Testament?!?!?? My fav thrash metal band since thrash metal began. Plus, Skolnick and Peterson are a deadly guitar combo. So many great songs.

The drummer is Gene Hoglan and today he's not part of TESTAMENT, but what can I say about Gene... He's a beast on the drums!!

This is pure power! The singer had throat surgery for cancer before this ban re-united. He came back strong and that proves that strength always survives the odds!!!!
The atomic clock Gene Hoglan on drums. One of the best metal drummers out there and highly skilled. I met him once and he is very down to earth.

Ohhhh, shieeet. Testament is one of my faves from back in the day. I saw them live on the Practice What You Preach tour in like ...1990? It was wild! My favorite songs that you should check out are Trial By Fire, Souls of Black, Practice What You Preach.

Testament was one of the first wave of thrash metal bands like Metallica and Slayer... the band was originally called Legacy, formed in Oakland, California back in 1982 by guitarist Eric Peterson... original vocalist Steve 'Zetro' Souza left the band around 1985 to join bay area thrashers Exodus... The band was signed in 1986 by Megaforce Records (Metallica & Anthrax's former label) in conjunction w/ Atlantic Records, but they had to change the name cos 'Legacy' was already claimed... they settled on the name Testament and released their first album in 1987 titled 'The Legacy' w/ the line-up of - Chuck Billy (lead vocals), Eric Peterson (guitar), Alex Skolnick (lead guitar), Greg Christian (bass) & Louie Clemente (drums).
MTV helped Testament gain exposure and the 2nd album 'The New Order' (1988) became a success, selling over 400K copies in the US... 3rd album 'Practice what you preach' (1989) sold close to half million copies... 4th album 'Souls of black' was another success in 1990, but Testament was burning out touring & recording constantly. 5th album 'The Ritual' (1992) was an attempt to make an 'accessible' metal record like Metallica's 'black' album, but it sold about a half million copies once again... Testament's internal turmoil led to the exits of both Louie Clemente and Alex Skolnick by '93... James Murphy (lead guitar) and John Tempesta (drums) were brought in to record the 'Low' album in 1994, but thrash metal was becoming passé in the 90's and the album sold poorly... Testament split by 1995 after their label Atlantic dropped the band - only Chuck Billy (vocals) and Eric Peterson (guitar) were left to carry on.
Testament used new members to record the 'Demonic' album in 1997 and incorporated death metal into their sound, but the album sold poorly on a small label... Dave Lombardo (former Slayer drummer) contributed to the next album 'The Gathering' in 1999 w/ James Murphy returning on lead guitar. However, both Murphy and vocalist Chuck Billy were diagnosed w/ cancer after 2000 and Testament took a hiatus.
After Chuck Billy was cancer free, he and Eric Peterson brought Testament back on tour w/ new members in 2003... In 2005, they reunited w/ Alex Skolnick (lead guitar) and Greg Christian (bass) for a reunion tour (both Louie Clemente and John Tempesta played drums on that tour) and a new album 'The formation of damnation' finally arrived in 2008 w/ another former Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph on drums.
'Rise up' was off their 2012 studio album 'Dark roots of the Earth' which went top 20 on the US charts, w/ veteran drummer Gene Hoglan joining Testament... However, financial disagreements led to bassist Greg Christian leaving the band and Steve DiGiorgio (bass) joining for the next albums 'Brotherhood of the snake' (2016) and 'Titans of creation' (2020)... In 2022, Testament returned to tour, but Gene Hoglan announced his departure... former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo joined Testament once again.
Some recommended Testament classics - 'Over the wall'... 'Into the pit'... 'First strike is deadly'... 'Practice what you preach'... 'Return to serenity' (unedited version) ... 'Low'... 'True believer'... 'The Ballad'... 'D.N.R. (do not resuscitate)' ... 'Dark roots of the Earth'... 'Souls of black'... 'The Pale King' 🤘🤘🔥🔥
You need to see them in person, they always put on a kick ass show! I've listened to these guys' since they 1st came out in the 80's....

Testament is one of favorite thrash bands from back in the day, but I haven't kept up lately, life happened. Skolnick is one of my guitar heroes, ever since I heard Trial By Fire. That intro. MUAH. Thanks for reacting to Testament Bisscute. You're the best.
They have other vibes too. Like the much slower Return To Serenity, The Ballad, and other slow/mid tempo songs off of The Ritual album. The song the Ritual comes to mind, Electric Crown. Souls Of Black from Souls Of Black is a pretty good too. Those are my two fave albums. 😁 But there are songs like Low, Over the Wall, Into The Pit, ect from other albums that I like as well. I should dive back into them and hear what I've missed, when I get a chance.
Honestly man, you need to catch up. Chuck's voice (imo) got better with age like Araya's with Slayer. No disrespect intended to their earlier catalog because it all rips but, I have loved their last two. Brotherhood of the Snake and Titans of Creation are bangers! Check out "The Pale King" and "WWIII". Thrash lives on!!

@@pauljacobi340 I'm glad you commented because I was procrastinating hard, I'm listening to The Pale King right now and it slays! 🤘Not sure if his voice is actually better or if it's just the superior recording/audio. Whatever the case it sounds great. I'd have to hear more live stuff to be sure.
I'll definitely be listening to some more tonight and putting them on my to do list to make sure I go through the 6 albums I missed.

Well, time for you to check ''Practice What You Preach'' then. To some metalheads (myself included), Testament battles Exodus to be the 5th member of the Big Four of Thrash Metal. So yeah, you have some amazing music to discover, have fun!!

listen to early 80's/90's by TESTAMENT that was great music. RETURN TO SERENITY one of the greatest songs and solos ever written
Oh, another band you should check out is the Brazilian metal band Sepultura, but the original line up. It's got to have the Cavalera brothers, Max (singer/guitar) & Igor (drummer). Recommendations: Territory, Refuse/Resist, Arise, Dead Embryonic Cells, Propaganda, The Hunt (New Model Army cover), Roots Bloody Roots, Attitude. Everything 1998 and after is with another singer. Personally I followed Max to his other projects like SOULFLY. Prophecy and Primitive are killer albums imo. SOULFLY has a lot of tribal elements and some rap even. Worth checking out definitely.
Testament is f*cking awesome! I'll never forget my first Testament show. It was them, Exodus and Nuclear Assault. Testament was on last as they had a new album out at the time (forget which one) and after Nuclear Assault and especially Exodus (the only band that actually made me fear for my life with how insane people were going for them. Many Walls of Death that night!) I wasn't just exhausted but like shaking just spent kind of exhausted. I FORGOT Testament was coming out next. My friend reminded me and I went "This show is going to frigging kill me!" Luckily I was able to find some food and drink before Testament came out and get my second wind because I needed it. Holy Hell these guys are intense. And LOUD! Top 3 loudest band I ever heard. Like ears ringing for a week afterwards loud. So good!

Check out pretty much anything from the album The Gathering, one of the most epic albums ever made. D.N.R. is a good song to start with. Also check out their album "First Strike, Still Deadly" as it is them remaking some of their old tunes with the new sound, its fantastic.

Great reaction! I will probably be hated for this, but I find the rest of thrash metal much duller than Testament. But what i know, my favorite album is Demonic😅. I would recommend songs Together as one, D.N.R, Sins of omission, Low and The persecuted won't forget.
