I like the concept of letting the whiskey breathe one minute for each year of its age.
Ralfy, you sir, are the David Attenborough of whisky tasting
Thank you for taking me on this journey with you & keep up the good work.
My son got me this for Christmas a couple years ago. I haven't opened it yet, but after watching your excitement over it during this video, Ralfy, I truly look forward to it. Thanks!
. . . good luck !
Hello Ralfy, just preparing my Glenfiddich christmas list and came upon your channel. I made the effort to sign into the RUclips channel to say that you are a FANTASTIC storyteller and on Christmas day I am going to repeat this video with a nice tumbler of my favourite dram, maybe even the 19 year old Madeira. Truly wishing you the best of health and happiness and thanking you for spending the time to educate and entertain us with your review. Glenn.
Hello from one of the Malty Mountain Men from the Blue Ridge of Virginia! The Madeira education is most appreciated, and most timely, as I sip Whistle Pig's 12-year old rye--lovely stuff (which I bought meself and don't work for, to be clear). It's said to be finished in an assortment of Port, Sauternes, and Madeira casks. Thanks for all your diligent work!
"A year in the glass for every year in the bottle"
Still waiting
Here's the thing: if you want to be a good whiskey taster, you need to have a good background in food in general, especially the plants, all the myriad of flavours and the art and science of culinary tradition from home and abroad. It's a formidable study! It sounds like you have that background, Ralfy. Keep studying and sharing your passion, responsibly, of course. GD
. . . agreed !
See? Ralfy is not biased against popular, mass produced brands.
If the content is good -- he will praise it, even if its from a brand that is usually shitty, mass-produced and overrated. If the content is bad -- he will say its bad, even if its a very old whisky, which is supposed to be revered for being so old (like he did in one of his other recent reviews). Way to go Ralfy man! CONTENT matters more than any delusional perception, steered one way or another! And that is the way it should be.. with EVERYTHING!
Haha, good timing. I just came back from Madeora yesterday.
Wine is awesome, but the thing to look for on Madeira is also local rum. There are a few small producers. I brought a delightful, 58%, ex-wine single cask 9yo local rum home. Will keep me warm for the rest of Polish winter ;)
also, at first they did not add brandy to wine. They added rum. Only since XIX century they add brandy from Spain
. . . very interesting information, thanks.
Aquardente? tried the poncha's? :-)
Watching the first review, Ralfy, Bravo! You have earned another subscriber. Exceptional review!
Ralfy, it's great to hear you talking about a wine produced in my country :) Maybe one day we'll see you trying some aguardente as well? heheh
Great review Ralfy, I picked up a selection of all three from Duty free for around £89.99 but they were only 20cl bottles.
Wow ralfy ! 620 amazing and well detailed reviews! Thank you so much for your knowledge and passion for the world of whisky! I know you have taught myself and so many others about this beautiful drink along with it's culture!
Ralfy I don't think turning it slowly makes any difference to a quick flick around the glass. Usually I pour myself a drink then give it a quick twirl around the glass then I put a lid on the glass and give it 5 to 10 min and give it another smell to see if it's ready or not. I repeat this process usually a few times before I have a drink so why have I been categorised as someone who rushes his drink simply because I give it a quick twirl instead of a slow turn around the glass. I know the kind of drinker you're talking about but I am not one of them and I believe that is miss-informative to assume so.
He means don't try to blend it like you're a food processor, not that only 5 rpm is acceptable.
Ralfy, you said the Red Wine cask finish and Bourbon cask finish were interesting in their own right but would you give them a similar mark to the Madeira cask finish? I found the red wine version to fade quickly but I really like the bourbon cask finish!
. . . check out reviews at whiskybase !
Madeira is a Portuguese island since 1418.
Love the video. Just a quick question about a different whiskey altogether? Just wondering if Jamesons Irish whiskey is casked in a sherry cask? Would I be right?
. . . mainly ex-bourbon casks.
@@thewhiskybothy thanks for that.
Yep , never tasted Madeira , glad you went into detail with that!
IT is like listing your art teacher talking about contemporary art but do much more fun
You are a legend and your reviews are so top grade , THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WORK !!! I am a brit , if your ever coming to Nova Scotia area give me a shout ! , we can have a cup of tea of something stronger :) thanks again man
According to the whiskyexchange.com it has added colour, does this strictly refer to E150a?
Thanks for mentioning whether or not if they're cold-filtered and colored - it helps with my boycott and saves me looking it up on German whisky websites.
Hello Ralfy, Thanks again for another interesting review. Question, have you ever thought about comparing this with a standard Glenfiddich 18 with one single drop of Madeira wine in it, or maybe a double dram with one drop to generate a half drop?
Ralfy.... imagine if this was cask strength and no colouring? Also is this a Madeira finish or has it been fully matured in Madeira casks for 19 years? ....cheers.
