C1 and as a nurse I was translating your accident (falling, bumping your head and discerning blood) into proper medical jargon (habit). I do however use common language when speaking to patients due to their diverse education levels and cultural backgrounds. Example: I use the word pee instead of saying urinate. You can't prejudge what people may or may not understand. The most important thing is that they understand your directions and education regarding their health. 😊

As a native speaker who just happened to see this video in their recommended, while I obviously understood all the levels, the advanced C1 level only really works for written English, like with books or poems, not many people speak like that in everyday life. So for any non native speakers or learners, don't worry too much if you don't understand the C1 level just yet, the lower levels are perfectly fine to get your point across in everday conversation.

Yeah but it's still easy to understand. There wasn't one word in the whole video that i don't understand.
I think that as non native speaking is by far the most difficult part. But tbh i think that I'd get the chance to travel to some part of american or the uk for 2-3 months that would change drastically.
My mind goes lightning fast when i think in English but when i speak it's like i stumble on words and they don't come out right, like i know exactly how they should sound but my mouth isn't used to the pronunciation.

    • @akbar8427
      @akbar8427 2 года назад +8

@The Riddler what I've noticed over the years is that i can understand people that talk bad in English better than the natives. We used to have people come from the uk or america ti teach us English in class and they wouldn't understand what people were trying to say but i knew exactly and i could tell them.
Same goes for Spanish, i can "translate" what someone's trying to say to a native speaker because it's like they need to hear the words pronounced perfectly in order to understand. It's pretty funny tbh🤣

I would like to posture the thought that perhaps the grand quantity of native English speakers lacking such a girth of vocabulary is due directly to a horrendous public education system in conjunction with modern values cultivated from media across a multitude of mediums which portray intellectuals as "uncool".
Edit: It has been brought to my attention that I should have said "posit" or "postulate" instead of "posture" and I'm man enough to admit when I've made a mistake(even though I still think posture works in this context haha). I have nothing but respect to anyone who has learned a second language, but to those native English speakers who really think the comment is pretentious, you're only proving my point. The biggest word I used was "conjunction" or "horrendous". Are those actually big words though? Sure, you could speak simply but vocabulary is about being precise. Why don't you go tell the Eskimos that they only need one word for snow.

There were just two words in C-1 that I didn't know the exact translation to my first language to (or had to think for a bit) but I still knew what it meant. That being said, I am still not confident in my vocabulary and my ability to choose the correct words for the [my] thoughts I want to express. I am pretty good at writing comprehensible phrases but even that takes a bit of an effort to choose the words I want to use and most of the times I need to read what I wrote [my writing] for any mistakes I made and, almost all the time, there are plenty of them, including the comment I am now writing.

I remember reading once that the point of communication isn't to sound smart but to convey an idea in a way that's easily understandable to everyone. With that being said, no matter how advanced a person may be at english, simple words are always better than more complex ones that mean the same thing

      Not always though.
Often, more complex words can refer to a more specific or precise idea. The common word would be just as acceptable, but maybe not as accurate.
Not everything is meant to be understood by everyone, especially if it means loosing subtlety.
Also, pertinence is an important factor in communication. The principle of telling the most with the fewest words. Explaining an idea with a few sentences to avoid a more complex word is a big no for pertinence.

From my experience, the students with a lower English level had a more difficult time understanding the sayings or at least recognizing what the saying in English means (as opposed to them saying the same type of thing in their native language)...I think that was the reason for the more poetic speech in this test.

I'm native German with Russian parents, so I was already bilingual when I was a small child. At around the age of 12 is when I started talking to my American neighbors. I live close to the US Airport in Ramstein which meant we had lots of US soldiers stationed around these parts of Germany. My English was... A-1 at best. But I gradually improved speaking, reading and writing over the years. Now with 18 years of using English as a primary language, 2 of those 18 years I lived in an English-only environment, I think I'm allowed to say I'm C-2 or native level.
    British accent
    Freedom accent
    Irish accent
    You name it!
The key to getting to C-2 level is persistence, repetition, willingness to look up new words every now and then.
Now... I'll go back to learning A-1 Japanese which makes my native friends cringe.

I think it's important to expose yourself to a variety of world englishes if you wish to communicate effectively with people from all over the world. A B2 level of proficiency will probably be fine in everyday situations talking to most Brits, Americans, Australians, Kiwis, etc. but it takes a fair bit of practice and just exposure to understand some heavier accents and creoles like Patois and I think that for just communication that's more beneficial than advancing to a C1 or C2 level, which will most likely help more in something like an academic setting.
