    I used to have a hard time remembering which one of these to use in writing: their or there, I finally got it, "there" is NOT a person. it's so easy now!!!

    2022.....things have changed drastically...a famous actress said she has to
    call her daughter "they", not she nor he...

    @iswearenglish I've read most of most of those authors, and they used it only in dialogue. They used other illitericisms in dialogue as well, like double negatives etc.

    I agree with Bregowald. Using a plural 'they' or 'their' as a pronoun for a singular antecedent is incorrect and should not be excused. Just because Shakespeare and Austen used it in fictional dialogue does not then mean it should be an acceptable staple of formal (or even informal) writing or speech.

    'They' instead of 'he' is substandard English and sounds stupid. Just say 'he' - it's gender neutral. No reason to say 'he or shy' or 'they'.