The passion of whiskey: you certainly have it, Ralfy. GD
Has a portuguese I found this really interesting. BTW love your reviews Ralfy!
Ralfy. Great video. I was expecting a list of flavour notes you recognised from tasting the Madeira which you picked in the Glenfiddich AOD 19YO. If it's not too much trouble, could you list them here in the comments section please?
. . . prune, fig, mixed spice, nutmeg, raisin, mincemeat, breakfast tea.
Thanks Ralfy. You are the best!
Hey Ralfy -- I remember a review in which you were talking about how you liked Bunnahabhain and how it got you into regularly enjoying scotch. I recently found a special release Bunnahabhain 13 year old (an odd age statement) but have yet to open to bottle. Am wondering if you have come across this in your travels too or maybe it is exclusive to the US?
. . . never seen this one ! good luck.
rockindrop I believe the 13 year Bunna is a Marsala finish. Haven't heard too much about it but what I have has been good.
rockindrop a great 13 year old well worth the price is Craigellachie! check it out.
Two thumbs down already ?! Maybe you should throw your whisky all over the floor then Richard Patterson might stop clicking that dislike button...
very educational ralfy enjoyed this video alot, and very interested in buying this glenfiddick or a springbank now in a madera style .
163rd thanks for another great malt moment.
On listening I'm finding over the last number of vlogs your voice level lower.
I wonder if this is something others have noticed or am I in need of a new iPad ?
I got my first bottle of Scotch whiskey that I held onto and I did not want to open. However, I did not want to go the rest of my life not knowing what it tastes like. So alas, I opened said bottle and I was very happy. It was a very standard run-of-the-mill brand a blended Scotch even. Chivas Regal extra. I don't know why I didn't want to open the bottle it wasn't that expensive but I had never seen it before. I am returning to said liquor store and I am asking them if they have another bottle because it was the only one on the Shelf and I want one to put in the cabinet for when I retire. I only tell you this because I do not believe I would have wanted to open that bottle
Thank you for the education. Cheers!
Ralfy Madeira is not a Portuguese colony, it´s an Island of portugal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeira, just like the Azores
Madeira at some point has thought in about going for independence. But yeah its a archipelago as azores, both belong to Portugal. São Tomé and Principe gone independent.
Thanks for another great review Malty Master.
. . . your welcome.
Hey ralfy, new to the channel and was just wondering what your highest score is and what it was?
. . . 95/100 in the early days for a Mortlach 19yo
Glad i have one left😋 wanna compare all three version together someday later
I'd quite like to discover more of the Fiddich range but with the majority sitting at 40% I've put my hard earned mainly elsewhere for now. Sláinte Ralfy 😃
Maltman Mike & Friend's Whisky & Spirit Reviews I'm
Maltman Mike & Friend's Whisky & Spirit Reviews
I'm with you. I usually avoid anything less than 43
The cheaper ones I've had are good for a beginner whisky drinker and are quite approachable and dependable. Much like Glenlivet. Nothing wrong with that, but if you've got a few years on your palate, you'd find them a bit boring.
Maltman Mike & Friend's Whisky & Spirit Reviews I vote with my dollar. Whenever I'm met with two options, it's the uncolored and unchill-filtered that wins
They most stay at 40 line due to european taxes etc. This is why stuff as monkey shoulder and bufallo traced are at 40 and not 43-45 in europe. Glenfiddich kinda wants give the same for all (similar quality and price), while other brands as the famous grouse keeps the high proof on certain countries while others are watered.
like glenfiddich 18 and 15 solera. ralfy likes your video. I see you from canary island spain. one question i have a oportunity to buy one bottle of auchentoshan 21 the old version, or balblair 1989 3 er release. if you choose a bottle of this,
What are you like??
. . . I will be reviewing the 21yo Auchentoshan soon, it would be my choice. Good luck.
thanks view the reviews. i have suscribe to the canal. but the next week need make a decision beacause is posible buy another people. the price is balblair 1989 90 euros and auchentoshan 21 old version bottle 82 euros. thanks. and Congratulations on your page
The red wine cask finish 19 Y/O line is quite nice as well.
Great video Ralfy - as always! I really get a lot from your VLOGS. I've recently began collecting and just purchased a independent bottled Littlemill cask strength. A good purchase or not? it's going to be put away for 10yrs or so 👍
. . . check reviews at whiskybase !
I will Ralfy... Thanks Chief 👍
Great review! I'm working on my patience. Can't help but get ahead of myself in my reviews at times. Maybe a bit guilty of what you mentioned earlier in the video.
. . . just about pacing it out in our own special ways over a reasonable time period. Shorthand reviews are not that useful if they end up a marketing-speak flavour list !
I do agree. Cheers.
Hey Ralfy. Tanks for another great video. Are you planning on reviewing the 2nd Edition of the Laddie ten anytime soon?
. . . yes !
