 60’s.
what amp are you playing out of?
Its always a mix between either the boss katana into my jcm900 cab or the neural dsp software.
The Isbell neck is very good, but i can't get past the plastic trust rod ajuster at the top of the neck. Stratosphere Guitars had an American Jimmy Page Mirror Guitar Neck in dark Rosewood 7.25 with tuners for $799.00 fit perfectly. Looks like the custom shop Guitar that Jason Isbell really plays. Check out old video of his concerts and you see the real guitar with no plastic ajuster at the headstock.
Funny, that’s one of the things that drove me to this one. I don’t want to take the neck off to adjust the truss rod.
Sounds and looks lovely, the new pick guard is much nicer
The nicest fender tele i ever played by a long way. Wonder what will top it!?
@@Paul-D you seem to be craving another Tele 😂🙂
@@EdCoombesDogs im always craving something 🤣
Have you tried the Chrissie Hynde?
Skunk stripe?!
Good point haha, Ive known of a very small handful of Pre CBS Tele Customs WITH a skunk stripe even though for the most part with the RW fingerboards they were gone. Maybe Jasons original was one of the few with the skunk stripe??
Only upgrade is the saddles as far as I can see. The black plate looks better to me. Looks like a Classic Vibe now. Multi ply 5 screw guards shouldn't even be a thing. Otherwise enjoyable watch. Good note on the US/ Mexico made situation.
It was what the owner wanted to do, the other screw was added after the video, again as the owner wanted. But in all fairness I don't personally think this guitar wants for any upgrades asides from a good set up. I really like those saddles, but the stock ones are just fine.
I got this in and the fretboard was horrible. Some frets were even loose, it had horrible fretbuzz! Also fretsprout, basically unplayable. I couldnt believe this is how fender ships out a guitar... so i send it back and hope the replacement is gonna be better. Anyone else experienced this with this guitar? I understand the relicing but surely the frets shouldnt be loose in the slot...
Wow no way, How did that get past all the QC! Good on you for sending it back - ive since played 2 more Jason Isbell teles in shops and both were as good as this one, lovely dark rosewood etc
@@Paul-D just got a replacement, this one is absolutely miles better! still a very dry fretboard but way less fretsprout, no fretbuzz at all, so definitely keeping this one! cheers mate
Thing abt fender is whether its mim or california its still built by mexicans. Mexico is v much a part of fenders history and electic guitars for that matter as well. Its been like that from day 1. This is like a mim custom shop tele and i see this as a cut above the road worn series.
Agree totally
The best MIM 60’s Telecaster ever made is the now unfortunately discontinued Fender 60’s Baja, custom shop design, american vintage 52 & 58 pickups, four way pickup selector with S-1 switch. $ 800 - 1000 price range. Difficult to beat
Yeh I own one haha. I would call that a close second best ever made :)
Mexican custom canada 23 hundred plus 13 percent i will get one when i rob the bank
madness how expensive everything seems to be getting wherever you live
Why buy and then change it .
May as well have got a 60s custom in the first place !
Because its his guitar and he can do whatever he wants to it 🤷♂️
Not averse to doing mods, myself, but doesn't really need it on this guitar. Nice looker as is.
Just my opinion.😎
5% difference can you really hear that?? Hahaha
Its more expression that mathmatical % difference haha. But you can feel even the smallest thing on a guitar.... its what value do those small things have to the individual thats all that counts.
