Absolutely fantastic. I have dipped in and out of your videos over the years - but when you held your board up and let your most honest words fly - I really felt I met the core of you. You're a good guy Ralfy, thanks for your videos. (Point 4, roughly 25mins in for anybody that might actually read this). All the best! (oh, by the way, also watched clives video for years, seperately, and never knew the connection till recently - funny old world!)

In the old days... (and my old days were the 1990s. If you wait long enough these will be the old days, when ralfy had his YT channel...) there was a strong contingent of people who insisted that whisky was for drinking, not collecting. Always loved that sentiment; but I still occasionally put a bottle away. Some became "valuable collectibles" but for legal reasons it's hard to sell a whisky in the USA. Not impossible, of course, but not easy. I sold a few and then I wished I still had them. Cask strength sherry aged Glenlivet from the '70s, or the old Springbank 12yo 100 proof. But most of what I put away wasn't "investments" it was 'deferred drinking.' I had had the bottle, I knew it was good, how could I not hope to taste that Dallas Dhu again some day? Well, eventually I did! :-) The sad fact about the most "collectible" whiskies is that they will never be enjoyed by anyone - just traded, prized, adored and traded on... If you love it, drink it. Drink it now, or drink it 20 years from now...

That macallan 18 sells for a lot more than £200. More like £800 or more. I wish they were selling for £200 a year ago....I would have purchased 10 of them at auction....old fashioned Macallan....those are very high quality drams. Rich, funky, bold. Special. Long gone.

A couple more reasons for buying whisky for "bunkering" (storing away in your whisky bunker):
#1. After tasting a limited or special release expression that you discover you really like.
Which ones? Compass Box limited editions, Glenmorangie yearly private editions, a single numbered barrel bottling, or any other distilleries experimental releases come to mind. When these are gone, they are gone, so buy a second bottle for drinking at a later date or year, perhaps with a special group of fellow whisky aficionados.
#2. If you plan on moving to a whisky desert (I kid you not).
I am currently lucky enough to live in the same town as what arguably the best whisky store in New England. That said, I will be retiring (in a decade?) to an area of Arizona that is a desert in more ways than one. Spirit sales in Tucson are mostly by the two largest national chains, which stock the stop skus, but not what I can get here.
Lastly, an odd note about older bottlings of Macallan. You will find 15yo or 18yo bottlings from the 1970s of Macallan to command to command two to three times the current price. Whisky does not age in the bottle, so why? The answer is that the quality of the spirit going in the bottle was better back then according to Macallan fans. They supposedly rejected more casks back then as sub-par. My opinion? I need to sample more evidence before I can comment.
    Cheers!

dear Ralfy, thx again for the nice view on the matter. It seems to me it would be good idea to develop further story & science about aging of whisky in general once a bottle was bottled and now in your storage, f.e. Yes, it could be stored forever, indeed, but with a time, it will develop further and open more internally over time. Science behind could open such further research by the master like you to the public audience. It reminds me to pipe tobaccos, check those who has been discussing such aging over time. Both products are nature and originally each time are different due to internal integrity.

Ralfy, I wonder how many bottles do you have open at one given time? I'm asking because I have a small collection around 25 bottles but, I do only buy whiskies that I'm drinking, therefore, I usually open them as soon as I buy them. I'm worried about having 25 open bottles because I'm concerned about the loss in quality due to the amount of air that are in those bottles. How long does it take for a half bottle, or less, of whisky to lose quality in your opinion?

@ralfy: I would be grateful for a ralfy review on buying whiskies from independent bottlers. These are often very expensive, small-batches, difficult to judge before buying and reviews are often not available (let alone reliable reviews!)
Where I live, a large selection of independent bottlers is available -- Gordon Macphail, RD Rattray, Signatory Vintage (cask strength collection, unchilfiltered collection etc), Cadenhead's etc. But I've never bought them because I have a limited budget, and want to spend it wisely.
It would be helpful to get some tips on what to look out for while buying these expensive, eclectic whiskies. Thanks a ton!

Whisky corks weren't designed for long term storage, but there's not a lot you can do about that. When you open a bottle you've had for 20 years, expect the cork to crumble.
Bottles breathe a little. Get a grease pencil or stabillo (water colour) pencil and mark the fill level on the neck of the bottle. Over the years it will recede a bit, a quarter inch, maybe a half inch. It's time to open it and drink it, while the whisky is still fresh and retains its character. When the fill level is getting into the shoulder the whisky is seriously in decline...

I realize those affect the product and are of prime importance, but this would seem important for many/most current and future buyers also. Or do you have reason perhaps to know that it will never be taken up by distilleries and bottlers?

I LOVE Henry McKenna! We get that for $22 at Total Wine in California. The best value in bourbon hands down, IMO. Tastes better than some bourbons double or triple the price.

    Ralfy,
Can you identify a whisky for me please? My father-in-law's dad bought this blended Scotch in 1899. How do I post pictures of the bottle? Looks like a dictionary.

These are all €500+. Not sure how these are regular prices. I'm sure they're fantastic, (save maybe the Lagavulin, which I've read middling things about) but none of these are collectible or even drinkable anymore for the average person.

*mgtow* (pronounced like _"migtow"_) meaning "men going their own way". That is basically individualists who see through society's gynocentrism and male use- and disposability and consciously decide to rid their life decisions of unconscious gynocentric conditioning. In particular, it means having the conscious option of better things to do in life than being the work horse for arranging life around some woman's narcissistic drama of what it means to be a woman. As a rule: no marriage, no cohabitation etc., exceptions notwithstanding.
*Soteriologe* (german for "Soteriologist" which had been taken already). So just call me "Soteriologist".

Hi Ralf, a fair few months ago I asked for your opinion on whisky as I embarked on my journey and you kindly recommended an Old Pulteny 12yo. Well, after purchasing and tasting a lot more bottles it's safe to say that I enjoy whisky. But something that is strange to me is this concept of 'breathing', and no I'm not choking...thankfully, but this idea of letting the whisky breathe. I have tried this idea a little with an Appleton Estate 12yo extra rum, which I think has worked as all the flavour and intensity is still there but it's lost its slightly unpalatable harshness. Is it the same for whisky? Can you help/explain?
