Yes Omar, we want YOUR top ten! For beginners i would also offer up the Silver Surfer epic with Steve Englehart, John Byrne, and Marshall Rogers. Incredible art, kicks off the modern era for Silver Surfer.
I second the list of YOUR top ten!! I loved Kraven’s Last Hunt and Triumph and Torment (both recommendations from your channel). And I would love more of your thoughts :)
Thanks, Omar! Your channel got me back into physical books (I bought seven omnibus books in the last few months because of your reviews!). As much as I enjoy the omni format, I do like the Epic format as one that is physically easier to read (i.e., I can read in bed or take it on a trip as opposed to omnibus which is limited to my home office desk). They're also a bit easier on my wallet! ;-) I'd add Amazing Spider-Man Kraven's Last Hunt (which essentially doubles as the collected wedding arc and includes Spidey vs. Wolverine), the soon to be re-released ASM Ghosts of the Past (DeFalco and Frenz were "my" Spidey creators as a kid in the 80s), Captain America "The Captain" (with John Walker), and the soon to be re-released X-Men Dark Phoenix saga in all its soap opera glory.
X-Men Volumes 5-10 are an amazing era/collection of not just for X-Men but for comic writing in general. They include stories like Second Genesis, Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix, God Loves, Man Kills and The Brood Saga, they are just some of the best comic stories ever written and the artwork is absolutely brilliant, i can't recommend these volume enough for new readers and any fan of The X-Men
co-sign on that Thanos Quest epic, was a blast to read. I would include Kraven’s Last Hunt Epic though. Spider-Man vs. Wolverine, Wedding/prelude…and KLH all are great.
This was such a cool idea for a video. I'm mostly an omnibus collector, but man it does get hard trying to read something so big, and adjust it for my own personal comfort. The comfort factor alone for Epic Collections has incentivized me to maybe invest in more down the road.
Great list! I would add Hulk Epic 13: Crossroads as well for that character. If I were to introduce someone to Spider-Man Epics, I think I would go with vol 3 though. I think it turned up a anottch when John Romita came on board
Very good list! As for which Spider-Man volume to pick, I personally would've gone with Vol. 7: The Goblin's Last Stand purely due to how important that moment is to Spider-Man's history and comics in general. But Vol. 1: Great Power is still a very good choice. I would love to see you make another one of these lists sometime and include some other heroes that weren't included like Thor, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Hulk.
I'm glad omar included silver surfers epics in the video, i thought i was the only one that bought those volumes. I first started reading the essential volumes at my local library and knew I found a gem and when the epic line was announced ten years ago i easily bought freedom for $19.99 and finally got parable last year because the hardcover is impossible to find, also good for mentioning punisher he is the most neglected character in the epic collections 💀
12:51 Can confirm. This was my second Epic Collection that I bought alongside my first (Kraven's Last Hunt). It was FAR different from any comic I read prior, and it's just intriguing. If I wasn't enticed by the philosophical dilemmas, it was Surfer's guilt and need to atone. If not that, it was the universal make-up such as species, planets or entities. Surfer crept into my top 5 Marvel characters because of this book.
Under Siege needs a reprint! Thanks for your list, would also be interested in your personal favorites. I'd probably pick The Demon Bear Saga as a favorite.
Great video Omar!!! I’ve been waiting for a video like this from someone for the past two years and NOTHING like it exists! Can you please also make a list of your favorite Epics???
@@paulmcgrew2932 Well, Matt is so utterly destroyed that he leaves the city, so all the supporting characters kinda disappear. The Mary and Kingpin plots don't get properly resolved until the "Last Rites" Epic.
Such a great video! I think I’ll grab the Silver Surfer and Daredevil Epics mentioned as well as Kravens Last Hunt (I have the early Spider-Man and FF in masterworks). Would love to see videos on your favorite absolutes for new readers (or favorite overall)!
A top 10 most wanted Epics would be great! You can mention gap fillers, new lines, special mapping if it is not a Volume 1, event focused Epics (Marvel Epic Collections: Marvel Events!!) And other crazy ides! Also it will be a chance to omit all the X-Men titles since you want them in OMNIBUS format!
I've always thought that Batman Year One was more of, if not a retcon, at least an expansion of his origin. Amazing Fantasy #15 is a true origin story and I would argue the best. I would also love your top 10 but could you also include a community poll, similar to your reprint poll? Then you could have 2 lists in one!
Thank you Omar for doing a vid on a subject I really wanted to see. This'll help me out even for older fans who've been collecting epics from the beginning. I'll add some of these to my list.👍 Hope you have a good weekend🙂
Planning on picking up some Classic Fantastic Four, Doctor Strange Triumph and Torment, and Kraven's Last Hunt. The Moon Knight and X-Men ones seem interesting too.
Thanks for all your videos, but also this one in particular because I had been searching for something like this in the last few weeks. I got back into comics last year and have spent a lot of money on omni's (mostly wanting to read everything I can about Spider-Man and Batman), but I have also discovered other cool stories along the way. Just recently purchased my first Epic Collection and thought, man maybe I should have been collecting these instead of Omni's all along. But there is also so many Omni's I want. So I don't want to collect the entire epic collection, but I love how easy they are to read. I'm wanting to get some epics on characters and lines that I'm not as into to see a bit what they are about, like the Avengers, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four. I took a chance two weeks ago and bought that very Fantastic Four Epic (and I'm hoping to read it this weekend). Sorry this comment got long in the tooth. Just wanted to thank you for all you do! Just joined your patreon this past week because your videos are so helpful! Going to have to checkout the discord soon!
