Lockheed Martin is currently developing 300 kw lasers for the IFPC-HEL program but they're going to have to be considerably smaller and lighter to be used on an F-22. But, the DOD is using an aerospace company for the project so I think that's the general idea. The range depends on a lot of different things. Depending on the wavelength used, humidity, rain or water vapor could affect the power levels with distance. Attenuation of the beam (beam spread) is also a constraint. Dust or atmospheric haze could matter, but not so much at close range.

The DOD contractors such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing have been working on micronization of minimally the 60 KW laser system for a few years and little bits and pieces of DOD publications has been hinting at this. Thus the Sixth Generation fighter (which may already be in limited service) will have this weapon system. Nothing beats the speed of light.

Remember that Laser is not as easy to block like the sun's rays because sun block only blocks the harmful UV rays that causes cancer. You can do a simple experiment by using laser cutters. If you can block it with sun block then that will answer your question. Reflective devices is not practical to install in a fighter plane. Imagine that putting reflective devices to a fighter jets is like announcing to the world you are coming. If that's the case, I will just use a conventional weapon to shot you down.

Still not that impressed with the laser. I remember the first laser designed to shoot down a missile from an aircraft - just over 40 years ago. It was designed to be mounted in the belly of a C130. It was designed using supercooled chips back before we had higher temperature chips. It looked like something from a sci fi movie. Pretty cool. The first test was announced in Air Force Times in Spring 1982. Still, I would have expected more miniaturization. Then again, the power and range have likely been stepped up a few magnitudes.

Remember that Laser is not as easy to block like the sun's rays because sun block only blocks the harmful UV rays that causes cancer. You can do a simple experiment by using laser cutters. If you can block it with sun block then that will answer your question. Reflective devices is not practical to install in a fighter plane. Imagine that putting reflective devices to a fighter jets is like announcing to the world you are coming. If that's the case, I will just use a conventional weapon to shot you down.

Still not that impressed with the laser. I remember the first laser designed to shoot down a missile from an aircraft - just over 40 years ago. It was designed to be mounted in the belly of a C130. It was designed using supercooled chips back before we had higher temperature chips. It looked like something from a sci fi movie. Pretty cool. The first test was announced in Air Force Times in Spring 1982.
Still, I would have expected more miniaturization. Then again, the power and range have likely been stepped up a few magnitudes.

Laser weapon on F22? Where's the power source? Laser weapons require huge electric power and where's the generator? You can't carry batteries due to weight issues. It's more convincing to have laser weapons on the AC130 gunship.
