Not finding a place to tie up for the night was really scary! There were river boats and barges running all night that could have killed us! And the wake hitting our little boat tied up on the river! 😳 We stayed a week in Greenville Ms, dad hit a log and bent the prop, at the little marina we met people that took us all home with them that week! It was amazing. My dad bought our boat from a guy that built it in his barn. Dad had never owned a boat, so his first trip was an epic one! We all survived, still live in Florida, but over the years it was quite a story to tell! Thanks for filming your trip, it brings back a lot of memories for me from 61 years ago, Mom and Dad are gone now but not forgotten ❤️
I'm 5 years late to the party....one thing to note: when meeting or coming up behind a barge, be VERY wary of logs just under the surface. The turbulence from the props often causes water logged logs to ALMOST come to the surface, and they can do tons of damage to smaller boats.

They aren't "barges." Or, rather they ARE; but when they're a unit being shoved under power, they're a "tow." And the boat that shoves them is a "towboat."
Dan drove overnight to grab the truck and trailer and bring it back. I was not in support of this decision; but with him and Kevin gone, I did not want to trek this leg of the journey alone, so I had no choice but to comply. Next time around, I now have the confidence to do it alone if my crew is too afraid to accompany me through a storm on a river in an ocean-rated boat :)

Im planning on a river trip i was wondering why yall didnt plan a bit better ur fuel stops and or carry more fuel aboard. I know its a bit more expensive on the river but convenience is less stress. my study shows many gas stop easily obtained with a 100 to 150 mile range..
are you certain those fuel stops carry Gasoline and not Diesel? there are stretches of over 300 miles on the Mississippi where there are indeed Diesel stations, but they do not have Gasoline.
we didn't really clarify in the video, but dan rented a car, drove the rental to the truck (which had been driven by another friend from st luis to new orleans) in new orleans, got it, drove back to grafton, then to memphis... he was very afraid of the storms and nobody could change his mind about the matter.
Question for someone who has done this. Is there enough of a current to drift on the Mississippi? I am thinking of doing this as part of the great loop and I would be in no particular hurry to get anywhere. Plus I would be doing this on an extreme shoestring budget, so anything I could save in gas would be beneficial.
Shoal draft sailboat, as large as you can afford. Have the mast and boom shipped to Mobile Alabama. Have them step the there (do not hire any work done on the boat there unless you want to waste a month in a shit hole) then sail to Tampa and get a beer. Provision your boat with as much cold beer as you can due to that being the currency of choice when trying to get fresh shrimp from the shrimp boats (well worth it, and get a de-viener) sail to Key West and get drunk until your liver is properly swiss cheese, then sail up to West Palm and once again fill boat with beer before heading to Bahama and getting Conch. Stay a month or so there or until the beer almost runs out and head back. OK that was year1 all sewed up.
Fishpharmer some of the crew was very green and were afraid of the storms in the area. There was no need for us to take out as Herbert was designed for the ocean and it took a mutiny to get me to agree to skipping that part. Just know for your trip you will encounter severe weather at least twice along the way and plan for it.

Did you really sit at the ramp dock for 6 hours to put on tags and fix your engine? I hope it wasn't a busy ramp or at least there was another dock for people who arrived prepared.
no, we were there about an hour, and it was a fairly slow day, maybe 3 boats came by in that time. Since the dock is L-shaped, there was plenty of room for them and us to share :)
Shnarkle VonBarkle there was a storm in the forecast and rather than go through it, Dan insisted on stopping the trip, driving a rental car to our end point where our trailer was parked, grabbing the trailer, towing it back to where Herbert was, and then trailering into Memphis. I tried to explain how we were on an ocean-rated vessel on a river and there was nothing the river could throw at a boat like Herbert that it couldn't handle with ease, but no amount of logic or persuasion could change his mind. So, much against my will, we trailered Herbert to Memphis.

His dialogue reminds me of the classic surf flick, Endless Summer. I like it. Easy-going, fun to watch. If it was intended to be an in-depth, how-to video, I might expect more details about food, etc., but it's not. Not all videos on youtube are meant to be free seminars. It documented their trip, from their perspective, with dialogue in the moment.

it takes a lot of preparation, but it is surprisingly easy to do if you have a good base of boating knowledge and camping experience

I thought they closed the locks up here years ago due to invasive species

Not.... Really, no. You need speed through the water to maintain steering control. And you DEFINITELY need to be able to steer.
Mind you, a small boat with a small outboard motor is fully sufficient.
