    Seeing Springbank 10 in this lineup is a true blast from the past. I’m so glad I managed to buy a bottle a year ago and I keep enjoying it ever since 💯🖤 It really gives the words about buying the whisky now and don’t wait on it some substance 😅

    Fun fact about the distilleries in Canada. Last week the provincial government of Ontario introduced a 61.5% sales tax on spirits sold in stores owned and operated by Ontario distilleries. This is an incredible burden to small craft distilleries who often have to rely on their own storefront as their only sales outlet. This tax shows that the provincial government has chosen to ignore the successful design of its own wine and beer tax policy as well as the successful spirit tax policy seen in British Colombia. In B.C. alcohol is taxed by the litre and provides a lower tax rate to small producers which only increases with greater production. These polices have created a renaissance in Canadian craft alcohol production generating hundreds of jobs but this new ridiculously high tax is going to do the complete opposite.
    This flat tax on the retail price of liquor is nothing but punishment for those producers and distillers who push to create premium spirits and higher production costs. This tax is unreasonable and incredibly excessive especially when compared to how Ontario wineries and small breweries are taxed. For example, Ontario wine has a basic tax 6.1% compared to this 61.5% on distilleries. Even if we are to tax by alcohol by volume that’s still a tax rate of over 10 times even though the ABV of a whisky is only roughly 4 times greater than wine.
    Graduated taxation is an indispensable tool for small producers who lack the economies of scale and depend on the revenue from their own storefronts for their first few years. Ontario’s craft breweries who make less than 5,000,000 litres of beer per year pay less than half the tax per litre than the major breweries. Craft distilleries in B.C. pay no provincial tax on their first 50,000 litres sold and only increasing the tax after that. These policies encourage growth in their markets and support small businesses but this tax does the exact opposite.
    Ontario’s distillers are already facing an uphill battle. Although the LCBO announced that they would begin to allow distillers to deliver their spirits to LCBO stores for retail, they are still applying its full 140% markup on the product despite the fact the distillers foot the costs for distribution. This is one of the highest margins for any product that the LCBO sells. On top of it all, if the distillers forgo the LCBO and open their own storefront, the contract the distilleries must sign with the LCBO to be allowed to operate a shop specifically forbids the distillery to sell to licensees, making them unable to sell to bars and restaurants. As far as I know, there is no such rule for Ontario breweries and wineries.
    The government here has down nothing but rig the game so that only the big distilleries can operate here. Amusingly enough, the small upstart distillers here are likely going to focus on exporting their products and forgo the Canadian market altogether. So if you get a chance and see some of our Canadian spirits in your stores, buy em and tell us how it is!

    • @thewhiskybothy
      @thewhiskybothy  7 лет назад +7

      . . . your right, the game is rigged ! excessively so, it's simply incompetent government. This is why I will not condemn the new generation of home-distillers who can make such high standard liquors. There will be a specific reason for the excessive taxes, the answer to the reason will be historical vested control and manipulation, simple as that. It's all in the history books.

    Funny that you should mention Lot.40 here in Canada Ralphy, I have purchased a couple of bottles of this over the last couple of years and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I can't honestly say that I found it a whole lot better than Canadian Club Chairman's Reserve 100% Rye which is quite a bit cheaper, maybe like 30% cheaper(a real bargain for what you get).
    But then again, I only have a few years of whisky experience so my tastes aren't refined like many of you malt heads out there, especially you sir Ralphy!
    Thank you for giving us Canadians a little bit of attention and advice! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of my malt mates out there!

    Hi Ralfy, I've just finished a bottle of Aberlour 10 year old, which I really enjoyed. I'm new to Single malts and this was the first one I bought. I've also got a crystal glass decanter, which I stored it in. Could you recommend the best way to use this? I.e. Is it best to use it only when I want a few glasses, or pour the full bottle in the decanter? Cheers

    I know this is an old video and you get a lot of comments but I really hope you can clarify what you meant by your statement at about 14.58 that you wouldn't normally touch Speyside single malt. Isn't Aberlour Speyside for a start?And then Glenfarclas, Balvenie etc. There are loads of examples of great whiskies from the region.

    Hey Ralfy great review - I'm really glad you mentioned lot 40. That is definitely one of the more interesting Canadian whiskies to come out (again) lately. Sadly the laws on production and difficulty in getting to market make it only the opportunity of the very wealthy to open distilleries in much of the country. I'm hoping a conservative provincial government in my home province changes things.
    all the best,
    Mark

    The other way around... I'm from Holland, and when the pound dropped I ordered some goodies from Master of Malt because it was cheaper than the cheapest online shops here.
    One interesting bit about Holland is that it's not allowed to sell hard liquor in supermarkets. So there is not as much of the loss leader bargain thing going on.

    Great to see you mention Tasmanian whisky ralfy! I live in Hobart, and have sampled quiet a few. Great stuff, but average between $150 - $200 a bottle. So on the higher side. If you get the chance to try hellyers road, would be great to get your thoughts. I feel it's the most reasonably priced Tasmanian whisky at about $100 a bottle

    Hi Ralfy, comment from a French PeatHead because it's also "pre-Christmas offers" in France. For example : Aberlour 10yo for 18,50€ and 12yo for 20,50€, Highland Park 12yo for 22€. Today I've collected in my basket the Aberlour 18yo for 38€ (45€-7€ ) and several Laphroaig 10yo at 24€. Talisker 10yo is dramatically missing, nowadays it's all NAS (skye, storm, dark storm)... Tormore 14yo for 33€ but I've no idea about this one...

