For a gameboy game this is pretty impressive. The animation, the amount of game available and just the whole trick it does with the classic arcade game. It seems like its had more effort put in than super mario land 2 (i know mario land 2 came out before this, but what is essentially just a reboot of a non-mario game its quite amazing.) This is also what I want Mario vs DK to return to. A puzzle platformer. The minis were nice at first but then pulled a rabbids move and centralised it too much to the point it took over the entire core gameplay and changed it.
The first Mario vs. DK played almost not e for note like this, with new mechanics/stage designs thrown in. The later sequels to that were the ones where everything changed.
@@LateOne15 When they moved to the DS, they wanted touch controls, sot hey focused on the mini-Marios and made it more like a Lemmings game. Puzzle platformers are nice, and I wish Nintendo would make more. The closets we have now is Toad Treasure Tracker, but they specifically make it where he can't do platforming, as he can't jump! (or equivalent. It's more like Load Runner 3D).
I got this game as my first VC game on my 3DS. I noticed the designers must not have expected players to use the backflip a lot, as it absolutely shatters the game's difficulty.
I honestly can't believe you're really playing this game. I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent playing this. It is one of the best gaming memories from my childhood.
The first Mario VS Donkey Kong borrowed many elements from this game, and that is not a bad thing. While I like the newer system with the clockwork mini Marios, I do wish that they would make more games in this kind of style.
I loved this game when i was little. It sucks I don't have it any more. I'm thinking about getting it on virtual console for 3ds, but at the same time, I really really wished they'd let gameboy games have the option to act as if they were on the super gameboy or not, because I would much really rather have color...
One thing I adore about the game is how much of the story of the game is told in the background. Where the exits are, what you can see in the distance of the cutscenes. Sure approaching world 1 you can see a city, but the final boss gauntlet is visible from soooooo far away. For a game with no actual story, it does tell a globe trotting adventure.
Wow! this looks really great. I never really played some of those old gameboy mario games just never really owned them when I was young. Its always nice to hear that Let's Playing is like reliving your childhood :)
It's 13 years or so since I played this game as a kid. I never completed it, though. Thank you Protonjon, for reliving the memories of this wonderful game.
I actually mentioned Super Mario Sunshine at the end of that sentence, and I didn't count Mario VS Donkey Kong because it's the sequel/spiritual successor to this game. I did forget about NSMB though, although I was referring to the spinning mechanic on the tightrope, which I believe Sunshine was the last to do that.
On a regular Game Boy or anything that's not a Super Game Boy (e.g. Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Player), since it has no SNES sound channels, Pauline's "Help! Help!" screams are changed to an 8-bit "Eee-YAAA! Eee-YAAA!" and they are a lot higher pitched compared to this.
Man, I have not played this game in years. When I was in second grade, I beat this game multiple times. Looking at your playthrough so far, I am impressed with some of the things I figured out when I was 7. It is not a foggy memory, I remember the final boss where Donkey Kong grows huge. A few friends at school had the game, and couldn't beat the first level. I stepped in and beat their game.
i visited mexico once when i was younger and a cousin let me borrow this game so i could play while im there. i thought she gave it to me and i ended up keeping it. i love this game! i usually find myself playing through it from time to time but i havent done so in a while. youre awesome for playing this!
I vote for charging through the game as fast as possible. Your Italian plumber dexterity made me swoon at the start of the video. As a kid I collected everything... even with 99 lives. Made the game just a bit more of a chore. I play it right now, but seeing you grab everything off so seamlessly is also mesmerizing in a way. My vote remains as-is!
I agree with ya ProtonJon, this game back in the day as a child was what really made me want to play Nintendo games! Most people take for granted what the early genre of video games gave us, and the fact that puzzle games can actually be some of the best games out there! Keep doing what your doing man!
Im so happy to see one of my favorite LP artists playing one of my favorite games. This was a title i felt the need to evangelize for when I was a youth. It was so remarkable and none of my friends even knew it existed. DK94 easily spent more time in my Big Gray Brick than any other game.
