- “King Kong Escapes” was released in 1967 as an adaptation of sorts to the Rankin-Bass cartoon, “The King Kong Show” that had aired the year prior. In a way, “King Kong Escapes” feels more like a Japanese remake of the original 1933 King Kong film. Sure, we have more out there elements from the cartoon like Mechani-Kong and Dr. Who but for the most part we get the same story from the ‘33 film. A group of human characters end up on an island where they encounter Kong. Everyone’s favorite gorilla battles an Elasmosaurus and a Tyrannosaurus Rex or in the case of King Kong Escapes, he battles a Giant Sea Serpent and an unnamed Gorosaurus with the film ending in the city rather than Skull Island or Mondo Island. The film was directed by Ishiro Honda, who at this point had been behind the majority of the Showa Godzilla flicks as well as Rodan, Atragon, and War Of The Gargantuas. Much like those other films, Eiji Tsuburaya was behind the special effects. Akira Ifukube composed the score for the film while Tomoyuki Tanaka served as an executive producer. A new addition to this production team is Arthur Rankin Jr. who acted on set as a technical advisor. Rankin was part of Rankin-Bass and oversaw production since the film was based on his cartoon. While I’m not sure if he had any substantial say in the making of this movie, it is interesting that he was there during the production of the film.
But is the movie any good? Yeah, I think so.

I have the original "King Kong Escapes " on VHS with the original Japanese soundtrack. Still holds up to this day.

King Kong escapes is actually my favorite King Kong movie, it’s just so fun and campy and I love it
Great review! I first saw this one when I was a older teen back in 2005 and didn't like it too much. However over the years it really grew on me and is a fun watch. Hopefully one day we'll get the film released with Linda Miller's original English lines since unfortunately she was dubbed over by another actress in the regular dub
I saw this when I was a kid and have watched it so many times since. One of my favorite classic kaiju movies. Very silly! Very fun!

I love King Kong Escapes, It's like a Mix between a Kaiju Flick and James Bond.
Hideyo Amamoto also played the Kindly Toymaker in Godzilla's Revenge.
He also played the mystical old man in GMK.
I really like this movie! Me and my dad saw this at G-fest 28 and weren’t expecting how fun, funny and awesome it’d be!(they played the goofy English dub) Then the next day I bought the blu-ray and got Linda Miller’s autograph on a poster that I hung on my door.
We need more Kong movies that aren’t just remakes of the original King Kong movie
I would really be happy if Mechani-Kong was the main villain in a solo Kong movie. He’s very underrated. Also, a Mechani-Kong vs MechaGodzilla needs to happen someday.
Yeah I didn't even know about this film until 10 years old I think how I got it was one day I got off of school or something and my mother went and bought me this two DVD set of King Kong vs Godzilla and King Kong escapes she got it at this cool ass DVD store in the Mall when malls where dope af back in the day .
It was the first toho film I watched when I was 9 probably.
I used watch a Godzilla and Kong vs Mechagodzilla and Mecha Kong fan made short movie as a kid

No one talks about this movie so much The Asylum decided to rip it off. That trilogy is still better than anything GxK could do.
I still talk about king Kong escapes
You calling him "Mecha-NYE-kong" instead of "Mech-ANNIE-kong" is killin' me. Nevertheless, as one of the handful of actual Kong fans, thanks for giving King Kong Escapes its due! It's my favourite Kong film after the 1933 original, and is the best non-Godzilla Showa Toho kaiju film. It's got everything and it's both equally zany and groovy!
I hope they bring MechaniKong to the Monsterverse
Yeah I've seen it and I own a copy of it too! I really like how Mechani Kong looks along with the many bombs he has on his belt' its a shame he has not made a reappearance like Mechagodzilla has over the years, perhaps he will appear in a future monsterverse film?
If nothing else perhaps as some kind of suit of armor for King Kong to wear pretty much like an iron man suit which I could see it happening' if not for Mechani Kong there would be no Mechagodzilla today as we know it!
Kong's metal gauntlet in the recent film could be a slight nod.
There's also the Titan Hunter from the comics.