I scored a bottle of this for around £50 in 2015! I should've bought a couple more...
Not first! Curious about this one. Thank you Sir!
Mark
that made my day, thanks Ralfy
. . . your welcome !
thanks for your review, sir. Cheers!
Hi Ralfy, since you are reviewing whiskeys with an age statement from now on, you should try the Russel's Reserve whiskeys from Wild Turkey the next time you do a run of American spirits. I recently bought a bottle of the 6 year old rye.
Thanks Ralfy! Great video!!! I am dying for you to review Glenfiddich 14 years old bourbon casks finish. Perhaps you have it on your to do list already. I'd absolutely love to hear your thoughts on it. I find it to be excellend whiskey (IMHO)
such a high score for a chill filtered, caramel colored whisky at 40%? think what it could at 46% with a natural presentation.
. . . then it would be 93/100
Quality older madiera and oloroso sherry is something extraordinary.... flavours are very powerful in this wines and they are by far my favourite wines, sadly I have extremely limited availability of this stuff.
Sherry whisky is delicious but it's a waste of time and money compared to bottle of sherry on it's own.
Ralfy! Could you review this age-stated, unchill filtered, natural color whisky? The Bruichladdich 23yo Black Arts 4.1 1990.
It's my favourite dram so far. I usually spend 30-45mins with that magical dram.
Hong Fu Teo the quality to price ratio is important to Ralfy. Black Art is very gimmicky and high priced. he might not ever consider buying it.
i've been pickling guavas for years
Hey there Ralfy, a fan from Germany here! Love your reviews, just wanted to ask: Do you maybe have a review of the Laphroaig An Cuan Mor coming up? I gave a bottle of that to my brother-in-law for Christmas and we would like to hear an expert's opinion on that, we both like it a lot =)
. . . no review of this Laph: planned for now, sorry !
Ooh... a bit sad. Maybe some time in the future?
Thanks for the answer, keep enjoying those malts!
bought the bottle again, if you rate bottle more then 90+ I buy them blind. below 90 I buy a sample. I am doing this since "16 you have still an 100% track record
. . . happy to help with your malt-moments !
Ralfy: Planning any Irish Whiskey reviews this March/ St. Patrick's day? The varieties of Irish Whiskey has really multiplied exponentially just in the last year it seems.
. . . will have a think about it.
Great educational video! Thank you!
What's the justification for colouring a whisky in a black bottle?
. . . force of habit !
Been to Madeira stayed north of Funchal, near the, maritimo football ground, breathtaking place, though you need an head for heights.
Anyway thanks for the whisky review, though I have to say I am not the biggest fan of Glenfiddich.
,
Ralfy, will we ever be able to see you mark 95,96 or more?
. . . yes, someday !
The whisky had 19 years to interact with oxygen in the cask. What is 19 extra minutes difference going to make in the glass? And ripe figs is the overwhelming character of this whisky. There is no bitterness in this whatsoever, only sweetness of all the ripe fruits and Madeira finish.
Ralfy, in the name of consistency wouldn't you deduct a point on the malt mark for this being colored and chill-filtered?
. . . I did !
Okie. Too bad Glenfiddich couldn't restrain themselves from adding the color and chill-filtering this. It would be interesting to know what goes in to these choices, especially with regards to color seeing as the bottle is dark.
Ralfy, Madeira is not a portuguese colony, It is...Portugal, just not mainland ;)
I've never had pickled guava before. :-)
And 85/100 point for glenfarclas 25 year at 43% natural coloured and filtered but non chill . Not fair ralfy.
You're the master!!
The whisky industry should make greater use of madeira casks.
. . . agreed !
On another note, that great small r republican and anti-monachist Thomas Jefferson drank prodigious amounts of Madeira while writing the Declaration of Independence.
Portugal!
looks like church box with wine and body of christ. It even has the symbol inside xd
Ralfy, I don't think we've ever seen your eyes roll back in your head before. ;^)
Huge Madeira fan here, which reminds me: ruclips.net/video/OW_zi8n4HDQ/видео.html
I certainly enjoy your reviews a bit more when you throw in some drama and anger.
seventh!
First!
.
. . . Verified as First !
.
Glenfiddich needs to cease chill filtering & adding e150a Colorant to their proud expressions.

Was this review intended to "celebrate" Trump's inauguration?
. . . no, I don't see any connection !!!
ralfystuff Trump is angry with Glenfiddich so he would not appreciate your review - I thought the timing may have been intentional but it must have been subconscious
£120
. . . £105 online.
ralfystuff my friend was happy he got it duty free, now I know why.
ralfystuff and less that £100 on Stena's Harwich/Hook of Holland ferries. Thanks to this review I will be picking up a bottle on my way home in March.
95 euro over here in Belgium
Not available in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, any other Canadians out there seen it?
PATHETIC YES. OMG. People these days. smh
Hong Fu Teo what?