I don't think the LP will be COMPLETE before we meet up for TRG again (AKA, in two weeks), because I still need to work on our panel game and I'd like to post the next Superman episode soon, but we should at least be farther in the game.
Hey ProtonJon, I am so glad you decided to do this game! I remember I got this when it first came out and couldn't stop playing it!! Brings back tons of memories!!!
You do have a great "Narrating history of vidya" voice. Also, you get points not just for LPing a great, underrated game, but explaining why it's quite important to the Mario series.
I've always loved your LP's, but this one might take the cake for me. You're playing the game, but you're also delivering a message to the average gamer: don't count out a Nintendo remake. This might be my favorite Let's Play, ever. Granted, I've only seen one episode of it, but I'm sure that I will enjoy each video to come. So take your time, Jon. You're creating a masterpiece, here. :)
I was about to say this. This game has a spiritual sequel on the GBA which is Mario vs. Donkey Kong. It's nice to have you LPing a simpler game in solo again John, your commentary is awesome.
Holy crap that game was part of my childhood. I remember playing it a lot when it came out, although the later levels were a bit too much for me back then. I think I got stuck in the jungle... Thanks for the rush of nostalgia Jon :)
Glad to see you playing through this one, Jon, and I certainly believe that your enthusiasm is well warranted for this gem of a remake. I was fortunate enough to discover this game complete and in-box around this time last year at a second-hand memorabilia shop, with cartridge, manual, Super Game Boy primer, and even some old NP subscription offers from 1996; certainly a pleasant surprise, and it's now one of my favourite GB games. Now if only I still had my SNES and Super Game Boy... *sigh*.
wow, i did not remember if i had this game at one point or not until i saw the transition of the classic to the newer stages. Man this brings back some nice memories.
Ah, PhotonJon! You forgot to mention one of my favorite features about time-attacking in this game! Mario has a different little action at the end of levels depending on the time you get things done. My favorite is when he's cleared the level in an exceptional time and takes the time to come back and close the door behind himself (the polite gentleman he is). Please, take all the time you need to explain the little intricacies that make this game such a masterpiece-- No one should miss out!
One thing I always love about Nintendo, almost every Mario game has tutorials that are actually very short cut scenes, or just an image showing you what to press to continue.
...why do people keep thinking TKO isn't done? The copy of the game I was given by the creators ended where I stopped in the videos. The full game was never released. I guess there was an eventually released updated demo, but Dispari and EvilGenius never asked me to LP that, just the demo they sent me.
Actually, there's a couple of reasons to play it on the Super Game Boy over the Game Boy Player. DK 94 was the flagship title for the Super Game Boy, showing off all of the features, such as the custom backgrounds, added colour, and extra sound layers. The Game Boy Player doesn't add in those features, and basically runs the game as if it was in a GBA SP. I also prefer the SNES controller over the Gamecube controller for games like this.
Mr. Jon, I think it would be a good idea to inform the good people that they can get this game on their 3DS through a download, so they don't need to rely on ancient gameboy cartridges and super gameboys in order to play it. And there should be NO downloading of ROMS for this game. Even after all these years, this game is so awesome that Nintendo deserves your money for making it. Seriously, this is probably one of the best Mario and Gameboy games out there. I love it.
I seriously don't understand the problem with uploading very infrequently (at least from your own personal page). It just makes every video that much more enjoyable because they're so rare. I actually flipped when I saw this pop up today. I was really excited :) PS: Halfway through the video, you mentioned no other Mario game used the tightrope. Unless you're excluding the newer versions of this game (the mini Marios or w/e it's called), I believe you're correct :)
I think you might seriously be the best straight up Let's Play youtuber out there. In terms of guys doing it alone, no straight man / comedic partner? No contest. You win.
Just a heads up ProtonJon, they used the tightrope again in Mario vs. Donkey Kong, a VERY similar game to this one. I honestly though it was the first game to use it as well as other mechanics (like the handstand to high jump maneuver, getting the key to end the level only, the trashcans and trash shredders used) but wow this has been an eye-opener. This almost looks like an early version of that game just because of how similar it is. Great video dude!
omg i used to play this game all the time as a kid until i lost it and my gameboy Thank you so much Jon ive never found this game ever again since then
This is really cool to see how some of the mario mechanics came to be. We were a playstation and sega family for most of my childhood, so I never got to play any of the earlier gens of mario and dk.
