    Good video. Major omission though is the General Strike of 1926. Surrey and India Docks mostly Millwall then Royal Docks mostly West Ham. One set of do kers supported the strike ans another didn't. Not sure which way around it was. Caused some tension at the time which played out in the derby matches.

    My step dad used to be really deeply entrenched in Millwall hooliganism, growing up in Nunhead near the stadium. Told me all kinds of stories from smacking up the NF trying to sell news papers in their pubs, to massive riots and facing off horse charges, cops taking off badges to get away with brutality.
    Working Class have a strong sense of unity, football teams create sense of collective identity, not surprising during economic hardships football firms would boom when young men want a cause or outlet. Also isn't surprising far-right thugs targeted football hooligans to join their movements.
    If only these lot could come out for real political change the same way they come out to fight eachother.

    • @TheFamousMileEnd
      @TheFamousMileEnd Год назад +27

      I don’t think you’d like the political change either West Ham or Millwall would bring in. Both us and Millwall are two sides of the same coin, and politically speaking both fanbases lean right. The proof is the voting patters of where most West Ham and Millwall live nowadays in the Essex and Kent.
      A lot of people associate working-class and progressive politics, and it just doesn’t match. Not in England at least.

    The rivalry between Millwall and West Ham United is one of the longest-standing and most bitter in English football. The two teams, then known as Millwall Athletic and Thames Ironworks, both originated in the East End of London, and were located less than three miles apart. They first played each other in the 1899-1900 FA Cup. The match was historically known as the Dockers derby, as both sets of supporters were predominantly dockers at shipyards on the River Thames. Consequently, each set of fans worked for rival firms who were competing for the same business; this intensified the tension between the teams. In 1904, West Ham moved to the Boleyn Ground which was then part of Essex until a London boundary change in 1965. In 1910, Millwall moved across the River Thames to New Cross in South East London and the teams were no longer East London neighbours. Both sides have relocated since, but remain just under four miles apart. Millwall moved to The Den in Bermondsey in 1993 and West Ham to the London Stadium in Stratford in 2016.

    There have been just 27 fixtures between the clubs in the last 105 years. What I can't work out is this: is the rivalry so fierce because the game is so rarely played or despite it being so rarely played?
    I grew up further out into South East London in an West Ham-supporting family. When I see what Lewisham Council was doing to Millwall a few years ago, the logical side of my brain recognises that a couple of seasons in the Premier League would allow Millwall to secure their future and the legacy of football in that area. However, the West Ham fan in me cannot stomach Millwall in the Premier League.
