    This song came out 35+ years ago when I was still a kid. When I first heard it on MTV, I thought it was a stupid song, singing about smoke and fire. Now that I'm in my mid 40's with 3 kids, I learn the meaning of that fire, I just wanted to say it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thanks Roger Daltrey.

      It's a Pete Townsend song and he does a better live version of the song ruclips.net/video/I09C-owWw5s/видео.html This version is over-produced and sounds very dated in the mid- 80s Just my own opinion;) It's still a great song.

      Shmuel Yosef i can say in general things were better than today but I was only 15 at the time. Most are nostalgic for their younger years. when this song was released in 1985 people were nostalgic for the 50s and 60s as the 80s were deemed the decade of greed. It’s possible that in 35 years people will be missing this time, probably not this year in particular though

    "Love is a fire that burns unseen, a wound that aches yet isn't felt, an always discontent contentment, a pain that rages without hurting, a longing for nothing but to long, a loneliness in the midst of people, a never feeling pleased when pleased, a passion that gains when lost in thought. It's being enslaved of your own free will; it's counting your defeat a victory; it's staying loyal to your killer. But if it's so self-contradictory, how can Love, when Love chooses, bring human hearts into sympathy?"

    I remember seeing an interview with Roger on MTV when this album came out and a few things he said about this album stuck with me.
    1. Pete Townshend wrote this song and knew that only Roger could do it justice. So he took a copy of a demo recording, tracked down Roger to a pub in London, walked in and handed it to him saying,”Heres a song for you.” and immediately walked out. Pete was a recovering alcoholic . The members of The Who were notorius for not getting along with each other.

    Townshend is an incredibly talented songwriter about more than 50 years, but only the voice of Roger Daltrey brings the songs to its destination

    The Who has been around since I was born, and I pretty much can't go a day without hearing at least one Who, Townshend or Daltrey tune. It's as natural to me as breathing. Their music is literally part of my life. Roger and Pete are funny and cool, and they're nice to their fans. My sister saw them in VA Beach last summer whilst I was in hospital-- thanks a lot. sis!

      MetallicBill So you're only a year older than me! I was born September '67.Oh,FYI? I'm just two hours south of Woodstock. How's that for crazy?

      MetallicBill I am the middle child. My brother is 14 months older; my sister is 4 years younger. Most of the stuff I listen to I got into on my own, like the Who. My brother got me into Zep. My taste in music is so eclectic, you could never figure out my personality by my record collection.(God, I MISS vinyl!) The crap they have out nowadays is NOT music- it's garbage! the 80's was the last great decade for music. All the really great music came out between the 60's and the 80's. We haven't had anything decent since. If it isn't that gangsta trash, it's the interchangeable toy boy bands that all sound the same. They really should take MTV and VH-1 off the air; they certainly don't play music videos on those channels anymore. When you and I were teens, MTV totally rocked! Now it's nothing! I have Sirius and frequently listen to the 80's on 8 with the original VJ's.

      MetallicBill My adopted brother is a priest. Our whole family is very tight. Ironically, both my brother-in-law and sister-in-law came from very dysfunctional families. Maybe that's why they were attracted to our family;we're very close to one another. Actually, I have two adopted brothers and one bio brother. My adopted brothers are both priests. One is in Kenya; the other is the pastor of my parish, which for me is awesome. We get together frequently for lunch and to debate theology. He enjoys our debates; he says it often gives him inspiration for his homilies. He does not write his homilies down; he ad libs them all the way.
      That is a Pretty crummy way for Pete to grow up, but unlike so many of the wussy brats today, he took his difficult life and made himself into a living legend. Today's little dirtbags go shoot up schools to get revenge. They are so stupid. The best revenge is to make something out of yourself and have a terrific life. Then you're the one having the last laugh.

      MetallicBill Oh yeah, my parents were pretty strict with us, too. I had an 830pm curfew until I was a senior in high school. Interesting what our separate lives wound up happening in common. And I grew up all over cuz my dad was military. You grew up in the Great White North of the US! At least one of us has a normal accent because it sure isn't me!

    • @ecclestonsangel
      @ecclestonsangel 9 лет назад

      MetallicBill OMG,that's kinda funny! Ihe only one in our family who got away with rebelling in our family was my sister, because she was the baby of the family. Basically, she got away with murder because she was the baby and Mom and Dad doted on her. I was the goody-goody. I didn't dare do anything, because I was convinced the first time I tried to do something "bad" my parents would somehow find out and I'd be busted. The one time I did something questionable, my mom nailed me for it. She was a school bus driver at the school we all went to. Living in my house at the time was the equivalent of living in a Soviet gulag!

    i was always told growing up after this song came out the song wasn't written for Roger. Pete wrote this at Live Aid when somebody told him that AIDS was like a fire and the concert was going to sort of "Put out the fire". But there is still going to be an effect "After the Fire". He explains it quite well on the Deep End Live! Album...

    This song never fails to put me in a melancholy mood. The lyrics are painful to listen to, but it's a beautiful arrangement/performance by a stellar ensemble: 3/4s of Big Country, the great Robbie McIntosh from the Pretenders on guitar, etc.. Mark Brzezicki is always recognizable. Daltrey's earnest performance and the somewhat singular video also helped this one stick out.

    I got a soundboard bootleg of Pete singing this one . He said they werent ready for it to be played at live aid, they hadnt had enough time to get the song ready, they had some rough takes and a good few practice sessions, but they knew it wouldnt be good enough for thier live standard.... You know how those guys are when they take the stage, only the best...

      Mainstream radio play has been bought out by big records labels. So smaller record labels don't have same marketing power. There are a lot indie bands that still experiment with this sound and do homage 80s music.