This still to this day is my favorite handheld game ever! I have it on my 3ds now and still remember playing it the day it was released way back when lol.
Oh man. This game. I seriously can't wait to see how you handle some of the later levels. I pretty much vote for speedy too. Your plumber dexterity is indeed impressive.
This is one game my bro and I were super hyped for, bought as soon as we could (along with a Super Gameboy), and played the hell out of it. Have not played it in a few years, but it is on the short list for a replay.
Proton Jon, I love this game and I also love when you did the Mario Party Lets Plays with Chuggaa and NCS. Subbed to you and will seriously enjoy this lets play. Love you commentary style as well!
Woah I might have to give this game a try at some point. I'm a big fan of Manic Miner for the spectrum (or the remake on the gba) and this is giving me of it's vibes. I'm really glad I finally got around to watchin all your videos, you do a lovely job on them!
I was gonna bring up Mario VS Donkey Kong and the sequels with the Mini Mario's later on. I've beaten the majority of the games in the series, so I'm well aware of it.
Other than that I misspelt your name-- Here's a few IIRC: 1. Paulina's screams become quieter and quieter (and eventually mute) the more you die (as DK is getting further and further away). 2. Mario's comical reactions to injury (fire, getting squashed, fall damage, "bats"). There's also getting hit holding a key. 3. Definitely enemies. Those "Rappies" go nuts if you're hold a hammer (no clue why). Later on, "certain animals" get very upset if you snag them by the tail. "Mummies" lol...
I got this game back when it first came out on the 3DS VC, half expecting it to just be a port of DK Arcade. After I found out it wasn't and I played it a bunch, it instantly became one of my favorite Game Boy games of all time. It's just that good.
The Jon is back. Great LPing as usual. The presentation and timing is all perfect. I think a speed run type run will look much nicer. Unless getting all items give you something. I'm not sure never done that myself.
I loved this game as well. I'm kinda surprised you aren't commenting on Pauline's voice clips of "HELP!" that are exclusive to playing it on the Super Game Boy. Anyway, keep up the brilliant work! :)
So... We have Donkey Kong in the arcade, which introduced us to the standard platformer concept. Then Donkey Kong '94 here, which introduced an Action-Puzzle twist to the game. This then carried over to Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which introduced escort puzzles as pre-boss minigames that decide how much health Mario has in the fight by how many Mini-Marios get to the toybox, made possible by them loyally following the real Mario around. ...And then we had the rest of the Mario vs. DK games which focused entirely on the escort puzzles, but with Mario only appearing in cutscenes, the Minis have no sense of direction and so they wander aimlessly.
To everybody talking about Superman 64: There's likely a ton of writing that goes into it, some not-so-intensive-but-still-time-consuming video editing, and lots of research. Just be patient and be happy he's making videos, I mean this is Proton freakin Jon.
New Donk City has come a long way, and yet it's still kinda the same.
The fact that this LP is ten years old now. Remember when it was the Kyntt Stories and ROM hack playthroughs that were considered Jon's old LPs?
For a gameboy game this is pretty impressive. The animation, the amount of game available and just the whole trick it does with the classic arcade game. It seems like its had more effort put in than super mario land 2 (i know mario land 2 came out before this, but what is essentially just a reboot of a non-mario game its quite amazing.)
This is also what I want Mario vs DK to return to. A puzzle platformer. The minis were nice at first but then pulled a rabbids move and centralised it too much to the point it took over the entire core gameplay and changed it.
Oh holy crap, I never put the screams getting quieter and dying constantly together, that's actually really clever!
I LOVE this game and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong as well. I'd play another of these in a heart beat if they made one. :DD
One reason why Jon is a awesome LPer. Not only is he fun to watch, and has fun doing it, but you also learn a lot about the games.