Nice collection of Epics. I am on board with all of them as being some of the finest examples of each run. I would just suggest the readers wait until September for what I consider the best Avengers run with John Byrne "The Yesterday Quest". Have you ever noticed when reading your favourite story "The Siege" that the writer had to cover for the artist forgetting to draw Tiger Shark in the later issues of the story arc, with some clunky dialogue? From memory it went something like: "I sent Tiger Shark away by cab because we don't need him anymore and it will confuse the police!"
I got goosebumps when you talked about Under Siege - Stern, Buscema and Palmer. It was a perfect comic arc, unmatched in tempo, drawings and plot, in my opinion.
Avengers Under Siege, FF The Coming of Galactus, ASM Great Power, Captain America Dawn's Early Light and Daredevil Touch of Typhoid (though I'd argue you need the issues just prior for the full story Ann Nocenti builds) represent some of Marvel's greatest and certainly make my all time top ten for epic collections! Interesting that a lot of those have great and, well, legendary, inkers (Palmer, Sinnott, Williamson) contributing as well as great writers and artists. Though I must admit I watched the list waiting for "The Crossing" to show up 😄.
Omar, a top 10 video idea that I would love to see and doubt others have suggested would be "Top 10 DC Deluxe Editions" since there seems to be a decent amount that have come out recently. But then there are the issues some people have with the paper stock and binding of these newer Deluxes, so it'd be interesting to see if any of those made your list purely because of content.
Im so glad moon knight made the list! I got epic collection volume 1 and the 2 volumes for midnight mission and he might just be my favorite superhero rn. Can't wait to read cool stories of his
I would very much like to know your personal top ten epic collections Omar, so yes, please do that video. Also, as someone who loves Wolverine as much as you do, I would very much enjoy a video of your top ten Wolverine solo stories. THAT would be a fun video to watch!😉😊
I need to read the epic collections of Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, DareDevil, Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Moon Knight, Silver Surfer, Captain America, and everything else because I'm too obsessed with Reading Marvel Comics right now.
The fantastic four volume 2 omnibus was the 2nd one I ever bought. Right after uncanny x-men vol 1. I still have not read FF after over 10 years. Ive been reading through spiderman from the very beginning and will do FF next.
For those in the UK, a Hatchett hardcover has just come out of "Under Siege" but that collects just the core 270 to 277 rather than the larger epic, but its also cheaper (and could be argued on better paper)!
Love my epic collections best way to read a bunch of comics and to get into a series’s also some of them are far cheaper than getting 1 or 2 single issues
Love this top 10 but if you got a moment do you have any Recommendations for the epic collections of Iron man, Hulk, Thor, Wolverine, black panther, ghost rider, and venom? Love your content
Pre ordered the new lore of olympus last week can't wait to get it I already own 1-3 I also own scott pilgrim 1-6 in color hardback loki agent of asgard a handful of harly quinn raven beast teen Titans hard back box set I'm not starfire I highly recommend that for your young ladies adventures of god another good webtoon resleases and bowie and autobiography graphic novel hardback of David bowie got them all but one on Amazon got one harly quinn at target REY REY 😀
I have a small wish for collecting all Captain America EC. How many of them are out there? And do you know anything about upcoming collections? Keep up the good work, Omar!
Hey Omar, I missed the last Q&A but I will try to catch the next won, in case you check this do you know if DC will ever or plan to release a Hitman Omni??
Is there a delay in the publication of several volumes that're schedules for next year? I realize it's not a good idea to rely entirely on Wikipedia, but I noticed the page dedicated to listing Epic Collections says the release of New Mutants volume 4 says the date is "unknown", as is the release date for a volume collecting Blade stories. Will these editions eventually be released, or, is there a better source where to determine if and when planned editions of Epic Collections will be released to the market? Anyway, thanks very much for all these recommendations of Epic Collections that've been published so far. I own plenty myself, including all the 9 volumes of Avengers so far going up to 1977, and hope to buy more in the future to complete my collection in trades. It's even better than the Masterworks.
@ Thanks! i’m interested in getting back issues since my parents gave my comic collection away . Unraveling Epic Collections, Omnibus’s, and some called Trade Paperbacks is getting confusing!
I'm not sure anything from the 1960s is a good start for a new reader, the style is so old-fashioned. Yes they have massive historical significance, but to hook a new reader in 2023?
I just completed omni 1 (the Ditko era) and it was fun for me as an existing fan who wanted to see the origins, but not something I would hand to someone who has never read Spidey before. I base this on my 30-something sister who struggles with basically any art prior to digital coloring. But it might depend on your age group, personal preference, and other exposure to comics.

It's great but vol 7 is out of print and very expensive at the moment, so not a good jumping on point for new collectors right now.
@@collectingmemoriesyt yeah I’d wait for those expensive volumes to get reprinted
Thanos Quest is one of the best books I've ever read, great picks! I would also go with the Fantastic 4 epic: New Fantastic 4 by Walt Simonson