  • @andrew_ep_curtis
    @andrew_ep_curtis 7 лет назад

    As I've said on one of your other recent videos.... I keep going back to the Aberlour 10yo. The Tesco opposite me constantly has it at £20 and I cannot say no. They had an Aberfeldy 12yo for £22 too.
    I prefer to go to a whisky/gin shop about 30 mins drive away, for the greater selection and the customer service. Its a converted garage attached to the owners house in a residential area. A lovely elderly couple own and run it, but sometimes I can't ignore a bargain right next door.

  • @ironbooze2937

    May wanna look out for the Aberlour 12 NCF. No supermarket stuff, but online retailers tend to price it pretty near the standard 12, but this one's at 48% and, of course, NCF (just bought one for 31€)

    Actually Ralfy, you might be amazed at the range, quality and price of single malts from all over the world we get out here in Taiwan. Within a 2 mile radius from my home there are at least a dozen specialist shops all with their own niche for particular independent bottlers or small distilleries. This weekend my malt mates and I picked up a stash of Laphroaig quarter casks for just over 20 pounds each at my local favorite whisky shop. Allan Logan from Bruichladdich apparently dropped in there last week as part of their Laddie Ten release but sadly I just missed the chance to meet him.

    • @martymcflytw
      @martymcflytw 7 лет назад

      We should add that while imported whisky is very affordable here in Taiwan, however Kavalan (which as we know is produced here) is quite overpriced in comparison. Not to mention that their official shops offer tasting samples in small plastic cups.

    Ralfy, as a Tasmanian, it is great to hear you refer to our whiskies. Nant and Overeem are two fairly recent Tasmanian distilleries that are producing some fantastic whiskies, particularly Nant. Also glad that you shared your sympathies at the outrageous cost of alcohol (particularly spirits) in Australia. I bought a bottle of Aberlour 12 from the discount bottle shop recently for $72! Laphroaig 10 is $100! Keep up the wonderful reviews! (Any Tasmanian reviews in the offing?) :)

    So jealous! I live in Finland and not only that the prices are just outrageously high but the only retail shop that can sell alcoholic beverages above 4,8% ABV is a chain called ALKO that's owned by the state. They have monopoly over everything and they're jacking up the prices as much as they want (Aberlour 10 is 46 € btw).
    Discounted whiskyes??? I've never seen one! All shops have no more than 40 single malts on their shelves, except the flagship store which has about 130 but it's about 160 km away from where I live. So you can imagine I'm stocking up on every trip I make abroad.

    Funny you should pick out the Aberlour 10 first, I bought one a few weeks back at Asda for £20, reduced from ~£30. I checked Ralfy's review as I remember he gave it a good review, along with one or two others, and fancied trying it anyway; and I purchased it. I haven't opened it as yet, but I now have the A'bunadh also and am looking forward to comparing both.
    Sainsburys were doing discounts on Benromach's a few months back, I hope they drop them down again for Xmas, as I really want to try them also. HP12 and Old Pulteney 12 are back on special again at Tesco's as well for anyone interested.

      Try adding a few drops of the A'bunadh to the 10! :) Both good whiskies imo but the 10 at £20 is a bargain. I stocked up earlier in the year ;) Can't remember the batch no. for the A'b I had but it needed quite a bit of water and became 'flat' quite quickly, if that's the right word? Lovely, rich drop though!

    Second comment in the same day (ha!), for a chance of destiny we got to try Lady of The Glen 20 yo at a whisky club tasting some months ago and it was as well received as at your tasting. Funnily enough, the same adjectives you use for this Lady20 I would use for the Glenmorangie 18.
    Big Brand vs Indie, similar style, in my opinion not much difference in quality. May actually get to try them side by side (still have a little bit left of the Lady20 to re-calibrate and reframe the palate.

    here in ireland i but most of my spitis online from all over europe ( italy denmark france spain portugal uk) as the price here is usually20/30% higher and when you buy 6 bottles at a time you can end up saving the price of one of the bottles even with shipping included and as much as id like to support my local 1 shop off licence they are paying full price on their stock and they are the most expensive due to very low sales numbers and just cant compete with the 7 (thats right 7) full size supermarkets that are on the 1.5 mile road through the village or with online sales

    Ralfy, a wonderful and informative review and very entertaining as always. I just pulled up the Isle of Man on Google Earth and was quite surprised to see how small it is! I was wondering where about on the island do you live and where you get most of your spirits? Also, maybe it was a reflection, but it seemed on the last few reviews that your tasting glass had an image engraved on it. I for one would love to have a pair with you engraved on it with "Malt-Mate" too.
    Good health and prosperity to you and all of our fellow Male-Mates out there!

    Its no problem order on the internet from EU in Sweden, I dont do it myself, but know a lot of people who does, and no one stops it. But in Norway my birthcountry its not possible!! Most because Norway is stricter and not member of EU. But Swedens Govermentdriven Systembolaget has very good selection and offers. As Sweden is regarded a Whisky Country, it has some single malt for good prices that in fact isnt so expencive and is exclusively only for Sweden... I can mention Bunnahabhain Moine, Highland Park Cask Strenght, Highland Park Singe cask cs 12 and 14. Bowmore Laimrig 15 cs, Laphroaig 12. Norway on the other hand is a Cognac country. Where you can get some really old cognacs from Bache Gabrielsen, Braastad, Prunier and A.E. Dor for some really good prices. Under the prohibition in Norway Bache Gabrielsen sold a VS cognac called +++ as in three red crosses for prescriptions on the Pharmacy....

Bought a bottle of the regular 2 years go for $89. It's got to be a closeout. Each bottle is numbered. There are only around 300 bottles of each at only $28(with shipping)! Blackadder is my holy grail. It's a great dram. Regular is 46% and cask is 60%. Hope this helps.