Oh wow this is just straight-up the first Mario vs. Donkey Kong game
Until this video came out I had no idea that Mario vs. Donkey Kong was a sequel.
Mario vs Donkey Kong plays nothing like this, tho, with those weird robots. This one is better.

Back when they weren't a weird meta commentary on Consumerism.
This is such an enjoyable playthrough. I'm rewatching this to feel good before my weekend stops. This makes me fall asleep happy. So thanks for that.
Still my favorite gameboy game all time with Pokemon Red, I remember being a kid at a pawn shop buying both for $15 good times
I got this game as my first VC game on my 3DS. I noticed the designers must not have expected players to use the backflip a lot, as it absolutely shatters the game's difficulty.
Only Jon can play a game like this and make it a insanely informative LP.
I honestly can't believe you're really playing this game. I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent playing this. It is one of the best gaming memories from my childhood.
Well done! This game looks so good with the on the Super Game Boy. Too bad Nintendo did not include these colors on the 3DS VC version :(
Should be added as a toggle or something
Of course it looks good on the super game boy, it was specifically made to show it off.
That backflip makes things a hell of a lot easier
The first Mario VS Donkey Kong borrowed many elements from this game, and that is not a bad thing. While I like the newer system with the clockwork mini Marios, I do wish that they would make more games in this kind of style.
Time to rewatch what is possibly my favorite LP of Jon's
I like how everyone is "Oh god he updated IMPOSSIBRU", thinking they're making a totally original comment.
Your comment has aged very well
I feel old, I remember the day this came out like it was yesterday.
I loved this game when i was little. It sucks I don't have it any more. I'm thinking about getting it on virtual console for 3ds, but at the same time, I really really wished they'd let gameboy games have the option to act as if they were on the super gameboy or not, because I would much really rather have color...

For the tight rope the Super Mario 3D Land uses it as well.
This was made in 2012
My mistake
Wow! this looks really great. I never really played some of those old gameboy mario games just never really owned them when I was young.
Its always nice to hear that Let's Playing is like reliving your childhood :)
Stop obsessing over the music! You are not Chugga! XD
He has been obsessing over music long before he knew Chugga...
It's 13 years or so since I played this game as a kid. I never completed it, though. Thank you Protonjon, for reliving the memories of this wonderful game.
Old video is old but learn to clean the contacts of cartridge based games!
This game was so well made for its time. I remember playing it as a kid and how awesome it was. Really nostalgic
I think to myself, "I wonder if Jon released anything and i just missed it" And then i find this. I am now overjoyed beyond words

This was the first video game i ever played, so u can imagine the IMMENSE amount of nostalgia these vids bring me
i visited mexico once when i was younger and a cousin let me borrow this game so i could play while im there. i thought she gave it to me and i ended up keeping it. i love this game! i usually find myself playing through it from time to time but i havent done so in a while. youre awesome for playing this!
Soooooo much love for this game. Played it all the time when we went on vacation way back when I was a kid.

At first I thought Pauline's crying for help was a cat meowing. :P
Im so happy to see one of my favorite LP artists playing one of my favorite games. This was a title i felt the need to evangelize for when I was a youth. It was so remarkable and none of my friends even knew it existed. DK94 easily spent more time in my Big Gray Brick than any other game.

Mario uses Hammers for weapons, and at one point in the game has to dodge barrels like Donkey Kong. *MINDFREAK*
I never knew this game existed. It's fascinating.
Oh man I had this game! I loved every second of it. Pure nostalgia.
Thank you Protonjon, now you made me pick up my copy of Donkey Kong again and making me remember childhood memories.
One thing I always love about Nintendo, almost every Mario game has tutorials that are actually very short cut scenes, or just an image showing you what to press to continue.
You uploading this just made my week! (especially since I've been bedridden for a few days now ^^')
Best part of waiting on your videos. They're always worth it in the end.
This is great to watch, you are not like that usually indeed but to hear you loving this game so much is great.
...why do people keep thinking TKO isn't done? The copy of the game I was given by the creators ended where I stopped in the videos. The full game was never released. I guess there was an eventually released updated demo, but Dispari and EvilGenius never asked me to LP that, just the demo they sent me.
