  • Well, it's hot and humid, so why not take a vacation to the north. That is just what I did and in my travels, I ran across a fellow beekeeper that I met back in January. I had a great visit and broke out the camera to take a quick look at his home apiary. Come on along and let's meet Jeff of Windy Ridge Apiaries.

    Thanks for joining me in my bee yard here in Louisiana as I share how I maintain my beehives. My videos are not meant to be 'How To' videos, but simply me sharing my experiences in beekeeping as I learned it from my mentors, teachers, and studies.

    I live in NH and one thing about being up north is there's little to no dearth. The spring flowers giveaway to a golden rod rush without out skipping a beat. So, there is less to worry about in the dead of summer where most people down south have to feed and worry about robbing.

    • @windyridgeapiaries
      @windyridgeapiaries 11 месяцев назад

      Hello @Ittiz, true that! Our "mini dearth" will start in mid August, so harvest time is quickly approaching. Once the honey supers are pulled off, then I put on some pollen patties for a week or two, then start to feed 1:1 sugar water (with Hive Alive) until mid to end of September. Then I switch to 2:1 sugar water until wrap-up in late November. I keep the bucket feeders out until December, because there are still some rare days when temperatures are high enough that the girls are still flying. And do they flock to the feeders! Thank you for watching! -Jeff and Diane

So what do you do on the weekends? Head to the hills... Beautiful area!!! The -57° was a record setter for the area. About 90 miles north the state record of -60° was set that same night. beekeeping in NY certainly is a challenge, but lots of people up here have had good success. a big key is breeding from northern queens that have survived winters well with strong hives that made plenty of stores during the summer/fall. right now alot of my hives are already backfilling their 2nd brood boxes with honey in preparation for winter! we still have goldenrod coming, but i'm not quite sure the bees know that. and as for coming out of winter, i'm not even thinking about opening hives until sometime in late april. march is a killer month up here, its when alot of hives will starve out.,

    • @windyridgeapiaries
      @windyridgeapiaries 11 месяцев назад

      Hello @time2fly2124, yes, March is usually a mix of cold and snow. March is usually our snowiest month of winter. Sometimes we will be a few days of nice "warm" (above freezing) weather that will allow for opening up the hives and checking on resources. This past spring we had 5 consecutive days of "warm" weather in March. But the cold returned and stuck around until mid-April. We are usually installing packages with snow on the ground, and sometimes falling out of the sky. Sigh. Thank you for watching! -Jeff and Diane

Pretty timely video for me actually, I have two bird baths in my yard and was about to clean out one that was full of broken down leaves that I was about to move or take down completely. I did notice some bees in what little water was left in it the other day, now I'm going to start using that one as a bee watering station I think and keep small amounts of water in it this summer and watch how things go.

      Hello Aaron, and thanks for watching the videos. I have been to the northwest part of the state and enjoy every part of Minnesota except for the big cities. It is very challenging to have bees where you are, but keep learning and pushing. You will be an inspiration to people who would see you beekeeping because I I know that we take for granted that we use the sound as part of our inspections. To see your hive and that you raise the bees without that one aspect is very encouraging. Thanks you again for the support.

    I have a theory about the water. I think it might bee the ph level.

      Very well could be. Great observation. It’s definitely something about that compost and algae.

      Well, I’m not a great teacher, but I try my best to put out good info.