Yeah, every time I look at you, I'm reminded of the unchecked Subscription box on your browser. I then go and cry myself to sleep.

I beat the game in like a hour but this is one of the funniest LP's ever! I'm subscribing.
Aw, it's fun seeing Jon be so nostalgic.

I actually flipped when I saw this pop up today. I was really excited :)
PS: Halfway through the video, you mentioned no other Mario game used the tightrope. Unless you're excluding the newer versions of this game (the mini Marios or w/e it's called), I believe you're correct :)
Well, for half of the video, i thought pauline's yelling was your cat in the background.
What a great surprise. Really looking forward to more of this, loved this game as a kid!
I think you might seriously be the best straight up Let's Play youtuber out there. In terms of guys doing it alone, no straight man / comedic partner? No contest. You win.
Just a heads up ProtonJon, they used the tightrope again in Mario vs. Donkey Kong, a VERY similar game to this one. omg i used to play this game all the time as a kid until i lost it and my gameboy Thank you so much Jon ive never found this game ever again since then
Wow, I start playing DK '94 recently and now Jon makes an LP of it. This is amazing.
This is really cool to see how some of the mario mechanics came to be. We were a playstation and sega family for most of my childhood, so I never got to play any of the earlier gens of mario and dk.
The music is very nostalgic. Really great game with good memories. Love the final DK battle!
Glad to see you back for more Let's Play action! Please don't eat dust for dinner ever again, if you do we won't have anything to occupy the day.
Man, I loved this game when I was a kid! Please do more of this!
Who's here after seeing the Mario vs. Donkey Kong remake in the latest Direct?
Does this means we can hope for even more LPs in the future? *-*
I was gonna bring up Mario VS Donkey Kong and the sequels with the Mini Mario's later on. I've beaten the majority of the games in the series, so I'm well aware of it.
I love you for playing this game.
Thank you very much for this LP.
Sincerely, thank you.
This is actually one of my favorite gameboy games. It has some really hard spots, but it's creative and fun.
Other than that I misspelt your name-- Here's a few IIRC:
Oh man, this brings back some memories, I loved this game, and I loved Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, which was basically a remake of this.
I loooooved playing this game back in the day. Oh the nostalgia~
Don't sweat it, you weren't the first person to think TKO wasn't done, even in the comments on this video.
...you do realize that the irony of posting this on a video I just uploaded is staggering, right?
I got this game back when it first came out on the 3DS VC, half expecting it to just be a port of DK Arcade. After I found out it wasn't and I played it a bunch, it instantly became one of my favorite Game Boy games of all time. It's just that good.
this game, mario land 1 and 2, and links awakining were some of the best Gameboy titles IMO. I have many memories of playing all four of those games.
The Jon is back. Great LPing as usual. The presentation and timing is all perfect. I think a speed run type run will look much nicer. Unless getting all items give you something. I'm not sure never done that myself.
just watching you play this makes me want to play it SO much
OMG so glad ur doing an LP one of my favorite games on the original gameboy as well awesome
I loved this game as well. I'm kinda surprised you aren't commenting on Pauline's voice clips of "HELP!" that are exclusive to playing it on the Super Game Boy. Anyway, keep up the brilliant work! :)
Well, your commentary will always keep me subscribed.
The prequel to one of my favorite Mario games, last 12 minutes in pure awe.
So... We have Donkey Kong in the arcade, which introduced us to the standard platformer concept. Then Donkey Kong '94 here, which introduced an Action-Puzzle twist to the game. i remember this old game man looking back at it i can see so many elements from sunshine
Your commentary when you're not with the guys is very entertaining! It's nice just to hear just your voice. :D
It's cool to see a classic mario game let's played. Pretty cool ProtonJon
To everybody talking about Superman 64:
There's likely a ton of writing that goes into it, some not-so-intensive-but-still-time-consuming video editing, and lots of research. Just be patient and be happy he's making videos, I mean this is Proton freakin Jon.
